Chilean miners get PSPs to pass the time

August 30, 2010

If you were trapped underground with no hope of seeing the outside world again for at least three months, what would you miss and what would you desire? A Sony PSP, obviously.

You’ve no doubt heard about the 33 Chilean miners trapped underground by now. They’re going to be stuck where they are for months, with the only way of getting anything to them a small hole bored through more than 2,000 feet of rock.

So, according to Kotaku, the team looking after the miners have sent down packages for each and every one of them. Included with the food, drink, and daily essentials are PSP consoles designed to help the miners pass the time and resist the urge to lose their minds.

I can’t help thinking this was a poor choice. I don’t mean compared to the DS, but overall. How long will the PSP batteries last before they run down? And how long before new games need to be sent down to ease the boredom of playing the same title over and over again.

I know it’s a little 20th century but what about board games?

Cool Ranch Doritos, tropical skittles, and a pack of smirnoff would do it for me ;) Those 3 months would fly by reeeeal quick :-)

Oh!….and a topless stripper from Montreal would be my final request ;) lol

Batteries was the first thing that came to my mind also. As far as games, they could have load up an SD card with a bunch of them.

Want to see the miners go crazy and turn on each other? Then send down Monopoly. They’ll resort to cannibalism within a few short days.

PSP is a great choice, it helped me through 7 months on ship and in Iraq twice (with DS). Beyond a bevy of quality older titles and psOne Classics/PSN exclusives (which can be transferred to them via memory stick), they can now be playing Valkyria Chronicles II, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable, and Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, Ys Seven, BlazBlue, and Lunar, all of which released this year; plus with God of War Ghost of Sparta coming out before the three months is up and the ability to fit more batteries, a battery extender, or an extension cord through the hole they’ll be set for some high quality portable gaming.

…and entertainment in general: Movies, music, comics, shows via memory stick, and even internet (if they can hook up some wifi for them somehow.

If you want a good laugh try the Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker demo.

I had laughing good time with the Crazy Control Tutorial on the Beach segment. The supposed to be humor on MGS4 is ‘corny’ compared to Peace Walker.

but shit Kojima didnt have to go through all that confusing control scheme if the PSP had two analog nubs. The controls will drive you insane!

What the hell is Sony’s phylosophy with just one analog nub!? Now Nintendo does the same crap with 3DS.

What about playboy? I’m sure some of them might like some playboy mags lol
