Microsoft address old D-pad issue with new Xbox 360 controller
Earlier today Microsoft announced a brand new controller for the Xbox 360. The new controller aims to address a well known problem with the D-pad.
One of the biggest complaints about the Xbox 360 controller is over its D-pad. The problem is that its just a single round piece of plastic that moves all over the place with very little accuracy.
As you can imagine this can be a nightmare when it comes to performing moves on fighting games.
Major Nelson released a short video talking about the new controller. The redesigned controller will retail for $64.99 and comes with the play & charge kit.
The D-pad can be raised up with a quick ninety degree turn of the disc holding it in place. It appears that the D-pad may be using a high pivot point like an analog stick for a smoother sweeping motion.
In addition to the D-pad redesign, the buttons will lose the bright colors in favor of gray tones.
Why did it take Microsoft nearly five years to finally address this problem? It may have something to do with the fact that both Nintendo and Sony each own patents to the best D-pad designs on the market. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft’s new D-pad stacks up now to the competition.

I love it. I hope it’s really an improvement. I wasn’t that interested before because I could not see the video but after watching that I’m intrugied. One complaint though, don’t change the colours of the buttons. Games use the colour scheme all the time in games it makes no sense to change it. Wow if this truly works that will make the 360 controller the best controller hands down. The gate of hate has opened.

The concept of the controller looks nice but they could have given it a more vortex-space look. Add motion sensing into that controller and the $64.99 price tag is justified.

I won’t be a pain in the arse this time. I am giving a fair judgment CAD. But you have to be honest: does a new color change and d-pad enhancement justify a $64.99 price tag?
I may think of buying this as the 4th controller to my 360 but the price tag may ruin the deal for me. Even if this was a Dual Shock 3 I still wouldn’t buy it, because games are worth more than controllers.
But nonetheless I commend Microsoft for finally fixing the awful d-pad on 360 wireless controllers. Bravo!

Wow I just spent $40 to unlock my phone today because I’ll be in Mexico next week bitches. What am I ever going to do now that I’ve lost $40. That could have been another year of Xbox Live or a Bluray Movie and a bag of popcorn. Oh and the $1000 spending money I’m bringing oh that could have been 3 PS3 and some games and a bag a popcorn. Oh I just can’t afford Xbox Live what am I going to do the $50 I’m spending could be used for a game. That’s great a make shift fix is available, kind of like how there’s a way to unofficially change out the HDD in the 360.

LastFM is simply Pandora which both pales in comparison to Groove Shark…
You can’t pick what songs you want to hear with Last FM and Pandora. Just the artist, and “Like” music comes up from similar artist and sometime the one you select. Groove Shark at least lets you pick the song.
This music service is more like Zune Marketplace which is like Sony Connect.

Sony didnt remove the memory card slots or BC you idiot – I still have them. They introduced a cheaper MODEL that didnt include them. Just like MS has/had many different “cheaper” model that didnt include HD cable, hard drive, wireless controller, etc etc.
but most of those things were useless. most of those memory cards are dead and USB (via cable or stick) or wireless transfer is pretty much the standar now.
did removing those useless features paid off? it certainly did as Sony has managed to reduced the price of the standard PS3 unit by $300 (originally was $600) in 3 years…..while MS has only managed to reduce the price by $100 for its standard model (originally was $400).

Oh Roca you can butter it any way you want but the reality is it’s only the 2 Games plus the Moves games will be the only exclusive this year for the PS3. To make a list into the future makes no sence because Microsft never talks about the next year they only focus on the current. So your list will always be unbalanced unti the next year comes and then you realize Microsoft has other unannounced games. You love looking at the potential and not the reality. That’s why Sony games always get pushed back.

Liquid I am simply trying to bring some balance to these posts and there are more than enough of you laying into CAD and HH. I actually have both consoles sitting either side of my TV, but I must say I do prefer the 360 simply because I prefer the 360 controller as it doesn’t feel as cramped for my hand size as the dual shock.

LBP sold as many copies as Fable 2 and the GT series has sold better than the Halo – the difference that most PS3 titles sell well over time while 360 games usually get most of its sell during its first week.

That is because the 360 titles sell on hype. After the first week the word is out that the game sucks so sales drop. The PS3 games sell well over time because we have too many to choose from but get to them eventually. I just got Uncharted 2 a few months back and loved it. So I told everyone I know with a PS3 and they went out and got the game.

What funny is that you call me blind when I’m far from it. I may talk a lot of smack about the PS3 but honestly and I mean Honestly, I only do it becaue you guys are really the blind ones. You guys are so blind that Jesus can’t heal you. I play the PS3 when I’m at friends house and I’ve even recommended it for certain people. The 360 is my console of choice and that will never change as long a Live continues to deliver the way it has. Sony’s onlie just can’t touch it no matter how free it is. If you don’t see that will too bad and enjoy what you have. The only system I really ever had a bias for was the Wii which I’ve taken back. I’m hard pressed for time and I hardly have time to play the 360 let alone the Wii so really what will the Playstation 3 do for me if I don’t have time for the first two. Those exclusive I can play at friends house and that hardly happens and everything else is on the 360 and the third party titles more time are better on the 360 along with the games that intrest me the most and they are built on the backbone of Live. But really Live just does it for me and without key features like Cross Game Chat and Parties PSN just isn’t the same experience. Would love to own a PS3 but it’s just not realistic in my life. Besides all my friends are on the 360/Wii so why should I go somewhere else? I don’t want to be lonely like the 1 friend I have who was bent on getting a PS3 alone and then complains he has no one to play with online because the rest of us have 360′s. So trust me I may have a preference but I’m not blind.

See here is the thing. Almost Every service on PNS was on the 360 first or the Wii. When PS3 dropped I was intrested to see what they would offer because before this generation the services offer on both consoles were not even heard of on consoles before. I was shocked when I turned on my 360 recovered my gamertag and I was blown away at how Xbox had evolved. So when the PS3 dropped it had nothing like what was happening on the 360 and it was super expensive. Then slowly I watched PS3 gain more services. The problem was they were copying everything and I mean everything from the 360. They took from the Wii too and I could not believe that there was nothing original coming from Sony. What a disappointment because I was so hoping that Sony would have had it’s own game plan and originality. JoJo how do you expect me to respect that. I have a hard time excepting the service knowing that. But like i said I’m all about the Online game play and Parties and Cross game chat just do it for me and PSN doesn’t offer that. Also JoJo Parties I use more then Cross game chat but having both is excellent. That my beef with Sony and lacking key onine gaming features hurt the situation too. I’ve had the same feeling when MS got into the game and initiated Sony like business game practices.
Kinect is cool and all, but lets be honest. The concept was done by Sony during the PS2 era..

Microsoft never made the Kinect Camera they only bought the tech from that company after seeing it on display a CES.
What ever Sony did with the Eye Toy did not catch their eye because the first camera wasn’t even trying to be the Eye Toy. Kinect is a more advanced Camera then the PS Eye.
And about these business practices. Why because Game developers had contracts with Sony to make games and because Microsfot came along and offers online gaming for those games and those games ended up on the Xbox after the contracts expired. Come on Phranctoast that’s lame. Didn’t Sony do the same thing to Nintendo. Your not being fair.

You are right about 1 thing CAD…Sony did drop the ball when the PS3 launched and it’s online offering, but cut the crap and spare me the whole innovation thing.
It’s been done on the PC long before the 360 got it. Look at Steam for fucks sake.
If anything it’s more evolutionary than innovative.
And this crusade you’re on about how revolutionary Kinect is…dude it was done on the PS2 long before MS decided to use it, and I’m sure it was done on another platform before the PS2. And by your own admission MS bought the technology, they didn’t invent it!
They may develop the software for it, but they sure as shit didn’t invent the technology.

Okay cool, you feel cross-game chat/parties is worth it…and in all honesty, those are neat features i would like carried over…BUT i just don’t think its worth $60 bucks….we’ll agree to disagree…
See, i have never said LIVE/Gold sucks…what i have always said is, it’s not worth the price…see the difference? i hope you can because HH the dumbshit can’t..
Now..as for innovation/creativity, im sorry but im gonna have to go and say you are dead wrong…now before you get all in a hissy fit finish reading.
I give MS credit for introducing a lot of features, features that have been around PC for ages, and bringing them into a nice interface on CONSOLES…kudos..BUT, Sony and Sega were already trying that with the Dreamcast and PS3…MS just did it better…
But, now, Sony has caught up, learned from it’s mistakes, offering pretty much everything that LIVE offers, and offering most of what Gold offers…for free….on top of that, their premium service, in terms of what content is pretty much GIVEN away…it really does spank Gold/LIVE….
Overall though man, both services are great and i will leave it at this: LIVE GOld would be much better for me and the other 70% of the 360 userbase if its features were offered free…
Now in terms of innovation and creativity..MS blows and Sony rules…
Just look at how MS keeps losing and closing their own first party studios….
Sony BREEDS and WELCOMES innovative developers, sometimes at the cost to their pocket and for their loss..case in point: Ninja Theory was around before, but Sony gave them the chance to make a hit…they did, Heavenly Sword…but Ninja Theory left…
Put it this way, what innovative AAA full retail innovative games has MICROSOFT and it’s first party studios brought? Gears is EPic’s baby and they are not a MS first party studio…really the ‘big’ hitters from MS are:
Halo ( yet another FPS )
Forza…( always looked at as a “GT-clone” or ALWAYS compared to GT )
and these games, while excellent games and really great selling games, unfortunately are NOT at the top of their genres..cue in the paranthesis
Serious man, if i’m wrong list AAA FULL RETAIL aka not arcade or 3rd party games???
Nintendo has their innovations:
Zelda
Mario
Metroid
Pikmin
Kirby
Mario Kart
Pokemon
ALL those titles are at the top of their respective genres…and Ninty brings innovation to their latest iterations every time..

Sly Cooper
Killzone 2 (yet another FPS )
MAG (and another )
Heavy Rain ( top of its genre )
God of War ( top of its genre )
Uncharted ( top of its genre )
Gran Turismo ( top of its genre )
Sony breeds innovation…their business strategy now makes sense….their goal was never to ‘gain’ 3rd party exclusives…it was just to ‘keep’ it..all the while expanding their first party titles, which can ONLY be found on a Sony console…just like Nintendo can get by a whole generation without 3rd party support ( gamecube, wii to an extent ) Sony was the opposite: they have all the 3rd party support..but why rely on middle men when you can put money in your studios and thus your own pocket, all the while utilizing the absolute most from your own console…
See, next gen, Sony is really setup..they don’t really have to ‘fight’ for 3rd party support…they good there….and now they have even more proven 1st party titles…they just have to pump em out..
This gen MS had no choice but to gain as much 3rd party support as possible..but it has proved pretty expensive for them as evident by their severe lackof 1st party libraries, and the loss of more than a couple of 1st party studios…including Bungie…
What cna they possibly offer next gen? 3rd party titles that will be on both Sony and Nintendo systems?
Anywhoo im ranting..bottom line…MS did a good job on LIVE/Gold, its just not worth the money in comparison to what Sony offers for free…and Sony innovates and has much more creativity than MS were my main points..

“or they would make sure there was better games on the 360″ as far as I can tell there is no shortage of good games on the 360 and 40million other people seem to think the same. just because they don’t appear to have as many AAA exclusives doesn’t mean that they don’t have any games. Exclusive titles aren’t actually as widely purchased (bar some very few exceptions) as multiplat games. For each Halo or GT5 there are dozens of outstanding AAA multiplatform game. This appears to be the policy that MS have decided to follow and have done so very successfully.

i know. it is that sort of attitude that endears me to the xbox and its users. it may have its (many) faults and the odd rabid fanboi but by and large the “xbots” are a much more civilised bunch who seem a lot less concerned with trashing and badmouthing the competition. lets face it: the fact that the pbots need to constantly “prove” the superiority of their console by highlighting any flaws (real or imagined) shows their obvious subconscious concern that their idol is still in last place and actually nowhere near as superior (when it comes to gaming both consoles are pretty evenly matched with the edge to the ps3) as they had been made to believe through the rhetoric of Sony. how else could you explain the number of posts on xbox articles vs ps3 articles?

I agree for some part of that statement. I really enjoy AAA third party games also, and the majority of games I’ll be getting this holiday are just that, but first party exclusives define a console and differentiate it from the pack.
If MS only wants to stick to third party multiplatform games, then go right ahead. I know where I’ll be gaming.

there is no doubt that the PS3 has the strongest exclusives lineup of the HD consoles but unlike the general view here the 360 has a very strong lineup that is not far off the ps3 and whilst possibly not as critically acclaimed it is certainly equal to or possibly even more of a commercial success. remember MS still has Fable, gears of war, forza, crackdown, banjo and Kazooie, alan wake and Ninety Nine Nights to name a few. That is a pretty powerful list in anyones book.

Fable I can play on PC, and Crackdown and N3-2 got horrible reviews.
Compare that list to this:
Socom 4, LittleBigPlanet 2, Killzone 3, Gran Turismo 5, Resistance 3, Ratchet & Clank, Infamous, Horizon, Motorstorm, Agent, DC Online Universe, Final Fantasy versus 13, Final Fantassy 14, Last Guardian and Uncharted.

Roca, why do persist in reeling off games and franchises that are often still years away from release when the PS3 has plenty of great exclusives that have already been released or are imminent? agent, horizon, last guardian and most others aren’t out for a while , dc online is also on the pc and so is ff14 and you can bet that agent won’t stay ps3 exclusive for long. crackdown got some pretty good reviews and was well received.
all this doesn’t change the fact that try as you might there is no denying that the 360 still has an excellent exclusive lineup that comes pretty close to what the PS3 offers in quantity and quality and possibly exceeds it in profitability.

I guess just take any of the games that aren’t out and eliminate them and roll back those sequels by one and his point still stands.
I think Fable is the only game that the PS3 doesn’t have an answer for as an exclusive(W-RPG). I’m not sure Demons Souls or 3D dot heroes are comparable even in genre.
All others the PS3 has covered.
