Vanquish could be the next big new IP
It seems like lately all we have been getting are game sequels. Granted, most of the sequels have been excellent and many have been triple-A titles. However, its always refreshing to see a new IP with some originality in it.
Vanquish is starting to look like it could be the next big new IP. The gameplay is fresh and takes a different approach to the whole third person shooter genre.
It’s difficult to explain the gameplay as it’s frenetic and fast paced that mixes action, cover and shooting mechanics into a one fluid motion. Vanquish is brought to you by Platinum Games, the same studio that created Mad World and Bayonetta.
It appears that Platinum Games wants to prove that the studio can develop on the PS3. The studio has been primarily showing a PS3 build of the game and it looks absolutely fantastic.
Platinum Games may have beefed up its PS3 knowledge after the whole Bayonetta affair. Gamespot recently released a series of gameplay videos on the PS3, showing off different aspects of the game.

Shinji Mikami Master of 3rd person shooters!
Japan loves 3rd person shooters and they just keep getting better!
If you analyze the original Biohazard/Resident Evil is basically a ’3rd person shooter’ just like Contra, Galaga, Gradius, Desert Strike, Starfox, Die Hard Arcade, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid for that matter.
RE just had a different control mechanic since it was designed before the arrival of the dual analog stick on the PS One controller. Shinji Mikami may have stuck with that control scheme becuse it works and was accepted by many.
Then controls evolved into more action oriented running while gunning Dino Crisis 2 although still using the digital direction buttons.
Then came RE4 using the analog stick to navigate and QTE gameplay and incorporating some 1st person shooter stuff on it but went back to stop ‘n shoot mechanics.
Now with Vanquish, it looks like its the culmination of every trick in the 3rd person shooter book.
Very much interested. Looks like 3rd person shooters will potentially evolve more and more compared to first person shooters.

I’m really looking forward to this game. This looks like it will be a sleeper hit amongst all the typical FPS’s coming out this Holiday season.

The shooting mechanics look very similar to Lost Planet 2.
I liked Lost Planet 2, but this might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

I wish they would make a few more games using the Uncharted 2 engine.

I like whatever engine Tomb Raider Underworld was done on (Crystal Engine I think). That game looked great for a Third party engine. I hear Deus Ex 3 will be on the same engine.
Batman runs on Unreal Engine…believe it or not.. and

I just started MGS4. I’m having trouble getting the controls right. They should have let the play ease into it like Uncharted 2. That is my problem with lots of games. It takes me a while to get the controls down.

“Batman runs on Unreal Engine”
didn’t know that, but Unreal Engine runs at its best with a dark environment tone.

That and bulky characters.

ncaissie,
I guess you haven’t played MGS 1-3 then? MGS4 is by far the easiest to controls and difficulty wise.
I can see how switching weapons and gear might take a little to get use to, but it’s not that bad once you get the hang of it.

PS3 vs 360 version comparison.
Looks like PS3 has this one in the bag so far. I think a more thorough Digital Foundry comparison will be the determined factor.
According to that forum though the controls feel tighter and more responsive on the PS3 version.

Reminds me of a TPS version of Plain Sight minus the auto aim, sounds good, downloading the demo now.

Just for all you Alan Wake haters, it’s unconfirmed, but the demo’s supposed to be sub-HD.

I still need to play this demo. I have too many games backed up and not enough time. Tonight I’ll likely play something. It’s a 1PM Yankees games so that won’t interrupt.
