Criterion will return to Burnout franchise

September 1, 2010

Fans of the Burnout series need not worry that we’ve seen the last of it, with Criterion strongly indicating there will be another game coming soon.

Burnout Paradise, the most recent Burnout game, was released at the beginning of 2008, so we’re due for a sequel. However, Criterion has been busy working on Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, due out in November. Which has led some to wonder what, if any, the future holds for the Burnout franchise.

According to Gaming Union, Matt Webster, a Senior Producer at Criterion, was recently asked to clarify the developer’s position. He said:

You know what? I love this question. When we’re doing Burnout people are always like ‘so guys, when are you going to do Need for Speed?’. And now we’re doing Need for Speed, people are like ‘so what’s going on with Burnout?’.

To answer your question, no, Burnout’s here. Burnout Paradise was so successful for us. It’s written into the DNA of Criterion, we just happen to be doing a Need for Speed game.

Which implies there is a new game on the way without actually confirming it.

I love Burnout Paradise. It, along with Race Driver: Grid, has helped tide me over while I’ve been waiting for Gran Turismo 5 to finally make an appearance. So I’d welcome a new game in the series. Just give me a few months with the aforementioned GT5 first.

Fucking cheap skate…Typical of a loser to steal ideas from competition. Oh well…waiting for the release of GT 5 could mean the downfall of Criterion. I personally didn’t care for Burnout Paradise. It lacked structure and creativity. It felt like another retard-inspired game for open world environments…

“Just drive around and do nothing kids!” There’s no logic point to Burnout Paradise but enjoy driving around aimlessly!”

That’s what it felt like. And it doesn’t surprise me that Burnout Paradise sold so well…Society has really dumb down within the past 20 years. So many young kids, teenagers, and young adults are rebellious, annoying, short-tempered, lacking focus, and patience!

I would bet a nickel that 95% percent of the customers who enjoy Burnout Paradise have problems.

I’m more of a fan of the arcade racers than the simulation ones. No offense to GT or to a lesser degree Forza fans, but that’s just my preference. I think both can coexist in harmony. Hot Pursuit looks good, but since racing games are right above fighting games in my personal genres of interest, they will likely all be left behind.

I played the demo of Paradise and I have to agree with TFOS. I was not a fan of the open world idea of Burnout. The more structured races in the past iterations were better IMO. Hopefully the next one goes back to that. One thing I have to hand it to Criterion for is supporting their game. Not many games get the DLC (some free) support that Burnout Paradise received.

    Bravo Criterion!!!

I liked Burnout Paradise for what it was – I’ll say I prefer more arcade racers than sim racers but that’s just because not all sims racing games are done right. In fact the only sim racing game I’ll take over any other type of racing game is the Gran Turismo series.

Burnout Paradise was ok to a point, mostly when your playing online with a group of friends.

Then EA fucks everything up and releases an update that is MANDATORY for you to DL otherwise you can’t play online with your friends anymore. Also the update is HUGE.

Other problem with the update is it totally fucks up everything about any and every car you got comfortable with. That is enough to ruin the game for alot of people.

Forza… Not a bad series. Fairly enjoyable but just doesn’t keep my attention for very long.

Gran Tourismo… Well the only GT game that really drew me in for an extended period of time was GT1. It was without a doubt the best IMHO. 2,3, and 4 just didn’t have the exact formula that made 1 so great for me. I had totally beaten 1 100%, which is a serious commitment in video games.

I think my second fav racing game of all time behind GT1 was Ridge Racer 4. RR took a serious sim atitude to try and compete with GT1 and I felt that was rather enjoyable.

The main reason why GT5 interests me is its Nascar mode. I probably wont buy it though

I feel the same way. Loved GT1 I got pretty far in that game considering I did not even own a Playstation. After that the feeling was not the same.

My favorite Raceing game was probably NFS Underground 2. I fully maxed that game out. Arcade racers own sims anyday. They are just far more fun to play. If I wanted to get technical about racing I rather do it for real. Game are for fun. As for Burnout I love every series and the franchise is awesome. I’ll buy any Burnout game.

Sorry but I gotta give a shout out to Kyle Petty racing back on Nintendo 64 I think. I love that game as well.

Wow that seriously is. I forget which class started giving me trouble, but I had to give up at a point.
