Dead Rising 2: Case Zero Impression

September 1, 2010

Dead Rising 2: Case Zero Impression Dead Rising 2: Case Zero was developed exclusively for the Xbox 360 to bridge the gap between the first and second game that will be releasing near the end of next month. For PS3 owners, this will be the first time the franchise will make its way out onto the console.

Case Zero, a prequel to DR2, introduces you to Chuck and the new gameplay mechanics. Similarly to the first title, Case Zero maintains the wacky violent charm that made the first game so fun. However, the DLC did feel a bit limiting due to its very short duration.

There is also a time limit placed on the game, making it feel a bit like a demo then a full DLC game. If you like exploration then this game may not be for you due to the time limit. Most likely you will have to play through the game multiple times to be able to do some exploration.

Also, those hoping for more of a back story after the first game will be disappointed as there is barely any mention of the previous events.

Despite a demo like feel to the game with barely any story, the game will offer hours of fun and is well worth the low $5 price tag.

  2. phranctoast:

This game is so far off my radar with all the great games coming out so soon. It will be a bargain bin game for me at the very most.

  3. ncaissie:

LOL did you get a 360 phranc?

  4. phranctoast:

I mean Dead Rising 2, not Case Zero.

Lol. Now I can wake up everyday with a smile :) Hey whatever happened to Ivan PSP, Con, Arvis, OH, Sk8mann, Fag Boys Make Me Sick, Matt, Spideydog, & Bourne?…..The guys who caused me to get banned like a million times on Gamerblorge lol.

  6. Barnabe Jones:

Charging $5 for a demo and then making it exclusive to one console is a really stupid move.

I’m not interested in this game at all, but maybe if I had a chance to play a demo (free) it would change my mind. Oh well, there are plenty of other amazing games coming out.

  7. Barnabe Jones:

    Well…

    - Ivan PSP had a sex change and became Japanese
    - Con suicide bombed himself
    - Arvis I see on PSX extreme
    - Matt left after you offended him (really) ;)
    - Spideydog shows up from time to time
    - Bourne MIA

  8. Roca.:

Dead Rising 2 will be crap

  9. Roca.:

Front Mission Evolve will be worse.

  10. phranctoast:

I have such little faith in Capcom that I would want Platinum Games (Bayonetta/Vanquish) to handle a new Strider game, if that ever came to light….

Well Other M finally came. Those bastards at Amazon delayed my shipment by a day. To add insult to injury today is the start of the new semester.

So now I have shit loads of work, and no free time. While yesterday, I could have sat in front of the TV for 12 hours straight. Bastards!

Well, maybe I’ll just take a little brake…. *leaves computer*

  14. SW:

I’m not a HUGE fan of Other M tbh.

I get what they’re doing ‘Look its Super Metroid! in a 3d space!!!’

But moving in ’3d’ with the dpad is a pain on my thumb, and hitting A to morph is not natural. I dislike not getting health and missing from enemies also.

Oh, and the whole ‘hey you have all your weapons but you’re not allowed to use ‘em!’ sucks. I don’t like the Samus voice and the actor sucks. Finally, I prefer FEWER cast members in my metroid games. MP1/2 are perfect examples of finding objects that tell a story (by scanning) in a lonely ass landscape.

Still, at least they didn’t dump all over Retro and strip out everything MP brought to the table. Still I can’t help but feel its a simplified metroid for ‘thier’ new audience.

    I miss metroid prime.

    Endofrant.

  15. SW:

    *missles from enemies.

So is this another ‘exclusive’ lost? lol

  17. Liquid:

is it true CAD has a micropenis??????????

  18. oldschool1987:

@ Liquid: I have it on good authority that this is true. HH told me himself and said he and CAD had spent the most magical night together in their ‘command center’

  19. Barnabe Jones:

    SW,

I’ve only put in a few hours so far (just got the dispersed charge shot). I have mixed feelings so far. When the combat and platforming come together, it’s great. The dpad isn’t ideal, but it works.

The combat is a mixed bag. Sometimes it’s really easy run and gun. And then all of the sudden it’s NInja Gaiden. Also I hate getting hit by things off camera.

The whole waiting until your a hit away from dying and trying to enter meditation mode to recoup health, is annoying. It’s close to impossible to pull off during a heated battle. Health drops would have been so much simpler.

The setup does feel a lot like Prime 3. But eventually you break away from the marines and do your own thing. The atmosphere has been pretty good so far. I agree though, the less characters the better.

I don’t mind having the items marked on the map. It’s like Zero Mission. It makes some of the pickups really easy, but others still aren’t that obvious to get. I’ve already seen a ton of pickups I have to come back for.

At times it feels like Super Metroid 3d, and other times it feels like Ninja Gaidentroid. It does feel, look, and sound great.

I need to give it some more time, but I have to agree that it’s no Prime. Actually I would love to see Retro do a sequel to Other M.

“just got the dispersed charge shot”

    Hello…… Spoiler!!!!

  21. Barnabe Jones:

lol it’s actually not called that. But it’s similar. ;)

Good game so far. I’m only 3 or 4 hours in, but I’d give it an 80 at this point.

  22. Barnabe Jones:

OK… I see now. I thought it was just because I was in sector 1, but the game is pretty linear. There doesn’t seem to be any puzzle solving to find your way around. Example: finding and using Ice Beam to open white doors…

It seems like there’s puzzles to find your way our of the room, but after that it’s pretty much a straight line.

Kind of like the Resident Evil 4 of Metroid, but not quite.

  23. Roca.:

I called it when I said Team Ninja was going to ruin the Metriod formula.

  24. CarlB:

There were a lot of people who said they ruined it when it switched to 1st person shooter style also. Now they go back to their roots and add some depth to the story and all of a sudden it’s “ruined”? It’s still getting generally favorable reviews, and though it may have split the fan base, at least we are getting a good game in the Metroid lineup.

  25. Barnabe Jones:

Don’t get me wrong. It’s a great game. It’s just that the style is a little different.

It’s not such a bad thing. There are puzzles, the platforming is great, the atmosphere and areas are fantastic. Your movement through the areas is just a lot more focused (like Fusion).

There is some backtracking through areas to progress, but the game doesn’t rely as heavily on it as it has in the past. It’s not really a huge issue.

  26. Barnabe Jones:

I should probably also add, that it’s not an incredibility easy game. There are some normal enemies that can and will kill you, and there are some head scratching puzzle moments.

  27. SW:

“Now they go back to their roots ”

Thats the thing. I don’t think they really did.
And I’m all for story, but the atmosphere of solitude in MP1/2 was fucking awesome.

Oh well, I still love the Big N.

  28. CarlB:

I meant more back to 2D, even though it is pseudo 2D. Those who were expecting the next installment of 3D 1st person shooter Prime and more of the same will no doubt be disappointed… but yeah, Ninty and crew like to change it up every once in a great while.
