Apple claims iPod Touch outsells DS, PSP
The iPod Touch is now the bestselling handheld games console on the market. According to Apple. No one else. Just Apple.
Apple is undoubtedly a major player in the handheld gaming sector these days, with the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch enabling even the most casual of gamers to play games on the go.
However, Apple is also very good a talking itself up, and using statistics and sales figures in more imaginative ways than anyone else. Which explains why Steve Jobs decided to declare that the iPod Touch now outsells the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP combined, enjoying a 50 percent market share of the handheld gaming sector.
Unfortunately for Apple, the figures don’t stack up. In terms of overall sales, the DS alone has outsold all iOS devices, of which the iPod Touch is just one. Technologizer suggests Jobs was referring to last quarter sales, but even then sales of the iPod Touch were only about level with the DS and PSP combined.
The iPod Touch is a great product, but it’s first and foremost a PMP rather than a games console. And I don’t see why Apple is fighting against that fact.

Oh joy, more ignorant blather. The standard definition of market share is current sales, not lifetime and certainly not the three months ago quarter. Also, did you fail elementary school mathematics? Last I heard, if you are even with your combined competition, you have exactly 50% market share.
Have DS or (anemic) PSP sales accelerated since Mar-June (which is the period where iPod touch had roughly 50% share)? I’ll bet the iPod’s been holding strong especially with the yearly back-to-school promotion this quarter. Why does every blogger assume they have more accurate data than the guy running the freakin’ company?

I have actually ditched my ds and use my iPhone almost exclusively. Not necessarily because it’s better, its just much more convenient for me.

I just recently asked carl to help me with syncin apps because I didn’t realize how cool the iPod Touch actually is. Had it since day of realease as well and have rarely used it.
