Moore: Next-gen consoles years away

September 14, 2010

Don’t hold your breath for a PS4, Xbox 720, or Wii 2. Because they aren’t going to turn up anytime soon. According to Peter Moore.

Peter Moore is a man who know the games industry inside out. Currently the President of EA, he’s also worked at Sega and Microsoft. So when he warns that there won’t be any new consoles for a few years we should take note. And enjoy what we’ve already got.

Speaking to Eurogamer recently, Moore stated his beliefs:

If you look at the history of the pricing, we’re in mid-cycle. Over the years, $199 and below has been where 75 to 80 per cent of business is done. With the exception of 360 and the Wii, PlayStation 3, which seems to have a lot of momentum, is not even close to that. So we’re still to reach a price point across all three consoles where historically 75 to 80 per cent of business is done. Yeah, I think we’re in mid-cycle.

When you’ve got things like Move and Kinect, these are tantamount to new platform launches for both Sony and Microsoft respectively. I don’t think they are going to be investing in new hardware 12 months, 24 months, 36 months after investing I’m sure a considerable amount of money in getting both of these platforms out.

This would imply that Nintendo will be the first to make a move. Not only are Wii sales dropping off, the price of the console has always been in the mainstream ballpark, and there isn’t a Move- or Kinect-style gamechanger on the horizon. The PS3 and Xbox 360, however, are here to stay.

good. i dont want another next gen console for at least 5 years.

  2. phranctoast:

I agree…maybe not five years, but I can wait. Some of the games these guys have been pumping out are jaw dropping…

  3. jojo29:

The longer this gen goes, the better for Sony ;)

  4. phranctoast:

Maybe jojo. The 360 stands to be priced in the sweet zone ($150) much quicker. The 4gb arcade will likely be that price by sometime next year.

Unless Move and Kinect are the testbed and to be bundled into next gen anyway?

  6. CarlB:

We’ll probably see the next Wii by the end of next year, the next 360 by 2012, and the next PS3 by 2013.

  7. ncaissie:

    Fuckin PRICKS.
I’m sending Sony a nasty email because I knew adding the move Bull Shit this late in the game would delay the PS4.
I didn’t spend over $1000 to get wii level Bulshit.

I will post my letter to Sony here and their responce.

  8. ncaissie:

    You guys are Loco

  9. Rimmer:

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Wii2 introduced at E3 2011 with a launch around Nov 2011. I doubt we will see the other two until E3 2012.

  10. Roca.:

4 more years sounds about right [with next gen console announcements a year before]

  11. ncaissie:

    @Roca

I hope not. AAA games are to far between for me.

  12. Roca.:

what do you mean? I can barely keep up with all the AAA games from Sony.

Why would you want a new console when I feel the PS3 still has alot more to offer.

  13. ncaissie:

Regardless of what the resident (retarded, jealous) xbots say I look forward to games with better and better graphics and game play. All this PSN, XBLA, Kinetic and Move shitware is holding back the development of the good games. Move sports is no different then Wii sports resort with motion plus.
I played it for 10 minutes. What a fuckin waste of money. The sorcery game is retarded just like Harry Potter on the Wii. As great as the PS3 is I want all games to be Uncharted 2, GOW 3 and Killzone 2 level.
I was watching Qore last night and the Fallout Vegas looked more like last GEN. I’m hoping it was just the videos but the people that shot the camera at the end of the video looked awful.

  14. ncaissie:

I hate paying $50-$60 for third rate games.

  15. Roca.:

LOL Fallout New Vegas does look shitty.
I read they are reusing the same engine.

  16. FahKinSuPah:

“LOL Fallout New Vegas does look shitty.
I read they are reusing the same engine.”

If they were using the same engine as Fallout 3 thats not really a bad thing. I just hope they got some of the issues with it patched up.

I haven’t seen any videos of it either though, So i couldn’t comment about how it looks.

FNV is on my list of games I want though, but its just gonna be a LOOONG time before I get it lmao

  17. FahKinSuPah:

Aside from that I still have 12 achievements to go in Mass Effect 1…

But yesterday I finished up some of the DLC in ME2.

Overlord was ok, and Shadow Broker was awsome. I managed to get all the achievements in both DLCs. Shadow Broker was really challenging though. One of the achs for the game is to beat it on Insanity, and Shadow Broker also has one for Insanity as well. Wow was that hard lmao. I am pretty sure that if i can beat SB on Insanity then I can finish the rest of the game on it without a problem.

So now I am maybe halfway through ME2 and I have just 1 mor achiement to go to 100% it…. At least until/IF they release another DLC.

  18. phranctoast:

Console makers are likely talking to software makers.

It costs a lot of money to create games now. A lot more than in the past. Sony for one is just making it out of the Red and MS does not have it’s console hitting the sweet spot yet.

Software developers will likely put pressure on console makers to give it some more time. They’re finally all making profits, so why ruin that by releasing another console too soon and spoiling all that.

I hardly expect Move or Kinect to act as “new console releases”, Just cater to a different market or different and the same in Move’s case…

The way games have been turning out lately, I’m comfortable waiting 4 years until another console drops.

  19. phranctoast:

“I hate paying $50-$60 for third rate games.”

LOL… Don’t buy third rate games then. There’s enough awesome games around for you to spend your hard earned cash on.

  20. Barnabe Jones:

Did you guys see the DMC reboot?

I’m underwhelmed. At least the soundtrack sounds like it’s going to be better. No more industrial butt rock please.

    http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/15/devil-may-cry-reboot-in-trailer-and-screenshot-form/

  21. Barnabe Jones:

Oh and Valkyria Chronicles 3 for PSP… boo!

    And Ninja Gaiden 3 announced.

  22. Roca.:

“Valkyria Chronicles 3 for PSP… boo!”

    stupid Sega!!

  23. phranctoast:

“Did you guys see the DMC reboot?”

Yeah we mentioned it in the TGS topic.

Screenshots don’t look half bad though from a graphics point of view.

  24. twilight:

I loved the sound track to Devil May Cry 4. This is one of the few games that I actually liked the sound track.

  25. ncaissie:

“Sony for one is just making it out of the Red and MS does not have it’s console hitting the sweet spot yet.”

I don’t believe that. Sony has been making money on software and the PS2 to keep them in the black. They did lose on HW but I don’t think they lost over all.

  26. PS3 RULEZ890:

I predict that nintendo will lanuch a brand new handheld system and it will sells millions and that it’s called the 3DS.

as for home consoles Big N in 2014, MS in 2016 and SONY in 2017.

  27. ncaissie:

“Software developers will likely put pressure on console makers to give it some more time. They’re finally all making profits, so why ruin that by releasing another console too soon and spoiling all that.”
They had a learning curve for the PS3 for sure. Only because of the CELL processor. Do you think Sony will redesign the processor twice in a row?
Now that they have the hang of it the games should come faster and better looking.

  28. ncaissie:

AS a developer I know. My first Java application took quite a while. Now I can pound them out in no time. Why do you thing the 360 gets so much shovelware? Because it is basically a PC and They have been making PC games for a long time.

  29. ncaissie:

“There’s enough awesome games around for you to spend your hard earned cash on.”
    Not really.
I have a ton of third rate games to play and no AAA games. I have AAA games but played them all. (except MGS4)

  30. ncaissie:

They way I see it. When the PS4 comes then Great games like GOW 3 and Uncharted 2 will be the norm and we will have many to play.

  31. ncaissie:

Those fuckin Move games look stupid.

  32. Roca.:

“I have a ton of third rate games to play and no AAA games”

you still have yet to finish or buy these games:
Uncharted 1, Infamous, Heavenly Sword, Batman:AA, Resistance: FoM, KZ2, Dead Space, etc

  33. phranctoast:

The best looking console games are traditionally released towards the end of the generation when developers/programmers know the ins/outs of the system.

Why hit the reset button on that. Some early 360/PS3 games barely looked better than some late Xbox/PS2 games.

  34. ncaissie:

“you still have yet to finish or buy these games:
Uncharted 1, Infamous, Heavenly Sword, Batman:AA, Resistance: FoM, KZ2, Dead Space, etc”

I’ll give you Uncharted 1, HS and Batman: AA.

Infamous controls are to crappy. I finished Resistance(Co-Op). KZ2 makes me nauseous but I’m going to give it another try.

I’m not sure any of these are AAA titles though.

  35. phranctoast:

Infamous gets some getting used to. 85%-90% on MC should register as a AAA titles on a platform.

other than Heavenly Sword, the rest of those titles stack up in that respect.

Make sure you BUY Dead Space. That game kicks sooo much ass. And it’s dirt cheap.

  36. ncaissie:

“The best looking console games are traditionally released towards the end of the generation when developers/programmers know the ins/outs of the system.

Why hit the reset button on that. Some early 360/PS3 games barely looked better than some late Xbox/PS2 games.”

The first PS3 games looked better than the best PS2 titles. There will be no resetting anything.

  37. ncaissie:

“85%-90% on MC should register as a AAA titles on a platform.”
LMAO Not a chance. There is no way in hell that LBP is AAA. Or any Wii game for that matter.

  38. phranctoast:

That’s debatable. It usually takes about until the Second Gen games for the Games to truly differentiate themselves.

Look at Black on Xbox/PS2. It could hold it’s own graphically to some early FPS’s.

Developers finally stream lined games this gen. Better and better games are coming out quicker and quicker. If a new console comes out, you will have a learning curve for the new hardware and great AAA games will come out less frequently. Hence…reset.

  39. phranctoast:

LBP is by far a AAA game. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s not a AAA game. It has over 3 million community levels made. Someone is creating levels.

  40. phranctoast:

There’s also plenty of AAA Wii games. Most of them are by Nintendo themselves…but that’s besides the point.

  41. ncaissie:

“Developers finally stream lined games this gen. Better and better games are coming out quicker and quicker. If a new console comes out, you will have a learning curve for the new hardware and great AAA games will come out less frequently. Hence…reset.”
That didn’t happen for the 360. It is basically and Xbox 1 with more power and unstable. Lol
PS3 was a complete reset though. The PS2 was an update to the PSX.

  42. ncaissie:

“There’s also plenty of AAA Wii games. Most of them are by Nintendo themselves…but that’s besides the point.”
Wrong. lol maybe without the motion shit. New Mario would have been great but the fact you have to shake the wiimote like your setting off dynamite ruined it completely.

  43. ncaissie:

LOL LBP is for 9-10 year old kids.

  44. ncaissie:

“It has over 3 million community levels made. Someone is creating levels.”
LOL yes my 9 year old has made many. and so has a lot the kids in her class.

    @FKSP

Choose engineer class with geth shield as bonus power or a sentinel class with warp ammo/reave as your bonus power for insanity.. I didt it with a level 30 soldier on my second play through, needless to say Harbinger DID hurt me a lot :)

  49. FahKinSuPah:

    @Toshi

Well when I started up my second playthrough in ME I chose Infiltrator and I am currently continuing that playthrough in ME2, which is the one on Insanity mode.

I did choose the Geth Shield as my bonus power too lol. It comes in handy.

Another ability that has really helped me out so far is Tactical Cloak. I don’t think I could have taken out the Shadow Broker without it.

I’ve already passed Horizon, and the other day I did the Shadow Broker DLC, but I didn’t get to play yesterday so I haven’t gotten any farther yet.

  50. ToshithegreaT:

    @FKSP

Actually sentinel gets a personalised tactical armor which is just like geth shield but better, so u can one more bonus power, while engineers come with tactical drones and they are really helpful on the collector ship mission, anyways i m sure, u ll be having fun with harbinger soon enough ;)

  51. FahKinSuPah:

    @Toshi

I’m actually enjoying the Infiltrator. I’ve had plenty of fun with Harbinger and the Pratorian when your inside the “Disabled” collectors ship.

    I found out something nice…

I found out that when you do Tali’s recruitment mission on Hardcore or insane you can get a Geth assault rifle. Pretty much the best, aside from the soldier only battle rifle.

So anyway, when I was in the collectors ship I took the Assault Rifle training.

After that I went right o recruiting Tali so I can get that Geth assault rifle :-)

Wait wait. Peter Moore commenting about something alusive to Moore´s Law!? Oh God! My geeky self is so giggly right now!
