Microsoft wants to ‘step up’ its PC games

Microsoft wants to ‘step up’ its PC gamesOne of the things Microsoft has been criticized for in the PC gaming arena is its lack of support. The company seems to deliver conflicting messages about gaming on the PC.

When Microsoft announced that Fable II would not be coming to the PC, many fans of the franchise cried foul. The company has been slowly cutting ties with the PC platform, as other titles such as Halo 3 and even Halo Wars were developed for the Xbox 360 only.

Fans of the Age of Empire series were disappointed that the last Ensemble RTS game (Halo Wars) did not make it to the PC before the studio’s closure.

However, it seems like Microsoft wants to turn all of that around by shifting more resources behind the PC. According to CVG, Dave Luehmann, GM at Microsoft Games Studios, recently revealed that the company has been allocating “real investment” for the PC.

There’s been a fair bit of criticism aimed at Microsoft that we were spending a lot of our focus on console, and we need to be putting resources behind PC as well.

Other companies should look to Microsoft for leadership, but I’m not sure they do. It is our job to lead the way on PC. And in some ways we are doing that and in other ways we are not. So we need to step up.

We are putting some real investment and big IPs behind the Windows platform. We’ve spoken of the first three, Fable III, Age of Empires Online and Microsoft Flight. However we are not going to stop there.

As it is, even Microsoft’s biggest gaming competitor Sony has a much larger presence on the PC. Sony has an entire division (Sony Online Entertainment) dedicated to that platform.

However, it is curious to see such a comment from Microsoft after Kudo Tsunoda, head of Kinect, stated that PC gaming was dead.
