PS3 firmware 3.50: 3D movie support and shuts out exploding controllers
The latest PS3 firmware 3.50 brings gamers a slew of new updates to the console. The biggest update is around the PS3’s ability to playback 3D Blu-ray movies.
While other movie aficionados may have to shell out more money to buy a 3D Blu-ray player, PS3 owners will get it for free courtesy of Sony. However, as outlined by Sony’s update report, you will not be able to output Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD. If you have no clue what this is then this change probably won’t impact you.
When watching movies in 2D, DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD will be available for use as it is only disabled for 3D playback. Currently the PS3 is the only console that can output DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD due to its HDMI 1.3 port.
The update also disables counterfeit or unlicensed controllers from working with the PS3. Licensed third party controllers from Mad Catz or Nyko will continue to work fine. Sony has issued a warning that the company has received reports of counterfeit controllers that have exploded.
It sounds like it’s probably due to shoddy powering causing the batteries to explode.

“The PlayStation manufacturer goes on to say that because Sony is not obligated to ensure support for such devices, so they could stop working or be rendered useless with a firmware update. Counterfeit controllers aren’t a new concept, which makes us wonder why Sony suddenly decided to warn customers about the dangers of opting for cheap, no-name controllers instead of the official, Sony-branded controllers. The company didn’t name any specific controllers in its warning.”

Banning feedback controllers!? Disgusting!
I for one enjoy the realism of my hands exploding when I overcook a grenade.
Sad day Sony, a sad day indeed.

Sony says if you don’t buy our controllers, they’ll EXPLODE!

I have no problem with Sony banning no authorized controllers.

*non*

Hmm… they didn’t name any controllers, or even mention “licensed controllers” in their statement.

But we all know they’re talking about unauthorized controllers that is why licensed third party controllers from Mad Catz, Nyko or whatever will continue to work fine

I’m glad you “know” that… but after a generalized scare statement like the one which they made I’m willing to bet most people would be thinking of 1st party controllers, i.e. “official, Sony-branded controllers” as the safest option, not “Mad Catz, Nyko or whatever”, which were never mentioned in the statement.

Well those are the best, 3rd party controllers don’t even work for all games. My friend has a mad catz controller that does not have the 6-axis feature and the controller does not work on games that uses the 6-axix like LBP, Resistance, Folklore, Killzone 2 and Uncharted

Better check on your friend, he could have died from the explosion caused by using a non-”official, Sony-branded controller”.

I have updated 2 of my PS3s and only one has Netflix.
Wonder why?

I have a Nyko that works ok.

Hope I dont loose my head using it.

Wouldn’t it be funny if we saw a third party controller that sells well but with the same capability as Move (like Nyko’s Wii Wand +)?
