Castlevania: Lords of Shadow demo available on PSN now

September 29, 2010

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow demo available on PSN now MercurySteam’s re-imagining of the Castlevania franchise with Lords of Shadow is set to release early next month. Konami has just dropped the demo for the game on the Playstation Store.

Review scores for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow have been rolling out and things are looking good. The game could potentially pull off a Batman: Arkham Asylum from the way things are going.

Konami has just dropped the demo for the game on the European Playstation Store. PS3 owners in the States can either wait until next week to get a taste of the demo or download it from the European store.

The demo for the game has been available for PSN+ members since last week. There is no confirmed date as to when Xbox Live gamers will get to sample this title.

My guess is some time next week as it makes sense to release the demo before the release date of October 5. Stay tuned for my impression of the game soon.

I’ll be getting the collector’s edition of this game. I’m very much looking forward to playing this game. I can’t wait for this game to come out. It’s been an incredible gaming year for me.

  2. Barnabe Jones:

I will check this out tomorrow. My gf has PSN+… so, by proxy I have it also :)

btw Critter Crunch was actually a really good game. The adventure mode gets hard as hell towards the end.

  3. phranctoast:

It’s good I still have a EU account.

From looking at reviews so far ign and gamespot 7.5, MC 8, the game appears to be taking hits for not being like other castevania games and too much like GOW. This leads me to believe that this game would be doing better without any association to castevania as it looks like it’s hurting it more than helping.

“btw Critter Crunch was actually a really good game. The adventure mode gets hard as hell towards the end.”

I beat the adventrue mode, the challenges and puzzles are a pain in the ass though

  5. phranctoast:

Critter crunch was a great game on PSN, but I found it barely playable on my iPhone.

It requires precision that doesn’t seem like it could be replicated on the phone.

  6. CarlB:

“PS3 owners in the States can either wait until next week to get a taste of the demo or download it from the European store.”

How do you bypass the store that is already accessed with your XMB? Mine is presently still U.S. as I bought it there even though I am in Japan.

  7. CarlB:

“I found it barely playable on my iPhone.”

Works fine on my 3G and 64GB iPod Touch. Maybe you have an older model?

  8. twilight:

    Phranctoast,
Your right. It means it will probably be another decent game. A game being like GOW is not a bad thing to me.

  9. CarlB:

Maybe another Dante’s Inferno, which was still somewhat enjoyable to play through as a rental for me.

  10. Roca.:

    @CarlB

you have to create a new PSN account and set your region as “Europe” or “Japan”. Under the new account you PSN Store will be based on that region.

  11. phranctoast:

    @Carlb.

-You need to make a new user account. Make you’re address UK when signing up for PSN(find something on google maps). Then when you sign up under that profile you’ll see the UK store.

-I have a 3G. The touch controls stink for it because it’s such a fast paced game and requires precision. I have the demo (it’s a very long demo at that)

    @twilight
Yeah. I’ll download and try it later. The reviews to me seem like they’re blasting it for being a GOW clone and not being too much like the old school CV games. Dantes Inferno got the same treatment and IMO was one of the better games this year right up there with Bayonetta

  12. phranctoast:

They pulled the $20 credit for it on Amazon. I should have put the order in a pulled it prior to the shipping if I didn’t like the demo. Hopefully, it’s just a mistake and it will be offered again…

  13. Roca.:

I will get CLOS instead of Enslaved, personally I think demo was shit. Medal of Honor the week after.

  14. Barnabe Jones:

    Carl b,

Go to the far left of the XMB. Create a new console user, then you’ll get prompted to create a new account when you go online. Just use any address and make the country UK.

I have US and Japanese accounts on mine. I had a Euro account at one point, but I never saved the info.

  15. Barnabe Jones:

I’m not sure what I’m going to do… I actually liked the Enslaved demo, but CLOS looks awesome.

Also Fall Out New Vegas is getting close.

  16. twilight:

    Speaking of Medal Of Honor,
did they censor the contents of this game? I’ve been hearing rumors that they removed the contoversial part from the game?

  17. Barnabe Jones:

The PS2 Castlevania game’s got crapped on for not being as refined as DMC or GoW, even though they were solid games.

Now that they’ve brought Castlevania up to modern hack-and-slash standards, they complain that it’s no Castlevania-ish enough.

From what I’ve read, the story, gameplay, boss battles, and exploration are all great. It sounds good to me.

  18. Roca.:

EA told everyone to fuck off…why will they remove it when there are certainly worse games out there and the movie industry makes millions when they do things like it

  19. twilight:

    Roca,
Good for EA. I absolutely hate censorship.

  20. phranctoast:

    “Speaking of Medal Of Honor,
did they censor the contents of this game? I’ve been hearing rumors that they removed the contoversial part from the game?”

Are they somehow going to change the enemies from the Taliban to some other group when it takes place in Afghanistan? If that wasn’t the controversial part of the game, what was?

  21. phranctoast:

    @BJ
Exactly. Some of these review sites can really just go fuck themselves.

Here’s a little net scavenger hunt. Winner gets recognition as the winner. ;)

Let’s see if someone can find a review site that complained about the narrative nature of the story telling in Resistance 1 and also complained about the non narrative approach Resistance 2 took.

  22. b0xel:

“Let’s see if someone can find a review site that complained about the narrative nature of the story telling in Resistance 1 and also complained about the non narrative approach Resistance 2 took.”

Hmmm, that wouldn’t by any chance be IGN would it?
you know what they say, you can’t spell ignorance without IGN ;)

  23. twilight:

    Phranctoast,
You can play as the Taliban in the game and some people don’t like this.

  24. phranctoast:

    @b0xel

I can’t get to any of those sites. It probably is IGN though. It could be two separate sites. I’d like to find one that contradicts itself. How great would it be if one site complained about the narrative nature, only to complain that the second one wasn’t the same way.

    @twilight
OK. I thought something new happened. Yeah…EA basically told people to Fuck off as Roca said.

  25. Roca.:

“You can play as the Taliban in the game and some people don’t like this”

I bet that’s a small minority somewhere in the middle east.

I remember when Trayarch announced Nazi Zombies for CoD: WaW…Most ppl didnt like and were complaining because it was pretty much an insult to the “dead soldiers” who lost their live in WWII. Well guess what, that turn out to be the ‘best’ feature of COD: WaW

  26. phranctoast:

I bet CON is appalled that they represent terrorist as terrorist…

All US/UK forces need to appear with horns and pointed tails /saracsm

  27. jojo29:

im willing to bet it was IGN that contracdicted itself…they always do that, and buy into the hype…to this day Halo so far, is the only franchise where they reviewed it highly, then ‘re-reviewed’ it and knocked it down like .1-.3 of a point…..

IGN overall though is a horrid site for reviews, their reviewers are a bunch of non-game knowing ‘he look im cool’ type of people..i just go there to watch videos or what not…

  28. phranctoast:

IGN are people and people are flawed. Thats the good thing about actually reading the reviews. You can find out whether or not the problem that exists is problem for you or not.

After reading the review of CV, I realized the game will be great and IGN is knocking it for stupid reasons.

  29. Roca.:

    @Phranc

About IGN giving CLOS a low review score

    http://www.vgarabia.com/2010/09/30/david-cox-respond-to-igns-review-of-lords-of-shadow/

  30. Barnabe Jones:

    Type in IGN’s URL: http://www.ign.com

You get hit with an advertisement, that you have to click through before the page even displays. Classy.

  31. jojo29:

    Phranc:
“IGN are people and people are flawed. Thats the good thing about actually reading the reviews. You can find out whether or not the problem that exists is problem for you or not.”

Nah, i dont give IGN any slack at all…they are pretty much the ‘go to’ mainstream website, so i hold them to the highest standard…and they have sold out so very long ago..

Their reviews are tainted, obviously Konami didn’t fork out enough $$ to warrant a ‘high’ review…im picking it up myself though :)

  32. oldschool1987:

    So where is CON?

  33. CarlB:

“IGN is knocking it for stupid reasons.”

Yet still gave it a “good” review score.

  34. oldschool1987:

Yeah it got a good review but some of their reasons for knocking points off were stupid, like: Because it ain’t like other Castlevania games. I actually think that is a plus.

  35. CarlB:

OS, at least they broke it down:

It doesn’t have nearly the amount of items or exploration, there is a lot of button mashing, there are “aggravating sections where you’re trying to solve a puzzle (many of which are clever) and enemies keep endlessly respawning around you”, “times when you can’t see an enemy that is attacking you or you wish you could look around for secrets on your own”.

These are all points worth mentioning mixed in with plenty of praise for the title. And the bottom line of the review:

“there is no denying that this is a beautiful and enjoyable change of pace.”

If you actually read it, this isn’t a bad review at all.

  36. phranctoast:

    @Carlb

““IGN is knocking it for stupid reasons.”

Yet still gave it a “good” review score.”

“If you actually read it, this isn’t a bad review at all.”

7.5 when many others give it 9 makes it look like IGN are detached from reality. While 7.5 isn’t bad it’s hardly a 9. The review reads as it could be a high 8 and the review score contradicts that.

  37. ncaissie:

    I’m trying this tonight.
    LOL

  38. ncaissie:

“It’s been an incredible gaming year for me.”
Dam I would love to see how you feel about a year you don’t go through 6 consoles. ;)

  39. ncaissie:

“I will check this out tomorrow. My gf has PSN+… so, by proxy I have it also ”
    LMAO

  40. ncaissie:

    Try that with Live!

  41. ncaissie:

“for not being like other castevania games and too much like GOW.”
Yeah that could be good or bad. It didn’t work so well for dante

  42. ncaissie:

“Critter crunch was a great game on PSN, but I found it barely playable on my iPhone.”
That applies to every Iphone game except monkey ball.

  43. Roca.:

I played the demo, combat wise the game is another GoW wannabe and maybe that’s why some are giving it low review score. The QTE sucks in this game.

But graphics are not bad and story wise it seems it doesn’t feel like a castlevania game but rather feels like a great Van Helsing kind of game.

Overall I think the game deserves better than 7.5, specially when Castlevania is a 15-20 hour game.

  44. phranctoast:

Enslaved got a great review on Joystiq.

  45. CarlB:

“7.5 when many others give it 9 makes it look like IGN are detached from reality.”

Gamespot also gave it a 7.5, which is also “good” according to them:

    “the Bad:
    * Fixed camera creates a few problems
    * Some puzzles seem forced and aren’t enjoyable
    * Just about everything in the game is derivative
    * Story loses focus on important characters.”

  46. CarlB:

“Overall I think the game deserves better than 7.5, specially when Castlevania is a 15-20 hour game.”

Why roca? You haven’t even played the game yet. Demos are not full games, which is what they are reviewing (and they are still calling and scoring it “good”), and just because it is 15-20 hours doesn’t mean it rates a higher score.

  47. Roca.:

“Fixed camera creates a few problems”

^ I have to agreed with that [based on the demo] enemies always come from behind and 99% they’ll get you with their first hit attempt.

That and the fact that the QTE sucks were the only issues I experienced with the demo. If you compare it to GOW, it obviously doesnt stand a change but the game is good for what it is.

  48. CarlB:

    fair enough.

  49. phranctoast:

I just get the impression that they tried to not like the game but felt obligated to give it a “good” score because the game is in fact really good.

I got the same impression with Dantes Inferno and that turned into one of the better games of 2010.

  50. CarlB:

I think the whole point system for reviews can be lost in translation to the readers. I have heard the reviewers (not just IGN) voice their frustration several times with it, and with Metacritic’s process. There is this perception that 7.5 is somehow “bad” amongst many gamers, when this just isn’t the case.

I do get the impression they were very big Castlevania fans and were slightly disappointed that several quality gameplay elements/story/character/points were left out, but they still painted a very favorable word picture. It’s sad though because few will get over their own perception of what “7.5″ actually is to them instead of what it is according to the reviewer: “Good”. I think we need to keep this in mind as gamers and not get so wrapped around .5′s or points. I can definitely see how this game or Dante’s Inferno can be “good” but not “epic” like God of War III was. I still don’t think DI was “right up there with Bayonetta” though ;)
