Who is the Nintendo 3DS aimed at?

September 29, 2010

Who is the Nintendo 3DS aimed at?As reported earlier today, Nintendo has announced launch details of the 3DS. The handheld does pack a punch in processing power similar to the PSP. Which begs the question – what demographic is Nintendo aiming for with its powerful handheld?

The price of the device in Japan has been quoted as $300 today, which is more than double the cost of the current DS. This device would also be significantly more expensive than the PSP as well.

One of the reasons why the DS has been so successful is due to its target audience. The main audience for the DS has always been younger children. Lately Nintendo has been trying to broaden its appeal by airing commercials with Beyonce Knowles and other celebrities.

Kids, who begged their parents for a DS in order to play Pokémon, may not be able to appreciate the 3DS. Nintendo is already hyping mature titles for the platform such as Resident Evil and Metal Gear 3D.

Parents will also be reluctant to purchase something as expensive as $300 for their kids. However, I do see this device being successful with the teens and possibly wining over the hardcore audience.

I’m definitely interested. Not for $300 but I can understand why it’s 3D with no glasses. It has to be that good for me to jump but I can wait. Didn’t they mention there will be a online store for all those other versions games that Mike Mentioned. Can’t wait to really see it in action.

We’ve seen Mad World, Red Steel 2, RE4, etc. release on Wii yet kids are still able to appreciate it. Nintendo just wants to appeal to core gamers with 3DS also.

Good point on the price though, even the Wii launched cheaper than this. Though it will probably still be backordered months after release regardless.

I guess Nintendo came to the conclusion that 3D was not bad for young kids developing eyes.

Still no trophy/achievement system… disappointing, but not deal breaking by any means.
