PS3 Move Sports Champion bundle sells 300k in 10 days [UPDATED]

September 30, 2010

PS3 Move Sports Champion bundle sells 300k in 10 days Earlier last week Sony announced that the company sold 140k PS3 Move Sports Champions bundles in the first few days. There is a report today that over 300k units have been sold so far.

According to VGChartz’s magic crystal ball, over 300k units of the PS3 Move bundle have been sold in 10 days across all available territories. The Move will launch in Japan October 21st.

It may not be in the millions, but 300k is definitely a respectable figure. Although, I am not sure what Sony is expecting with a soft Move launch. The company is not marketing the PS3 Move as the next coming like Microsoft is.

Sony indicated that sales of the Move have been within expectations and that device should have long legs. You can clearly see the difference in demeanor from Sony and Microsoft.

Sony is treating the Move for what it is, and that is a peripheral device. Microsoft is treating the Kinect like the “relaunch” of the Xbox 360.

I suppose that is why Microsoft is readying a massive marketing push for the Kinect.

** Writers note:

Some of you have questioned if the PS3 Move is a soft launch or hard launch. I think you guys are getting "marketing" confused with "launch."

Soft launch in this case means that Sony didn’t prep the general market with massive marketing prior to launch (2 to 3 months in advance). The company also allowed the product to trickle out in a limited fashion to those willing to throw a PS3 Move block party and relied heavily on Internet, viral marketing and word of mouth all the way up to launch.

Of course this does not mean that Sony will not push marketing post launch, which is where we are right now.

Sony’s VP Ray Maguire stated in an interview back in August:

Am I expecting a massive day one? Not particularly. We didn’t with EyeToy, either. It went on to be massively successful.

As people saw the value when they tried it they told their friends. Their friends bought it. They told their friends. Word of mouth grew the marketplace. That’s what I expect from Move as well.

Microsoft on the other hand have started general marketing ahead of launch, including primetime adverts, aired demonstrations on talk shows and will be holding a special event to commemorate the launch of Kinect. Microsoft also has three major partners promoting Kinect – Sprint, Chevy and T-Mobile.

Advertising dollars for the Move will clearly be dwarfed by that of Microsoft for the Kinect. As Microsoft’s CEO all the way down to GM have clearly stated that Kinect will be the relaunch of the Xbox 360.

Side note – I know some of you keep up with gaming news daily, and have seen all of Kevin Butler’s videos, but keep in mind that not all of them actually air on network television and many are in the form of viral (stealth) marketing.

I thought Kinect was the second coming of Christ, or that’s the impression I’m getting lol.

Kinect can walk on water…..with a little lag. ;)

that’s because they have nothing else to look forward to.

“The company is not marketing the PS3 Move as the next coming like Microsoft is… Sony is treating the Move for what it is, and that is a peripheral device.”

Right, several KB Move commercials really bolster this.
“the future of gaming” is not just another “peripheral device”.

It’s clear Sony made a strong drive with several Move commercials not only touting Move as the future of gaming, but belittling Kinect as well. Now we are seeing the results of this supposed “soft” launch advertising campaign (wonder what the “hard” launch ad campaign would look like), with everything Sony and KB could put behind it in the way of advertising. If anything this is the first example where Sony has actually had more and better advertising than 360.

Almost every pic of Playstation 3 now comes with the Move controller prominently placed in front of the console, and the controller is even being bundled with the console in a major push.

This is no “soft launch” in advertising, but maybe sales results from it.

“The company is not marketing the PS3 Move as the next coming like Microsoft is…”

Nothing says “next coming” like Epic Move-tage commercial:

  6. FahKinSuPah:

With all the hype that MS has been raising for Kinect, Sony turned around and did the best possible thing it could: Release Move a month ahead of Kinect.

  7. phranctoast:

So two public Move commercials and one released on the internet only commercial constitutes a ‘hard’ launch?

  8. ncaissie:

“The company is not marketing the PS3 Move as the next coming like Microsoft is.”
Yes they are. Watch the KB commercial. I see it on TV all the time. He walks into a house like James bond or something and tells the dad he is staying for 40 days. lol
    Too late! Already tweeted it.

  9. Roca.:

Sony is promition Move as part the “It Only Does Everything” campaign – which are commercials that include everything PS3 related – Games, Bluray, Move, etc.

While Microsoft is hyping Kinect has the new face of the xbox and it seems like the future for the 360 will be more Kinect (or disKinnected) centric than anything else.

  10. phranctoast:

Sony also has Move with Subway too.

MS is promoting with Justin Beiber.

  11. ncaissie:

I was just watching the new GT5 weather video and I’m not impressed. There are plenty of spots where you can only see the driver half of the windshield. What in the fuck is that? Does anyone at Poly actually have a license? Or driven a car before? WTF?

I won’t buy this game if they fucked up that bad.

  12. phranctoast:

Thats funny. I saw the same video and I was impressed enough to think about getting a game I never had any intention of getting. It was that good.

  13. Roca.:

I showed the video to my brother and his jaw literally dropped…..they really went out of their way to get every little detail.

  14. ncaissie:

Mine was compressed on the iphone but only getting 1/2 the view would turn me off.
When you drive a “real” car you get a full view of the windshield and everything past it.

  15. CarlB:

“So two public Move commercials and one released on the internet only commercial constitutes a ‘hard’ launch?”

When they are commercials like that and they have been aired so many times, yes. But not only that, Sony’s take on Move ever since E3 has made it out to be “the future of gaming”. And where is the official count going of every single tv and internet commercial for Move for every region in the world being kept? Even if there was only one (move-tage), we’ve all seen it enough times and it was more than enough to make it out to be “the next coming” for PS3.

Either way, Mike just got through stating earlier, “It appears that both Microsoft and Sony are planning a soft launch of the PS3 Move and Kinect. There is no big marketing push for the devices”… so I don’t know where this “next coming” for Kinect stuff is from all of a sudden.

  16. ncaissie:

How can they call it a true Sim if you can’t see anything on the right? Do they assume everyone is blind in their right eye?

  17. ncaissie:

“Sony’s take on Move ever since E3 has made it out to be “the future of gaming”.”
I sure hope not. I’ll be done gaming after this gen or maybe before.

  18. SW:

In terms of viewing the game it wouldn’t be fantastic if they dedicated the screen to an entire windshield.

Your focal point is going to be the ctr. of your TV which wouldn’t ‘mesh’ with the position of the steering wheel except in some race cars I guess.

I didn’t know you could race VW vans hehehe, those guys.

“Sony Claims Kinect Helped Market Move
    image

It’s one thing to be bringing out a new motion controller, but it’s quite another to be part of a wave of motion gaming.

It might seem that Move and Kinect launching so close to each other would be a cause of concern for Sony, but Shuhei Yoshida, head of Sony Worldwide Studios, said that it actually helped Move by generating more coverage around motion controls in general.

Yoshida said that Sony considered itself fortunate that Microsoft made such a big deal about Kinect, as it didn’t think that Move would have gotten as much coverage without being part of the broader category of motion gaming. He also thought that being able to compare Move to Kinect and the Wii made it easier to highlight what was really unique about Move.

Sony has made good use of the comparison, including Kevin Butler’s on-stage appearance at E3 were he joked about having to use fingers as guns on Kinect, and the websites “Move vs. Stuff” and “Yay Buttons,” which take playful jabs at the competition, while simultaneously showing off the advantages and capabilities of Move.

Move launched last week to quite favorable reviews, and Kinect launches on November 4th.”

  20. phranctoast:

Ever since GDC and E3 this year, the hype train has been really building for the respective motion control solutions from Microsoft and Sony. The latter is about to launch its much talked about PlayStation Move this week, while Microsoft is set to kick off the Kinect launch in November. While Microsoft is practically treating Kinect as if it were a whole new console, Sony has acknowledged that uptake for Move is likely to be more gradual.

According to Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian, the industry is actually more reserved about these new motion platforms than all the hype might suggest.

“Expectations are mixed for Move and Kinect. Based on our conversations, we believe that industry expectations remain somewhat limited for new motion controllers (Move and Kinect), based on high initial price points, lack of compelling core game titles, and limited consumer buzz at this point,” he said.

As usual, software is the key, and neither Sony nor Microsoft has really demonstrated a true ‘killer app’ for Move or Kinect just yet.

  21. gunstar:

As BJ simply put it: Kinect is Xbox720.

Yes you can expect Microsoft to re-launch, re-brand Xbox as Kinect due to the fact that they ran out of core exclusives from the likes of Bunjie, Epic.

Now expect M$ to rely on
    tons of Kinect games
along with your usual timed exclusive multi-plats
    & timed exclusive DLC
    perhaps a Move clone
and lots of non-gaming related stuff on Xbox Live
… as they keep on cutting the 360 price tag lower and lower to Wii levels.

That is how they are gonna make some money.

  22. Rimmer:

the Kevin Butler commercials are brilliant, so why have they started to show these cringe worthy move ads in the uk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJmoSwhzqiA ? It makes the “i invented windows 7″ ads look like a stroke of genius.

  23. phranctoast:

It appears to me that Microsoft is putting a lot more into Kinect than Sony is doing with Move from the linked articles.

I still think both probably fall into the category of hard launch though. However I don’t believe two broadcasted commercials and one internet one constitutes a hard launch.

It’s a hard launch because Sony will be demonstrating Move in stores until Feb-March 2011.

It’s a hard launch because Sony teamed up with Coca Cola and Subway to help promote Move.

It’s a hard launch because there will be a revision to the console SKU’s to have a version of the PS3 released with Move.

All these things, Microsoft is doing as well. They appear to be pushing Kinect a bit harder and plan on spending a lot more in Marketing. They have even publicly said that they believe Kinect will sell more than the 360/PS3 and wii did at launch.

It’s important to note also, that these sales figures don’t include Japan. It release later this month there.

-Gears of War 3 got delayed until fall 2011 “to make it the marquee title for the holiday seasons” Seems like they don’t have much to choose from for their holiday release LMAO.

  28. FahKinSuPah:

    @Roca

“EA decided to remove the word “Talibans” from the MP of Medal of Honor..They’ll be called “Opposing Force””

Maybe they should have called them “Those people everyone hates” or “Camel jockies”.

Or just call them by name, which would be something like “Muhammed Muhammed Ahkmed Muhammed Jihad”

did you leave your meds at home again?

  44. CarlB:

“I still think both probably fall into the category of hard launch though.”

Agreed. If anything both Microsoft and Sony are treating these devices like the “next coming”. Did Eyetoy, Eye, or Vision cameras ever have a manufacturer console bundle or nearly as much effort/exposure put behind them? I don’t think so. They were truly “soft launch” efforts. Neither Move or Kinect is a soft launch in ad campaigns, but the resulting numbers at launch may define them as such to some.

The initial announcement of Kinect seems like it drove Sony to push Move more, but I think each is benefitting from the other’s existence, at least in the effort behind them to succeed.

  45. Mike Ferro:

Hey guys I think you are getting confused – see updated story above.

  46. CarlB:

It’s good to know your personal definition of soft launch Mike. I’ve also seen other sites reporting that this was deemed a soft launch because of the numbers sold. It’s fairly evident that Sony made a much larger push with this than they did with EyeToy though, and that Microsoft is better at marketing their products (anything from the launch of the 360 itself to present games) is no suprise at this point in the generation.

    @Mike

true, also the 300K was only the Sports Champions bundle…ppl who already have the Eye bought the Move stand alone instead and many other move devices were also included in the PS3 $399 Move bundle. So there might be many more Move out there.
