October 23, 2010

Games for Windows to get a much needed reboot Games for Windows have been ailing in the PC market. The platform’s biggest competition is Steam by Valve. It appears that Microsoft will be rebooting Games for Windows in hopes to capture more members.

Microsoft recently stated that the company will begin focusing more on PC gaming. The company has pulled away from PC gaming over the past decade with reductions in first party development.

Apparently Microsoft will be re-launching Games for Windows on November 15th. The re-launch will feature over 100 new and classic titles that will be available for download. The company will have to step up its game on the PC if truly wants to compete with Steam as it is by far the most popular gaming platform on the PC.

According to reports Games for Windows will get a major face lift and some additional features for its re-launch. Publishers such as Square Enix, Take Two and Capcom have offered support most likely in the way of game discounts.

No one likes GfW. No one.

  3. CaptBirdman:

    Bloody AGREED.

  4. CAD:

I’m not into PC at all but why would no one like GFW when it ‘s free and Live provides a better service then steam. Last time I checked Steam didn’t even provide cross game chat or parties the only advantage was updates. I’m not sure if Live on console is much different from PC but as far as features I think Live is better then steam.

  5. CaptBirdman:

Cross game chat seems like the big selling point for the M$ bandwagon…. I can’t be bothered with the feature any longer. I’d rather concentrate on the game at hand, or listen to my Beats By Dre whilst playing

  6. Liquid:

CAD are you that fucking blinded?? Steam has done a lot more for PC gamers than windows live. . .oh wow cross game chat. . .how about left for dead 1 and 2 for 15 dollars. . .thats a reason alone why steam is better. so fuck cross game chat and games for windows live.

  7. surv1vor:

Steam supports all of those things CAD, when was the last time you checked?

  8. Roca.:

Steam is way ahead of PSN, GFW and second rate XBL…

CAD, stfu if you don’t know wat ur talking about..

  9. CarlB:

At least they are improving, though it took them long enough. If they continue to add value to this service over a couple of years or so it may come close to competing with steam…

I checked about a month or two ago and I didn’t see those features on the list.

If you are one your PC, there are many options for cross-game chat without needing a service built into your Digital games content provider.

Steam is pretty awesome, but on the whole, I still prefer to buy hard copies of my games. Deals are really easy to find for physical PC games in the box.

  12. SW:

I’m actually the opposite of you Jofa.

I prefer digital distribution. I think you can find deals either way tho, and I like how I can just check the specials from my comfy chair :)

Here’s a neat URL if you have a steam account :

    steamcalculator.com

Just whack in your username and it tells you how much you’ve spent on stuff with steam. I have a buddy with over $3500 on his account……

  13. CAD:

    Jofa

I fully agree you can’t trade in digital copies.

If I have to get another service to work with another service then what the point really when you can get it all in one place.

  15. Rhino:

Fuck off CAD, Steam has cross game chat I can join into a game that a friend is playing, which I believe is the same as parties.

I use the chat quite a bit to invite people into games I’m playing.

“If I have to get another service to work with another service then what the point really when you can get it all in one place.”

Isn’t that the same with netflix on your precious 360 Gollum?? You need to pay for Gold service to get the privilege to pay for the others?

  16. CAD:

Sorry Rino but parties don’t work that way. parties is basically a voice connection that allows upto 8 people to chat together regardless of what game your playing or if your just chillin on the dashboard or watching a movie or a video. if your in a game with your party the main voice chat for the game is disabled but you can switch on the fly between your party chat or the in game chat where the rest of the people playing can be heard. Cross game chat is basically a private chat session where you can talk to someone in the same manner parties work. On LIVE you can have upto 4 private chat sessions. It’s all cross game chat really regardless of parties or private.

  17. CAD:

You can do a few other things with Parties like take your party into a game or send invites to the party instead of individually. It’s a feature I truly enjoy and a feature that is perfect for online gaming.

“Isn’t that the same with netflix on your precious 360 Gollum?? You need to pay for Gold service to get the privilege to pay for the others?”

Rhino you know very well that that is a stupid comment because paying the fee gets you so much then just netflix. it allows for HD and a way to stream netflix on your TV. Plus you get multiplayer gaming, Facebook, Twitter, Last.FM, ESPN and more.

  18. SW:

@CAD – You don’t understand how PC gaming works for a lot of us, and that’s OK. But we’ve had all of what Live offers for a long time.

  19. Rhino:

@CAD all those things you’ve previously mentioned can be done in Steam. You have no fucking idea how PC gaming on Steam works do you? And Steam does’t charge to use their system.

LOL coming from the man with a thousand stupid comments. “because paying the fee gets you so much then just netflix” so once you pay for your gold membership…everything else is free after that? Just so if I read your statement right (because heaven forbid should you be proven to be aright royal tool), netflix etc are FREE (and I emphasis the word free) add-ons after you have paid for you gold membership?

There is nothing that you need to pay an additional fee for once membership is paid for?

And fuck off with the facebook and twitter references cause they are totally free on the PS3.

  20. Roca.:

XBL is such a ripoff when better services like PSN, Steam and other are offering the same services (and more) for free.

  21. phranctoast:

poor CAD. He’s so far up MS’s ass he can’t even properly defend them.

  22. ncaissie:

I have netfix on my PC, PS3, iPod touch and iPhone and I don’t pay to access on any of those devices.

  23. ncaissie:

Pretty much any screen in the house.
Oh and I haven’t used it yet but the wii also.
