Sony sells 4.1 million PS3 Move units
Only one day after Microsoft’s Kinect sales announcement, Sony responds back by sending out its PS3 Move sales numbers. According to Sony the company has sold 4.1 million PS3 Moves to retailers so far since launch.
This seems like an incredible achievement considering the meager $1 million marketing spent per territory, which contrasts with Microsoft’s half a billion Kinect marketing budget. Granted, there is a price difference as the PS3 Move can range from $50/$100/$150 depending on the configuration, while the Kinect costs $150. However, I suppose it’s sort of like comparing sales of the Xbox 360 which ranges from $199/$299, to the PS3 which costs $299 as well. It’s all really apples to oranges, but of course no one seems to want to care.
Just recently, Microsoft Xbox division head, Don Mattrick revealed that the company sold 2.5 million units. Since neither Sony nor Microsoft typically report sales figures of actual sold to consumers, both are likely announcing sold to retailer’s numbers.
The 4.1 million units include the sales of Black Friday weekend in the states as well. The PS3 Move has been out for about two months (less in other territories such as Japan – October 21). The sales figures only account for the Move bundle/controller and do not include the Navigation controller or the Playstation Eye.
Here is an excerpt from the press release:
PlayStation Move offers more than 30 supported/dedicated titles for the North American region up to date with a vast line-up of software titles from all genres and all types of audiences. Some of the successful titles include Sports Champions, Start the Party, EyePet Move Edition, MAG, SingStar Dance and more. Upcoming PlayStation Move titles include the platform-defining franchises like Killzone 3 and LittleBigPlanet 2 that will further establish PlayStation Move as the must have motion experience for casual and hard-core gamers alike.

It seems that hardcore gamers prefer the Move.
November 30th, 2010
While I’d obviously agree as it’s tough to find anything a core
player would want on kinect I don’t see how you got that from this article.
November 30th, 2010
While Kinect is dedicated to casual games now, it is tough to find anything that would make a core gamer want to invest in Move over the Dual Shock.
The numbers make sense considering 1-4 Move controllers are sometimes sold to equate to the same amount of players on Kinect.
November 30th, 2010
“The numbers make sense considering 1-4 Move controllers are sometimes sold to equate to the same amount of players on Kinect.”
Please.
I’d say a very, very small percentage of consumers want to shell out $150 for two Move controllers, let alone $200 and $250 for 3 and 4 controllers, respectively. Get your head out of your arse. You just don’t like the fact Move was always going to outsell Kinect. I really could care less what your response is to this, because trolls that pose are worse than regular trolls– so I’m ignoring you this thread.

“Since neither Sony nor Microsoft typically report sales figures of actual sold to consumers, both are likely announcing sold to retailer’s numbers.”
@Mike
its been confirmed that kinect numbers are indeed sell thru- to customers, i think this article needs to be edited/updated
November 30th, 2010
Wasn’t there a quote floating around here somewhere about how the sales relate to sub controllers and such (e.g. if they’re included in the 4.1m total)?
Be interesting to see if it does or does not include sub controllers.
November 30th, 2010
@ToshithegreaT:
“its been confirmed that kinect numbers are indeed sell thru- to customers, i think this article needs to be edited/updated”
Where is it confirmed? I have the original press release and it doesn’t say that. I would be interested to see that as Microsoft never reports sold at retail figures. Usually these manufacturers only report what they sold to retailers.
@SW:
I address this question in the article. Sub/navigation and PS3 eye are not counted in Move sales. Both Kinect and Move are considered as controller SKUs and counted as such.
November 30th, 2010
@Mike
don’t bother with Toshi, he’s too busy playing with Kinect to know the actual facts
@Toshi
you just got owned
@SW
Sony confirmed their sales numbers don’t count PS Eyes and Sub controller
November 30th, 2010
“I’d say a very, very small percentage of consumers want to shell out $150 for two Move controllers”
Only consumers who desire to play two player games with Move, or use two Move controllers for fighting/archery/sword & shield games, etc.
November 30th, 2010
I paid $200 for two bundles and I’m buying two sub controllers.
November 30th, 2010
Anyone know how many controllers move supports?
November 30th, 2010
“I’d say a very, very small percentage of consumers want to shell out $150 for two Move controllers”
I would agree… but look at how many people who own a Wii who have 2-4 controllers. They work out to be the same price (you don’t need to buy 4 bundles).
November 30th, 2010
I didn’t say “sub” controllers- I meant ping pong ball controllers. A sub controller doesn’t count, according to Sony, because it doesn’t work alone.
And I also didn’t say ppl wouldn’t purchase more than 1, just said not many will, so 4 million sold are great numbers for Move.
December 1st, 2010
Where is it confirmed? I have the original press release and it doesn’t say that. I would be interested to see that as Microsoft never reports sold at retail figures. Usually these manufacturers only report what they sold to retailers.
@MIKE
Aaaron greenberg clarified it on twitter when asked, also ign confirmed
His twitter post
“.@godfree @hiphopgamer remember sell-in is very different than actual sell-through to consumers (actual demand) we have been reporting…. ”
” Microsoft announced it has sold 2.5 million Kinect units worldwide in the first 25 days on sale.
Microsoft clarified saying these reported Kinect sales are sold to customers.”

December 1st, 2010
Well there it is. It’s sold through to the customer. Update please. It’s obvious that they know how many sold to consumers because of the update that happens when you connect Kinect to the 360.

“I didn’t say ‘sub’ controllers- I meant ping pong ball controllers.”
That’s what I’m talking about, the main controllers.
“just said not many will”
So you think not many people will want to play two player games or games that could be played with two main controllers like fighting, archery, sword and shield type games?
December 1st, 2010
Doesn’t The Fight require two controllers?
December 1st, 2010
by the end next year 90% of all PS3 releases will have move compactability and around 60% of PS3 releases will be in 3-D. Also just a thorght, all PS3 games will have to support 3-D after a certin date next year
December 1st, 2010
“Half the people who want to buy Move, which went on sale in September, are parents, according to Sony. Apparently 60 per cent of the people who want Move already own Nintendo’s console – they want to upgrade their motion-sensing experience apparently.”
Upgraded wii-motes, nice.
Wait a sec here… how many wii-motes… cough, erm… Move controllers does this family have?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IouhLjSrYNk
Personally I think it’s a split. About half of purchases will be only one main controller, while the other half is one or more, with most of them buying only two. “Not many” will buy 3 or more.
December 1st, 2010
“It’s obvious that they know how many sold to consumers because of the update that happens when you connect Kinect to the 360.”
No one jumped all over this?
I’m surprised.
So CAD….How does that work for Christmas gifts that haven’t been hooked up yet MS knows they sold them?
That was a dumb dumb thing to say.
oh…
That IGN didn’t mention sell through.
December 1st, 2010
“No one jumped all over this?
I’m surprised.”
I was letting you do the honours.
December 1st, 2010
I question sell through for one simple reason.
It takes about a month for data to be compiled and brought to you for NPD results, and that’s just one territory. So MS gathered that data (all on a Holiday Weekend) for the whole world in three days?
IDK..sounds sketchy. I could believe they could have sold to retailer data in that time frame…but sell through worldwide in three days.
December 1st, 2010
Agreed. Sold to retailers sounds more reasonable.
That PS3 sold 40% more in three months with multiple units compared to what Kinect did in 1 month with 1 unit isn’t surprising. What’s going to be surprising is if M$ can make back the $500M they spent in advertising. Guess that’s what Gold users are for.
December 1st, 2010
move will sell more after ape escape fury and sorcery are released.
December 1st, 2010
@CAD/Toshi
The press release speaks volume – Sony’s number were “shipped units” and many websites claimed the 4.1M were “sold units” – for a guy with a “MBA” you are pretty stupid.
December 1st, 2010
Good question carlb.
They need to sell around 3.5 million to make up the advertising cost.
December 1st, 2010
or 3.3M to be precise.
December 1st, 2010
@CAD
Here’s something else to ponder. If MS was to use people logged on with Kinect to determine owners, wouldn’t that also screw up their sell through numbers with all the Kinects being given away?
December 1st, 2010
“It’s obvious that they know how many sold to consumers because of the update that happens when you connect Kinect to the 360″
@CAD
what if you don’t have internet? man, you’re getting dumber with each passing day.

CAD has been seriously owned.
December 1st, 2010
hahahahahahaha and CAD is no where to be found!
December 1st, 2010
They did say they expected 5 million in sales before the end of the year…
December 1st, 2010
“(you don’t need to buy 4 bundles).”
I actually did get two bundles but one is the sports and one is the Eyepet.
@Toshi
Where does it say for fact that Sony is talking Shipped and not sold to customers? It’s all speculation and it doesn’t even matter.
December 1st, 2010
Sony clarified. It’s shipped to retailers. joystiq had multiple updates on their post where they contacted Sony.
December 1st, 2010
If they succeed with 5 million, they should more than make up for advertising.
I wonder how much they need to sell to break even on R+D (or buying the R+D Israeli company), and Kinect costs. ($56 to make according to sources)
December 1st, 2010
OK
December 1st, 2010
MS tweeted that their data is sell through, but I can’t possibly see how that data could collected in such a short amount of time, worldwide.
December 1st, 2010
this will like when the first ever dualshock controller came out. it’ll be a ninche product now but when the PS4 comes out it’ll be redefining our expections of what games are and how they can be played.
December 1st, 2010
sell through retail?
their data included black friday sales – not even gamestop/bestbuy have that sort of info so early.
When MS announced their W7P sales during its first 4 days, it was units shipped to retailers
December 1st, 2010
Exactly. I call bullshit.

@Roca
Since u have compresion problems, let me put it this way,
Both sony and ms reported units sold..
When engadget and joystiq asked sony, they told them its units shipped to retailers
When ign asked MS, they reported sell-through to consumers..
If u still don’t understand, let me know
December 1st, 2010

@ncaissevaka POS guy j/k
here u go
“Update: There seems to be some confusion as to whether this figure represents the number of Moves actually purchased by consumers or sold to retailers. Though the U.S. press release revealing the sales posted after the jump explicitly says “sold,” the Japanese press release mentions “the quantity delivered to the dealer” in a footnote. We’ve contacted Sony for clarification.
Update 2: A Sony representative explained that the 4.1 million actually represents Move units shipped to stores, adding “While we don’t disclose our exact sell-through number, the key is that our retailers continue to ask for more Move units and are taking every unit we can supply them with based on their sales.” Which, you know, would have been a cool thing to put in that press release, we think.”

“compresion problems”
@Toshi
Is that a new desease in India or Google Translate didn’t provide you with the correct word?
Microsoft has never provided units sold to costumer okay…either way the only one who seems to care about the sales on these motion devices is you. But we all know why, because you xbots have nothing but Kinect for the next 10 months or so.
December 1st, 2010
“the key is that our retailers continue to ask for more Move units and are taking every unit we can supply them with based on their sales”
That means they shipped so many and had to supply more because they sold them “to customers”? or “to cats and dogs”?
December 1st, 2010
WOW Roca the troll got owned

How did anyone get owned?
I’m aware that MS is saying that this is sell through. I simply don’t believe them. I question anyone that believes that MS could has gotten all that data that quickly world wide. (2 full days, on a Holiday weekend)
How this sounds even remotely realistic. *rolls eyes*
I would bet anything that MS is embellishing the truth.
Not that it matters one way or another. Both MS and Sony has stated that they have been moving stock frequently. Sold to retailers might as well as be sold to consumers as far as anyone here is concerned.
A Month ago Sony “Shipped” 2.5M units. It they weren’t being sold, would Sony have bothered to “Ship” another 1.6M units?
The things that you guys nit pick on can give one a headache.
December 1st, 2010
Wow, Sony is doing great! I wonder if the industry will finally show growth.
December 1st, 2010
good news for sony. they need every dime they can get after the billions lost on the ps3′s life so far….
great job!
December 1st, 2010
Carl
When I went on my sub controllers tirade, I was NOT talking to you. I’ve been slightly ignoring you more and more because as phranc said
“The things that you guys nit pick on can give one a headache.”
However, to address your point, I think you’re being extremely naive or exceedingly stupid to believe 50% of buyers will get 2 or more PPB controllers. Do not used the Wii to back up your claims (this is where your stupidly kicked in, for me). The Wii uses it’s motion controllers for around 97% (guesstimate, sue me) of it’s games. PS3- not even 3%. Not to mention the relatively small sales of each individual Move ONLY games.
Breakdown
-Small install base for Move ONLY games
-Even smaller number of games REQUIRING two or more PPB controllers (for single player)
-those uninitiated probably don’t want to spend $150 on 2 PPB controllers (with cam)
=/= 50% of buyers will get 2 or more PPB controller.
Like I said, only a very small % of consumers are concerned with buying more than 1 PPB controllers. For a better example, look at the relative sales of Dualshock 3s. These sell “well,” relative to the games.
December 1st, 2010
@cap,
“I think you’re being extremely naive or exceedingly stupid to believe 50% of buyers will get 2 or more PPB controllers.”
Are there games being made for it that require two controllers? How is it stupid or naive to think approximately half the market who buys move in the first place would be those would want to play these games combined w/parents (quoted as half of the people who want to buy move) who would want to have their children play together or play together as a family?
But you’re right I suppose. It’s not as though Sony is making or marketing games with two move controllers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koRHYqrR9yM&feature=related
December 2nd, 2010
I could believe almost two per household. It’s probably a good average as some people may buy 4. Personally, I’d just buy one now and another at some later date but my circumstances are different. My brother in law has two.
December 2nd, 2010
You can at least cut that number in 1/2. I would say most households would get two or more.
I have 2 and will get more later if needed.
December 2nd, 2010
After practically finishing the Sly Collection I was interested in Move for the mini games. It’s pretty tough to find the Move controller not in a bundled package (I have the Eye already). I have to assume even more could be attributed to the sales figure if they would be made available. Amazon hasn’t had it for weeks.
December 2nd, 2010
But the shortages are a ruse. LOL
December 2nd, 2010
I’m not inclined to believe that honestly. Again, I’ve conceeded that there will be people that will but more than one. And I’m not discounting the future, but I was talking now anyway. There may be folks who have 6 to play madden or whatever. But that market will be a small one. I’m myself looking to get one, and maybe two if my GF or little brothers want to give it a go (and I’m not being selfish).
And Carl– goddamn man! You would argue Eels ate mongoose if you could without sounding like a blithering idiot!
Of course there will be ads showing “the family” playing the Move together. But is that the reality of the situation? Nah, I don’t think so. I have a large family- 6 in home. While I understand every situation is unique, in my home I’m pretty much the hardcore gamer, with everyone else not too fussed about it. I’d say those ads cater to a really specific clientele, mate. I remember those old Blu Ray ads showing “the family” watching films together– umm, how many of you spend the majority of your film viewing with your entire family???
(I’m an exception- I really prefer to watch film alone, at home and the cinema. Just me)
December 3rd, 2010
cap, I think it’s safe to say we disagree. Well, actually nc, phranc, and me disagree with you. And I’ll even do you a solid and not imply you are “extremely naive or exceedingly stupid” simply because of what you think. later.
December 3rd, 2010
“umm, how many of you spend the majority of your film viewing with your entire family???”
I do. On the weekends we usually watch a movie or two together on the projector. After the kids fall asleep my GF and I watch an adult movie.
December 3rd, 2010
^^^LMAO
December 3rd, 2010
I do believe that no home will ever need two sub controllers.
December 3rd, 2010
I will be getting two. LOL My kids are to little to hold the six axis in one hand and the move controller in the other.
December 3rd, 2010
I wasn’t aware of a game that allows you to use two subcontrollers are one time.
December 3rd, 2010
*at one time
December 3rd, 2010
Move Heroes?
December 3rd, 2010
No but it the game requires one sub and one main you need two subs if you have to players. For instance FPS Co-Op split screen.
December 3rd, 2010
In fact I have 3 kids and 4 PS3s so I’ll probably get 2 more of each by spring. Depends on if I can get into it or not. That I will know after Christmas.
December 3rd, 2010
Will Move Heroes be split screen? Co op MP doesn’t necessarily mean that anymore.
December 3rd, 2010
“that allows you to use two subcontrollers”…
“No but it the game requires one sub and one main you need two subs if you have to players.”
So yes.
@phranc
I haven’t seen a split screen screen yet phranc…
December 3rd, 2010
Resident Evil 5 is the only one I think.
I’ve played MAG and Heavy Rain without the Navigation controller and it works just fine.
