MotorStorm: Apocalypse – a one of a kind racing game

December 22, 2010

MotorStorm: Apocalypse – a one of a kind racing game MotorStorm: Apocalypse is Evolution Studio’s next big game. Launching next year, the game will have been under development for nearly three years after Pacific Rift back in 2008.  Evolution shows off just what the studio has been working on for the past few years.

The studio has been working to develop what is clearly its most ambitious project since the first MotorStorm. The game takes place during the apocalypse where the world is literally crumbling around you as you race through the city.

As the buildings and bridges fall around you the ground shakes and splits apart leaving only a fraction of a second for you to decide your next move. As you barely escape certain death by vaulting over a fallen sky scraper, you hear helicopters flying towards you. These helicopters are part of the military and PMC groups intent on shooting you down in order to prevent you from getting any further into the apex of the crumbling city.

Welcome to Festival, an extensive single player campaign mode with a story about racing and survival in MotorStorm: Apocolypse.

This scenario raises many questions as you participate in the last insane race or party before the end of the world. One thing is for certain – the ride is exhilarating and so intense your knuckles will be white from gripping the controller.

What I played of it didn’t leave me terribly impressed. This may sound silly, but I was playing it in 3D which took away some of the visceral feel of it, it makes the screen dark and a little confusing to process at the speed you need to in a game as fast paced as this.

  2. phranctoast:

That’s odd. I heard the motorstorm 3D implementation was very good from many many sources. Of course they were talking about pacific and the 3D update.

I’ll have to sift through the ridiculous psn update and find some HD videos of this video.

I have to assume that these guys are slighty ticked at the existance of split second. Dynamic race courses and all.

This game will give Forza a run for its money in the arcade racer department

  4. Kushy:

Yo check this out! This game is a beast! :)

  5. Liquid:

    Motorstorm 3 looks fucking epic!

  6. JofaMang:

Games looks kind of cool, but the premise is fucking stupid. How did the natural progress = Sand then Jungle then APOCALYPSE? I wont be bothered with this one.

  7. Liquid:

    jofa

i think its a cool concept, even doh its a bit farfetched it still looks like an enjoyable game.

  8. phranctoast:

I agree it’s far fetched. Who the hell gives a crap about racing when it’s the middle of the apocalypse?

Doesn’t mean it will be a bad game.

It’ll give the West Coast people practice for 2012.

  9. kwagga...g...:

Is it going to run in 1080p?

  10. phranctoast:

doubt it. Not too many games run at 1080p.

  11. JofaMang:

“It’ll give the West Coast people practice for 2012.”

i loled at that one :D

  12. kwagga...g...:

lol @Roca…I really cant believe people say that Forza Arcadesport is a sim.

  13. Godless:

looks like Split second has stolen the thunder from this a little, but it should be a great game if it’s different enough.

  14. Roca.:

    You better believe man…

  15. phranctoast:

It’ll likely be different from split second where while the course is changing, you personally aren’t changing the course to mess up the competition.

  16. SW:

“doubt it. Not too many games run at 1080p.”

    On console, mwhahahahahha.

I’m sorry, it wouldn’t be a normal day if I didn’t try to push my fading platform of choice into the conversation :(

Altho, sidenote : I am ashamed to admit I have grown almost dependent on DCUO… I’m not sure how either.

  17. kwagga...g...:

    what fading platform?

  18. phranctoast:

    PC.

  19. SW:

    Actually its the original gameboy.

    I typo’d and meant to type 144p… ;)

  20. phranctoast:

    lol.

Nice to know DCUO is good enough for that. Maybe it will be the game that really gets MMO’s prominent on consoles.

  21. surv1vor:

I should probably that I’ve never liked 3D anyway, not until we do away with the glasses! Perhaps to someone who likes it it looks good, I’m just speaking subjectively.

  22. Barnabe Jones:

I downloaded DCUO. When I tried playing I got the patch prompt, but it wouldn’t download.

  23. Roca.:

    @BJ
many ppl think the same. The patch is 1hr-6hr download (depending on your connection) so it takes a while in order for someone to notice that it’s actually downloading.

  24. Rhino:

Played the ME2 demo…me like very much :-)

  25. Barnabe Jones:

    Roca,

I thought so. The file seemed pretty tiny for an MMO beta. I guess most of the download is done via the patch. I’ll have to let it sit today.

Anyone know how long the beta is scheduled to last?

  26. Roca.:

    for about 3 more weeks…
The beta will give you an idea of what to expect from the game. The game is very action-centric, with a lot of quests, places to explore.

But the best part about it is creating your hero/villian.

  27. twilight:

I downloaded the ME2 and Dead Space 2 demo. I will check them out this weekend. I also purchased Prince Of Persia The Two Thrones. Afterall, you can’t have too much Prince Of Persia.

  28. phranctoast:

    @twilight
I saw you playing the forgotten sands the other day. I need to go back to that and beat it. I’m pretty close now.

How is sands of time and warrior within in HD on the PS3? I heard mixed things, and if the effort wasn’t really put in when compared to Sly Collection, GOW collection etc…..

If that’s the case, I’ll pass. It would also be nice if there was some QA on the HD remakes to assure that they’re good. GOW and Sly passed the test. I’m sure ICO/SOTC will as well.

  29. twilight:

    Phranctoast,
I don’t have the original Sands Of Time downloaded yet. I can only comment on the Prince Of Persia Warrior Within because this is the only download I have played a little bit of. As far as the picture quality goes, it is a sub par high definition effort in comparison to the games you mentioned. If you’re looking for a top notch graphical re-make, then this game is not it. I don’t own a Ps2 so I just bought these games to be able to play them on the Ps3 because I love the Prince Of Persia series.

  30. Roca.:

early leave today …and tomorrow off

    Merry Christmas to all…

  33. Ivan_PSP:
