Nintendo 3DS potentially harmful to young children
Nintendo issued a warning earlier today about its upcoming 3DS handheld. The 3DS is capable of displaying a 3D image without the use of glasses.
According to Engadget, Nintendo’s guideline warns that children under six should not use the 3DS. The guideline also warns that 3D games will cause eye fatigue much faster than 2D games. Nintendo recommends gamers to take a break after a 30 minute session.
The reason why Nintendo warns against six year olds from playing with the 3DS may have something to do with eye muscle development. Apparently, if children watch 3D images for a long time the eyes will have a difficult time working properly with depth perception.
Nintendo does quell any concerns that this may be unique to the 3DS by indicating that other forms of 3D such as movies also have similar warnings.
There is probably another factor to consider, the type of 3D being used on the 3DS requires that your head remain in the sweet spot to prevent blurring. Young children may ignore this sweet spot and end up playing for hours in an unfocused state harming vision.

My son is nearly 7 and I only let him play his DS in 30min lots. He doesn’t get to play all day and besides he’s the type of kid who would rather get out into the back yard and kick the ball around, play basketball or even ride his scooter.
