Used games lose value faster than cars

December 31, 2010

In case you hadn’t already realized it, we’re all being ripped off when it comes to used games.

It’s a well-known fact that new cars depreciate at a stupidly-fast rate, with the used price often 50 to 60 percent lower than the price you paid for it in the showroom after just a couple of years. But it turns out games lose their value even faster than cars.

This is according to Which? Conversation, with the article claiming Red Dead Redemption lost 70 percent of its value in as little as three days. That seems excessive, but the point remains that the only ones who benefit from a healthy pre-owned market are the retailers who buy and sell for huge profits.

As the writer of the article says, we really only have ourselves to blame for this because we accept the shoddy prices offered. A better alternative is to sell the game on Amazon, eBay or one of the other online marketplaces and cut out the money-grabbing middleman. That way you could even make a profit.

Now, who wants to buy a Ford Focus?

If you are stupid enough to sell your games there then you get what you deserve. I for one don’t sell my games, I don’t need the money that bad. If I did then I would just rent.
I buy used games some times because used are just as good as new.

Nothing lost value faster than Kev’s credibility.

    Amazon.com!!

Look at how cheap you can get games new now. CoD, Assassins Creed, FO:NV, Fable 3, etc, etc all dropped to about half price within a few short weeks.

Why would anyone pre-order from GameStop? Wait 2 weeks and pay half price.
