Xbox 360 hits 50 million milestone

December 31, 2010

Microsoft has now sold 50 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide, according to the latest estimates.

VGChartz has stated that the Xbox 360 has hit the 50 million consoles sold milestone, doing so on Christmas week. This has pushed the Xbox 360 into fifth place in terms of the bestselling home consoles of all time, ahead of the SNES, and with only the NES, Wii, PS1, and PS2 ahead of it. Even when handheld consoles are added to the mix, the Xbox 360 is now the ninth bestselling console of all time.

The Xbox 360 sales figures to date are heavily skewed towards America, and to a lesser extent Europe. Just 1.43 million have so far been sold in Japan, the spiritual (of not actual, any more) home of gaming.

I can’t see the Xbox 360 ever surpassing the DS on 143 million consoles sold and counting, or the PS2 on 140 million consoles sold and counting. But 50 million is no small feat, and Microsoft should be applauded for doing so well with only its second console.

Yeah. 20 sold and 30 million replacement units.
I would bet on that too.

nice try. You forgot the ps3.

Sure they did a great job sucking in 20 million retards.
50 million sold and 20 million owners great job douchebags!

  4. ncaissie:

Come to think of it finding 20 million morons isn’t that great. Look at all the wiitards in the world.

  5. ncaissie:

Yes it is 2am and I have had quite a few. LOL

    lmao

  9. twilight:

Ncaissie is correct. We will probably never know the true sales numbers of the Xbox360 due to the high replacement rate of the system because of hardware failure. With that being said, it is quite impressive that Microsoft still managed to sell this many units.

  10. CON:

WOW 140 sales for the ps2! Puts the failure of the ps3rd into perspective.

What type of moron would buy another xbox when it can be replaced for free?? Stupid arguement lol but I wouldn’t expect anything less from you guys.

“What type of moron would buy another xbox when it can be replaced for free?? ”

Stop being so thick. The 3 year warranty is OVER. And most of the damage was done prior to the 3 year warranty, hence THE NEED FOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY IN THE FIRST PLACE.

You’re such a bloody wanker CON. Why do you post here?

  12. CON:

    Capt

Show me the figures for 3 year old consoles that break down cus I’d love to see this 30 million figure you guys have popped out of the top of your head or shut the fuck up!

  13. CaptBirdman:

Hold on you waste of an existence–

I never said the 30 million figure was accurate. I just said you needed to account for the grace period before the 3 year warranty was implemented. And if you’d calm down, Pike, you’d realise ” 3 year old consoles” would be the ones that fell in the warranty.

I reckon you meant 5 year old consoles?

  14. CON:

    Pike??

    I’m not english you twat.

“I just said you needed to account for the grace period before the 3 year warranty was implemented.”

No you didn’t, you’re contradicting yourself. The RROD issue has long since been over. Fuck off you bitter little ps3rd troll

    50 MILLION

    SUCK IT

    Want to retract your statement?

” Fuck off you bitter little ps3rd troll.

LOL here we go with the troll talk. Do I need to give you the definition too? You nerds seem to think disagreement equals “troll”, but I assure you this isn’t the case Pike.

Anyway, I contributed 2 sales to that 50 million mate– I am a 360 owner, and had my 360 2 years before I had a PS3. Sorry, you’re grabbing straws again.

  16. CON:

“Anyway, I contributed 2 sales to that 50 million mate”

I ain’t your “mate” buddy. Sure you did you pike fanboy troll. 50 million ;)

  17. CaptBirdman:

    “I ain’t your “mate” buddy.”

    I ain’t your “buddy” mate. :)

Want my facebook Pikey? My 2 xboxes and PS3 are in plain view on my profile…. I’ll even write ” For the gypsy” on my Wall so you knew it was me…

  18. ncaissie:

Lol sorry con. It’s more like 35 million replacements.

  19. kev:

ncaisie – uh, hey ….the consoles themselves are not replaced when they’re sent in due to the RROD.

Those repaired consoles aren’t counted in the sales tally as they are not sales.

i’m embarrassed for you that you didn’t know this. I wonder why none of you ps3 fanboys claimed most of the ps2 sales were replacements when they had several quality issues with ps2′s early generations.

hypocrite much? bah..of course you do… sony fans tend to do that. :)

  20. kev:

Captbirdman – uh..hey genius…MS extended the warranty from the initial 3 year. You can still get it fixed even “out of warranty”. I know b/c i did.

maybe you shouldn’t talk about 360 stuff when you don’t know much about it,sport. ;)

  21. kev:

    for the ps3 fans:

    1. every sale has tracking data. One of them is serial numbers.

    2. no new serial numbers are given at the repair factory.

    3. you are given the same console with new internal hardware.

    4. Repairs are not new sales, never have been, and would be illegal to report them as such and very easily detected.

CON – PS3 fans are haters who can’t accept the fact the 360 is still #2 and the ps3 is still dead last. they have proven time and again they are irratiounal, illogical, ignorant and stubborn. don’t waste your time. You can’t debate the ignorant.

  22. CaptBirdman:

“CON – PS3 fans are haters who can’t accept the fact the 360 is still #2 and the ps3 is still dead last. ”

You brag about 2nd place? That’s sad. 2nd place is the first loser, and if you ain’t 1st– You’re last.

“Captbirdman – uh..hey genius…MS extended the warranty from the initial 3 year. You can still get it fixed even “out of warranty”. I know b/c i did.”

Honestly didn’t know that. (For future reference, can I have a link that confirms this?)

I’m sure I know more than you. Generally.

  23. phranctoast:

I wonder what the people did for the nine months that their launch 360 RROD on them and MS had not yet extended the warranty to three years?

hmmmm……they probably bought a new one.

So yes..that would over inflate the actual sales number.

  24. ToshithegreaT:

    @Phranc

IIRC didnt MS refunded all those people who had to pay for repairs or replace their 360′s

  25. ToshithegreaT:

“Microsoft has pledged to extend the warranties to three years from date of purchase for those who suffer from RROD, and will reimburse those who already paid to have it fixed. Seeing as how the 360 hasn’t even been out for two years, that means everyone is covered. This is after they already extended the warranty from a puny 90 days to the more reasonable one year warranty that consoles are still covered under, unless they specifically suffer from the Red Ring of Death (marked by three blinking red lights)”

    http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/05/microsoft-expands-xbox-360-warranty-for-red-ring-sufferers/

Maybe not to those who purchased a new one, but then i dont think many people bought a new one.. 360 at that time was abt 399$ for the pro model..

its interesting to see that in the last 5 years 360 pro model went from 399$ to 299$ while the core version started at 299$ and right now its at 199$ while ps3 went from 599$ to 299$ in the last four years

  26. CON:

Please tell me you really don’t believe that!

Every single item sold has a 1 year warranty,

Unless you bought a second hand console made in the first 2 years you will never need to pay to have it replaced.

and warranty replacements do not count towards sales.

  31. CaptBirdman:

“Unless you bought a second hand console made in the first 2 years you will never need to pay to have it replaced.”

Actually, this isn’t true mate. My 1st 360 was a used 20 gig model from the gamestop that I worked at the time. It RRd on me about 5 months later, and I got a new(er?) one from M$ for free with a 1 month sub to Gold. Still have that box today.

CON- Regardless of what you say, Pikey boys are Irish. Not half Brits. Do some research.

Oh wait. You’re a Pike– you can’t do research. Suck a potato, you fucking leprechaun

  32. ncaissie:

    @keV

I was talking about the people that purchased new ones instead of sending them in or after the third year stupid.
I feel sorry for you dumb ass.
And you’re a POS who makes fun of people in wheelchairs.

  33. CON:

    Pikeys are fucking english lol

  34. CaptBirdman:

No they aren’t you nutter. We call some english Pikes to degrade them. Pikes are, and have always been Irish.

Shakespeare even called those wankers Pikes….

Not all Irish are Pikes, but all Pikes are Irish :)

  35. kev:

    captbirdman-
You brag about 2nd place? That’s sad. 2nd place is the first loser, and if you ain’t 1st– You’re last.

the market is big enough for two consoles. The Wii and 360 seem to be it this gen.

Honestly didn’t know that. (For future reference, can I have a link that confirms this?)
    – Call 18004MYXBOX and call in a repair. They will confirm your date of purchase, tell you its out of warranty (if it is), then let you know MS is offering free repairs to include shipping. you can then either print the UPS lable yourself or they will ship you one with a box to send the console in. I was worried b/c i was out of warranty, but a friend told me to try and it worked.

I’m sure I know more than you. Generally.

not judging from your posts. You’re wrong more about the 360 than right.

“Every single item sold has a 1 year warranty”

With proof of purchase and many idiots lose their recipt in less than a month. Without POP the only way to get it replace was buying a new one.

“With proof of purchase and many idiots lose their recipt in less than a month. Without POP the only way to get it replace was buying a new one.”

Again you are “BS”, you dont need proof of purchase as far as 360 is concerned, its a KNOWN fact.. try it looser

There was a period of about nine months between, when the 1 year warranty of launch 360′s expired and MS implemented the three year extended warranty.

So yes. The people that bought launch consoles and a few months after that did not have RROD covered as their 1 year warranty expired and MS didn’t yet extend it to three years..

Of course they bought a new one.

  41. phranctoast:

@CON (yep…I’m back. I have better things to do then post on a Saturday..the day after NYE you fuckin tard)

    @Tosh.
Europe has a two year warranty. Not sure if India falls into Europe for those laws.

    -Xbox 360 released Nov 22nd 2005.
-One Year on launch 360′s Warranty expires on Nov 22nd 2006.
-July 5th 2007- MS extends Warranty.
-So from Nov 22nd 2006 to July 5th 2007 (7-1/2 months) People were left with little choice other than purchasing a new console.

    @CON
aren’t you sorry I came back? lol

  42. Roca.:

The 360 original warranty was 60, 90 or 120 days (I’m not 100% sure) and then MS was forced to make extended for 1-year (standard warranty). Then, to avoid lawsuits they created the “RRoD 3-year warranty”

    @Toshi
Yes, you do need POP for the 360 if you don’t register your console. I know ppl who have’d to pay $150 to get it replace because they could not provide any POP and their system was not registered

How will MS know if it was purchased used or new?
    idiot
