Xbox Live update brings back requested ‘boot to disc’ feature
After Microsoft disabled the ‘boot to disc’ feature with NXE, there was a bit of backlash from the Xbox community. Many gamers complained that Microsoft wanted to focus more on advertising by forcing users to view the Spotlight section first.
However, according to Major Nelson, Microsoft will be releasing an update for Xbox Live that will (re) enable ‘boot to disc’ feature. This will allow gamers to set their console to boot straight to the game. This feature can be found in the system settings.
In addition, there will also be another update shortly after to the Gamercards. According to Major Nelson, the amount of information will remain the same as the changes are purely cosmetic. The ‘gamerzone’ has been removed from the card as well.
The first update will be released tonight for the ‘boot to disc’ feature and the second update will arrive sometime tomorrow. It seems that reception has been mainly positive to the additional feature.

I was wondering why my system wouldn’t start from the disc. Honestly I could care less. What the Xbox community needs to worry about is full b/c. Instead of bitching about something that’s unimportant start complaining about things that really matter.
Until I can play everyone of my 30 original Xbox games (including the demo discs versions 6-15) I will not purchase another Xbox 360 game or any other future Xbox accessories. I paid my money to play BOTH Xbox original and 360 games on my 360. That it is the reason why I upgraded from my broken Xbox.
January 20th, 2011
I was wondering why there was a fucking update. Ridiculas….Like they couldnt just do both things at once? First I ever even heard of Boot to disc being taken off in the first place. I never used it since there were times when I wanted to play an XLBA game and booting straight to disc would just get in the way.
@TFoS
Your really whining over stupid shit the last couple days. Is it your time of the month?
January 20th, 2011
Sega dude, if the demo disks are from a magazine, then I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for that to happen
If you very keen to play them, then why not fire up the old xbox.
As for the games, I never got a first gen xbox, but my mate did, he has around 20 or so games, all of which are which work. Total fluke I guess
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_games_compatible_with_Xbox_360
Though looking at the list most do especially if you set the res to 480p and use the old stly output, matching the original xbox. .makes sense I guess
I only have 1 which I bought on ebay, Simpsons hit & run cause I loved it on PC
January 20th, 2011
I disabled the feature on my PS3. Boot to disc/autorun is off. I like leaving a game in the PS3 and I may not always want to play it as there are plenty of other available options.
It needed to come back for the 360. As Ballmer said. The 360 isn’t a gaming console.
January 20th, 2011
I’ve have had that feature off since 2006. it’s so annoying.
So the gamer card is being redesign to look more clean and sleek. It’s starting to look like the PS3 profile card. It started with the NXE and the with gamer card lol. CAD would never admit it tho.
January 20th, 2011
“Many gamers complained that Microsoft wanted to focus more on advertising by forcing users to view the Spotlight section first.”
OH NO! MicroShit wouldn’t put ads on the 360. Stop making up these lies or CAD will Hunt you down and make you play Kinect. And he will strip nude and make you play the biggest loser in the nude!

Sony has an elegant and simple layout that is not filled with useless and worthless advertisements.

LMAO – HH had the guts to say there aren’t any ads on 360.

phranc- “As Ballmer said. The 360 isn’t a gaming console”
when did Ballmer say that? I think you may have him confuse with Ken Kuturagi, the designer of the ps3, who stated, “we never once called the ps3 a games machine”.
I think it’s great the MS is listening to it’s customer base and adjusting their business model to meet their desires. It’s more evidence that MS is committed to their gamers gaming enjoyment.
not sure why sega is whining about b/c. All mine work on the 360, but I don’t have as many as you. I usually move on to the next gen when it arrives. Don’t have many ps2 games either. (thankfully, as my ps2 took another crap…..). Don’t even own a NES anymore.
I think I”m going to get mad at Ford for not making Model T parts available at retail, too….lmao….
January 20th, 2011
phranc – OOPS!!! i didn’t read the Ballmer article. Ballmer is a tool….lol. Then again, proved that long ago with his insane rants on stage.
i’m. so. embarrassed.
flame away… lol.

January 20th, 2011
@Kev
Hopefully now you will stop the whole “PS3 is not a gaming machine” rant because:
1. It’s simply not true. PS3 is alot of things but it’s first and foremost a gaming console.
2. Ballmer just recently stated that the360 isn’t a gaming console.
January 20th, 2011
I can at least give myself some props for baiting you like a prize marlin.
Like ncaissie said in the other post. Ballmer should have said “not just a gaming console.”
He’s right though. Since the days of the ps1, at least Sonys consoles haven’t been just gaming consoles, but multimedia centers.
If ballmer is a tool for anything other than his nutty stage antics it’s missing that little word “just”.
Even the last gaming console (wii) folded to the pressure and offers netflix streaming.
It’s over Johnny. It’s over.

“@TFoS
Your really whining over stupid shit the last couple days. Is it your time of the month?”
You call wanting full backward compatibility stupid shit when the entire Xbox community is “whining” over a disc startup feature just so they won’t see shiny advertisements on their Xbox? Lmao dude give me a break.
Oh I’m sorry Fahkin that I’m not fingering my ass over Gears of War, Halo ODST, and other non-original 360 games. Games had more passion during the N64-Dreamcast-Playstation-Xbox-PS2 era. These new games rarely capture my interest anymore. When you grow up you’ll understand.
Alot of the focus of modern day video games is graphics graphics graphics. Whatever happened to good single player games?? Instead developers want me to spend countless hours playing against foul mouth morons online…And I won’t accept that.
I also miss local co-operative play like in Halo: Combat Evolved. Do developers seriously think that I would rather waste my time playing online with a stranger than with my best friends in co-op mode? The new XBox shelved an audience like me out for good. Some of us actually love single player games with local (online included too) co-op play.
It would be nice if Modern Warfare 3 would have co-op play for the single player mode.
@ Godless
Lol did you not read the end part of my paragraph? Keyword it’s broooooooken lol. Everytime I turn it on it growls like a werewolf. Maybe I’ll send it in to get repaired someday but I thought the 360 would take it’s place.
Instead the 360 is like a step sister to the original Xbox. No family connections whatsoever….:D
January 20th, 2011
The point I’m trying to make is that Sony gave it’s users full backward compatibility with it’s 60gb SKU. Why couldn’t Microsoft do the same? Not everyone wants to play Xbox 360 games all of the time. In total I still have more Xbox/Xbox 360 games than my PS3 games….but only by a few.
When I buy a pair of pants I always expect it to have pockets because their PANTS! That’s what pants do. They have pockets and they clothed my hairy legs. Same with an Xbox…I expect it to play Xbox games. Regardless of the edition of the Xbox so long as it has the Xbox insignia I expect for it to play all Xbox games.

My dark elf has a mackiga of 6,172 (it used to be 25,000 before my ps3 crashed), health of 1,260, fatigue of 5,439, strength of 3,023 (which equals 15,115 lbs of carrying weight), willpower of 1,467 9I’m currently increasing to 5,000), Endurance of 430, and all major skills at 100. So far I’ve completed 162 quests. My dark elf has a fame of 135 and an infamy of 70.
Soon my dark elf will be unstoppable as he once was before.

Bad New Rhino. .Sorry
Did I not read somewhere here, that the PS3 has a unique identity on PSN and that if it is used online it can be traced?
I guess if it is reported as stolen, though I’m not sure who exactly you would tell, then I guess there’s a small chance you might get it back.
Especially if Sony do an update that is required to play any new games, or if some poor sucker buys it unaware that it’s stolen and plugs it in to PSN right away.
Anyways. .I hope you get it back and the that arsehole that stole it losses his Balls on a barbed wire fence
January 21st, 2011
No rhino, you haven’t signed in for 25 hours. Presumably when you were last on it yourself. Did you have it set up for automatic sign-in for PSN?
January 21st, 2011
@Godless, thanks mate.
@Dan, 25 hours ago sounds about right. Yeah I had it set up for automatic sign-in.
I’ve spoken to Sony who have put a hold on my PSN account till further notice, and I’ve also changed my password as suggested by Roca.
So all that’s left to do now is deal with the insurance company.
When my 6 year old asked if we could play Lego Batman, I had to explain to him that someone broke into our house and stole it. He was more pissed of than I was LOL.

When you activate your PS3 Sony records the MAC address or serial number.

Rhino – dude that completely blows. As much as i hate ps3 fanboys i feel bad for him…..
CON – that score can’t be right. For years ALL the ps3 fanboys here were swearing how it would be the perfect sim and a AAA exclusive….
84 isn’t even close to AAA status and “perfect sim” is one term you DON’T hear about GT5.
Did you see that Forza 2, GT5′s competitor, is at 91? pretty cool. Great game. Should be 95, imo.
Roca – Crackdown doesn’t have the years of success and “car knowledge” that GT5 has, nor was it hyped with all the bs you clowns did with GT5. deal with it; GT5 is a failure.
January 21st, 2011
lol @ the GT5 card.
Only card these losers feel they can play without getting owned this way and that.
January 21st, 2011
In other news. They left Rhino’s 360 alone. The thief took a look and next years exclusives and laughed.
seriously though. That sucks Rhino. Sony has worked with the police before. They can track the DNP ( I think)
January 21st, 2011
pointless update. I never used the option much less even noticed it was gone. I prefer to go to the dashboard first as I like looking at all the content/Deals/Videos and tips on the dashboard. The 360 dashboard is so appealing and interactive why would someone not like that.
January 21st, 2011
Rhino,
They should be able to find your consile if the person signs in online. They should be able to link the MAC address to the IP address, I think.
CAD,
Wasn’t your 360 stolen a while back? What ever happended with that?
January 21st, 2011
CAD – “I like looking at all the content/Deals/Videos and tips on the dashboard”

People are so foolish. It’s like one push up on your control stick and your at the game. Funny thing is I read so many comment that said people never noticed the feature was missing including myself. The only thing I remember people harping about is when they removed Automatic Download of Arcade titles and they never put that back. I missed it a first but I prefer it now. It leads to less Hard Drive clean up.

“22 year old Jeremiah Gilliam of the Bronx has been busted for close to 200 car larcenies and a few burglaries. With the bust came a whole boat load of stolen property. “We recovered so much, I just didn’t know where to start,” said Rick Deer, a Pelham Police Detective.
GPSs, laptops, cell phones, etc, were all recovered, but it was an Xbox 360 that aided police in the bust. Back on November 11th, Gilliam stole an Xbox 360, decided to hook it up to the internet, and play on Xbox live. I’m going to guess he stole it to play Modern Warfare 2, which came out a day before the theft of the Xbox.
This ended up leading police right to Mr Gilliam. With the help of Microsoft and Gilliam’s Internet provider, Police were able to obtain a warrant and search Gilliam’s residence. As stated, Police found a bunch of stolen property in the room Gilliam’s had in the apartment he shares with his mother.
Police said that Gilliam was charged with felony grand larceny in the theft of a credit card. Gilliam was already on parole and had himself a prior record of drug arrests and convictions. I think it’s safe to say that Jeremiah Gilliam will be switching to PS3 after this.”

“Despite the introduction of a few value added iterations of the PlayStation 3, the system remains the highest priced console of the current generation. As a relatively pricey entertainment investment, having your PS3 stolen can be an incredibly aggravating experience. But through the miracle of IP tracking, PlayStation theft may soon be a thing of the past—at least in the case of one Cleveland Metropolitan area theft.
According to The Salisbury Post, a woman bought a used PS3 from a Cleveland area 3-D Games retailer for her new fiancée, Dustin Waller. After receiving his used PS3, Waller unknowingly signed into the previous owner’s account and began downloading content from the PlayStation Network store. Little did he know, however, that the system was, in fact, stolen and that police investigators were actively tracking his IP. According to the report, police investigators obtained a search warrant in order to gain access to Waller’s records with his internet provider, BellSouth.
Soon thereafter, investigators arrived at Waller’s residence and confiscated the stolen console. Fortunately, after providing his testimony and proof of purchase, Waller was not charged with the possession of the stolen hardware. Investigators told The Salisbury Post that the console was one of many items stolen by a suspect connected to a string of burglaries in the Cleveland area.
In light of the PS3 being confiscated by the police, 3-D Games issued Waller an Xbox 360. An offer which Waller told The Salisbury Post he is “appreciative of, but notes isn’t nearly as expensive or sophisticated as the PlayStation.”

lol. now *that* is a shining example of the ps3 fanboy mindset.
expensive is NOT a good thing in this industry when games are already at their highest prices in history.
any loser who finds “sophistication” in a toy needs serious mental help.
Then again, one read of Gamerblorge’s resident ps3 fanboys could tell anyone this….

Are clothes “toys”?
are movies “toys”?
January 21st, 2011
Roca – that’s my point, genius..LMAO.
yes, the ps3 is a toy. you play WITH it. As a pc is when you play WITH it.
I realize you young ps3 fanboys like to think you invented videogaming and can categorize it how you want, but consoles have always been toys, since the first home console.
phranc – you don’t play WITH clothes unless you’re using them to play dress up in that instance they can be considered toys.
you don’t play WITH movies, you play movies. Funny you don’t know this after being soaked for $600 for a bluray player you can buy for $200 nowadays…
this is why they’re at Toys R Us still….
January 21st, 2011
I dont consider video games systems to be “toys”.
The definition of toy:
“an object, often a small representation of something familiar, as an animal or person, for children or others to play with; plaything.”
Calling current video game systems “toys” is just taking a shot at undermining their capabilities.
Today they are at the forefront of digital entertainment for many people. With everything that the PS3 and 360 are capable of many people use them as the heart of their media center.
January 21st, 2011
Fahkinsupah – thank you for proving my point.
a plaything is something you play with. The ps3 is something you play with; a toy.
it’s not an insult by any means. Consoles have been my favorite toys growing up.
I do agree they are growing, but are still identified a gaming consoles. Until they are known as set top boxes or something else, they’re still in the toy category to most.
I realize the ps3 fanboys like to think the ps3 is the wonder-hub to justify the insanely high price of the ps3, but at it’s heart it’s still built on playing, hence PLAY station… plaything….
January 21st, 2011
“that’s my point, genius..LMAO”
so you mean the PS3 is a good as a PC…I’m glad you finally admit it

lmao, I forgot how creepy Bioshock can be. I know I started it up again weeks ago but I put it on hold so I can play Majin and the forsaken kingdom. I just finished up Majin the other day so now I went back to Bioshock yesterday. The setting in Bioshock is just set so well lol. Definately one of the creepiest games i’ve ever played
Anyway, as I mentioned before, I am playing it on Hard so I can get the Brass Balls achievement (As well as like 4 more I missed.) and I just fought my first Big Daddy, which is the Bouncer you have to fight if you want to get the second little sister. OMG was that tough lol. I died once, and then lucky for me I found an environmental exploit lol. There is a low counter in the room and you can just jump over it when the bouncer runs after you, and then just keep doing that lol. OMG what a tough battle lol.
Also to anyone who likes to get easy Achievements/Trophies check out Majin and the forsaken kingdom. The game is not that difficult and you can get 100% in about 15-20 hours. Took me 18.
January 21st, 2011
Isn’t it funny how a couple of generations ago we ‘expected’ direct boot and these days we expect some kind of systemOS boot.
Not saying either way is better, just thinking back to when I would’ve been annoyed if a PS2 game failed to boot once in a while and loaded the PS2 OS.
How we’ve changed
January 21st, 2011
@SW
It’s not us that’s changed, its the systems. We’ve only adapted to that change.
Also it happened this gen. Last Gen everything was still direct boot.
What happened is that now our systems are capable of so much more than just playing games like last gen PS2/Xbox was.
Now given the enhanced range of functionality it just makes sense to disable auto-boot.
To me it makes no sense why anyone would bitch about systems not having that function.
What if I have Bioshock in my system now (Which i do) but I dont feel like playing that and want to play an XBLA game instead? Auto boot would just make that complicated.
January 21st, 2011
Roca – sorry, sport, i never said a ps3 was as good as pc. it’s better than a pc for gaming. But then you’re paraphrasing over your IQ level and talking out of context again…
ncaissie – website inventory isn’t the same as a brick and mortor. It’s hilarious you had to search so hard.
regardless if they sell odds and ends doesn’t detract from the fact ps3 is a toy.
Sony and MS both are selling a game console that does so much more. Not a box that does so much but also plays games. Hene the PLAYstation. Not MULTIMEDIAstation.
get a grip..lmao.
As long as the sucess of a console depends on the games that are PLAYED, it’s still an electronic toy.
i understand your stubborness, i wouldn’t want to admit I paid $600 for a toy either. It sounds better when you say you spendt $600 on a mutli media hub….lol.
January 21st, 2011
ncaissie – why did you duck my question about which town you saw a large selection of home electronic in a Toys r us…
January 21st, 2011
PC’s are better for gaming yet the conversation is relative.
They perform much better and graphically are better than anything you can imagine on consoles.
consoles are convienent cuz you can use your tv and couch. PC gaming surpasses console gaming in every technical way possible.
I prefer console to PC for the couch tv aspect, but anyone should know. You really cant compare
