Killzone 3 open beta announced – comes with ‘exclusive’ early map

January 22, 2011

Killzone 3 open beta announced – comes with ‘exclusive’ early map Killzone 3 is set to launch near the end of February and Sony is planning on giving all gamers a taste of the multiplayer mode for free. It’s rare to see a publisher hold a “beta” so close to the launch of the game.

However, according to the official PlayStation Blog, Killzone 3 open beta will be available for download February 2nd to all PS3 owners. The beta will run till Feb. 14 and will come with an exclusive early access to the MO05 ‘Frozen Dam’ multiplayer map from Killzone 3.

Not only will the beta include an exclusive map that wasn’t in the previous beta, gamers will have to all three online modes: Guerrilla Warfare, Warzone and Operations, along with the offline multiplayer mode, Botzone. This announcement is starting to sound more like a feature offering then a beta program.

Here are the details of the beta:

“Frozen Dam” is a sprawling asymmetrical map set in an old dam facility, the playing field in MP05 has been carefully tailored to fit each of the multiplayer modes. Here are the four multiplayer modes included with the Open Beta:

Guerrilla Warfare (16 players)
Guerrilla Warfare is a standalone multiplayer mode similar to classic Team Deathmatch: You and your teammates must try to kill as many of the opposing team as you can before the timer runs out. In this mode, only the downstream monitor houses and repair bay are accessible, giving the map a very frantic pace.

Warzone (24 players)
If you’ve played Killzone 2, you may already be familiar with Warzone. It’s a round-based multiplayer campaign that consists of five randomly ordered mini-missions. In this mode, the power house and penstocks directly under the dam are accessible as well, so there’s more room to come up with different strategies and approaches to your goal.

Operations (16 players)
Operations is a new multiplayer campaign which aims to deliver a more cinematic, story-based gameplay experience, similar to that of Killzone 3?s single-player mode. It consists of a sequence of linear mini-missions, in which the ISA must try to secure the docks and destroy the dam, while the Helghast must try to protect the dam facility.

Botzone (one player and up to 15 bots)
Botzone is an offline multiplayer mode ideal for those looking to get to grips with the controls, the weapons or the map layout before going up against live players. Each of the aforementioned multiplayer modes can be played offline, against CPU-controlled opponents.

Check out the trailer below for another new map reveal ‘Bilgarsk Boulevard’:

As confirmed by Jush Push Start, Killzone 3 is said to be the largest PS3 game ever, clocking in at a whopping 41.5GB. Just to put things into perspective, Killzone 2 was 12GB.

This is super cool. I can not wait to check it out.

  2. Roca.:

“Killzone 3 is 41.5 GB making it just a little bit over XIII making it the largest current Playstation 3 title. This is quite a shock considering the last game in the series Killzone 2 clocked in with a respectable 12 GB!

With this news though, I’m sure you have to be wondering if there’s a data install. I mean most largest games have one, and you want something this nice to run perfectly right? Well we are happy to announce that Killzone 3 officially has NO data install and runs perfectly!”

    41.5GB = 7 360 DVDs

    Check this out guys.

  4. CAD:

On to bigger news. Crysis Multiplayer Demo and the Bulletstorm Demo will be on the 360 on Tuesday. That’s just nuts to have both on the same day but dame will next week be full of fun.

  5. CAD:

    Roca

Does everything you say have to have some kind of 360 bias in there. We all know that the same game could probably fit on 2 disk because the PS3 can’t handle compression and there is also the option to install which will not take days to do like it would on a PS3. In any case I would be pissed if I was a PSN Plus member. You pay and get no reward for it besides some $5 games that you don’t really own. Sad!

  6. ncaissie:

CAD shut the fuck up you mental case. You have no idea what you are talking about. We get a fuck of a lot more than live offers. Sony doesn’t make us pay for the privilege of using something we already pay for. Try harder next time moron.

  7. Roca.:

    CAD – “PS3 can’t handle compression”

nothing needs to be compressed (lower quality) when you have a Bluray drive.

CAD – “also the option to install which will not take days to do like it would on a PS3″

Killzone 3 officially has NO data install and runs perfectly!

CAD – “In any case I would be pissed if I was a PSN Plus member. You pay and get no reward for it”

We get more than what you xbots get with XBL Gold, which is basically just online play and other non-important and non-gaming features.

CAD – “On to bigger news. Crysis Multiplayer Demo and the Bulletstorm Demo will be on the 360 on Tuesday”

lmao – getting excited about a demos..that’s what the lack of exclusives will do to you. How about having ME2 & LBP2….and then Killzone 3 and Bulletstorm on the same day

  8. Rhino:

LOL Cad, thanks mate, just when I’m sitting here fielding pretty fucking pissed off about the loss of my PS3, you play the PSN Plus Card.

Just cause your bitter and twisted about having to pay to play online, then having ads on your menu structure, you also get the privilege of paying for other things Iike movie streaming, foxtel etc.

And in the meantime, we PSN & PSN + subscribers get to pay to play for free, free games, we don’t have to pay extra to get a movie service.

So next time your in the pharmaceutical isle of your local shopping centre looking for cream to ease the pain of being butt fucked over and over and over again by MS, drop by the utensils isle and buy yourself some tongs to help pull your head out of your ass.

    @Roca

Yeah granted, not going to debate if it takes up this amount as it likely does. No need to compress when you have 50GB of space on the disk! Also why compress when you have that amount of space to work with? Also note that a good chunk of that extra data is to the 3D coding that was not present in KZ2.

    @CAD
Say what you will about Roca CAD, at least he lives somewhere close to earth! You have no fucking clue what you are talking about! What the fuck does PSN Plus have to do with the context of Roca’s post? PSN gives you way more value then the mandatory price you must pay just to play games on the 360. It’s free to play games on PSN, Plus is a choice! Seriously CAD that was fucking weak, EVEN FOR YOU! Loser……LOL!

  10. Kushy:

Sorry a little drunk, you can play games on 360 for free, but not online. Just wanted to make that clear for fucktard CAD, I know everyone else will know what I meant! :P

  11. twilight:

Speaking of Bulletstorm, I am very much looking forward to this game. The early feedback for this game has been positive so far.

  12. ncaissie:

I love the full game 60 minute demos we get.
How many do you get in live?

  13. kev:

sounds like fun for the PSN players online players.

hopefully they can get their online game hours up per capita. PSN is used least for online gaming compared to the 360. Hopefully KZ3 can up the numbers a bit.

I have to be skeptical simply b/c the ps3 controller wasn’t designed for fps as the 360′s controller has been. PSN may someday have a blockbuster online to challenge the gaming hours of Halo, Gears of War, Forza, COD, etc, etc…but i doubt it will be a fps.

GT5 had a chance with the promises made by the developer for the last 5 years, but alas, it even failed to garner any increased PSN useage or set any PSN online records, as proven by Sony’s silence.

KZ3 will continue the tradition of nice graphics but their history of “meh” gameplay (Killzone, Shellshock Vietnam, Killzone 2 bugs and problems), but will do so in 1080p. They just can’t get the gameplay down. Never will with the sluggish controls. It’s sad they try to call it “weighty controls”…wtf is “weighty”…? . I guess your weapons are 80 lbs each…. “weighty” = slow= Not fun for online shooters….

  14. PS3 RULEZ890:

No Kev it means more realistic and challanging gameplay that already set to wipe the floor with the 360.

plus you only hate the DualShock 3 Controller because it actully works and is not loaded with hardware faults that you find in the 360 controller.

  15. PS3 RULEZ890:

nearly forgot Kev that you 360 fanboys keep on saying that the PS3 can’t do GREAT GRAPHICS and that the CELL processor and Blu-Ray are crappy gameplay hardware that’s to hard to make games for well look who talking now.

  16. ncaissie:

Did anyone watch my video link? They put a KZ3 mini game in Home. You can get a jetpack in it also. It looks sweet.

  17. Roca.:

“PSN may someday have a blockbuster online to challenge the gaming hours of Halo, Gears of War, Forza, COD”

Halo – Killzone, Resistance, Warhawk, MAG and even Socom supports more players than Halo

    Gears – 4 or 8 players online….meh

Forza – GT5p, Motorstorm, Modnation and GT5 support more players online than Forza.

We can all say that PSN has no match when it comes to online gaming… no only it’s able to support the most amount of players for online gaming but also do it lag free.

  18. Roca.:

“Did anyone watch my video link?”

    I saw it…it looks great :)

  19. ncaissie:

I’ll check it out and let you know. lol

  20. twilight:

I watched your link Ncaissie. It is good that Sony is putting this in home.

  21. kev:

Roca – more players online isn’t necessarily a good thing other than a bragging point. With Halo online it’s necessary to use communication and coordination when working with 8 vs. 8. When you include all the vehicles included the maps can get pretty busy, so teamwork is key.

This has to suck for ps3 players online as while they may have “more players” (not always easy to find full games tho from what i’ve seen), they have less communication as the ps3 didn’t ship with a voice communicator. This makes coordination and communication, key elements in team based games, almost impossible on the ps3.

prolly why the ps3 is used the least of all consoles for online gaming. If more was better, they would be #1 instead of dead last in online gaming stats.

The Forza series has so many more features online that GT5 doesn’t have and is prolly the reason Gt5 isn’t played online much and could account for the low sales compared to other GT games…

PSN isn’t really lag free. The internet is full of complaints of being dropped from games, unable to connect and full servers preventing gamers from playing. Then again, a buggy service is what you can expect for free….

  22. Roca.:

    that sounds alot like XBL..
    Trust me, I have a 360 and you don’t have a PS3.

  23. ncaissie:

    I don’t like more than 8 vs. 8 online.
I hated getting 30 or so people playing Quake 3. I got killed as soon as I spawned.

  24. phranctoast:

MAG supports up to 256 players and requires more coordination and strategy than any 360 game.

No problems with headset with that game.

Depending on the type of game depends on my preference on player count.

Warhawk is a game where more people is better. Same with the BF games. EA is forced to support their own games there as P2P won’t cut it.

  25. Roca.:

“Depending on the type of game depends on my preference on player count.”

    true..
when I was addicted to Socom I prefered 4v4 or 5v5 because it was easier to coordinate with just for 4 or 5 dudes. Socom is a game where if you die you don’t respawn so you have to rely on team gameplay

    BFBC2 & Warhawk are a blast with 24+ players.
