Why PS3 ‘cloud game saving’ is a ‘game changer’
Valve initially revealed that it would be implementing cloud game saves for Portal 2 on the PS3 version of the game via Steam. However, according to reports, cloud game saving may be coming to the PS3 in general sooner than you think.
This is a feature that has been hinted even before the PlayStation Plus launched on gamer survey cards sent out by Sony. It appears that this feature is closer to becoming a reality with rumors of its implementation on the next firmware update 3.60.
Apparently a developer has informed Kotaku, that Sony is informing studios that cloud game saving is coming on the next update. The feature is rumored to be available to PlayStation Plus members, probably due to the fact this requires massive persistent servers and continued maintenance.
While this feature won’t be mandatory, it will open up many possibilities for developers.
Cloud game saving essentially means that all of your game saves will be maintained on remote servers. This creates a persistent experience where if you were to sign onto your PSN account on a different PS3, you will be able to continue where you left off.
This will be handy especially for games like Street Fighter, Tekken and Gran Turismo 5, where unlocking characters and vehicles are a significant part of the experience.
In addition, developers who may create a PC and PS3 version of the game (like Dead Space or Assassin’s Creed), can also allow gamers to switch platforms for those traveling with a laptop. Centralizing PC and PS3 game saves will also aid in cross platform gaming like in Portal 2. This allows all PC and PS3 gamer stats to be filtered for progress or matchmaking.
Another use of cloud game saving will come into play with the NGP. As revealed by Hideo Kojima, he is working on an ambitious project (MGS for NGP?) where the experience can start on the PS3 and continue onto the NGP handheld seamlessly.
Sony’s message at the PlayStation Meeting is clear. The company wants to bring the PlayStation experience to as many devices as possible and cloud game saving will be a critical feature of that goal.

As someone who is onto his 3rd PS3 (2 YLoD and 1 theft) I think this is a great idea.
January 31st, 2011
sucks to be you Rhino. on another note the future of consoles would be this the home console being a handheld that you can take with you on your travels and when you get home you plug it into the hub device pick up a controller and you can start playing console games a the big screen in full 1080p HD in 3-D with kinect style motion cameras for all your home gaming needs and save your data to the cloud for cross console gaming.

well my old ps3 died back in the summer last year and had to get a new one so could play my games again and I brought FFXIII, Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope International, Toy Story 3, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Game of The Year Edition and Battlefeild Bad Company 1 and I’ve yet to complete them all.
Currently playing FFVII (I’m at the bit where I’ve got to go and recuse Areis from Shinra.Inc plus just got Meteorain for cloud yes a level 3 limit break move while I’m still in Midgar).

@PS3 RULEZ
FF7 is a great game lol. Funny how you have all those awsome current gen games but yet a game from 2 generations ago can still occupy your time and FF7 is certainly one of those games.
Recently I ended up spending a lot of time playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2x which is for Xbox but you can play it on a 360. Technically THPS2 is a 2 gen old game as well because it originally came out on PS1. But its still an awsome game, even by todays standards. Dunno how every THPS game was fucked up after that one.
January 31st, 2011
Tony Hawk Underground was the best. 3 and 4 were nice too but Underground was the best. Tony Hawk 8 was absolutely terrible. I don’t know why I purchased it for PS3…

Cloud saving is a great feature… You will never lose your saved data again.
I’ve heard this will allow cross platform play between PS3 & PSP2… I read Sony might sell PS3 games bundled with the portable version for $10-$20 more.

How long did it take you to clouds first level limit break move then? It took me around 10 hours of honest leveling up and grinding to get to limit level 3.
January 31st, 2011
What if you save your game and one day you get lots of free game time and PSN is down? I would be pissed if I couldn’t get my game. It would have to be like trophies and sync.
I love how I can play DCUO on any of my PS3s. This feature is a welcomed change for me that is for sure.

“he company wants to bring the PlayStation experience to as many devices as possible and cloud game saving will be a critical feature of that goal.”
this is sony’s problem. They’re just too confused in which way to turn for a strategy against the 360 and wii.
Sitting in last place has to panic Sony, coming from first place last gen, but they really need to focus on building their customer base, not needeless feature sets that only those online can use…..
and sony sinks farther into last place…..
I just find it hilarious that Mike Ferro, the biggest PS3 fanboy on this site, will report on ANY pro-ps3 RUMOR, but will not report on industry impacting data, like Kinnect outselling Sony’s Move by 5 to 1.
way more important than rumors of b.s that prolly won’t come…
January 31st, 2011
A game changer for the ps3?
let’s count how many we’ve had this generation, as stated by Sony and their mindless fanboys…
1. Bluray will change the way gaming is forever…..
2. The Cell will change the way gaming is forever
3. The name “playstation” will change the ps3 to #1 in the world.
every single prediction, like all sony fanboy predictiuons, failed.
The ps3 needs a “game changer”, alright…. just one that will actually change something, instead of creating B.S. headlines for the fanboys to write about….
January 31st, 2011
@PS3 Rulez
Raising the limit levels don’t take long if you know what your doing.
Some levels require you to use limit breaks a set number or time, while others require you to kill certain number of enemies.
Getting Cloud’s Omnislash from the Gold Saucer is a pain in the neck. Time Consuming…
January 31st, 2011
OH and to answer your question, I can’t remember how long it took me for these reasons below
a) I have played through FF7 at least 10 times total
and
b) its been at least 4 years since the last time I played through it
January 31st, 2011
The only one confused is you Kev.
LOL idiot. You are so fucking jealous it is sad.
I feel sorry for your ass.
January 31st, 2011
@kev
“every single prediction, like all sony fanboy predictiuons, failed.”
I see you’re still running up your mouth while ignoring me about the bet I proposed.
I call you out on your statement.
Whatever bet you want to make. I will prove without a shadow of doubt that you are wrong.
January 31st, 2011
Why are you even here kev?
Are you actually against cloud based saving?
January 31st, 2011
He is against everything the PS3 has that the 360 doesn’t. So he is against good games. LOL
January 31st, 2011
“As someone who is onto his 3rd PS3 (2 YLoD and 1 theft) I think this is a great idea.”
Er… Rhino, don’t you mean “onto his 4th PS3″ ? The above was slightly confusing…
And if PS3 implements cloud gaming on all multiplats (PS3, PC, NGP) that would be a welcome welcome welcome addition.
Now, FFS, SONY– Give me PS2 emulation and Skype damnit!
January 31st, 2011
@Kev
so let’s see……
PS3 users will get cloud based saving..
what do XBL gets you for $60/year? oh that’s right, it lets you have access to your on internet, which you’re already paying for (on a monthly basis), for basic online gaming.

Stop feeding the trolls.

@Roca
btw, I finished up Bioshock a few days ago. It was way easier to beat than I thought it would be. I only died on the final boss once lol
I ended up playing Alan Wake instead of going right to Bioshock 2.
I’m enjoying Alan Wake so far. I only have like 3 hours into it so far but its pretty interesting. Storyline seems a bit complicated, but the environments look really nice.
January 31st, 2011
The Future of Sega how about you and me team up and make our own console then? I’ll be waiting for your reply.
January 31st, 2011
I want Bioshock 1 and 2.
I want so many games my GF would kill me if I bought them.
January 31st, 2011
Bioshock is an awsome awsome game. I definately recommend it. You can get it pretty cheap too.
January 31st, 2011
I got Bioshock 2 for £4.99 in Currys :^ ) Not played it yet
I’ve just started Assassins Creed 2 and still have dragon age and Lost odyssey to do.
Also just got Borderlands. Blur, mass effect 2 not had a chance to play any of them yet.
So many games . .not enough time.
See this is where a powerful hand held would be good, cause I could play on the train, then transfer progress and continue to play on the main machine.. it’s a cool concept.
January 31st, 2011
I borrowed my brothers PSP to play Chains of the Olympus. I also commute via train. The PSP was uncomfortable to use and I could barely see the screen due to glare.
Continuing progress with a handheld is a cool concpet though.
January 31st, 2011
“See this is where a powerful hand held would be good, cause I could play on the train, then transfer progress and continue to play on the main machine.. it’s a cool concept.”
Yeah, I have 1/2 hour each way on the bus to and from work every day. currently I watch TV shows on my Ipod touch.
January 31st, 2011
“The PSP was uncomfortable to use”
I agree. You can buy a handle to make it feel more like a controller. I wanted the new PSP to be shaped like a controller.
January 31st, 2011
thats good that a handle is available. I only borrowed it though so any further investments were not happening
The PS3 needs a PSP emulator. There’s some PSP games I’d like to play with a normal controller and on a big screen.
January 31st, 2011
Godless you have just read whats been on my mind all year now. The next step forward for videogame consoles.
Now imagine your playing Fifa 2048 on your Xbox Live Mini (or whatever Microsoft call their next handheld device?) and you unlock 5 super hard achivements. now imagine you coming home and starting up your Xbox Live Hub stand, now imagine you playing Fifa 2048 on your Holographic lifewall TV continuing where you left off on the XBL Mini version with those 5 super hard achivements now transfered to the XBL Hub version now thats the future of gaming Godless and guess what sony is trying to get there first.
January 31st, 2011
@PS3RULEZ890
LOL.. Let’s be honest. Microsoft will be out of the gaming business way before 2048.
January 31st, 2011
I commute for about 2 hours each day (an hour from home to work, another hour on my way back) and I gets boring in the train, I have to read the news, or gaming articles (on my phone) to kill time.
With this internet ready PSP2 I can kill time and have fun while I’m on my way to work by owning ppl in Killzone or Call of Duty online
.
January 31st, 2011
My commute is about an hour each way too Roca.
An hour each way got me very fond of reading.
Here’s a good start

“I have tried Reading some books but I kept falling asleep.. I tried it for like a week then gave up.”
Yeah, in the morning it’s too early and after a day at work I’m too tired.
January 31st, 2011
LOL I seen a great game for the 360 today. It’s called “The biggest looser”. It is a very fitting title. LOL
January 31st, 2011
@Roca
yeah, some people can’t read in motion. Strains the eyes more than usual and makes getting sleepy easier than normal.
@PS3
Cool.. I’ll P.O.S. to my list of 360 exclusives. Sounds like a real winner. Better watch out PS3 exclusives
January 31st, 2011
“I seen a great game for the 360 today. It’s called “The biggest looser”.”
Every Kinect owner should automatically get that ‘title’
January 31st, 2011
“like Kinnect outselling Sony’s Move by 5 to 1.”
Didn’t Kinect have a marketing budget about 50 to 1 compared to Move?
Move appears more successful.
January 31st, 2011
“Every Kinect owner should automatically get that ‘title’”
Don’t worry Roca, Oprah has already started giving them away for free.
January 31st, 2011
lol I’m looking at everyone talk about their commute to and from work. I’m really cracking up over this shit.
I probably got the best commute of them all lol.
My day job is like a 10-15 minute walk from my house. I walk too and from work every day lol
Everything else I do on the side, like my writing, I do from the comfort of my own home lol.
I got it easy

January 31st, 2011
You have Netflix on your phone?
January 31st, 2011
@Roca
Haha, your so funny, but I don’t really waste my time with facebook.
I’ve written many things over the years.
A old friend of mine ran a browser game awhile ago. I used to write storyline and events for him. Then I stopped because I wasn’t properly being compensated for my time and work. Not long after I stopped writing for him the game went downhill. He decided to change things up and when he did he messed up everything. People stopped playing and within a year the game shut down.
Also I have done some work with a friend of mine who is a published author. Currently I am working closely with him to edit and rewrite an early book of his.
I also have my own website. Of course there is no way I am going to share that with everyone here. I’d rather not have a bunch of idiots all over my site. Kev might decide he wants to stalk me or something.
January 31st, 2011
Yeah but I only watch it on wi-fi.
On the bus I watch downloaded shows and movies.
I have netflix on my ipod also.
January 31st, 2011
LMAO @ Fahk

@Birdman, sorry your right mate that does make 4.
Haven’t had much sleep of late with the wife being sick, then both our 6 and 3 year olds.
The joys of being a parent LOL.
January 31st, 2011
It’s not a game changer when PSN keeps dropping connection LOL!! Good luck with that. Microsoft alreay has it’s own cloud plans so nothing new here. I already got 25GB on my Windows Phone 7 with Skydrive.
January 31st, 2011
Yes Cloud computing is just a fad.
The future lies in shovelware and remakes of old Wii games.
January 31st, 2011
I’m in the sand boat Rhino.
My wife and my 5 & 7 year olds are sick.

Glad to see CAD knows so much about psn.
So what is your psn Id cad?
January 31st, 2011
The same as kevs right? LOL
January 31st, 2011
LOL CAD I don’t know what fucking backwater in-bred toothless sister marrying hillbilly cider drinking town where you have to take a shit in the street you live in, but in the real world PSN is very reliable, AND IT’S FREE!!!!!!!
And as for you bold claim that MS already has it’s cloud plans, and Skydrive….BZZZZZZZZ wrong answer!!!!
You’re illustrious Steve Ballmer came out late last year at the London game show and dismissed it as nothing worth investigating, and Skydrive is for office files etc and isn’t available for XBox Live.
Mate, my 6 year old constructs better arguments than you LOL.
Ohhh that’s right because Sony is now looking at implementing it, MS are jumping all over themselves to keep up.
And seriously dude, can I offer a suggestion, learn to fucking spell, it’s already not alreay.
January 31st, 2011
“I already got 25GB on my Windows Phone 7 with Skydrive”
so how many GB you have on 360?
PSN users get cloud based system while the 360 get charge for nothing more than basic online gaming.
The king of the cloud is still Google, its nice to see MS playing catch up.
February 1st, 2011
“PSN users get cloud based system”
But you have to pay for it.
February 1st, 2011
“But you have to pay for it.”
We don’t know that yet.
There might me 10Meg for everyone, and for more you need to be a PSN+ subscriber.
February 1st, 2011
“But you have to pay for it”
better than paying for online play… for $60.
If anything, Could storage is a freebie for PSN+ subscriber because they’re getting all the other gaming content.
and Phranc might be right about everyone getting a smaller amount of could space.
February 1st, 2011
Online storage costs money.
Sony will use cloud storage as leverage to bring more gamers into paying for +
February 1st, 2011
“Sony will use cloud storage as leverage to bring more gamers into paying for +”
So they should. I love plus because it offers so many things. The thing I like the most is the full games 60 minute trials. It gives you a better feel for the game. It is optional and Sony does not force you to pay to be able to use 1/2 your games functionality. Actually more then 1/2 for games like COD.
February 1st, 2011
Quick question: From what level on PSN trophies does it require 1600 points instead of 400 points to get to the next one?
February 1st, 2011
About cloud gaming being tied to PSN+
I’m for it….and here’s why:
Cloud storage is NOT a neccessity, its not something you have to have, its not a basic function, whereas Gold LIVE, they tie “standard” online functions to the subscription, like cross chat, online gameplay, access to netflix etc….that last one is hilarious btw lol
Anywhoo, Sony’s PSN+ just keeps making the 360 and its Gold sub seem so stupid and a rip the only explanation that comes to mind as to why CAD the fag and his sidekick Kev, is they love the face pounding MS delivers to them on an annual basis…and they have to pay for that facepoundage…$60….
Ms ‘s: “pay us for the “priviledge” of accessing netflix” consumer; nah, iol just access it for free via pc, wii, ps3…
MS: dammit….your too smart…you must be a pcwiips3 fanboy!
February 1st, 2011
Netflix is kinda funny…
They offer a very good service but it seems like other companies surround Netflix with controversies or bullshit.
1) Between the video games consoles and the streaming access on them. PS3 and Wii are free, while Xbox requires a Gold sub. But of course Xbox had it first.
2) Movie studios that are being whiny 5 year olds about movies being released on Netflix (Redbox as well) as soon as they are released and how it cuts into the profits they make from people buying the movies. But yet you can still rent the movies on Demand as well as other places online. Plus i’ve heard that the ever failing Blockbuster somehow has a deal to rent many of these movies.
3)Now we have Comcast bitching and moaning about bandwidth that is being consumed by Netflix due to people streaming movies. My arguement to that is that people who have Comcast get 250GB a month in Bandwidth, which means that the bandwidth being consumed due to Netflix usage is ALREADY being paid for.
