Killzone 3 raises the bar – 3x more polygon

February 3, 2011

Killzone 3 raises the bar – 3x more polygon Sony recently held a PlayStation Experience event in London to reveal more about some of the games coming out this year. Guerrilla Games was on hand to drop some amazing technical facts about Killzone 3.

As reported by Now Gamer, Guerrilla Games revealed that Killzone 3 will run at 1280x720p and uses 100 percent of the Cell processor’s power. This comment could mean that the game is now exercising all of the Cell’s SPUs on the PS3.

Killzone 3 has a draw distance that is three times greater than Killzone 2. This is an amazing feat considering the fact that there is no other game out on the market that has more things going on the screen than Killzone 3.

Not only is the draw distance greater, the polygon count is also three times higher than Killzone 2. The massive amount of textures to map to each polygon explains why the Killzone 3 Blu-ray disc is jam packed with 43.8GB worth of data.

To put things in to perspective, it would require a whopping seven DVD9 discs to fit Killzone 3 on the Xbox 360 with the 6.8GB constraint.

From all counts it appears that Killzone 3 is a leap above Killzone 2 and is a technical masterpiece. With top notch voice acting and improved gameplay mechanics, Killzone 3 is looking like a must play title when it launches Feb. 22.

Erm, Kev… surely this is evil lies right? Nothing has more on screen than Halo! Tell them, Kev! Tell them it’s lies and ODST is the best looking game ever.

On a serios note, in reference to the trailer:

    Best.Graphics.Ever.

  2. Godless:

Here’s hoping the gameplay is as much of a step up as the graphics.

  3. dans303:

As of 11.00 am this morning the KZ3 MP Beta will be available for download off the PSN store.

  4. Rhino:

It might look pretty, but how does it play?

  5. axelstone:

To set Killzone 3 apart from the rest of FPS out there, in terms of art direction, its great to see that GG took the more artistic route instead of the realism route in using the full potential of the PS3.

  6. FahKinSuPah:

    Awsome graphics.

I seriously need to play through 1 and 2 sometime soon.

If I like them then 3 will definately be a must buy for me.

  7. dans303:

I just played the beta for almost 1 hour. The graphics are incredible – definately beats any other FPS. Maybe the best on console??

As for the gameplay, it does still feel clunky (FYI: I’ve been playing Black Ops non-stop all week so I may not be best to judge). But give it some time and you get used to it – just like any other game. By my final match I was pulling off a headshot here and there as I began to adjust.

Anyways, in KZ2, the controls were more noticeably heavier in the MP while you barely registered it in the SP.

The operations mode was decent and the cinematic moments were good (highlights graphics well). There’s only one map so there wasn’t much variety but that will come with the full game.

Overall, I think this will be a SP game for me: I have Black Ops for my online needs. And judging by the graphics in the MP, the graphics in the SP are going to blow you away.

  8. kev:

oldschool – i never said odst was the best looking game ever. Thanks for underscoring the inability for ps3 fanboys to tell the truth.

    on a serious note:
    1. they showed no gameplay video of all the things they said they were bringing to the kz3…..i wonder why….

    2. when a developer hypes “voice acting and improved gameplay” as THE reason to buy a game, it’s not good…. voice acting has never been a reason to hype a game…. but given Guerrilla’s history of hyping b.s. (remembering the CGI vid that was promised to be ingame graphics by guerrilla), i’m not suprised. it’s all they really have to brag about.

    3. so *now* poly count are valid reasons to brag? Forza 3′s cars have waaaaaay more polys per car model than GT5, yet somehow the PS3 fanboys claim GT5 has better car models…. So, with this “logic”, KZ3′s poly count is no reason to celebrate….

    4. With Guerrill’as history of dishonest marketing and failed promises, it’s best to wait for the final product before hyping it. Remember, the KILLZONE franchise was hyped as a “halo killer” since before it’s launch….yet, halo has been on the market for 10 years and killzone still hasn’t come close to it in gameplay, replay value, audio and online components….

there’s a reason why Mike Ferro posts articles about rumors instead of what’s actually happening in the gaming world….. ps3 fanboys need all the hope they can get right now….lmao…

all kidding aside, i’m sure it’ll be a fun game, just not the “halo killer” franchise that’s still being waited on by ps3 fanboys..

  9. phranctoast:

“i never said odst was the best looking game ever. Thanks for underscoring the inability for ps3 fanboys to tell the truth.”

No but you certainty said it was better looking than KZ2.

  10. kev:

“This is an amazing feat considering the fact that there is no other game out on the market that has more things going on the screen than Killzone 3.:

This is the problem with Mike Ferro as an “author”….

he’s basing this claim off of a non-playable, CGI, MOVIE…… not the game itself as he’s seen nothing in the gameplay that underscores his claim as there is no gameplay vid available showing more onscreen than any other game made…

This, dear readers, is how a PS3 fanboy writes an article.
    1. take developers word for everything good.
    2. ignore the lies of the developer in the past.
    3. hype things that have not been claimed by the developer
    4. repeat it so the resident ps3 fanboys will repeat the b.s…..
    5. sign it, Mike Ferro….
    6. Deny being a PS3 fanboy while writing on rumors while ignoring reality that makes the ps3 look bad..ie; poor sales, lame games, online problems, peripherel failures, low userbase, etc….

Forthe record tho; it was MIKE FERRO who claimed there will be more onscreeen than any other game in history in killzone 3…and NOT Guerrilla…..

  11. kev:

phranc – for the level sizes, the vast amounts of action on screen, character animations, particle affects, art work, lighting and mapping i do think Halo Reach is above Killzone 2. KZ2 is a good looking game, it just does faaaar less than Halo games …

ODST isn’t that far behind, and certainly not as bad as you killzone zealouts like to claim

    :

  12. phranctoast:

so how about the terms of that bet kev.

  13. phranctoast:

I think you need to actually play KZ2.

  14. phranctoast:

Please find me anything published that backs up your opinion of KZ2 vs Halo Reach.

  15. kev:

    phrance – we both know how it goes. I find it, you claim;
    1. it’s biased.
    2. doesn’t count
    3. doesn’t matter “to me”…

how many games do you see reviewed comparing themselves in aspect for aspect to other games? hint: none….

    get a grip.. lol…

ps…i have played kz2 and it just does way less than Halo Reach…. noone has ever denied this until now…lmao…

i forgot which post the bet was on…. what was the wager?

  16. kev:

better yet phranc tell me what’s in kz2 thats’ not in halo reach, but with larger sizes, more characters and more action on screen..

  17. phranctoast:

“how many games do you see reviewed comparing themselves in aspect for aspect to other games? hint: none….”

I’m sure there’s plenty considering they’re both the flagship console FPS’s.

“better yet phranc tell me what’s in kz2 thats’ not in halo reach, but with larger sizes, more characters and more action on screen..”

Like my opinion would mean anything to you, You already claimed I would discount a third party opinion.

I will say you are wrong about artwork, lighting and mapping, animation and particle effects. Also KZ2 supports more players online..go figure..

  18. kev:

    phranc –

    1. just name ONE then if there’s “plenty”..
    2. graphic effects aren’t opinions.
    3. I’d say the awards Halo has won for it’s artwork lighting and animations as part of the AIAIS Award for the very first Halo kinda underscores the idea…

more online players isn’t necessarily a good thing. MAG is bragged to hold hundreds, yet hardly anyone plays it…. prolly b/c the ps3′s online service is a joke…

it’s good for bragging rights, but for actually gaming enjoyment, PSN is severly lacking according to the data, reviews, and feedback from gamers…

  19. phranctoast:

    http://www.product-reviews.net/2010/09/19/halo-reach-xbox-360-vs-killzone-2-ps3-graphics/

Unfortunately, Killzone 2 graphics awards at the AIAS were undercut by Uncharted 2 coming out the same year, which took most of the recognition and awards for graphics in 2009.

More online players would only benefit form those ‘Oh so large Halo Maps’ 8 on 8 is a joke in that respect to 12 on 12. Bigger maps should have more people.
I don’t have MAG’s numbers in front of me, but if you say “hardly anyone plays it” you must. correct?

  20. kev:

phranc – UC2 is a good looking game…. better than Killzone 2, imo..

you don’t need more people with large maps when you have the vehicle selections and jet packs that Halo has….

it’s hard coordinating voicecom with bigger teams than 8 on 8. Being on the PSN, you’re used to gaming in silence, but with Halo online as with any combat, communication is key…..

    nice link….

  21. FahKinSuPah:

    @Kev

I own MAG and i’ve played it quite a few times. Everytime I play I see several hundred people online.

Have you played it? If not how would you know?

  22. kev:

gotta bail for a while. will check in later. peace..

  23. Roca.:

“more online players isn’t necessarily a good thing. MAG is bragged to hold hundreds, yet hardly anyone plays it”

lmao..funny how Kev makes stuff up as he goes.
MAG might not have a huge install base as other shooter but you will never have trouble getting into a match in MAG.

As for the ODST/Reach vs Killzone 2/3
man just drop the whole arguement, Halo doesn’t even come close in graphics, in fact, Halo doesn’t look as good as other multiplatform shooters out there like Crysis, Battlefield and CoD…that’s kind of sad.

  24. dans303:

“I don’t have MAG’s numbers in front of me, but if you say “hardly anyone plays it” you must. correct?”

    Ignored by kev.

“Have you played it? If not how would you know?”

    And ignored by kev.

  25. Roca.:

Kev bounced as soon as FahKin, who has actually played MAG (Kev has not) proved him wrong.

  26. phranctoast:

The Unreal Tournament 2004 (Onslaught) and UT3 (Warfare) modes all had very large maps with vehicles, and coordination on the PC and the PS3 was not difficult.

With any situation though, If you want serious play, you need to play with people that know the maps and communicate.

You should give UT3 a try. I can’t promise many players online like Halo, as the game is old and mostly a PC franchise, but you’ll at least be able to see where many ideas for Halo came from.
It’s also a lot more fast paced. Like Halo on crack.

  27. FahKinSuPah:

    @Roca

Thats not the first time Kev hit the road when I said something.

I don’t think he likes the fact that even though I prefer the Xbox 360 I stick up for the PS3 (or even Wii at times).

I’m not a fanboy, like him or you for that matter, and I will play anything that I find interesting.

MAG is a fun game, and it is easy to get into. I had really enjoyed playing it, I just wish I had more time to really get into it.

  28. Roca.:

“To put things in to perspective, it would require a whopping seven DVD9 discs to fit Killzone 3 on the Xbox 360 with the 6.8GB constraint”

    one disc per level? lmao

    Guys
Kev just posts to get reactions out of us, ignore him from now on….he really doesn’t believe what he types, I highly doubt someone can be that stupid, that my above theory must ring true…watch just ignore him and he will go away

  32. phranctoast:

who wants the soon to be new PS3 fanboy to go away…?

  33. Roca.:

    not me ;)

  34. FahKinSuPah:

    lol

Kev is too stupid for you guys to convert him into a PS3 fanboy.

I heard that Kev once met Steve Balmer and he had his sign his chest.

  35. Barnabe Jones:

Cad had him sign his ass. ;)

  38. Rhino:

@Kev “ODST isn’t that far behind”

LMFAO to use Metacritic as you like to do to make your point, KZ2 got scores of 91 with a user score of 8.3, yet ODST got 83 with a user score of 7.1.

Mate ODST is waaaaaaaaaaaaay behind, but ohh that’s right, it’s hard to see daylight when you’ve got your head up M$’s ass.

Hmn…you can clearly see what website is still under M$ payroll & under contract… and amazingly most of these American companies have an eaqually strong British staff!

  40. gunstar:

So much for their efforts to shove the Xbox brand down on gamers throats & erase 15 years of PlayStation legacy. After all the negativity & oppression the PlayStation brand have suffered from these trolls ….revenge & victory will be very very sweet for Sony PS3.

  41. Kushy:

Hmmm KZ3 only got an 8.5 on IGN and Gamespot. Not a bad score but I was expecting a little more. Well from what I read the gameplay and graphics are really good, but the story and characters are just boring and aweful. Perhaps they should have worked on those two aspects a little more!

  42. phranctoast:

“Perhaps they should have worked on those two aspects a little more!”

It has 70 minutes of cutscenes. I wonder what went wrong?

  43. ncaissie:

I played the Beta and it looks Great!
I will get the game and hope I don’t puke while playing. LOL Wish I had an option to lock the camera in the campaign. I will wait for the price to drop though. Lol
I did get Bioshock 1 yesterday. I also picked up The Transformers ROTF.

  44. ncaissie:

“Cad had him sign his ass. ”

    From the inside.

  45. Roca.:

Beta is great, I like the new unlock system and that all the classes are available for everyone.

  46. dans303:

Looks like the campaign is only 4 and a half hours:

  50. Roca.:

I haven’t read any other site complaing about short campaign….

  51. dans303:

The article is probably BS then.

  52. phranctoast:

It’s a speed run with the intent to make KZ3 look like shit. I’m sure it’s not the first playthrough.

    I beat GOW in 3:15. Doesn’t make it a 3 hour game.

  53. dans303:

    Point taken.

  54. The Future of Sega:

Orland Park 77 informed me on pns that the Kill ZOne 3 demo was out. The demo fucking sucks…I’ve played it for about 30 mins. If not mistaken the graphics look better on Kill Zone 2.

Learning from experience I know better not to fall bs hype anymore. ;) This game is only for KZ fans.

  55. ncaissie:

    Demo or mp beta?
I played the beta and it kicks ass!

  56. Roca.:

I been playing the beta nonstop… great online modes, specially operation mode.

I’ve been ranking up my field medic, hopefully my stats transfer over to the actual game
