Boy racks up over $1,470 in Xbox Live charges
A 11-year-old boy racked up over $1,470 in charges on his mother’s debit card through Xbox Live. The son apparently unknowingly purchased downloadable contents over the course of six months.
Single mother, Dawn Matthews entered in her credit card number to sign her son up for Xbox Live subscription. However, this allowed her son, Brendan to download games and add-ons via XBL that would automatically get charged to her credit card.
According to the Daily Mail, Dawn has condemned Microsoft for making it ‘too easy’ for her son to spend the money.
Dawn stated:
Brendan is 11 and knows his times tables but it was only when I explained to him that he realized how much money he had spent.
When I showed him he burst into tears. He unplugged the Xbox and said he didn’t want it anymore. I haven’t punished him because he feels bad enough and I know he won’t do it again. It is ridiculous to allow someone of his age to make payments without any checks being done.
She also believes that its Microsoft’s responsibility to put some checks in place.
When he is in gaming mode he can’t be thinking about the money. You can’t put all that responsibility on a young boy. It is impossible to monitor everything your children do. These companies should take some responsibility. They take advantage of vulnerable people.
Dawn is a single mom working two jobs trying to make ends meet to support her two children. She stated, “I work two jobs just to look after my family and pay the bills so I cannot afford all these extortionate charges.” She added, “A thousand pounds isn’t that much to people like Bill Gates, but for a single mum it is a lot of money that I don’t have.”
A Microsoft spokesperson responded by stating:
With over 30M Xbox LIVE members across the world customer complaints of this nature are extremely rare.
To accomplish this, we’ve built-in parental controls in every Xbox 360, work closely with retailers and recently launched the Play Smart, Play Safe website as an online resource for families.
This is a situation that could happen on any of the console platforms – Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3. Parents should be cautious when entering their credit card information into any video game console and make sure to enable parental controls. Companies should also probably look into making it easier for parents to set this up from the beginning.

It should be common practise to make parents set up passwords when they use credit cards and this just goes to prove that charging for online play is just plain stupid.

This is just sad. He’s eleven but doesn’t know what the word “purchase” means, or that when you make multiple ones over time (he does know his times tables after all) that you need to multiply the purchase amount by the number of purchases. Riiight.

It may well be difficult to cancel you live membership, though quiet why you’d want to do that seeing as there would be no refund anyway is a mystery.
It’s a piece of piss to remove cards from the system, just click on any thing you want to buy.
In the payment options, you can select the card and simply delete it. This will mean having to enter the full card details next time you wish to buy anything on XBL
If the kid has access to her card then what the hell can anyone do about that?

If you do it via the xbox itself, the option to remove card details is about 2 clicks after you click to buy something.
It actually couldn’t be easier unless they had a delete card details button on the controller.
Via the online option it looks outrageous, but it would be interesting to see if that the same with the online PSN account management system.

My mother in law got busted driving home after drinking. They took her license for a year and sent her to the drinking school thing. They took her license away for another year. She just got it back and had to put the breather thing in her car. She has to blow into it something like every 45 minutes and even while she is driving! That is so stupid and dangerous. When the 45 minutes is up the horn blows for 3 minutes. If she doesn’t blow in the 3 minutes the car turns off. LOL Another fucked up thing is she has to rent the machine for over $200 a month for a full year!

I think Barnabee was having the same problem too with logging into PS Home. In case you haven’t and this goes to everyone Sony has re-issued PS3 Update 3.56 so you’ll need to redownload it again. That may be the reason why it’s not working.

Ah I know what it is. You probably deleted PS Home and reinstalled it recently. What you’ll need to do is delete PS Home, re-download it, and re-install it and it should work. The same thing happened to me in early January.

I don’t have Demon Souls. I think the Kill Zone 3 demo is the safest route. That way everyone can enjoy and play the game. I would say Resistance since it features up to 40+ people but I think I’m in a minority who owns it lol.

Now I’m going to let you guys know upfront, I’m not going to pay for a club if no one is going to show up. If I buy the club I expect to see everyone’s ass in there on Saturday at 12 noon Eastern time.
You have another thing coming if you think I’m going to be left with the club bill and you guys don’t show up! Now, I need a confirmation of 16 or more people who are certain that they are going to attend this Saturday.
A minimum of 16 people is non-negotionable. Any less and the event is called off! The maximum the club will hold is 31 people. Wylie77 already informed me that he has hockey all day so he won’t be attending. Anyone else?
I need to know by Friday 6:00pm Eastern Time at the latest. If we don’t have the minimum requirements by the deadline then we’ll have to re-schedule for another time.

Yeah I’m looking at the price right now it’s $5.31 with tax included. The only catch to this is that it’s a monthly fee. The bright side is that we don’t have to pay the monthly fee but on the darkside we’ll lose the club for good.
Another thing to note I’ll have to appoint 4 worthy gamerblorge members as sub leaders in the club. Given that I’m one of the youngest members here I felt that would be out of place. But hey more power to me

Well given the fact that many will not be able to make it we’ll re-schedule the event for sometime in the near future. Possibly Mike Ferro or Dave Parrack could officially host the Gamerblorge/PS Home event since this is their site and a proper representation from Gamerblorge should come from them.
Otherwise I’ll still log on in PS Home at 12 noon Eastern Time this Saturday for those of you who can make it. Just log in and I’ll send you an invite to my place so we can chat, tell jokes, cuss, laugh, dance, fart, play games, do whatever.
