Review: PS3 Mass Effect 2 – is it really the definitive version?

Review: PS3 Mass Effect 2 – is it really the definitive version? Mass Effect 2 may seem like a distant memory for Xbox 360 and PC owners, but the game recently received an energy injection with the launch of the PS3 version. The PS3 version comes in a tidy bundle with hours of additional content on the disc not found on the previous versions, but is it enough to categorize this version as the definitive one?

Story

Once again you take control of Shepard as you are plunged right back into the Mass Effect universe. The game starts you off with some intense action leaving Shepard stranded in space left for dead. While drifting in space Shepard starts to reminisce about the events that took place during the first game.

image

This is where Mass Effect 2 differs from the Xbox 360 and PC version, as the Genesis chapter takes form as an interactive comic crafted by Dark Horse Comics.

You still get to make pivotal decisions during the flashback such as who gets to live and who has to die in Mass Effect 1. Depending on some of the decisions, your love interest will also develop during the Genesis chapter. While it’s not a full game experience like Mass Effect 1, it does do a good job in recapping the events of the first game like an entertaining story book or movie.

Suffice to say, gamers who have never played the first game will definitely get pumped for Mass Effect 2 after experiencing the Genesis chapter.

Right after the Genesis chapter, you will wake up onboard a mysterious research facility. The facility is run by Cerberus, a secret pro-human organization that asks you to join their cause to go up against a new threat, the Collectors. Human colonies are vanishing and Cerberus needs your help to get to the bottom of things. Ultimately this journey will take you to the real threat that is lurking in dark space.

The story seems to follow a similar format to the first game in that you must build a team to go up against the enemy. The bulk of the story will revolve around this task as you meet and recruit new members into your team. As you take on more NPCs into the team, more missions will become unlocked.

image

You will have to frequently talk with your teammates in order for them to open up to give you their loyalty missions. Just like in the first game, you will have the option to develop a love interest that will grow over the course of the game.

Bioware has done an excellent job of making the story much more dynamic this time around.  Unlike the first game, Mass Effect 2 forces you to make decisions when the time is right. You won’t be able to travel around completing side missions until you feel like returning to the main quest. For example, if you dilly dally by traveling around the universe completing side missions for too long, certain people may end up dying.

Bioware’s space opera is compelling with one of the best stories in the industry. The game will literally suck hours out of your day without you even realizing it.

Gameplay

The gameplay mechanics in Mass Effect 2 have been significantly improved from the first game. The combat plays much more like a shooter than a turn-based hybrid action title. Making headshots will be much more accurate and the battle menu complements your fights rather than driving it. Despite being far from being as fluid as Gears of War, Mass Effect 2 is versatile enough to satisfy both action and strategy oriented players.

There is no land vehicle to drive around this time as Bioware has learned its lesson with the all-terrain M35 Mako vehicle. The controls for the Mako were horrendous and the weakest point of the first Mass Effect game.

However, Bioware has included a new air vehicle, the Hammerhead which can be piloted as part of the Overlord DLC which is included for free on the PS3 version of the game.  There are other air vehicle sections in the Lair of the Shadow Broker, also another free DLC included on the disc.

The combat system also makes room for the powerful biotic abilities that can be executed on the fly. Depending on your class, you will be able to level up and unlock new abilities as you progress through the game. Unfortunately the variety of abilities is fairly limited across all of the characters.

The Vanguard class boasts biotic abilities that will allow you to combo attacks together. There will be different abilities to counter various enemy types. The battle menu does a good job of showing which powers are useless against the enemy you are targeting. Some will be weak against overloading while others will require concussive shots. Overall, the combat system definitely caters to fans of the third person shooter category as the pace of the fights is usually kept at break neck speeds.

Design

Mass Effect 2 makes use of Bioware’s signature dialog wheel that is extremely effective. You pick what you mean to say and Shepard will say something else along the lines. Basically this allows you to drive the direction of the conversation but leaves the exact wording up to Shepard, leaving his characteristics intact.

The dialog wheel follows a distinctive path where a conversation may branch out opening up an “investigate” option. Probing deeper into the conversation with an NPC will allow you to rack up morality points.

The first game had hundreds of weapons and armors and you had to spend some time comparing one item to another. I recall giving my strongest armor and weapons to Shepard and handing down his old equipment to the other NPCs.

image

Unlike the first Mass Effect game, the sequel strips away many of these RPG elements. You can forget about collecting loot as the weapons are fairly limited only allowing for upgrades. Armor will also be limited as there only a few options to go with, each with some pluses and minuses.

This decision ensures that you will be spending less time customizing your character’s loadout and more on the action.

The overall design of the game remains intact from the Xbox 360 and PC version, but the PS3 version does have some tweaks and significant additions. The game is running on Mass Effect 3’s beautiful game engine allowing for fancier shadows and sharper textures. The mining mini-game has been tweaked to be less monotonous and to provide instant gratification.

The PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 also includes all of the major DLCs for free: Lair of the Shadow Broker, Overlord, Kasumi: Stolen Memory, Zaeed: The Price of Revenge, and Firewalker mission pack. In addition to the mission packs and major new story arcs, there are free content for weapons and armors.

image

Lair of the Shadow Broker is one of the best DLCs released for Mass Effect 2, and PS3 owners get to play it seamlessly during the game. This new story arc is actually quite deep with new environments and characters. The Shadow Broker takes on a Dead Space like feel with some horror and suspense added into the mix. This side story arc is quite extensive and will last two to three hours.

Overlord is the other significant DLC which is included for free on the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2. During this new story arc, Shepard will take on a new villain, the Overlord and will also span a few hours. This story arc introduces a new vehicle section with the Hammerhead.

The weaker of the new story arcs are Kasumi: Stolen Memory and Zaeed. While the content Zaeed provides a new story arc to earn his loyalty, Kasumi: Stolen Memory offers a fully fleshed out story arch with new cut scenes and voice work that spans two hours. During this new story arc, you must partner with Kasumi to find some stolen implants in the underworld of Mass Effect’s blackmarket.

The addition of the major DLCs to the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 for free definitely adds to the gameplay time. In a game already clocking close to 50 plus hours, the additional story arcs introduced will add 10 to 12 hours on top.  The fact that all of these DLCs seamlessly integrate into Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 will blur the lines as to what is DLC and what is the original content.

Wrap-up

I had originally played Mass Effect 2 on the Xbox 360 earlier last year, but this playthrough on the PS3 was just as enjoyable if not more due to the seamless integration of the new story arcs. There were some niggling bugs and glitches that did cause me to restart the game once from the beginning under a new save. However, even though it can be annoying its really nothing to complain about as its all fixable with a patch.

Mass Effect 2 is definitely Bioware’s masterpiece and the studio’s best game to date. The story is engrossing; the voice acting is on point and the gameplay fun. Mass Effect 2 has all of the ingredients to make it an AAA title in its own right. However, with the addition of the major DLCs to the PS3 version and the updated engine, its hard to deny that the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 is indeed the definitive version to date.

For those who have yet to experience Mass Effect, or just want to play the DLCs ($30 to $40 worth of free content), I highly recommend all gamers to go out and pickup Mass Effect 2 for the PS3, or just download it over the PlayStation Network.

5/5

Kev will not like this. Infact I yhink he will call you a Pboy fanboy, Mike lol.

  3. lock_down:

When the 360 version is going for peanuts, I don’t know who’d buy the PS3 version at full retail price. I suppose you do get the DLC though.

  4. Godless:

I just got the 360 version for £7.99 new from play.com. .no way I’d spend £40 for the PS3 version, even with the free DLC.

It does look like it ‘s the best version of the game to get, so long as you’re not a cheapskates like me.

  5. CaptBirdman:

I can vouch– the PS3 version is overall better. It looks better and doesn’t have the ridiculous amount of glitches my 360 version has BUT there still are some annoying glitches, like voice sync problems and I remember literally walking on top of Miranda’s head.

But 360 or PS3 doesn’t matter– this is still THE action RPG of our generation. No other RPG comes close in gameplay, story and overall epic feel. It has beautiful graphics, amazing voice actors and the sense of comraderie you have with your squadmates is second to none. The action is non-stop, the difficulty is balanced and the game is streamlined enough that newbies can jump in with the veterans.

I’ve yet to play another game outside Portal and Half Life that makes me crave the sequel like Mass Effect does. When it comes to shooters, nothing beats Halo 1. When it comes to action/adventure, no game tops Uncharted 1 or 2 or 3. If it comes down to the best racing game, Burnout wins by a mile (notice I said game not sim).

But the best action RPG of all time is Mass Effect 2. KOTOR is a close second. And even it isn’t close.

  6. CaptBirdman:

comaraderie* (for my Brit and Aussie mates)

  7. Roca.:

IMO the Best Action RPG are OoT, FF12 & Demon’s Souls (no specific order)

I’ll wait until I finish ME2 before I can put it in the same category as the above games…so far its looking pretty good.

Uncharted is in a class of its own in terms of bluring the line between and Hollywood blockbuster movie and flawless gameplay.

  8. Barnabe Jones:

I pre-ordered it. It was $3 off, plus a $20 credit. Still, even at full retail it’s a good deal. Each of the DLCs were $10 I believe.

I’m loving it. Story, characters, game play – are all superb.

I guess my only minor complaint would be that they streamlined the RPG elements a little too much. It guess it makes sense to keep the pace up, but I have no real idea what weapons or armor are better than others.

What’s the best armor? The base suit with all of the upgrades? Dragon armor? Terminoius? Or the cerberus? I have no clue.

  9. CaptBirdman:

“Uncharted is in a class of its own in terms of bluring the line between and Hollywood blockbuster movie and flawless gameplay.”

    Agreed.

    @BJ

Best weapons depend on your class. If you’re an Adept or Vanguard, you shouldn’t be worrying about weapons. If you’re a Soldier (like me), you’re the only class that gets Assault Rifles. There is a ridiculously powerful Assault Rifle in the Collector ship, but as with all things in Mass Effect 2, you’ll have a choice between a few weapons, one of which is a BEASTLY Sniper. So, if you’re a Soldier, pick your poison.

As for armour, I personally didn’t touch the DLC armour through my first playthrough, because I like to see my Female Shep’s face. I’m on my 3rd playthrough (yes 3rd on PS3– I love the game) on Insanity, and I’ll say Terminus is a big help. Bad part is you can’t customize it like N7.

  10. CarlB:

Mass Effect 2 for 360 is $20 on Amazon, latest patch fixes all significant glitches… maybe another $20 for all DLC. Personally, I enjoyed this game a year ago, but have zero desire to pay another $60 today just for a virtual comic and only slightly improved graphics.

“best action RPG of all time”

I’m not going to say of “all time” because I haven’t played even half of the games that exist in this genre, but for me personally, amongst the games I’ve actually played and beaten so far, these are the top five action RPG’s that stand out in my mind the most…

    Demon’s Souls
    Diablo
    Elder Scrolls
    Fallout
    Deus Ex

I have yet to play through any of the Shin Megami Tensei series…

  11. Barnabe Jones:

I’m a solider also. I did choose the assault rifle ;)

It seems like whenever I find a new weapon, it changes the weapon for everyone. So if I find a new shot gun, everyone is carrying it automatically. I’m not sure if it defaults to the best weapon, or the newest.

I guess the base armor with all of the upgrades would be the best, based on all of the points you get applied to various stats. But again, I have no idea. It would be nice to be able to look at the numbers and compare them all.

  12. CaptBirdman:

If I had to give it an order

    Mass Effect 2
    Mass Effect 1
    KOTOR
    Bioshock
    Borderlands

Persona 4 is the best of the series, highly recommended.

But you’re incorrect Carl. PS3 ME2′s graphics are not “slightly better”. They’re significantly better. It’s almost like Mass Effect 1 vs 2 in terms of improvement.

I use Monster HDMI cables for both 360 and PS3, and my TV is 52″ and full 1080p plasma. I can connect both systems to the TV and switch back and forth to do quality tests (which I usually do for idiots that come over and say DVD and Blu Ray are the same), and for ME2– PS3 is a great improvement.

I can totally understand the qualm of spending $60 again, though. But you get so much included, and whether you think so or not, the comic is a godsend. I don’t have to play through the terrible combat of the 1st ME to get a new Shep. Admittedly, I wish they remade ME1 with ME2′s combat/cover system, but the comic is the next best thing.

  13. Roca.:

    @CarlB
I haven’t played all the Shin Megami Tensei game but Persona 3 and 4 were turn-based. Great series though (Persona series)

    @BJ
I’m using the Dragon Age armor lol. but I feel you, it hard to know which one is the best weapon and armor.

I’m a Sentinel and my native ability is a shield that shocks everone around me whenever the enemies break through it. By that time my energy bar is already filled and I can just shield myself again.

Insanity mode doesn’t seems that hard anymore ;)

  14. Roca.:

Bioshock and Borderlands are in the ‘shooter’ genre. Minor RPG elements like most games these days but they are still shooter.

  15. CaptBirdman:

    @BJ

Did you notice that when you find a new weapon, there’s usually a terminal to switch weapon loadouts? Usually it’s right in front of you, but sometimes it’s in the next room.

“slightlyI’m not sure if it defaults to the best weapon, or the newest.”

Newest. But the newest is the best–usually. I say usually because it depends on your play style. I was a Battle Rifle surgeon in Halo 2 & 3, so I liked the Battle Rifle over the (default) Automatic in ME2. But in terms of damage– it definitely switches to the better weapon.

  16. CaptBirdman:

For Bioshock & Borderlands: they still are RPGs.

  17. Godless:

On a side note. .I’m really surprised this game hasn’t sold better on the PS3, not sure what the reason for this would be, still under 150,000 sales after 2 weeks .
Likewise for LBP2 it was advertised to death over hear, with sometimes 2 adverts per commercial break for about 3 weeks before launch and it has under 700,000 in the2 weeks.
Hopefully these games will continue to sell steadily and make up the numbers.

I also excepted more from Deadspace 2. .361,000 on xbox with 295,000 on the PS3. .this game has ad a good build up and should have sold more

Maybe it’s because it’s so soon after Christmas and everyone is skint.

  18. CaptBirdman:

Godless that seemed like a thinly veiled shot at PS3, but I’ll let it slide.

Considering it’s a year old game, for $65.85, on a console with a ridiculous amount of exclusive games– I’d say 150K is a great amount, especially in 2 weeks

  19. Roca.:

    @Godless
4 quality games in a matter of 15 days will do that.
    *DCUO
    *LB2 & ME2 (same day)
    *Dead Space 2

also, many PS3 owners have played ME2 on PC/360 (like oldschool, CarlB, Jofa, SW, jojo & Birdman).

ME2 didn’t sell as good as other games on 360 (Uncharted 2 and GOW3 sold better). It ranked 10th in sales last year (on 360) in NA and well below that worldwide.

  20. Roca.:

“For Bioshock & Borderlands: they still are RPGs”

    Dead Space 2, Ratchet & Clank, GT5, and BF2 ;)

  21. Roca.:

    Edited (pressed submit too soon)

if you consider them RPG then these games have more RPG elements than both of them Dead Space 2, Ratchet & Clank 2, MAG, and BF2 ;)

  23. CaptBirdman:

    @Roca

Correct. ME2 didn’t sell well on 360 either, which was one of the reasons it was ported. EA wanted more money from the series, and the extra $9,877,500 in 2 weeks in turn is funding the production of Mass Effect 3. This was a sound plan, if you ask me

  24. Roca.:

    @Birdman

Exactly..Godless was just trying to troll with the usual xbot arguement.. PS3 games don’t sell lol

  25. CaptBirdman:

“if you consider them RPG then these games have more RPG elements than both of them Dead Space 2, Ratchet & Clank 2, MAG, and BF2 ”

    *ringing*

“Hello? Who? Oh, OK hold on.”

    *shouts*

“Roca? Roca? Demon’s Souls is on the phone for you”

  26. Roca.:

Demon’s Souls is on my gameshelf, along with all my games :)

    I didn’t know Demon’s Souls is a shooter..hmm..like Borderlands and Bioshock

  27. CaptBirdman:

No I meant the core elements of what an RPG is.

    Did you know:

Superstar mode in Madden is an RPG?
My Player mode in NBA 2K is an RPG?
Champion mode in Fight Night is an RPG?

    These are sports games.

Shooter or not, RPG is a fluid term now. Dragons and magic now are classmates to guns and boxing gloves. Just how it is.

  28. Roca.:

Sorry but Dead Space 2 is and Ratchet & Clank have more RPG elements than those games.

are they RPG in your book?

  29. CaptBirdman:

    “than those games.”

    Which ones?

“Sorry but Dead Space 2 is and Ratchet & Clank have more RPG elements than those games.

Sorry but Mass Effect 2 has more action RPG elements than Demon’s Souls.

Is DS action in your book?

And DS2 and R&C definitely do NOT have more elements of RPGs. Now you’re being silly. Bioshock & Borderlands are RPGs.

  30. twilight:

    CarlB,
Everyone knows about this. This is all the usual corporate crap.
Sony is not going to get banned in the U.S. I see your back to taking your usual shots at Sony.

  31. Roca.:

“Mass Effect 2 has more action RPG elements than Demon’s Souls”

    and more shooting ;)
Seriously, here we going again with the ME2 vs DS arguement. Demon’s Souls is an RPG whether you like or not.

“And DS2 and R&C definitely do NOT have more elements of RPGs”

Have you played them? I don’t think so
They sure do have more RPG Elements than Bioshock and Borderlands

“Seriously, here we going again with the ME2 vs DS arguement. Demon’s Souls is an RPG whether you like or not.”

Dude– calm the fuck down. You seem to always miss the point of someone’s post.

My point is that what you and I consider games usually has nothing to do with what they are. Borderlands & Bioshock are RPGs. Fact.

“Have you played them? I don’t think soThey sure do have more RPG Elements than Bioshock and Borderlands”

LMFAO. I own both (DS1) on 360, and have the demo of DS2.

    Keep assuming.

  33. CaptBirdman:

    Bioshock

  34. CaptBirdman:

I see your Wikipedia article and raise you this Wikipedia article–

“Recent RPS (role playing shooter) games include the Mass Effect series (2007 onwards), Fallout 3(2008), and Borderlands(2009). Borderlands is considered a role-playing shooter due to the heavy RPG elements within the game, such as quest-based gameplay and also its character traits and leveling system, for which its developer Gearbox software has dubbed it as a “role-playing shooter”"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_RPG#Role-playing_shooters

  35. Roca.:

    Bioshock rpg in disguise LMAO

^ Thanks for proving my point.

“Borderlands & Bioshock are RPGs. Fact.”

false fact, Wiki, critics, awards and nomitations says otherwise.

If you have both R&C: ACIT and Dead Space 2…please tell me how Bioshock is a RPG and they’re not?

  36. Roca.:

Role Playing Shooter (is that the best you got) in other words Shooter/RPG hybrid..which in other word you can say are other genres with “RPG Elements” like R&C: ACIT and Dead Space 2..

They for got to mention Bioshock in there lol and Borderlands is more of a shooter than Bioshock.

You don’t have R&C: ACIT as there are no trophies for it under your PSN ID…let me guess, you played at a friend’s house?

  37. Roca.:

“R&C: ACIT is considered a role-playing shooter/platformer due to the heavy RPG elements within the game, such as quest-based gameplay and also its character traits and leveling system”

  38. Godless:

    Guys.

You’re being a little oversensitive. I wasn’t actually having a go at the PS3. I was only convening my surprise at the sales figures, which I had thought would be much higher.

For games that have all had a big build up I would have guessed at far higher sales, in fact if you add them all together you get what I would have thought LBP2 would have got on its own.

And I include the low sales for Dead space 2 for xbox in here. .I thought this game would have sold close to a million on both consoles.

Take LBP2 less than 2% of PS3 owners have bought the game. .for such a high profile title & a game with little to no direct competition. That’s pretty low percentages wouldn’t you say?

It will be interesting to see how the upcoming games fair. .any guesses on the new kinect swimming game. .to the nearest 10…
    I’ll guess 20 LOL

There, a wee dig at xbox just to keep you happy.

  39. CaptBirdman:

    “false fact”

You’re going to have to explain that one sir.

    “Wiki….says otherwise.”

Missed my link? My Wikipedia link?

“If you have both R&C: ACIT and Dead Space 2…please tell me how Bioshock is a RPG and they’re not?”

“You don’t have R&C: ACIT as there are no trophies for it under your PSN ID…let me guess, you played at a friend’s house?”

This isn’t exactly what you said. Here’s what you said.

“Sorry but Dead Space 2 is and Ratchet & Clank have more RPG elements than those games.”

“Have you played them? I don’t think so”

    And I replied

“LMFAO. I own both (DS1) on 360, and have the demo of DS2.”

I own both– R&C on PS2, Dead Space 1 on 360 and Dead Space 2 demo on PS3.

Didn’t know they changed R&C that much that it’s heavy on the RPG, but I owned a 360 way before I was able to afford PS3, so I didn’t have many PS3 exclusives, and most multiplats I had were on 360. But

“They for got to mention Bioshock in there lol and Borderlands is more of a shooter than Bioshock.”

owns your entire argument. If you accept Wikipedia as a source, and I provided a Wikipedia link that proves Borderlands is an RPS, then you have just agreed Bioshock is also a RPS with your above statement and no further argumentation is needed.

  40. CaptBirdman:

Gods– that’s why I said “seems”.

We all know where Roca, Phranc, Oldschool, Ncaissie, and I stand on the PS3 or 360 debate.

What about you? Methinks you’re on the 360 side, and I’m sure most people here think so too, so of course when you make a comment as…controversial as the one you made, there will be folks that call you on it.

But you seem fickle to me, so that is why I’m inquiring.

  41. Roca.:

    @Birdman
did you miss my quotes? I bet you did :)
Here is what Wiki says about them when you go directly into each game’s wiki site.

-BioShock is a first-person shooter video game”
-Bioshock Genre: Sci-fi First-person shooter, action-adventure, survival horror.
-Borderlands is a science fiction first-person shooter with RPG elements

and I was talking about R&C: ACIT and Dead Space 2… I own have Patinum for both Bioshock games.

“If you accept Wikipedia as a source, and I provided a Wikipedia link that proves Borderlands is an RPS”

    LOL @ that attempt.
You’re link is pretty much breaking down sub-categories for the many genres with RPG elements.

That link is for genres breakdown and sub-genres.
If you go to the wiki page of Bioshock and Borderlands it clearly states that they are both Shooter. In FACT, it’s stated in the first sentence LMAO.

    FAIL.

Here it is in case you miss them again:
-BioShock is a first-person shooter video game”
-Bioshock Genre: Sci-fi First-person shooter, action-adventure, survival horror.
-Borderlands is a science fiction first-person shooter with RPG elements

*Shooter w/RPG Elements* even Call of Duty and GT5 have RPG elements now.

  42. CaptBirdman:

“That link is for genres breakdown and sub-genres.”

OK, I see you’re going to need an analogy.

German Shepard and Siberian Husky are both Dogs. Two different breeds of dog, but still a dog. Mix the dogs, and it is still a dog. But it still is a German Shepard and Siberian Husky.

If you don’t like that analogy, then take me. I’m Black and Asian. English & American. But I’m still a person. You could break down what I am into “sub-categories” — I’m Black? Yes. I’m Asian? Yes. I’m English? Yes. I’m American? Yes.

In short, I am all these things. Just as Bioshock and Borderlands are all the things that make them up. I can’t see how you disagree when you consider Mass Effect and Demon’s Souls “action-RPGs”. Which superceedes the other? Is RPG the sub-category or is action?

The link I provided was detailing what an Action RPG was, and in the same section, the very same sentence, Borderlands was mentioned alongside Fallout 3. Is that not an RPG?

If I could break it down further– the tangerine is in the same genus as the lemon: Citrus. They are two different species, but both are classified as Citrus fruit. Do you not consider a lemon a Citrus fruit, simply because it is a sub-category of the genus?

That is why your reasoning fails. Ken Levine considers his game a hybrid. I don’t care what you think.

  43. phranctoast:

I wouldn’t straight out call Bioshock or Borderlands RPG’s. Like Roca said, many games have RPG elements. Borderlands takes a lot of its formular due to R&C.

  44. CaptBirdman:

“I wouldn’t straight out call Bioshock or Borderlands RPG’s”

Phranc, you have a rough time accepting Uncharted is a platformer.

  46. Barnabe Jones:

    http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/02/09/miyazaki_dark_souls/

Dark Souls is expected to have about 60 hours or so play time, said Miyazaki. Demon’s Souls, in contrast, expects 30 or 40 hours.

In the area of content, the major point of increase is in enemies. Demon’s Souls had around 30 types. Dark Souls has close to 100.

Of course, they’re also readying an appropriate quantity of weapons, armor and such. There will be new magic. An example is the ability to turn yourself into objects, which could lead to coming across jars in odd places during multiplayer.

Weapons will have different motions, and some players may choose to keep using weaker weapons because they match their play style rather than switch to more powerful weapons when obtained. The weapons actually see changes in speed and recovery time depending on your character’s parameters.

There will also be weapon fortification system in place, an area that Miyzaki felt Demon’s Souls failed with. Overseas players in particular said that this area of Demon’s Souls was difficult to understand.

  47. Roca.:

Uncharted 2 a shooter with platforming elements
    Bioshock and Borderlands are FPS’s.

I guess you (intentionally) skipped my question:
“please tell me how Bioshock is a RPG and DS2 and R&C:ACIT are not?”

  48. CaptBirdman:

    Didn’t catch that. My apologies.

However, please find where I said “Bioshock is a RPG and DS2 and R&C:ACIT are not.”

I said DS2 and R&C does not have more RPG elements than Borderlands and Bioshock, if I’m not mistaken. And they don’t.

    “Uncharted 2 a shooter/platformer”

    Fix’d.

Now, “would you kindly” answer my questions?

1.The link I provided was detailing what an Action RPG was, and in the same section, the very same sentence, Borderlands was mentioned alongside Fallout 3. Is that not an RPG?

    2. Do you not consider a lemon a Citrus fruit, simply because it is a sub-category of the genus?

And “would you kindly” address this–”Ken Levine considers his game a hybrid.”

  49. Roca.:

so we can say these games are Action RPG or Hybrid RPG – MAG, R&C, DS2, Call of Duty, BC2 and many other games with “RPG Elements” like Borderlands and Bioshock.

My Wiki link for both of your game proved they are both shooters (with RPG elements of course).

ME2 is a great example of a Shooter-RPG hybrid. Bioshock and Borderlands are Shooters with some RPG Elements. Just like DS2, R&C, MAG, and many other games.

Ratchet & Clack, Dead Space 2, MAG and BC2:

  50. phranctoast:

haven’t tried Borderlands but Bioshock is a survival horror FPS if i ever saw one. I dont see its RPG element. Is it because you have to actually think?

  51. CaptBirdman:

I asked you to address my questions and point.

Won’t respond to you any further until you do so, as I believe I have checkmated you.

  52. Roca.:

Hahah you’re the one avoiding my paints that I brought since we started debating about this..

Also, as Phranc said..Bioshock has very little RPG elements. I fact ALL the games I mentioned above have more RPG elements than Bioshock.

  53. CaptBirdman:

“haven’t tried Borderlands but Bioshock is a survival horror FPS if i ever saw one. I dont see its RPG element. Is it because you have to actually think?”

    (*Attempting to be patient*)

Any game that allows you to choose how to level your character, characters, or extension of your character(s), is an RPG. In Bioshock, you can not only level the weapon and plasmids (extension of your character), but you can make a certain kind of character. You could power up your wrench hits and kill every thing melee style, or you could make a character who was a tank – using defense plasmids and some big gun improvements. Also the story allowed you to make the choice to be bad or good, or in between that also will put it in the RPG slot.

That overwhelmingly describes an RPG. True or False?

Not to mention THE BLOODY CREATOR SAID IT’S AN FPS/RPG HYBRID.

  54. Roca.:

    paints = points.

  55. CaptBirdman:

Also, on Borderlands’ Wiki page, there is a link under “Genre” that describes it as an action RPG. Gearbox called it an RPG. Irreplaceable proof.

Ratchet & Clack, Dead Space 2, MAG and BC2 DOES NOT.

    Check.

  58. Roca.:

    Bioshock & Borderlands DOES NOT.

  59. CaptBirdman:

    *referring to olds*

And I wouldn’t call Chris Tucker funny (anymore) , but he’s still a comedian.

If Gearbox and Kev Levine called their games RPGs, then there is nothing consumers can say about it. This debate was over before it began. If I create something and give it a name, no one can disagree with what I call it because it’s my creation, true or false?

  60. Roca.:

“If I create something and give it a name, no one can disagree with what I call it because it’s my creation, true or false?”

But just about everyone disagree including critis, awards, nominations, websites and even other gamers.

Everyone now days can claim their game is a RPG because just about every other game has RPG elements now days.

Flower vs Zombies is my favorite RPG ;)

  61. CaptBirdman:

You are so full of fail today it’s not funny.

“Everyone now days can claim their game is a RPG because just about every other game has RPG elements now days.”

    “Bioshock & Borderlands DOES NOT.”

    Does not compute

  62. CaptBirdman:

“But just about everyone disagree including critis, awards, nominations, websites and even other gamers.”

What in the fuck are you talking about? You mean the creators don’t know what they created, but these secondary sources DO?

“What in the fuck are you talking about? You mean the creators don’t know what they created, but these secondary sources DO?”

it’s all propaganda… You can say you’re next game is going to be mind blowing (Cough..coughg..MS, Square Enix, etc) and they still ended to be shit.

  65. oldschool1987:

I would never have called Chris Tucker a comedian anyway, American comedians are to family friendly for me. I like a comedian who will insult everyone, like Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Carr or Frankie Boyle(He’s prob about as close to the knuckle as you can get).

Borderlands is no RPG though, just has a few elements to it, it’s a ‘Loot’em Up’ That’s what the developers called it anyway.

It doesn’t mean much if the developers say it is something, the creators of the new show Terra Nova are saying it’s not a Sci-Fi, even though it’s about Time Travel and Dinosaurs. It’s still a Sci-Fi no matter what the writers say, Look it up.

I remember when Damon Lindelof said Lost was not a Sci-Fi as well.

  66. phranctoast:

That’s a very loose interpretation of want you believe an RPG is. With such a loose interprtation I’m sure you would have no problem considering every game that Roca has mentioned as an RPG too.

You know as well as I do. bioshock is an action adventure. ;)

  67. CaptBirdman:

You blokes are seriously mental today. Borderlands is RPG. Roca used Wiki to discredit that, but I used the SAME site providing it IS an RPG, and he still rejects it. That’s a fucking idiot.

And Oldy, Time Travel and Dinos, not a sci-fi series makes.

Star Wars is not Sci Fi.
    Star Trek is Sci Fi.

    Subtle difference.

  68. Roca.:

“Roca used Wiki to discredit that”

I used “common sense” first(like everyone in here, except you) and then I quote the first sentence from wiki..

If Borderlands is a RPG for the reasons you listed then (like Phranc said) all the games I mentined can be categorized as RPGs

  69. oldschool1987:

omg are you seriously saying that Star Wars is no Sci Fi? You’re going to call it a ‘Space Opera’ instead aren’t you? I’m sorry but any film, program or book that has elements of Time Travel IS A SCI-FI …even Deja Vu is a sci-fi!

BSG is a ‘Space Opera’ but it is also a Sci-Fi. I’m sorry but to call Star Wars a non sci-fi is kinda lame, I just think you like to disagree with people Capt.

Here is one definition of Sci Fi from Wikipedia:

‘A setting in outer space, on other worlds, or involving aliens[6]‘

Here is another to prove that Terra Nova is also a Sci-Fi:

‘Stories that involve discovery or application of new scientific principles, such as time travel or psionics, or new technology, such as nanotechnology, faster-than-light travel or robots, or of new and different political or social systems (e.g., a dystopia, or a situation where organized society has collapsed)’

Please just swallow your pride on this one Capt and don’t challange it, because they are all sci-fi. Stop kidding yourself lol.

It kinda makes you lose credibility about defending Borderlands as an RPG when you said Star Wars ain’t a Sci-Fi …nor Time Travel.

  70. phranctoast:

R&C is way more RPG like. You level up weapons armor and overall. You can outfit for offence or defense or both. There’s even side missions you can complete or disregard. You can also just use a wrench too. Lol.

Anyway. I think all we proved is there is no sure fire way to put many of today’s games into a single genre. Most games have many genres, some more subtle than others.

I personally wouldn’t consider Bioshock an RPG as a primary genre. Maybe one of it’s secondary.

It feels more like a survival horror genre first. Always scrounging for ammo. Each room, rather than being a shooting gallery, is a shooting puzzle so to speak. There’s a proper way to get through each room and it’s up to you to figure that out. Sounds like dead space and resident evil to me.

  71. CaptBirdman:

“If Borderlands is a RPG for the reasons you listed then (like Phranc said) all the games I mentined can be categorized as RPGs”

Phranc said he could not see the RPG in Bioshock, and I simply provided why Bioshock SPECIFICALLY IS an RPG. Take a closer look

“Any game that allows you to choose how to level your character, characters, or extension of your character(s), is an RPG. In Bioshock, you can not only level the weapon and plasmids (extension of your character), but you can make a certain kind of character. Dead Space has a wrench? Plasmids? The ability to be an offensive or defensive character?

No. So please comprehend what I say before you post. It really feels like I’m explaining the anthropic principle to lemmons.

  72. Roca.:

“Dead Space has a wrench? Plasmids? The ability to be an offensive or defensive character?”

Does Bioshock has a Plasma Gun? Stasis? The ability to use Kinesis to be an offensive and defensive character?

  73. oldschool1987:

No reply to what I said about Sci-Fi?

  74. Roca.:

“You can also just use a wrench too. Lol.”

    LMAO

  75. phranctoast:

Ok. So apparently you consider Ratchet and Clank to be an RPG minus the plasmids of course. Lol.

  76. CaptBirdman:

Hey I didn’t say Terra Nova wasn’t Sci Fi. I said Time Travel doesn’t make it science fiction. It is a staple of science fiction, but it’s inclusion does not automatically make it science fiction.

Example– The novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban features Hermione and Harry traveling through time to save Sirius Black and Buckbeak.

    Is Harry Potter Sci Fi?

“I just think you like to disagree with people Capt.”

Arsey much? Chill. But seriously, free thinkers and academics usually challenge bold claims, and not take them at face value. Besides, would you rather I just agree with everyone?

“It kinda makes you lose credibility about defending Borderlands as an RPG when you said Star Wars ain’t a Sci-Fi …nor Time Travel.”

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=Star+Wars+is+not+sci-fi&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=

    Swallow YOUR pride.

  77. CaptBirdman:

“Ok. So apparently you consider Ratchet and Clank to be an RPG minus the plasmids of course. Lol.”

“Does Bioshock has a Plasma Gun? Stasis? The ability to use Kinesis to be an offensive and defensive character?”

    You lot really are stupid.

  78. CaptBirdman:

“I personally wouldn’t consider Bioshock an RPG as a primary genre. Maybe one of it’s secondary. ”

That is fucking exactly what I’ve been saying, yet somehow you found ways to disagree. Wonder why that is….

  79. Roca.:

    “You lot really are stupid”

Sorry to hurt your feelings Birdman..but you still didn’t respond to this:

“Dead Space has a wrench? Plasmids? The ability to be an offensive or defensive character?”

“Does Bioshock has a Plasma Gun? Kinesis? The ability to use Stasis to be an offensive and defensive character?”

Since Bioshock is an RPG in your book because of what you said about…is Dead Space 2 a RPG in your book as well?

  80. CaptBirdman:

Star Wars isn’t sci-fi because it does not rely upon science, technology, or future society to tell it’s story. The settings, gadgets, costumes, etc. of the films are mere pageantry that make them look “techy” and sci-fi, but that’s not what they are about. Sci-fi is fiction about science or technology and it’s impact on people, and deals with scientific and technological concepts such that they cannot be extracted from the story without telling a different story. E.g. you can’t have “I, Robot” without robots, but you can have killer creatures that only come out in the dark without going to other planets, and you can have stories about good vs. evil, rebellion against tyranny, and traditional morality vs. draconian law without spaceships, lightsabers, and Jabba the Hut. (In fact Lucas admits Star Wars is homage to the morality epics of 50s Japanese samurai films and American westerns, and to that end Star Wars has been called space western as much as space opera; it’s about the moral drama, not the setting.)

    Explained thoroughly enough?

  81. phranctoast:

We probably all are agreeing to some degree then. You’re just being a fucking douche about it.

  82. oldschool1987:

What you seem to forget(ignore?) about Harry Potter 3 is that Time Travel is as a result of Magic, not technology. Terra Nove is about Humans using a Time Macine to travel in the past to escape extinction but end up going too far back.

And I’m sorry a few websites of people who are in denial about Star Wars is not proof, Science Fiction is defined on Wiki and one of the definitions was:

‘A setting in outer space, on other worlds, or involving aliens[6]‘

Which lets face it, IS Star Wars to a T. Why are people in denial about this?

  83. CaptBirdman:

and Roca, that’s why I called you stupid. You STILL didn’t get that that WAS the response. Let’s hope Phranc understood my post because, frankly, you have major reading comprehension issues.

So I guess calling you stupid was underhanded of me. We mustn’t tease the special kids. I’m sorry for calling you stupid.

  84. Roca.:

We are all agreeing that most games now days have RPG elements but that doesn’t make them RPGs..nuff said.

  85. oldschool1987:

    Nope, not explained thoroughly enough.

Science Fiction: A setting in outer space, on other worlds, or involving aliens.

George Lucas don’t even know what his own films are, you can’t listen to him, I mean look at the mess of Episodes 1 and 2 …3 was ok, well the last hour was.

Firefly and Serenity(by Joss Whedon) is the perfect example of Space Western but even Joss himself calls it a Sci Fi.

I can’t get over that I have to explain this. Why are people finding the tiniest little loop holes to get out of calling their beloved movies a Sci-Fi???

  86. Roca.:

    @Birdman

    -You are wrong about Bioshock
-You were wrong about Demon’s Souls
    -You were wrong about Borderland
-You are wrong about Star Wars

    who’s the special kid?

Let me know when you are ready to categorized Dead Space 2… I’m sure is a RPG just like Bioshock lol.

Phranc understood what you (very poorly) tried to said and he replied with this:
“Ok. So apparently you consider Ratchet and Clank to be an RPG minus the plasmids of course. Lol.”

Your comment was a joke (lol) so was Phranc’s reply

  87. CaptBirdman:

“We probably all are agreeing to some degree then. You’re just being a fucking douche about it.”

    enlighten me.

“What you seem to forget(ignore?) about Harry Potter 3 is that Time Travel is as a result of Magic, not technology. Terra Nove is about Humans using a Time Macine to travel in the past to escape extinction but end up going too far back.”

Un huh. But I didn’t say Terra Nova wasn’t Sci Fi. I said simply having time travel in a story doesn’t make it Sci Fi.

“And I’m sorry a few websites of people who are in denial about Star Wars is not proof”

Even the one where Lucas says it’s not Sci Fi (8th link down)?

“‘A setting in outer space, on other worlds, or involving aliens[6]‘”

Terrible definition mate. See, if it didn’t have the word “or” there, I’d have a harder time dispatching this one. This definition (because of the word “or”) can be read in it’s grammatically correct long form as

“A setting in outer space or on other worlds or involving aliens”

in which case “Apollo 13″ was science fiction.

  88. Roca.:

“Science Fiction: A setting in outer space, on other worlds, or involving aliens”

Pretty straight forward..sounds like Star Wars lol

  89. CaptBirdman:

Star Wars is fantasy. Not Sci Fi.

I’m a fantasy and Sci Fi fan, and I pride myself on being able to tell them apart.

If you take the tech away from Star Wars, it’ll still be the same story. Take the fantasy away, however, and it’s not the same. Sci Fi relies on science and technology to tell it’s story. Remove the technology from The Matrix, and the story is lost.

There is a subtle difference, but it’s there.

  90. CaptBirdman:

    http://unrealityshout.com/blogs/george-lucas-insists-star-wars-not-sci-fi

“We look at it as a different dimension. The laws of physics are different here. Star Wars is not science fiction at all. It’s much more attuned to mythology, to psychology, to history than it is to science.

It’s more of a parable about the way we are, rather than the way we’re going to be. That’s why it starts out as a fairytale – a long time ago in a galaxy far away – once upon a time.

It deals with princesses. It’s purposely designed not to be about where we’re going. It’s about where we’ve been and what we can learn from the past in the present.”

  92. CaptBirdman:

This conversation about Sci Fi is quite hilarious. I had a course in college called “genre studies” which was a part of English. We took genre studies extremely seriously (hard nosed professor). He explained why Odysseus is a comic hero, and not a tragic one–trust me, this is a great topic.

But Star Wars was a part of the course also.

I assure you, it is a fantasy.

  93. Barnabe Jones:

    OK, I’ll bite…

Is Mass Effect 2 considered scifi?

If so, what makes it different than Star Wars?

  94. CaptBirdman:

    Yes, ME2 is Sci Fi.

Sci Fi is based in reality, but uses psuedo-science to explain it’s story. It is always set in present day or the future, and without it’s psuedo-science, the story cannot progress. The name of the game is Mass Effect– which is a double entendre for the fictional power source that allows space travel, and the fact your decisions have a “mass effect” on the story.

Star Wars is set in the far past– immediately excluding it from being Sci Fi. Techno-babble and no explanation outside the movies of how propulsion works are clear indicators of fantasy, not to mention the good vs evil, light and dark wizards (jedi and sith) rebellion of facist regimes, and magic (the Force).

As an aside, Biotics and Force manipulators seem identical, but Biotic abilities are explained in the codex, whilst the Force is said to be induced by midochlorians. Midochlorians are akin to magic in Harry Potter because you have to be born with it. In Mass Effect, Biotics are born and made.

To put it simply– without technology, Shepard would be dead, and Mass Effect would cease to exist, ergo, it is Sci Fi.

Technology can be removed from Star Wars, and it’ll still be the same story (pretty much a samurai/western about the good wizard taking down the evil wizard)

  95. CaptBirdman:

An Oldschool is a clever bugger when he provided Wiki’s “definition of Sci Fi. He clearly omitted what would discredit his argument, which was the first, second and fourth sentences. Here they are:

“Science fictionis a genre of fiction dealing with the impact of imagined innovations in science or technology, often in a futuristic setting. It differs from fantasy in that, within the context of the story, its imaginary elements are largely possible within scientifically established or scientifically postulated laws of nature (though some elements in a story might still be pure imaginative speculation). Science fiction is largely based on writing rationally about alternative possibilities.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction

  96. CarlB:

“I see your back to taking your usual shots at Sony.”

Actually Twilight, I didn’t know about it, but I’m not surprised I can’t keep up with the Blorge intelligentsia. I simply posted an informative link, then you projected.

What “usual shots”? That I occasionally don’t like things about Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo products and am actually capable of being critical/inquisitive of things I also have praised? Moving on.

  97. RomasantaMC:

    @Birdman
“Star Wars isn’t sci-fi because it does not rely upon science, technology, or future society to tell it’s story.”
I completely agree with this statement, but it does have underlying aspects that use fiction technologies.

I think this is where roca’s arguement is in his deadspace2 theory( a survival horror game with rpg aspects)

But in all fairness it comes down to what the developer puts on the box that you can accurately put it in a genre. You guys could debate about what correct category it belongs in all day.

  98. oldschool1987:

So what if George Lucus said that, Damon Lindelof said that Lost ain’t a Sci-Fi, which it clearly is. Star Wars is the most Sci-Fi movie(s) I have ever seen.

And if you’re trying to get me because Apollo 13 is set in space and because of another planet, then you forget or didn’t know that the Moon is not a planet …it’s a moon. But Apollo 13 is NOT Science-Fiction, it IS however Science-Fact, surely you can tell the difference? There was no Lightsaber or Aliens. If it’s grounded in reality and is an actual documented case that involved space travel, then it is a Science Fact. Come on Capt, you thought you had me there but you clearly blew yourself out.

THERE ARE NO LOOPHOLES, STAR WARS IS A SCI-FI!!! YOU’RE IN DENIAL! WHICH LEADS TO ACCEPTANCE, THEN ANGER, THEN THE DARK SIDE …Oh wait

  99. Barnabe Jones:

I’m not sure what the official stance is on the matter, but what’s the context of the, “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away”?

I always understood it as being told to people of the future, using it as a tool to further draw the audience into the world, people, and history. At any rate, none of the tech feature in the movie exists currently, so that leaves the audience in the past.

Also to be fair, we could make the same argument of: if you were to remove the technology from ME, you’re left with the story of an epic battle with good over coming evil.

The Star Wars movies never went into great detail about the tech, but still each episode was centered around technology.

Asides from the light sabers, droids, space ships, etc, etc..

-Episode 1 – Pod racers, and midichlorians (responsible for the Force)
-Episode 2 – Droids, clones, etc
-Episode 3 – rebuilding a body through cybernetics
    -Episode 4 – Death Star
    -Episode 5 – (kinda drawing a blank)
-Episode 6 – Epic space ship battles, death star

  100. CarlB:

Remove the technology from ME? Your left with the fundamentals of storytelling that have existed since Homer. Same with Star Wars. Just because these are fantastical stories with some fantasy elements doesn’t mean they should be in the Fantasy genre instead of the Science Fiction genre.

The thing is, without the technology AND science that was integral to both of these stories, regardless of whatever fantasy elements left over, it would not be the same story. This is why they are both considered science fiction regardless because of the setting within the environment of technology and science.

With Star Wars, there would be no story because the Empire would have been radically different, and there would be no Death Star, no TIE Fighters, etc. without the science and technology. If you transplanted all the technology with fantasy, you would be left with a Lord of the Rings type of story, which is considered Fantasy because of those “magic” elements and “magical beings” dominating the story line.

Theoretically, science could be considered magic to some, just as aliens could be considered magical beings; but in practice, usually one or the other paradigm either dominates the storytelling, or is so integral to it’s plot that it determines it’s genre. Star Wars is largely based on science that explains it’s fantastical elements, and so is science fiction.

  101. CaptBirdman:

“And if you’re trying to get me because Apollo 13 is set in space and because of another planet, then you forget or didn’t know that the Moon is not a planet …it’s a moon.”

No. The fact that it took place in space. That’s why I said your definition was flawed.

“Also to be fair, we could make the same argument of: if you were to remove the technology from ME, you’re left with the story of an epic battle with good over coming evil.”

You’d be correct– if Shep didn’t need technology to exist. ME is centered around it’s technology, and it NEEDS it to be ME. SW does not need the tech. Besides, in the definition of sci-fi it clearly says

“Science fictionis a genre of fiction dealing with the impact of imagined innovations in science or technolog”

Key words– impact of imagined innovations in science and technology. Mass Effect would not function without this core element, because the main antagonists of the series– are TECHNOLOGY.

Star Wars has “tech” in it, but it is faaaaar from this definition

“It differs from fantasy in that, within the context of the story, its imaginary elements are largely possible within scientifically established or scientifically postulated laws of nature”

Midichlorians (organism, not technology), Pod racers, cybernetics, and Death Stars are not “within the context of the story, imaginary elements are largely possible within scientifically established or scientifically postulated laws of nature ” simply because the science behind it is not explained/attempted to be explain, in any context. The concepts in Star Wars largely violate laws of physics, whereas a science fiction story will not or slightly bend them. That’s the difference.

“I always understood it as being told to people of the future, using it as a tool to further draw the audience into the world, people, and history. At any rate, none of the tech feature in the movie exists currently, so that leaves the audience in the past.”

Well your understanding is inconsistent. You say you thought it was a story being told to the “people of the future”, yet, because the “tech” doesn’t currently exist, we’re in the past?

Lucas has clarified– Star Wars takes place long before “Earth Human” civilisation, and well beyond our galaxy, The Milky Way. Considering the universe is 13 billion years old, there are roughly 12,999,950,000 years before the current time in which we live, and 8,999,950,000 years before Earth was formed, which gives a healthy cushion for Star Wars to take place. And if Mass Effect should have taught you anything, it would be that humans probably aren’t the most advanced species and that there is most likely a species that has been around much longer, and in the context of Star Wars– it’d be the people from Star Wars (they are not “humans” like us, nor are they speaking English. They’re speaking “Basic”).

  102. CaptBirdman:

“Remove the technology from ME? Your left with the fundamentals of storytelling that have existed since Homer.”

That’s is incorrect. The antagonists of the series are machines. Simple as that. Strip away the technology, and Shepard would not have fought the Geth, Tali would not exist, Legion would not exist, the Protheans would never have “vanished”, Biotics would not exist, and there’d be no antagonist. Mass Effect NEEDS it’s technology to tell it’s story.

You can strip high tech technology from Star Wars, and the story can remain exactly the same. You say the Empire would be different. Not true. At the core of the Empire, it is just a conglomerate of Adolf’s Nazi Germany and Mussolini’s NFP. The “tech” had NOTHING to do with what the Empire was trying to/did accomplish in Star Wars.

Han solo is a cowboy. Leia is a princess for crying out loud. The blasters are still guns, and lightsabers are still glorified samurai swords. The death star is still a castle, and the force is still magic. Wookies are trolls and yoda is a goblin. Jedi are the good wizards and sith are the bad wizards. the spacecrafts are still horses and Star Wars is still a FANTASY.

Can’t argue against definitions, analogies and what the creator himself has said.

    Star Wars is a fantasy.

  103. CarlB:

“Key words– impact of imagined innovations in science and technology.”

Death Star and the rest of the technology used by the empire

“the main antagonists of the series– are TECHNOLOGY.”

The antagonists of science fiction do not have to be robots, they can be powerful beings that use advanced technology and still remain within the confines of science fiction.

“the science behind it is not explained/attempted to be explain, in any context. The concepts in Star Wars largely violate laws of physics”

If you’ve read the books on Star Wars, and books attempting to explain the technology behind Star Wars, there is a scientific context to their explanation. Which laws of physics, and which physics? The concepts presented are certainly possible within the realm of quantum physics.

Science fiction can also take place in the past, as time travel is not beyond the realm of science fiction, and past technological civilizations being destroyed are not either.

  104. CarlB:

“The antagonists of the series are machines.”

Within the paradigm of nanotechnology, we are all machines, albeit carbon based. Biology is a form of nanotechnology, and nature uses this technology all the time.

“You can strip high tech technology from Star Wars, and the story can remain exactly the same.”

Really? What would replace the Death Star? You say a castle? A castle that destroys the world? Change the story and it could be a science fiction castle with technology that can destroy worlds (science fiction and Dr. Doom) or a fantasy castle that can destroy worlds (fantasy and Sauron). How would the Empire get around to different planets? Horses? Maybe on a magical unicorn (again, fantasy, not science fiction).

Aliens vs. Cowboys? Science fiction. And they have cowboys and horses.

Just because an ideologie(/s) exists within a work of science fiction, and just because you can parallel fictional future technology with past forms doesn’t mean it is no longer science fiction.

Stars Wars is a fantasy that takes place in a universe mostly based upon science fiction. Therefore it is science fiction, regardless of any theoretical parallels to fantasy elements. Lord of the Rings is a fantasy that takes place in a universe largely based upon fantasy. Therefore it is fantasy, regardless of any theoretical parallels to science fiction elements.

  105. CaptBirdman:

“If you’ve read the books on Star Wars”

Most of the expanded universe is subordinate to the Films, and the vast majority of it isn’t considered canon. But for streamline’s sake–we’re referring to the Films.

“The antagonists of science fiction do not have to be robots, they can be powerful beings that use advanced technology and still remain within the confines of science fiction. ”

No one said that. But in Mass Effect, they are machines. You cannot substitute the antagonists in Mass Effect for anything organic, without fundamentally altering it’s story. You CAN substitute the technology in Star Wars for traditional fantasy items, and it remains the same story.

“Which laws of physics, and which physics? The concepts presented are certainly possible within the realm of quantum physics.”

Incredibly incorrect. Lightsabers immediately present a problem for physics. So does midichlorians and clairvoyance. Not to mention light-speed capable ships violates the Einstien’s ToR and thermodynamics.

Wake up– Star Wars is a FANTASY FILM

  106. CaptBirdman:

“Really? What would replace the Death Star? You say a castle? A castle that destroys the world? Change the story and it could be a science fiction castle with technology that can destroy worlds (science fiction and Dr. Doom) or a fantasy castle that can destroy worlds (fantasy and Sauron). How would the Empire get around to different planets? Horses? Maybe on a magical unicorn (again, fantasy, not science fiction).”

You’re failing to realise the distributive property of mathematics. In short, since we have altered the Death Star into a fortress, we must alter what the fortress’s purpose will be, with respect to the source material. In this case, the Empire is taking over the world (Galaxy), country by country (planet by planet) from it’s base of operations– a fortress (which is EXACTLY what the DS is called in the films). They get to the other countries (planets) on horses (spacecrafts), and it’s up to a young Knight (ironically– Jedi Knight) to save the princess, and ultimately the world (Galaxy). The young Knight is trained in magic (the force) by the old wise wizard (Obi-Wan), and he travels with a comrade (Han Solo) to defeat the dark wizard (Sith), using his father’s sword (saber) and magic (the force). He ultimately raids the fortress (Death Star) and destroys it.

    Story still works.

    It is fantasy.

That’s like me claiming that LOTR is a detective story. And Apollo 13 is a sci-fact, no idea how you called it a sci-fi when it happened. Fiction means non-real you know? lol

    What….Star Wars isn’t real???

    (Runs crying from room)

  113. CaptBirdman:

“The science fantasy interstellar epic Star Wars uses science and technology in its settings and storylines, although it is not considered “hard” science fiction. The series has showcased many technological concepts, both in the movies and in the “Expanded Universe” of novels and comics. The Star Wars movies are a vehicle for entertainment and their primary aim is to deliver drama, not scientific knowledge. Many of the on-screen technologies created or borrowed for the Star Warsuniverse were used mainly as plot devices or as aesthetic elements, and not as elements of the story in their own right.”

“Star Wars has laser guns!!! LASER GUNS!!! HOW IS THAT NOT SCI-FI!?”

“Star Wars makes heavy use of blaster & Ion weaponry. Characters can be seen escaping, or even dodging those bolts, and the blaster bolts themselves can be seen flying in a moderate-fast speed. Dodging a laser bolt would be nearly impossible, as it would travel at the speed of light. And due to that, the blaster fire would pass like a sparkle, and hit its target”

    Sounds in a Vacuum

“Star Wars is probably best known for its epic space dogfights. We can hear blaster and engine sound in those space scenes. Space is a vacuum, however, and since sound requires matter to propagate, the audience should not hear any sound.”

    Flight Dynamics

“The flight dynamics in space closely mirror the familiar dynamics from flying in Earth’s atmosphere. On Earth, fixed-wing aircraft must make banked turns because they use air pressure to operate. Yet, in the airless vacuum of space in Star Wars, the Millennium Falcon always banks. Physicist Lawrence M. Krauss says this is for a simple reason: “it looks good.”

    Hyperspace Travel

“The hyperspace travel in the Star Wars franchise requires two elements, Light speed travel and Hyperspace. Ships in the Star Wars Universe have engines capable of propelling them to the speed of light. But in real physics it is impossible for any physical object to attain that speed. To do so would require infinite energy, which is also impossible to generate in our universe. Even traveling at the speed of light would still take thousands of years to travel the galaxy, so the Star Wars ships use a hyperdrive. This is explained by having the ships warp to another “dimension”, presumably a brane universe with different physical laws. Gravity supposedly reaches between branes. In Star Wars, gravity in real spaces forms gravitic “mass shadows” in hyperspace. Hyperspace in Star Wars is unrelated to the presumed space between universal “bubbles” in real life physics.”

    Fantasy.

And it weren’t ‘my’ definition of Sci-Fi, it was one of many from wikipedia, common sense is also required, you seem to lack that.

As for what George Lucus said, well I’ve already said his opinion can’t count for too much because he always lied about his films, I remember before the prequals came out he said he had them all planned out from years ago, he proved he was making them up as he went along, you could tell by just watching them. The only thing that was planned was Anikan turning into a shit head, that’s it.

Just because GL said it ain’t a sci-fi does not make it so, I could write a book about a seriel killer in the 80′s and claim it’s a futuristic dance flick. Just because he wrote it does not make what he claims it to be true. Once again, Damon Lindelof and JJ Abrahms said Lost was not a Sci-Fi …Time travelling island and paralell universes? Hmm…

Don’t worry, one day you might prove that Star Wars ain’t a sci-fi, but remember: Star Wars has been in many top 10 sci-fi film awards, from magazines like Film, even FHM, I remember it in that from 3 years ago when I was in Cyprus. So all those magazines are wrong for putting Star Wars in the ‘greatest sci-fi movie’ catagory? Sill them, hey?

Lay off the name calling just because you’re a sore loser. And Demon Souls IS deeper than Pokemon, even if you gotta catch ‘em all lmao.

“the vast majority of it isn’t considered canon.”

Actually, the existing vast majority that is available commercially (legally) is considered canon because it is so tightly controlled and policed.

“You cannot substitute the antagonists in Mass Effect for anything organic, without fundamentally altering it’s story. You CAN substitute the technology in Star Wars for traditional fantasy items, and it remains the same story.”

You can have the EXACT same “fundamental” story you have in a fantasy that you do in a piece of science fiction. I never said otherwise. This doesn’t change the fact that one is fantasy because of it’s primarily fantasy based SETTING/ENVIRONMENT/SCENES and the other is science fiction because of it’s primarily technology/science based SETTING/ETC.

Psionics can still be considered science fiction material, though it has also been used in fantasy in the past, so “the force” really isn’t all that. And yes, you can substitute the antagonists (only) in Mass Effect without altering it’s story nearly as much as you would if you took out all the technology in Star Wars and replaced it with something organic.

“Which laws of physics, and which physics? The concepts presented are certainly possible within the realm of quantum physics.”…
    “Incredibly incorrect.”

“Lightsabers immediately present a problem for physics.”

I never said it didn’t present a problem. I said it was possible. Every technology we use today presented a problem before it existed. The reality is technology is advancing at an accelerated rate, so that just as there exists today science fact that was once science fiction, so to much of today’s science fiction will become science fact.

“Star Wars is a FANTASY FILM”

Science Fiction – Literary FANTASY INVOLVING the IMAGINED IMPACT OF SCIENCE ON SOCIETY.

    Star Wars is SCIENCE FICTION.

“You’re failing to realise the distributive property of mathematics.”

Actually I succeeded. Read again and you will see how I already outlined your story before you. Any story can be altered to where it becomes science fiction or fantasy. Yours was largely turning Star Wars into fantasy by turning spaceships into horses and replacing anything technology based with magic. Once again, I already explained how any sufficiently advanced technology could be considered “magic” by primitive civilizations, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is. In fact, nanotechnology has the potential to recreate almost anything previously considered “magic” or “fantasy”. So you could have a fantasy based society via technology. Science Fiction.

“this is the same guy who thinks that Pokemon is the deepest game ever made.”

perhaps, but he would call Pokemon science fiction and Star Wars fantasy… lol.

Cap, the above link is just a teaser, here’s something you can look into which explains the science further:

    amazon.com/Science-Star-Wars-Astrophysicists-Independent/dp/0312263872
“How realistic, how possible, is this galaxy far, far away? The answer when A New Hope first came out was ‘not at all.’ But a strange thing has happened in the years since Star Wars first came out. Science is beginning to catch up with George Lucas.”

A New Hope came out in 1977, likely around about the same time as your quote cap. It was before you were born, so I can understand your confusion. Things were different back then. We were not accustomed to the things you take for granted today (including… gasp! Pokemon!). You also forgot the rest of it: “It’s much more attuned to mythology, to psychology, to history than it is to science.” There are many pieces of science fiction like this. Dune, Stranger in a Strange Land, and Ender’s Game to name a few. They are still science fiction. That they altered some hard science for theatrical effect is hardly surprising, as it is still done in science fiction today as it was back then (BSG comes to mind).

    “So your opinion superceeds his?”

Yes, it was George Lucas’ opinion of his own work. Not fact.

Science fiction can contain fantasy elements by definition. Along with “different dimensions, laws of physics, mythology, psychology, and history” (contained within the rest of Lucas’ quote).

Dans brings up an excellent point as well. Darth Vader also survived as long as he did because of the life support technology in his suit.

I kept my way of determining the two simple. If there’s any question I fall back to this.

If Earth exists it’s sci fi. If not, it’s fantasy.

Star wars should be fantasy yet they throw that monkey wrench in there with the opening tag line indicating the place is real and set far away in the past.

Is my way full proof. Of course not. I can site many fantasies where earth exists. Those of course would never be questioned in the first place. (Alice in wonderland, Pans labyrinth, etc.)

Just about every story ever written parallels others in different genres,
That doesn’t mean we can strip it down to the core and replace the props and claim it belongs in a different genre..

Starwars is pretty much Lord of the rings in space..
    Starwars is Science Fiction

  125. CaptBirdman:

    Simple.

Vader would never have been chopped to bits because the technology– lightsaber– is impossible to do, the physics–him jumping from a standing position close to 15 feet in a somersault over obi wan– wouldn’t allow such a superhuman feat, and they would have never been fighting on the floating platforms because floating platforms don’t exist.

Lightsabers are limited beams of energy, keyword being limited. As they are depicted in the film, there is no way in the natural sciences that lightsabers can exist, as they are limited beams of energy. Ergo– impossibility. I know you like to delude yourself that “nanotechnology” can produce a beam of energy stemming from a hilt, but the truth is lightsabers are generally accepted to be the 4th state of matter– plasma. To create a limited beam of plasma (if possible at all) you would need a nuclear power source. Not to mention plasma will phase through plasma, but not much else (in a destructive sense). What does this mean? Well, no lightsaber duels because the swords would go through each other.

“I never said it didn’t present a problem. I said it was possible. Every technology we use today presented a problem before it existed.”

Not for physics, and you’d be an idiot to believe otherwise. Besides being impossible as described above, postulate your theory how a real lightsaber, as depicted in the films, can be created. Mind you, you’re dealing with a huge Star Wars fan who has heard every theory imaginable, so do no google– I can tell. I’d like to hear your opinion based on your own understanding of thermodynamics and physics. This should be interesting.

“A New Hope came out in 1977, likely around about the same time as your quote cap.”

I love when you assume things and then you’re absolutely incorrect. That quote was from a 2008 interview, when discussing the then-new series the Clone Wars.

“You can have the EXACT same “fundamental” story you have in a fantasy that you do in a piece of science fiction.”

Again, your understanding of Mass Effect is insufficient. Commander Shepard’s story is about fighting the machines, and stopping those machines from destroying sentient life in the Milky Way galaxy. That is the fundamental story of Mass Effect. That is a basic as it gets. To strip it any further would be to strip what is Mass Effect. Do you not understand the title of the game? The second meaning of the double entendre “Mass Effect” is the technology which powers everything, including the Reapers– mass effect. To strip the technology is to destroy the whole story.

This is the tenant of Sci Fi– it NEEDS technology to function, whereas fantasy does not.

Mass Effect– man/woman saves galaxy from machines that reside in dark space.
Star Wars– man saves galaxy from evil empire

See the fundamental difference? That is as basic as it gets. Any true Sci Fi fan has this understanding of the medium– if it can be done in another genre, it is NOT sci fi.

“Please professor. Prove how any of the concepts are “impossible”? Nanotechnology makes any of the concepts not only possible, but probable. To include “Lightsabers, midichlorians, clairvoyance, a and light-speed capable ships.””

LOL first, you cannot prove an impossibility. Second, because YOU’RE the one making a claim, the burden of proof is on you. And it is evident you have not gone to a serious university and studied real science–

1, Midichlorians (in the film) are biological, meaning they are still providing telekenetic abilities, with no scientific explanation as to HOW they work other than “they communicate with the Force” –Qui Gon Jin.
    2. If you believe clairvoyance is real, why don’t you believe in God (as evidenced by you Facebook page)? They are both supernatural with no basis in science at all, and no proof exists that either exists.
3.Light speed capable ships are overwhelmingly impossible. Eschewing the fact that accelerating to the speed of Light requires infinite energy, Einstein equation has proove it as an impossibility. The famous formula E=mc^2 represents this.

Ding Ding, school is now in session

(Try to keep up old man)

    m = m0 / ?(1- v2/c2), where

    m0= object’s mass at rest
v = velocity of the object
c = the speed of light
    m0= object’s mass

According to this formula, no object can travel faster or equal to the speed of Light. If, in theory, an object can reach the speed of Light, the immense amount of energy is converted to mass, so it no longer accelerates.

    Theory of Relativity 101

” Nanotechnology makes any of the concepts not only possible, but probable. To include “Lightsabers, midichlorians, clairvoyance, a and light-speed capable ships.” ”

environmentally benign material abundance for all by providing universal clean water

    nutritionally enhanced interactive ‘smart’ foods.

cheap and powerful energy generation clean and highly efficient manufacturing

This is why it is fantasy.

That is not how it is described in Star Wars.

“The hyperspace travel in the Star Wars franchise requires two elements, Light speed travel and Hyperspace. Gravity supposedly reaches between branes. In Star Wars, gravity in real spaces forms gravitic “mass shadows” in hyperspace. Hyperspace in Star Wars is unrelated to the presumed space between universal “bubbles” in real life physics.”

  134. phranctoast:

Do what you want. Your condescending attitude won’t be missed.

  135. CarlB:

“the technology– lightsaber– is impossible to do”

Yes, and fitting a computer inside the space of something less than an entire office building was once “impossible to do” also. Miniature nuclear power sources are not impossible, or sufficient nanotech batteries (projected to be ~50 years out as shown in the linked video).

“the physics–him jumping from a standing position close to 15 feet in a somersault over obi wan– wouldn’t allow such a superhuman feat”

Yes, with a sophisticated enough nanoswarm, bionics, or bioengineering this is possible. Once again, you are thinking with today’s existing technology, and not looking into what is possible in the future.

“and they would have never been fighting on the floating platforms because floating platforms don’t exist.”

Once again, any object could be held aloft within a manipulated gravity environment or by an invisible nanoswarm, even a “floating” platform. It’s people like you in ages past that said man would never travel by air, that light without flame was “impossible”, etc.

“there is no way in the natural sciences”

I guess man has discovered all there is to know about natural sciences. No more advances to be made there… lol.

“Not for physics, and you’d be an idiot to believe otherwise.”

You’d be an idiot to actually think we have discovered everything there is to know about physics, or even think that everything we have discovered so far is infallible.

“Again, your understanding of Mass Effect is insufficient. Commander Shepard’s story is about fighting the machines, and stopping those machines from destroying sentient life in the Milky Way galaxy.”

Again, your understanding of technology is severely limited in it’s scope, as is your vision of future technology (and by future I mean anywhere from 10-1000 years out). The “machines” could be replaced with any sufficiently similar bio-organism and the results would be the same. A “mass effect” can exist in the universe without man/alien made “technology”. It could even be “the force” that “powers everything” instead of “the technology” that powers everything.

“This is the tenant of Sci Fi– it NEEDS technology to function, whereas fantasy does not.”

Agreed. There is plenty technology in Star Wars, making it science fiction. It is integral to much of the story. There is little to none in Fantasy. Now if Star Wars did have castles, magical Pokemon ponies, and cowboys with medieval swords (thank you George for not doing this) instead of a star made with technology, TIE fighters, and Jedi Knights/Space Smuggles with Lightsabers/Lasers then I would agree with you that it is strictly Fantasy. Fortunately, George Lucas did make it with technology and science dominating the fantasy instead of “magic”, and no matter how much he wishes to emphasize psychological, historical, or mythical elements over the science fiction (which does contain fantasy), it is still science fiction because of the technology and science contained therein.

“Star Wars– man saves galaxy from evil empire”
    and evil machine(/s).

    “real science”

It is called science FICTION for a reason.

“why don’t you believe in God”

I never said I didn’t believe in “God”. I said I was “non-religious”. Learn the difference.

“Light speed capable ships are overwhelmingly impossible.”

Riight. And flight was impossible. Then spaceflight. Now it’s light speed travel. Welcome Neo-Luddite.

“The famous formula E=mc^2 represents this.”

The “genius” has spoken. NOTHING will EVER supercede this, for it is infallible. NO TECHNOLOGY could EVER work around this law. NO form of energy or technology or new theory could EVER counteract or work around it’s THEORETIC limitations. IT IS CALLED A THEORY FOR A REASON. LEARN THE DEFINITION.

“SCIENCE” is a work in progress, and we are lucky if mankind has discovered more than a few “atoms” of what actually exists in the universe.

  136. phranctoast:

Aside from Nano tech in which Carlb is highlighting… Remember. We use a fraction of our brains potential. Telekinesis could be possible with further expansion of what we don’t use. That would also further explain some peoples reception to “the force”.

  137. phranctoast:

Many movies take cinematic liberties and they are still considered Sci Fi and not fantasy.

Just look at Independence Day. There were so many “movie mistakes” one can write a book.

I see it on Wiki with no reference. Hyperdrive and light speed are the same in my book. Again….Star Trek has it…BSG has it…Event Horizon has it. All represent Sci Fi and not Fantasy.

  138. phranctoast:

Quite frankly Birdman. I’d agree with you if they never tied Star Wars to our reality with it’s opening tag line.

  139. CarlB:

“The ‘optimistic’ benefits of the applications of nanotechnology are as follows–”

OH NO! The Wikipedia “genius” strikes again by stating all possible applications of nanotechnology! lol.

    http://www.kurzweilai.net/

“I think my efforts to educate would be much more appreciated elsewhere.”

You are not stating anything that I haven’t already known. I do appreciate the discourse though.

“This is why it is fantasy.”

No, this is why it is science FICTION, and a science FICTION movie tailored for the masses who wish to be entertained, not bored by a lack of sound in a vacuum, accurate flight dynamics that may not “look as good” to them, or a science fiction flick that is limited by existing theories which will likely look extremely primitive/limited within a century.

  140. CarlB:

And since you want to talk about what on people’s facebook pages…

“Fight Club, Harry Potter series, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Animorphs series” is all you have listed for books that you’ve read? No wonder this conversation is going south. And why is your education blank? This certainly doesn’t look like the page of a self described “English Major” “genius”…

  141. CaptBirdman:

“The “genius” has spoken. NOTHING will EVER supercede this, for it is infallible. NO TECHNOLOGY could EVER work around this law. NO form of energy or technology or new theory could EVER counteract or work around it’s THEORETIC limitations. IT IS CALLED A THEORY FOR A REASON. LEARN THE DEFINITION.”

(this will be the last post that I’ll respond to you about this subject, because you’re talking speculatively, and not what is scientifically established, and arguing against EXPERTS– not me, but experts’ analyses–with no formal education in any of these fields. I happen to have relatively minor education compared to the modern scientists who dedicate their lives to these subjects, including Einstein himself, but I do have basic understanding of these postulations, equations and scientific explanations without need of google or wikipedia (However I will occasionally provide links to my sources for visual’s sake) because I’ve actually studied these things. You do not, as evidenced by the above quote )

    OK.

Scientific theory is not the same as “theory”. Scientific theories are facts, whereas a non-scientific theory is not a fact. Example– biological evolution by natural selection is a fact, and a scientific theory, called Darwin’s Theory of Biological Evolution. When most people hear “theory”, they are really thinking of philosophical theories, which are concepts and ideas.

“The scientific definition of the word “theory” is different from the colloquial sense of the word. Colloquially, “theory” can mean a hypothesis, a conjecture, an opinion, or a speculation that does not have to be based on facts or make testable predictions. However, In science, the meaning of theory is more rigorous. A theory is hypothesis corroborated by observation of facts and make testable predictions. In science, a current theory is a theory that has no equally acceptable or more acceptable alternative theory.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution_as_theory_and_fact

    Learn the definition yourself.

“Do what you want. Your condescending attitude won’t be missed.”

    Please, cry some more! :D

  142. CaptBirdman:

““Fight Club, Harry Potter series, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Animorphs series” is all you have listed for books that you’ve read? No wonder this conversation is going south. And why is your education blank? This certainly doesn’t look like the page of a self described “English Major” “genius”…”

Why, because the things I like couldn’t possibly be any different from educational materials? LOL Keep trying Carl, keep trying.

But I had my Education listed, and it still is there, only now it’s private, along with other personal information as well as my friend’s list. But if you would provide me with your email address, I’d happily email you a scan of my Bachelor’s degree, and my official transcript, as I still have them on my PS3 because I had to send them to Japan in order to get my job as a teacher. The transcript also has my IQ on it, which classifies me as “genius level intellect”, with a 122.

Not bragging or lying, just stating what’s real. What’s your email?

  143. CarlB:

I already know the definition cap. You are still not listening to what I am saying. Just because a scientific theory exists today does not mean it cannot be replaced with something better, it is infallible in all situations, or it dictates the limits of all technology in the future.

“It is worth noting that most of these concepts are not necessarily ‘wrong’ in the traditional sense; rather, they have been replaced by other theories that are more complete and reliable.”

    http://www.toptenz.net/top-10-most-famous-scientific-theories-that-turned-out-to-be-wrong.php

  145. phranctoast:

Condescending and pretentious. What an awesome mix.
    :D

  146. CarlB:

“Why, because the things I like couldn’t possibly be any different from educational materials?”

No, because I was curious and like reading also. If those four titles are really the only books you like that you have read, then so be it.

“The transcript also has my IQ on it, which classifies me as ‘genius level intellect’, with a 122.”

That’s fine. I was tested by a psychologist in middle school at 180, then skipped a grade in high school, but was still bored. I still don’t think I’m a genius, because I haven’t really done anything with it beyond a 4.0 GPA in the courses I have taken and rising to Master Sergeant in the Marine Corps ~5 years or so ahead of the majority of my peers with little real effort.

  147. SW:

Man this thread is full of fucking gaming based win!

I think the word “postulated” was even used here somewhere!

The SW man has a request for the folks at blorge.

Carlb or birdman can post in any thread. But if Carlb or birdman should posts in a thread, then the other cannot.

Anyways, I’m off to have a debate with a potted plant about which is better, watching paint dry or watching gass grow BECAUSE BOTH WOULD BE MORE INTERESTING THAT THE GARBAGE YOU’RE FILLING THIS THREAD WITH.

    Thank you.

  149. phranctoast:

I think it’s an acceptable fact and can be backed up via wiki that watching grass grow is better.

  150. SW:

    I win, I am SUPERIOR!!!!111oneone

Well, technically I found him. You are all welcome to add me on facebook should you choose to do so. PSN message me

    I’m not as bad a guy as you’d think. Just a “Master-Debater” :D

” Where were you going to teach in Japan Birdman?”

Ibaraki, which is slightly north of Tokyo. However, I’ll be working for a chain school so the exact location is not known until my departure date– End of March-April.

“Condescending and pretentious. What an awesome mix.”

Condescending, maybe. Pretentious? Nah. Carl likes to bring up old quotes of mine, and all I did was explain my comment was not without it’s grounding. But I’m guessing you missed the statement immediately to the south of what you quoted me on. Ahh.

“Carlb or birdman can post in any thread. But if Carlb or birdman should posts in a thread, then the other cannot.”

I did say we were rivals. *shrugs*

Pre-Alpha and Alpha bug testing for 2K games, in Northridge, CA.

I also lead focus testing, but I’ve only done this twice.

    Cool!
2K recently stated that XCOM and Spec OPs have been pushed to fiscal year 2012 which runs from April 2011 to March 2012.

Can you hint whether or not they will make Calender year 2011?

    LMAO

  159. Roca.:

When is Rockstar’s Agent dropping? what type of game is it?

  160. CaptBirdman:

    Phranc– on XCOM

To be completely honest, I don’t know. The dev teams sent us 4 builds, each more “complete” than the last, and I personally only worked on the last 2. But most of the testing is being done in Australia by 2K Marin.

  161. Roca.:

any info on GTA5…is it the same old shite as the previous ones?

  162. CaptBirdman:

“When is Rockstar’s Agent dropping? what type of game is it?”

I don’t work for Rockstar… R* is owned by Take Two just as 2K is.

It’s like T2 is the parent, and 2K and R* are the children, if that makes sense.

  163. phranctoast:

“any info on GTA5…is it the same old shite as the previous ones?”

I’m sure GTA5 will at least have checkpoints throughout missions. That was a pretty big flaw that was corrected with RDR.

“To be completely honest, I don’t know. The dev teams sent us 4 builds, each more “complete” than the last, and I personally only worked on the last 2.”

Sounds like it will make a 2011 release then. Is it unheard of to receive so many ‘alpha/prelaphca’ builds?

  164. Roca.:

    next Questions then..
    Is Borderlands 2 in development?
what do you think about XCOM?

  165. Godless:

    WOW.

Trying to win a debate against either of you guys would be comparable winning an argument against a woman.

  166. phranctoast:

Borderlands 2 is in development. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen something very recently about it.

  167. Roca.:

“Trying to win a debate against either of you guys would be comparable winning an argument against a woman”

What do you tell a woman with two black eyes?
Nothing, she was already told twice..

  168. Godless:

    LOL. . that’s just bad.

  169. CaptBirdman:

“Is it unheard of to receive so many ‘alpha/prelaphca’ builds?”

Absolutely not. In training, we (my group and I) went through 15 alpha builds of NBA 2K11, in 1 week. (I’m day shift. If you count night shift, then it’s 30)

There are numerous issues in every game and it’s near impossible that we’ll find them all, but each tester finds roughly 20 bugs per day (good days) and devs have to patch accordingly. So there are multiple, multiple, multiple builds per week, especially if our dev team is California based.

  170. CaptBirdman:

“what do you think about XCOM?”

It’s a shooter. A sci fi shooter. LOL

I am sincerely sorry, but I cannot reveal anything that isn’t in press…. Even with the “decent” paycheck I receive, being sued is not something I can afford. 2K explicitly told us they have no qualms slapping us with a million dollar lawsuit, should we breach our non disclosure agreement– especially on the internet.

  171. phranctoast:

    Thanks

    @Roca
There was a pretty big XCOM story in Game Informer. It’s probably available somewhere online.

  172. twilight:

    Roca,
I did not like that joke. You are a bad boy. ..

Pitchford broke the news during a conversation with VG247, saying “I’m sure Duke will have some demands of me and I’ve gotta work on Borderlands 2, right?”Pitchford was still dismissing claims that Borderlands 2 was in the works as late as last month, asking “What’s Borderlands 2?” in response to rumours sweeping the internet.
News of a sequel probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. The original game’s creative director previously told VG247 that a follow-up was “a no-brainer”.

  178. CaptBirdman:

“I wasn’t aware that men bickered so much. It just goes to show that you just have to get guys on certain topics.”

Technically, the reason there were so many comments was because I was literally fighting a battle against 4 different people, each with a strong opinion, alone. They like to gang up on me, and poke fun at the types of games I like, because they don’t like me, my style or because of past disagreements. I don’t really mind that at all, but it gets frustrating and tiresome when they disregard what I’ve said and proven using the sources they, themselves have used and just continuing with their incoherent ramblings.

It’s hard convincing amnesiac cows that they’re still cows. Especially when evidence is disregarded. I’ll still fight the good fight, but not as fervently, and definitely not with “proof”, because it seems if it comes from Bman, it can be trashed.

When I don’t speak “nice” I’m a bastard, douche, arsehole, whiny bitch that plays Pokémon and isn’t hardcore enough to beat certain games. But when I’m speaking academically, I’m condescending, pretentious and elitist (but those that clown me for playing a game I enjoy, or reading a book I find interesting, are not condescending, pretentious and elitist).

What a great readership you have Gamer.Blorge.

Oh nice to hear Borderlands 2 is being developed.
Hopefully it’ll bring significant changes and won’t feel like a expansion (like Bioshock 2).

XCOM coverage has yet to show something good about that game. Shitty graphics is all I see.

  183. oldschool1987:

Erm, Capt. You’re trying to tell everyone that something we’ve always known is wrong: That Star Wars is not even a sci-fi. Of course everyone is going to get a bit funny about it, because it makes absolutely no sense!

I thought we were just having a discussion about it and then you got arsey and started with the name calling. Don’t blame us if we don’t buy what you’re preaching, because the WHOLE WORLD knows that Star Wars is the quintessential Sci-Fi. Can’t we just agree it’s a sci-fi/fantasy?

  184. oldschool1987:

Ah Borderlans, I know the girl who plays Gurdian Angel, her name is Britanni.

  185. CaptBirdman:

    I’d buy that Roca.

I already know the ending (Birdman wins) but the journey’s fantastic.

And Phranc– did that come to you in a dream? That’s some groundbreaking shite!!!

Seriously though, I’d like to know where everyone lives (like state, city, country). If you’re uncomfortable with saying it, then it’s OK, but I’m just curious.

I already know a lot, like SW, TFOS, Carl, Oldy, Rhino, Godless, Kev, CAD, CON, Roca and Dan. But I’m curious about Twilight, Phranc, Boxel, etc.

  194. CaptBirdman:

Hey, I’d say two geniuses on the same team is a good thing. Sucks Johnny died, but Spidey is pretty much a beast compared to everyone in Marvel, let alone HT.

    Maybe it’ll be interesting.

  195. Roca.:

Human Tourch was the best character in the F4 universe and like oldschool said Spider-Man doesn’t need to be anybody’s sidekick

  196. Roca.:

Also – Spider-Man and the F4 are completely different in the way they’re heroes.

Spider-Man’s identity is unknown and he will never reveal it. While in the F4 universe everyone knows who they are…and they seem to like the popularity.

  197. CaptBirdman:

“Human Tourch was the best character in the F4 universe”

The F4 universe is the, Marvel universe as in it’s shared.

“like oldschool said Spider-Man doesn’t need to be anybody’s sidekick”

So, is he the leader of the Avengers, or is Iron Man/Cap America?

But Spidey has been on the F4 many times, and once with Grey Hulk– who was undeniably the leader of the New F4. Spidey won’t be a sidekick. F4 is a team.

And you have to admit the costume is beast mode.

  199. CaptBirdman:

  214. oldschool1987:

London is not the best city in the world, I hated London! lmao. Try going to Hounslew, it’s the trampy back end of …Earth.

  215. twilight:

What are you talking about Roca? Brad Pitt is a good looking man.

  216. oldschool1987:

    Hounslow*

  217. Roca.:

I wouldn’t know about that lol. I meant to say as a actor.

  218. ncaissie:

I don’t like the controls in infamous.
I have a one hour demo from plus I think.
I borrowed it from my brother in-law and gave it back to him.

  219. oldschool1987:

Bradolf Pittler is a great actor, I wish he was doing more films these days, Inglorious Basterds was AMAZING!

‘I wouldn’t know about that lol’

Don’t lie Roca, I ain’t gay but even I can tell he’s a good looking shit lol.

  220. ncaissie:

“I ain’t gay but even I can tell he’s a good looking shit”
Sure you aren’t. You judge therefore you are.
    LOL

  221. ncaissie:

I suppose you drink Homo milk also?

  222. Roca.:

The only male I’m attracted to is myself.

    “Inglorious Basterds was AMAZING”
Yeah but his role could’ve been done by any fool.

You want to see amazing acting? check out The Fighter, Christian Bale owned in that movie – he even got skininer for that role.

Seriously tho, the last great Movie I saw from Brat Pitt (and maybe the only one) was Troy. He did a great job in the Ocean’s series too but that was a collection of great actors.

  223. oldschool1987:

    @ ncaissie:

You seem a bit homophobic, you know what that means don’t you? lol. I’m very confortable in my sexuality, I have a fiance I have been with for 3 years and(not meaning to brag) I have had countless women during my time in the Army, especially when I was based in Cyprus.

Come out the closet ncaissie, you’ll feel better. It’s not shameful, your parents will(maybe) still love you.

    @ Roca:

Yeah C Bale got himself skinnier for the Machinest a few years ago, he looked a mess but was a great performance. He’s a great actor, if only he will change his Batman voice.

  224. oldschool1987:

Also you’re missing out Fight Club ;)

  225. Roca.:

“Also you’re missing out Fight Club”

    Edward Norton…hellooo!

oldschool just came out of the closet
I can already imagine Twilight vs oldschool in a caged match fighting for Brat Pitt lol

    jk

  226. oldschool1987:

LMFAO! I’d have to fight the Mrs 1st though lol.

  227. CaptBirdman:

“London is not the best city in the world, I hated London!”

    http://wtfhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/haters-gonna-hate-gay-batman.jpg

  228. CarlB:

“You have more negative things to always say about Sony then Microsoft except for Xbox live.”

You’ve missed some things. I decided to no longer game on 360 since the price hike of XBL after PSN Plus came out. If I have more to say about Sony gaming products it’s because I use them more.

What “negative” things have I “said” about Sony? That there are certain things that could be better while still praising PS3 as better than 360 for me? How is this “pro-Microsoft”? You are confusing “capable of critical thought” with something that is simply not true.

  229. oldschool1987:

No idea how that picture is revelvent to my comment.

  230. twilight:

“The only male that I am attracted to is myself.” Roca it must be boring being in a homosexual relationship with your self. (smile).
Seriously, like Oldschool said, we all have eyes. As people, we can appreciate beauty in other people.

  231. Roca.:

I appreciate beauty in women :)

  232. oldschool1987:

@ Twilight: LMFAO, Slow down woman! I said I can tell he’s good looking, I never said ‘I appreciate his beauty’ *pukes* lol.

  233. twilight:

    Lol so loudly @ Oldschool.

  234. twilight:

    CarlB,
I thought you knew I was not being serious. I am just messin’ with you.

  235. CarlB:

Don’t be such an XBot twilight.

  236. ncaissie:

“You seem a bit homophobic, you know what that means don’t you?”
LOL I don’t hate fags but I don’t agree with it either. You have specific parts for a reason. That is all I will say about that. lol

  237. ncaissie:

“@ Twilight: LMFAO, Slow down woman! I said I can tell he’s good looking, I never said ‘I appreciate his beauty’ *pukes* lol.”
LMFAO see what you did. Now people think you are gay.

  238. Roca.:

He’s not gay, he just think Brat Pitt is sexy :)

  239. ncaissie:

LOL ok I guess that is not the same.
So OS, do you want to give him a sponge bath?
    LOL jk

  240. Barnabe Jones:

Since the majority of voters cast their votes in favor of considering Star Wars as Sci fi, the motion carries 10 to 1

    *bangs gavel*

Order! Order! Cap please be seated or I will be forced to hold you in contempt of court!

Now, moving on to our next topic of discussion on the Blorge agenda: Which is the better trilogy, Star Wars or Lord of the Rings?

Once each party has prepared it’s statements, the debate can begin.

    *bangs gavel*

  241. CaptBirdman:

    @BJ

Well we all know Nazi Germany was overwhelmingly in favour of murdering Jewish people: doesn’t make them right.

That said– Books go to LoTR. Tolkien murders any attempt at *fantasy* period. And I’m a huge Harry Potter and Piers Anthony fan.

Movies go to Star Wars. I’m aware this is my opinion, and Oldschool probably will disagree because “George Lucas ‘lied’ about his movies”.

    Whatever the fuck that means.

  242. Barnabe Jones:

Ha! No worries. It was a good debate. Better than the usual PS3 vs 360 topic. ;)

As for the movies, I think I’d give the nod to TLOTR.

  243. Roca.:

Well, Well..this is a easy one.

    LOTR hands down.

  244. twilight:

I vote Lord Of The Rings.

  245. phranctoast:

“Well we all know Nazi Germany was overwhelmingly in favour of murdering Jewish people: doesn’t make them right.”

HUH? Not too many people realized what was going on. I’m sure if there was a poll happening and people were asked a majority of the German population would not be ‘in favor’ of murdering the Jewish people.

The people in power aka as the elite minority were in favor of murdering jews.

Thanks for comparing us to Nazis though… :D

I’m a big SW fan and I have to go with LOTR.

They’re simply better movies hands down.

Lets face it. SW wasn’t winning any Academy Awrds for anything other than Technical awards (Editing, Art Direction, Costume Design, Sound, Score, Visual Effects… ect)

  246. dans303:

    LOTR!!

    Smeagle: “What’s taters???”

Sam: “PO-TA-TOES. Boil ‘em. Mash ‘em. Stick ‘em in a stew.

  247. ncaissie:

    LOTR all the way.

  248. phranctoast:

    @dan.

Did you ever see that Youtube video with that whole part in a song..?

  249. CaptBirdman:

“HUH? Not too many people realized what was going on. I’m sure if there was a poll happening and people were asked a majority of the German population would not be ‘in favor’ of murdering the Jewish people.”

Yeah…. realise I said “Nazi Germany”, which was, at the time, a political party. The majority political party. Just keep disagreeing just to disagree.

“Thanks for comparing us to Nazis though”

    Glad you’re happy about that.

  250. oldschool1987:

LMAO you bunch of bastards lol

  251. dans303:

    @phranc

Yeah, I just tried to find a normal clip of that sequence for my above post, but couldn’t because of all the remixes/songs.

  252. oldschool1987:

And LOTR wins easily, my favourite film(s) ever made.

@ Captskywalker: I said he lied about having the whole prequal trilogy planned out before he even made the original trilogy. Parts one and two are a mess, it didn’t have the feel of a film that has been written for 30 years, with 30 years time to correct anything that might be wrong with it (Jar-Jar to name one). That’s all he lied about, stop getting you Jedi panties in a twist.

  253. dans303:

“stop getting you Jedi panties in a twist”

    Jedis wear boxers . . . .

  254. oldschool1987:

And last dig at Star Wars, the way he has made the prequals was a mistake, far too many special effects that will look very dated in a few years time, Phantom and Clones already look rubbish. The originals are timeless but parts 1-3 will not stand the test of time.

  255. oldschool1987:

@ dans: Not the female Jedi. I remember seeing one with squid hair lol

  256. Godless:

squid hair and panties just don’t go.

she’d be better off going commando I’d say

  257. CaptBirdman:

I actually like Captain Skywalker… That was a good one.

But I’m Black, so it’s Captain Windu– motherfucker! :D

But I switch off Boxers and briefs. And stop talking about my underwear you nancy!!!!

  258. Roca.:

    Next debate…

    Twilight vs Harry Potter

  259. dans303:

    Twilight!! :)

There’s just something about the emotional journey you go through for each film. And the depth of the characterisation is phenomenal.

    ^sarcasm^ ;)

  260. oldschool1987:

Roca is that a joke? Don’t get me started on Twilight!

…Too late! Twilight is the GAYEST fucking movie EVER! They have ruined the Vampire genre, they have made Vampires gay little, whiny fuck monkeys who are too scared to have sex with his girlfriend, even though she is fucking BEGGING for it! The Lost Boys was a very cool Vampire film, but Twilight the Vampires glitter in the sunlight …FUCKING GLITTER!!!! How fucking retarded is that!? He should explode! lol.

‘I am a monster’ he says while he glitters lol GAY!

As for Bella, well she is one cock teasing tart, playing both sides against each other, she keeps stringing them on big time. Her acting is a joke as well, all she does is talk in one long drone, with out once changing her voice tone or facial expressions.

And wolf boy, Jake is easily the WORST actor I have ever seen in my life!!! I watched Eclipse with the Mrs and couldn’t stop laughing at how bad his acting was during his tent talk scene with Edward, I’ve seen better in soaps.

Why these films keep winning awards over better films like Inception, Avatar, etc. It even beet Avatar to best special effects when New Moon came out!

Twilight is a fucking waste of film! I’m glad Bella gets torn apart by her baby in the last one, the cock teasing cow deserves no less lol.

    End of rant.

  261. oldschool1987:

Then again True Blood is making Vampires cool again, in True Blood they are feral, vicious and very violent …also very horny lmao.

  262. Roca.:

oldschool had seen the movies and read the book. lol

    Twilight it is then…

    Next debate.

    Inception or Matrix

  263. oldschool1987:

@ Roca: Yeah I read the books before the first film hit the cinema to see what the hype was, they weren’t TOO bad, weren’t the best either. It had the advantage of not having the shit acting. And I had to watch the movies, Christina made me, after all I have forced her to watch all BSG, 24, Lost, The Shield, Dexter …but she couldn’t get into The Wire lol. We’re on Only Fools and Horses now :D

As for the next debate, I would have to say Matrix, just because there’s 3 of them and the stories are so complex, maybe Inception will take over if it becomes a trilogy, Inception does have my favourite director at the helm though (Chris Nolan-Come on the Brits! lol).

Can’t wait for The Dark Knight Rises! The previous film is my 2nd favourite movie(after LOTR).

    Why so serious?

  264. Roca.:

My vote goes to Inception over any Matix movie.
The whole Trilogy gets my vote tho.

    Here is a good one.

Mission Impossible trilogy vs Bourne Trilogy vs Casino Royale/Quantum Solace

    Bourne takes my vote.

  265. dans303:

Bourn gets mine. But, for just one sequence out of all those films it has to be the first ten mjinutes in Casino Royale where Bond is chasing the freerunner guy. My jaw dropped when I first saw that.

  266. oldschool1987:

Ok Roca I agree, let me just clarify. You said Inception or The Matrix, which I take as the entire Matrix Trilogy. But Inception beats any single Matrix film easily but if you compare it to the whole trilogy then The Matrix has more going for it.

Mission Impossible ain’t that great anymore, MI:2 is too dated now due to too much slow-mo. MI:3 is great with JJ Abrahms at the helm, but it’s still juts a run of the mill action film.

Bourne does win hands down, I agree. Ultimatum is one of the greatest action films going. Casino Royale still blows me away though, I honestly can’t decide if any Bourne movie is better. Quantum sucked, weren’t that impressed. I like who the new director is for the next Bond film, Sam Mendes. He’s a talented director.

But lets face it, any 24 movie will kick their asses. No one messes with Jack lol.

  267. oldschool1987:

Hey look, even a IGN editor puts Star Wars in the sci-fi catagory

    http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/114/1149175p1.html

  268. Roca.:

I agree with both Dans303 and oldshool

Dans303 – “Casino Royale where Bond is chasing the freerunner guy. My jaw dropped when I first saw that”

One of the best open scene of all time.

oldschool – “honestly can’t decide if any Bourne movie is better”

    haha same here

    oldschool – “Quantum sucked”

it was garbage, the first one brought new life to the franchise..the sequel killed it.

MI is great.. better than the Bond movies. I’m really looking forward to the 4th one.

  269. phranctoast:

@Capt. Not disageeing to disagree. I thought you meant the country of Germany under Nazi rule….which is what it sounded like. If you just meant the party itself and not the population I figured you would have said as much.

    @All
I enjoyed all Mission Impossible movies. I found the Bourne movies sleep inducing..Casino Royale was awesome. Quantum of boring…not so much.

I agree with the general consensus that Inception was better than any one Matrix movie, but the trilogy itself takes the cake.

Harry Potter hands down. Prizoner of Azkaban being my favorite. Twilight is for prepubescent girls.

  270. phranctoast:

New game..Or Maybe a new game next week when I’m back in front of a PC.

The ‘Alignment game’ for Fictional movie character based off of D&D alignment rules

    Lawful Good, Chaotic Good
    Lawful Neutral, Chaotic Neutral
    Lawful Evil, Chaotic Evil

    Lawful-pays attention to laws
Chaotic-more of a free bird, disregards law

    Indiana Jones. Lawful Good
    Emperor Palpantine. Lawful Evil

  271. dans303:

    “Twilight is for prepubescent girls.”

CAD is hoping for a kinect-based game. ;)

Best HP for me was Goblet of Fire or Order of the Pheonix, but they’re all good.

    Next debate(s):

    Best game-based movie
    Best movie-based game

  272. Roca.:

Best Game-based Movie: Original Mortal Kombat

  273. Roca.:

    @Phranc
I never played D&D, but I heard the 4th Gen is the best one.

  274. Roca.:

Here’s a good one about mind blowing ending.

    Sixth Sense
    vs
    Shutter Island
    vs
    Saw

  275. oldschool1987:

I loved the Silent Hill movie, I thought it was very true to the game. The Resi Evil films have gone fucking retarded! Afterlife was all in slow motion!!! If the film was played at normal speed it would be 30 minutes long.

@ Roca: I guessed the end of Shutter Island when I seen the trailer lmfao! I’m not joking as well lol.

  276. Roca.:

    @oldschool
same here, but for some reason many ppl were shock about it.

My girlfriend fell asleep in the theard..movie was boring imo.

Sixth Sense still blows my mind.. Saw 1 had a jaw dropping ending but after watching a few times it gets kind of old.

  277. ncaissie:

“‘I am a monster’ he says while he glitters lol GAY!”
    I thought you liked gay?

  278. Roca.:

    @oldschool
The MK movie managed to perfectly replicated the world and atmosphere of the MK games.

  279. ncaissie:

“I agree with the general consensus that Inception was better than any one Matrix movie, but the trilogy itself takes the cake.”
Not a chance. The matrix kicks ass. Every one of them. Inception can’t beat any of them. Inception was so meh I would not watch it more than once. i have seen the matrix (all 3) many times.

  280. oldschool1987:

ncaissie you seem very interested in anything gay. You sure you’re not in denial? What you’re doing is called ‘projecting’ look it up.

  281. ncaissie:

I think the X-Men Wolverine is the best movie based game I have played to date

  282. Roca.:

You need to watch Inception again man.

It is basically the new Matrix of this generation.

  283. ncaissie:

    LOL yeah I’m sure.
    I was jk

  284. CaptBirdman:

    Harry Potter
Inception (you made me chose. I’d fuck The Matrix if it was a human. awesome series)
Casino Royale was better than Bourne, but tyat doesn’t mean Bourne was bad at all…
    Best movie game: Final Fantasy.
Sixth Sense, although I hate this movie. Too creepy.

Best Harry Potter book was Order. Best movie– I’m torn between Sorceror, and Deathly Hallows. Can’t wait for part two!!

  285. ncaissie:

Inception was ok but not what I expected. I expected something more Epic.

“What you’re doing is called ‘projecting’ look it up.”
If you believe that psycho bable.

  286. oldschool1987:

You wouldn’t believe it as it goes to show you’re a closet gay. But Psychology is a well known and highly respected proffesion. You an ass or Biceps man? lmao

From now on ncaissie, you shall be called ‘Mr Slave’

  287. CaptBirdman:

    Bunch of benders, you lot

  288. oldschool1987:

No ones as bent as some one in denial, who knows what sort of fucked up shit goes on in their head? lol

  289. CaptBirdman:

    http://www.gamestop.com/ps3/games/borderlands-game-of-the-year-edition/84162?ref=recpdp&cross=930557

    Check the genre.

    Just saying.

  290. oldschool1987:

    http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/114/1149175p1.html

Check what catagory IGN place Star Wars in.

    Just saying.

  291. oldschool1987:

    ‘RPG elements’

That don’t mean it’s an RPG, just that it has RPG elements to it. So does Ratchet and Clank but that game is a platformer, even if the game has more RPG to it that Borderlands, it’s still a Platformer.

  292. CaptBirdman:

Well, I asked my boss today and she said “Borderlands is most definitely an RPG. We won Softpedia’s RPG of the year 09′. ”

Remember, we actually ARE 2K EMPLOYEES.

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/My-RPG-of-The-Year-Borderlands-130356.shtml

    You ain’t saying shit.

Forgot to ask her about Bioshock. Will do so on Monday.

  293. Roca.:

They are both shooter. You should use common sense instead of asking someone else.

Even you said their primary genre is FPS.

  294. oldschool1987:

OK then Capt. Answer this: What is Ratchet and Clank, RPG with platforming elements or Platformer with RPG elements?

Borderlands 1st and foremost is a FPS with a lot of RPG elements …that is it! It is not an RPG with FPS elements, the game plays like a FPS.

I really don’t understand why you always believe the wrong things!

And Bioshock is a FPS survival horror. Please don’t tell me it’s a crime sim.

  295. oldschool1987:

‘Borderlands is a science fiction first-person shooter with RPG elements’

    From Wiki.

‘BioShock is a first-person shooter video game developed by Irrational Games[17]‘

    From Wiki.

  296. CaptBirdman:

I said Bioshock is primarily a shooter. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t an RPG too.

Borderlands is correctly classified as an RPS. Role playing shooter. Shooting is just the means of which combat takes place. Like Pokemon’s combat is turned based, Fallout 3/New Vegas is shooting, DS is hack n slash, NBA 2K’s My Player uses basketball, Madden’s Superstar uses football. But it’s all role playing. Borderlands is an RPG.

    My Boss said it.
Gearbox said it (two of the devs whom I know personally)
    Softpedia said it.
    Gamestop said it.
    Wikipedia said it.

Come on, why are you arguing my product? It’s like me arguing with NBA referees about the rules. They know, I don’t. I think I know, but I really don’t.

I know, you don’t. You think you know, but you really don’t.

    “You should use common sense”

  297. CaptBirdman:

You trust Wikipedia right? OK, here’s what Wikipedia said about Borderlands.

“Recent RPS games include the Mass Effectseries (2007 onwards), Fallout 3(2008), and Borderlands(2009). Borderlands is considered a role-playing shooter due to the heavy RPG elements within the game, such as quest-based gameplay and also its character traits and leveling system, for which its developer Gearbox software has dubbed it as a “role-playing shooter”"

Oldschool, you shouldn’t have any argument after this. You used wiki, and I proved wiki correctly classified Borderlands as RPG. The development team calls it an RPG. My boss (remember, we’re 2K employees!!) said it is an RPG. Gamestop did too.

You’re fortunate I don’t wish to make an international call– I’d get my boss to phone Christoph Hartmann, and we’d call you.

    It has happened before.

  298. oldschool1987:

Wow some one has a bug up their arse. You were saying that Borderlands is an RPG, that is it! I can agree with Role-Playing-Shooter, but just an RPG is bull, the game is more FPS than RPG. If you think it’s more RPG then you’re also admitting that Ratchet and Clank is more RPG than platformer.

And who is Christoph Heartdude? Means fuck all to me, is this one of your pathetic threats again? You need to work on them. I believe you know Gearbox employees as much as I believe MJ never touched children.

If you know Gearbox people personall, then what is the womens full name who plays Guardian Angel …then again, you’ll just google the answer.

Borderlands is a FPS with RPG elements, it’s primary gameplay IS FPS! I don’t care if your mummy disagrees. You were wrong about Star Wars and Pokemong lol. But I can agree it is a Role-playing-shooter.

Seriously though whatever that threat is meant to be, its fucking retarded and pathetic, stop spitting your dummy out and grow up pokeboy.

  299. CaptBirdman:

See the problem you guys are having is that you can’t differentiate gameplay from mechanics.

Role playing is a mechanic. Not gameplay.

The gameplay aspect of Borderlands is undeniably FPS.
The gameplay aspect of Fallout is undeniably FPS.
The gameplay aspect of Mass Effect is undeniably TPS.
The gameplay aspect of Demon’s Souls is undeniably Hack n Slash.
The gameplay aspect of Valkyria Chronicles is undeniably tactical shooter.

But the mechanics of these games– Role playing.

  300. oldschool1987:

WHY COULDN’T YOU JUST SAY THAT BEFORE!!!!!!!!!!

  301. CarlB:

    Star Wars vs LotR
Sci fi vs Fantasy SETTING (better? sheesh.)

    Inception vs Matrix
Two different worlds and times (unless Inception 2 unveils they were in the Matrix the entire time), thought Inception was sufficiently derivative of the Matrix (I’m referring to the first, and best of that trilogy) to immediately invoke thoughts of the film equivalent of plagiarism. Inception is basically the parallel of a remix of Matrix feat. Brainstorm.

Bourne vs Mission Impossible, HP vs Twit, etc.

Is there a Movie of the Year, or Song of the Year?
    Not really.

This is why top 40 lists (or 50, etc.) should reign as better indicators of quality vice otY. (Twit wouldn’t even make the top 100)

    http://www.gameinformer.com/blogs/editors/b/giandy_blog1/archive/2011/01/14/lfte-why-i-love-the-top-50-feb-11.aspx

  302. CaptBirdman:

“Wow some one has a bug up their arse. You were saying that Borderlands is an RPG, that is it! I can agree with Role-Playing-Shooter, but just an RPG is bull, the game is more FPS than RPG. If you think it’s more RPG then you’re also admitting that Ratchet and Clank is more RPG than platformer.”

Man I posted the same quote before. You just overlooked it, because you don’t read what people say. Scroll up. it’s there.

” And who is Christoph Heartdude? Means fuck all to me, is this one of your pathetic threats again? You need to work on them. I believe you know Gearbox employees as much as I believe MJ never touched children.”

Chris is our president. And threat? No, you’re just threatened easily. LOL, it’s why you joined the BNP, no? But I’ll take a picture of a 2K paycheck and PSN message it to you. After you see it, you’ll have to also concede MJ never touched kids 8)
“If you know Gearbox people personall”

only two Gearbox guys came in to 2K West’s office. Had lunch with them at the Jack-in-the-Box down the street. Should I take a picture at next company Potluck too? It’s in March…

And to reiterate–I’m not threatening anyone. I said that because we can call corporate and have them explain things. But if I was trying to threaten your monkey arse, you’d know it. And I have the means to back threats up.

    “Believe it or Not”

    – Robert LeRoy Ripley

  303. oldschool1987:

Fair enough I read it wrong, but you did post it as a threat. I’m not arsed who you know, don’t waste your time with pictures, honestly not interested lol.

And you believe CONvict now do you? So you’re also a terrorist supporting, soldier death cheering, faggit knob jockey as well? I am not a member of the BNP, I’m not a member of any political party because they are all run by cunts, I said once that I agree with a few of the things BNP want brought in, which is less immigration and handing out our jobs to immigrants over more qualified English people. That’s it. But you go ahead and believe that fat cunt who supports Bin Laden.

  304. oldschool1987:

‘But if I was trying to threaten your monkey arse, you’d know it. And I have the means to back threats up’

Now that IS the funniest thing I have ever read! What is it with internet tough guys saying things like ‘If I wanted to kill you I could’ lmfao! Yeah, yeah bore off.

I actually want you to threaten me now and back it up please! Please follow it through, I beg you, I want to see if you’re true to your word. Otherwise I won’t believe you.

Capt how old are you, the reason I ask is because you come across as a teenager to me, the love of Pokemon and the way you disagree with everyone for the sake of it and also because you reckon you can back up threats online lmfao!

I am serious though, please try something. I would love to see if it’s true. You’d probably have my Regiment kill you though pmsl jk

  305. CarlB:

“Role playing is a mechanic. Not gameplay.”

Define the terms and list your source.

  306. oldschool1987:

‘Define the terms and list your source’

He’d have to kill you after Carl, trust me he can back that threat up lmao.

  307. CaptBirdman:

Not going to get into a battle of E-peens. It’s pointless. That’s why I don’t bother with threats. However, I am planning a trip back to London sometime this year when I’m on vacation. I’ll let you know when I’m there, if you still feel sore about what I said mate.

But again– not threatening you or anyone.

To answer your age question, I’m 21 currently, will be 22 in August. (If I’m not mistaken you should be 23, going on 24?) But I’m not sure how age applies…

    “the love of Pokemon”

Oh wait. THAT’s how age applies…. Well seeing as you’re 23/24 years old and still play LittleBigPlanet, I’d say you’re in no position to be elitist. We both play games that are marketed at “children”, but have an underlying depth that only those that actually pick up the games will understand.

“the way you disagree with everyone for the sake of it”

It’s called having an opinion. You should try it sometime.

    Oh wait–

“London is not the best city in the world, I hated London!”

Seems you disagree with 97% of the population. Tsk Tsk.

“So you’re also a terrorist supporting, soldier death cheering, faggit knob jockey as well? I am not a member of the BNP, I’m not a member of any political party because they are all run by cunts, I said once that I agree with a few of the things BNP want brought in, which is less immigration and handing out our jobs to immigrants over more qualified English people.”

Riiight. Because I disagree with the most racist, scummiest sons of bitches in the UK, I support terrorism. Keep rattling that ball bearing you call a brain in that canteen you call a head.

Further– I said threatened like the BNP, because those porkers at the BNP are threatened by the supposed “immigrant threat”. Fuck the BNP, they stand for nothing righteous. They aren’t for English people’s rights. They are for furthering the white supremacist agenda. “English” people are not white people born in England. It’s anyone born in England, and anyone that can get citizenship. I’m English– and I’m Blasian.

Besides. I remember you saying you were a member/supporter.

Give me a minute, I’ll find a direct quote from you stating you’re a supporter.

  308. CaptBirdman:

“Define the terms and list your source.”

What’s the point? I tire of providing sources/proof/quotes/definitions only for them to be shot down as not credible.

    So, I won’t.

But I will tell you to Wiki “game mechanics”, and go down to a neat little section called “gameplay vs mechanics”.

You’ll have 25% of what I would have providided, but it should be sufficient.

  309. CaptBirdman:

    provided*

Also, you’ll do well to note the “Role Playing” section, for a specific example

  310. oldschool1987:

Wow you really are retarded, a direct quote is above you ‘I support a few of there views’ But I don’t think BNP should run the country, too unpredictable, but I do think the current party should use some of their ideas but with different methods. You can say I’m racist but I have black family members and have served with Jamaicans, Fijians and Asians in the Army so …next?

You seem a bit sore about me hating London, well I was based in Hounslow which was fucking shit.

‘Seems you disagree with 97% of the population. Tsk Tsk’

Same can be said about Star Wars being a Fantasy lol.

Well seeing as you want to back up your threat (even though you said you don’t) then you can go out your way to do it! I would love that! I live in Coventry, you can waste your petrol getting here, ill PSN you my address if your adament about it lmfao! You can make the effort seeing as you said you’re the one who can back threats up, so treat yourself lol.

And the reason I asked your age was because you act like a child, I wanted to see if you are one, or didn’t you understand that? Is your brain THAT tiny?

Now you’re knocking LBP just because I mentioned Pokemon? LMFAO! The majority of people on Blorge play that game, but no one has given a shit about Pokemong since school days haha.

    Pick your dummy up.

  311. CaptBirdman:

(Not going to respond to anything above the quoted statement. What would be the point?)

“Now you’re knocking LBP just because I mentioned Pokemon?”

“We both play games that are marketed at “children”, but have an underlying depth that only those that actually pick up the games will understand.”

How is this knocking LBP? This is a bloody compliment!

Maybe you shouldn’t sit on your arse… it seems to be where you brain is located.

“The majority of people on Blorge play that game, but no one has given a shit about Pokemong since school days haha.”

    LOL.
    LMAO.
    LMFAO.
    ROTFLMFAO.

I cannot thank you enough for the laugh, mate.

Seriously though, just because the majority likes something, doesn’t make it infalliable or right.

Bush did get voted into office TWICE. Food for thought.

  312. oldschool1987:

I love winding you up Bird man, you bite so easily lol.

I didn’t realize you were complimenting LBP, my bad.

No idea where my brain is located, never get much of a chance to sit on my arse anyway, maybe it’s in my feet, seeing as I’m always running lol.

I don’t understand the Bush statement, not American so no idea what he done. I just know he took no shit, I think America was lucky to have him, Obama don’t seem to have done much. And now he’s made France their special ally? lmfao. I swear America despised the French not too long ago, didn’t ya’s even change the name of French Fries to American Heroes because you hated them that much?

  313. CarlB:

    “What’s the point?”

Because if you cannot even define the terms you are using for the sake of this discussion then there is no discussion.

“I tire of providing sources/proof/quotes/definitions only for them to be shot down as not credible.”

So your source isn’t credible. It’s your accepted definition and the baseline of the discussion.

    “Wiki”?
“Role-playing games are fundamentally different from most other types of games in that they stress social interaction and collaboration”

  314. CaptBirdman:

“I love winding you up Bird man, you bite so easily lol.”

I have a hard time discerning sincerity from trolling on the internet. In person, I’ll pick it up easily.

“I think America was lucky to have him”

LOL, I’ll wait for other Americans to respond to this, before I chime in. Just know you’re about to get a LOT of shite.

“change the name of French Fries to American Heroes ”

not sure if this is a joke or not… But if it is a real question– LMFAO! Hell no

    Carl– shut up.

RPG is a game mechanic. How you play the RPG, is the gamplay. Simple as that.

I didn’t click your link, but I’m 99.9% sure it’s referring to Role playing as a pen and paper game or hobby/lifestyle, like D&D and the cosplay kind.

We’re on gamerblorge. You’re pathetic. Seriously.

  318. CarlB:

As I said, if you can’t even define your own terms, there is no discussion, let alone logic. “Seriously”.

  319. CaptBirdman:

“you come across as a teenager to me”

I see what you mean OS.

  321. CaptBirdman:

    Let the circle jerk begin.

  322. twilight:

First of all, Oldschool is not a racist just because he agrees with some ideas from a political party. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Citizens from his country should have more rights then immigrants coming into his country regarding jobs.
As far as the movies go:
    Inception Vs Matrix-I pick Matrix
Harry Potter Vs Twilight-I pick Harry Potter
Mission Impossiible Vs Bourne Vs Casino Royale-I pick Bourne first followed by Casino.

  323. CaptBirdman:

“First of all, Oldschool is not a racist just because he agrees with some ideas from a political party.”

First of all, no one said he was.

“Citizens from his country should have more rights then immigrants coming into his country regarding jobs.”

LOL terrible. I’m guessing you’re conservative/right-winged/Republican? You did say you were from the South, so I wouldn’t say I’m too far off base.

England is a country of immigrants. To suggest immigrants shouldn’t be allowed jobs is dumb, no matter how you slice it. Illegal immigrants are one thing, but legal immigrants are what the BNP are against, as well as people of colour– not to mention the fuckers deny the holocaust. I can’t support people who’re against humanity. They are the equivalent of the KKK, but with the power of the Independent party (in the USA). Fuck them and anyone who supports their ideals.

It’s the same as America. “Certain people” believe “they were here first” and should have more privilege than those who legally emigrate from their country. That’s bullshite, and any Repub that thinks like that is a fucking dummy.

  324. oldschool1987:

Denying of the Holocaust and their obvious racism is why I would never fully support them. How can anyone deny the Holocaust when there’s undeniable proof! Fucking retarded if you ask me.

And Capt, try living in England, foreigners get picked for jobs over English people all the time, and I do mean higher qualified English people, I know this from 1st hand experience on a few different occasions with a few different people. One example: my friend left the Army a year ago and joined the police in Manchester, he has seen 1st hand the Police turn down some one with much better qualifications over an immigrant just because they had to get more minorities on the force. Now I’m all for minorities in the Police but when they get picked over some one who would make a better cop, then that pisses me off.

I go to Tesco and not one single person behind the Till speaks English and I know a lot of my friends kept going their for job interviews only to get turned down. Why hire some one who can’t speak to the customers?

I can tell you’re VERY far left Capt. Me, I’m neither, I’m in the middle because I don’t give a fuck about mist things, I can just see with my eyes what’s going on and it’s a joke.

‘It’s the same as America. “Certain people” believe “they were here first”’

I don’t believe just because it’s our Island that we should have the job over everyone else but what I do believe is that English people shouldn’t get turned away just because the companies don’t wanna come off as racist by hiring the better qualified person. If you think that’s racist then fuck you, I don’t give a fuck.

  325. oldschool1987:

‘To suggest immigrants shouldn’t be allowed jobs is dumb, no matter how you slice it’

And where did I say that!? I would like a DIRECT QUOTE of me saying that! They should be allowed to make a living of course! But if they get hired over some one more qualified then that’s wrong.

  326. CarlB:

“’Certain people’ believe ‘they were here first’ and should have more privilege than those who legally emigrate from their country.”

Immigration is fine. It helps if they can at least speak the host country’s language though. What can happen is immigrants set up their own little exclusive mini-country within the host country, where natives of the host country are actually considered “foreigners”, looked down upon, and given less privilege.

  327. CaptBirdman:

Oldy, I was referring to Twilight’s

“Citizens from his country should have more rights then immigrants coming into his country regarding jobs.”

so cool your fucking jets. And I wouldn’t say far left, but the “right” way is wrong :D

“And Capt, try living in England, foreigners get picked for jobs over English people all the time, and I do mean higher qualified English people, I know this from 1st hand experience on a few different occasions with a few different people.”

Now when I was living in England, I was much younger, so I didn’t pay attention to the geopolitical climate as much as I do now. However, I can assure you– America has *exaggeration warning* 10x the amount of foreign people looking for jobs, so it’s safe to say I understand the plight of England.

But I will say this. I find it quite dubious that you know, KNOW, the foreigners were less qualified. How do you KNOW? What did you do, take a peek at their dossiers? This is a genuine question, and I’d really like to know.

(IMO it would be a weak argument that the people you knew just somehow knew the foreigners were less qualified. They’re just sore they didn’t get the job if you ask me)

“What can happen is immigrants set up their own little exclusive mini-country within the host country, where natives of the host country are actually considered “foreigners”, looked down upon, and given less privilege.”

I find this slightly offensive. You have a problem with this?

(To be clear, I’m not condoning “looking down” on people, so mentally erase that part. I didn’t erase it because I like to alter quotes as infrequent as possible)

  328. oldschool1987:

How do I know? Well I told you, my mate is in the Police force and has seen it happen 1st hand. He’s told me it’s happened many, many times and will continue to happen. It was all said in my last comment.

  329. twilight:

Native born citizens should not be disicriminated against for jobs to meet some immigration quota. If you migrate to a country, then you should speak the native language of the country. I am so tired of dealing with people who live in America who can’t even speak English. It is ridiculous.
I am somewhat conservative. I have strong beliefs in traditional values.

  330. oldschool1987:

Twilight is bang on. Everytime I phone the bank I always get a foreigner whos English is terrible. If I have to repeat myself more than twice I always tell them to stick some one else on the phone. Why hire some one to work the phone when it’s so obvious the majority of the people will struggle to understand him.

  331. CarlB:

    “I find this slightly offensive.”

    Why, specifically?

  333. CaptBirdman:

    @Carl

Well, I’m 1,562% against turning this thread into a racial argument, but it seems like you’re bitter when you don’t have the upper hand in a particular neighborhood or area. You have something we call “white privilege”, so when you’re in an area where that means all of jack shite, you resent the people of that area for not kissing your ass.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_privilege

    @Twilight

I won’t say anything to Oldy, because England’s official language is English, but I’m sorry– you’re prejudiced. America does not have an official language. English is de facto. So even if the workers speak bad English, you have no right to say they NEED to speak the “native language”. What the hell is the native language in America? You mean one of the Native American languages? Or Spanish? Because those were here LOOOOONG before English.

Sorry if it feels like I’m picking on you, but I have a MAJOR problem with conservatives because 9 times out of 10 they are uneducated and make racially charged statements and policies.

  334. CarlB:

    @cap

All I said was it “can happen”, then you became offended and projected based upon your own limited experience and paradigm.

Our president, and my commander in chief, is black. I’m in the Marine Corps, and my Sgt Major is black. It means “all of jack shite” if you are black or white or belong to any minority group in the Marine Corps, and it means “all of jack shite” to me if you are black or white or belong to any particular minority group. I judge people by their behavior, good or bad, mature or childish.

I’m “in an area”, i.e. Japan, where being Japanese has it’s privileges. Do I expect them to make laws that cater to my particular race or creed if I become a citizen here? No. Hell no.

    Everyone is “prejudiced”.

“The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”
    ~Chief Justice John Roberts

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_discrimination

  335. CarlB:

And yes, it’s simply logical that if you are going to immigrate to another country then you had better be fluent in it’s primary accepted language.

  336. CaptBirdman:

    “your own limited experience”

    Say what you really mean.

“And yes, it’s simply logical that if you are going to immigrate to another country then you had better be fluent in it’s primary accepted language.”

Not a country where there is no primary language. Again, this is white privilege.

  337. ncaissie:

Everyone deservers equal opportunity. We have a big problem here where the French and minorities are getting preference over jobs. It should go to the most qualified.
Who cares if there are more white people better qualified? Fuckin government dipshits.

  338. CarlB:

Every human on the face of the planet has “limited experience”.

The United States is a country where the primary accepted present day language is English. This is not “white privilege”. You either learn the accepted language of the country or you do not. If you do not wish to accept or speak the primary accepted language of a country, vote with your feet.

  339. SW:

    “Let the circle jerk begin.”

We’d need a biscuit (or cookie for those in NA) for that.

“If you do not wish to accept or speak the primary accepted language of a country, vote with your feet.”

Agreed. Luckily I moved to Canada so I did not have to ‘unlearn’ putting the letter ‘u’ into many words ;)

  340. CarlB:

For the love of “u” SW…

“English and French are the mother tongues of 59.7% and 23.2% of Canadians respectively. English and French are recognized by the Constitution of Canada as ‘official languages.’ This means that all laws of the federal government are enacted in both English and French and that federal government services must be available in both languages.”

cap- “I want blasian to be teh official language and ruling majority/upper class!!!” …Blasianan henceforth becomes established in 2012… Armageddon ensues.

@roca – I think it is the result of a warped radical religious paradigm enforced via a few individuals willing to kill (for their view of their own personal Allah/Mohammed… i.e. God/Jesus/Moses) and govern with fear vice liberty and justice. There is a reason why there should be a separation of church and state. Religious radicalism is but one of many.

  341. twilight:

    CaptBirdman,
The language of America is English not Spanish or Native American. If people are going to live in a country, then they should learn the language of the country they live in. If you find this statement racist, then that is your issue.

  342. CaptBirdman:

” The language of America is English not Spanish or Native American. If people are going to live in a country, then they should learn the language of the country they live in. If you find this statement racist, then that is your issue.”

The language of America is NOT English. If people are going to live in a melting pot country, then they should be able to speak any language in the country they live in. If you find this statement false, then that is your issue.

“cap- “I want blasian to be teh official language and ruling majority/upper class!!!” …Blasianan henceforth becomes established in 2012… Armageddon ensues. ”

Man seriously, shut the fuck up. That was a seriously offensive statement you insensitive prick. “Black” nor “Asian” is a fucking language, so chill out with that shite.

America has no official language, eat it or don’t. And let’s not even comment on the “idiot” English Americans speaks. You think immigrants should learn the language, and I say America should learn the language because the English spoken here is highly corrupted.

  343. oldschool1987:

@ CAP: Every movie, program or book out of America is in English.

  344. oldschool1987:

You get offended FAR too easily Cap

  345. CaptBirdman:

Whatever. He made a racial joke. I won’t be quiet for that kind of nonsense.

  346. oldschool1987:

You know he probably never meant it maliciously. In the Army like I said I have Jamaican, Fijian and Asian friends and we always say really racist things to each other but just in jest, nothing more. I won’t say what we say because you seem very sensitive. The Jamaicans I’m with make the most racist jokes against us and I find it fucking hilarious. Carl is also a Soldier so he probably has the same out look on those sort of jokes, if it’s not meant maliciously but in a lighthearted way then it shouldn’t be offensive. Try chilling out a bit Capt, don’t get too bent out of shape over everything.

  347. SW:

@carl – Yet another post where you manage to confuse me.

I’m quite suprised that the US has no official language, they really need to put something in writing for that.

“they should be able to speak any language in the country they live in.”

Visitor, sure. Immigrants and Citizens, no. Canada actually does this.

  348. SW:

Erm, Canada tests English for Citizens only.

  349. CarlB:

“America has no official language, eat it or don’t.”

True, however the United States does have an official language, it is English, so “eat it or don’t”.

And if you have proclaimed yourself to be “Blasian” on Blorge, which you have, then prepare for the term to be referenced.

“’Black’ nor ‘Asian’ is a fucking language”…
It’s about as much of a language as Engrish. It’s not “official”, but according to you neither is English, what’s the problem, you “vulgar mofo”?

“That was a seriously offensive statement you insensitive prick.”

Again, you called yourself Blasian here before I did. If you are so sensitive about it, then perhaps you shouldn’t use the term yourself.

English is the official language of the US.
    What are you smoking today.

  353. CarlB:

Cap is correct. It is not “official” de jure (by law), however, it is de facto (in fact) the main present day accepted language by the most United States citizens (~82%) representing all races, colors, and creeds.

To emigrate to another country and expect that once you are an immigrant the majority of the host country’s citizens should cater to your own particular preference of language, or get upset that it doesn’t, is ridiculous.

“If people are going to live in a melting pot country, then they should be able to speak any language in the country they live in.”

You can speak any language you desire in the United States because we have freedom of speech. Just don’t expect to have as easy a life as somebody who was willing to learn the main present day accepted language, or the laws of the country to cater to your whim because you chose not to speak or learn that language.

  354. CaptBirdman:

” Again, you called yourself Blasian here before I did. If you are so sensitive about it, then perhaps you shouldn’t use the term yourself.”

I refused to post, or even check the posts here for two days because of the disgusting turn this conversation has taken, in which time I ended up in the hospital, so I apologise for my absence. But the above quote is something else. You misunderstood where I was coming from Carl. I have no problem being referred to as Blasian– In fact, I prefer it. It’s better than being called “Black” or “African American”, of which I’m technically neither, but since America loves to classify people by “race”, I get hit with those titles constantly. I think the situation is slightly better in England. I was almost always referred to as English.

But to address the above quote– Being Blasian is what I am, and I’m damned proud of it. Why shouldn’t I be? Those that are like me are successful, famous, intelligent and 9 times out of 10 gorgeous/handsome. But your “joke” was a disparaging slap in the face.

“It’s about as much of a language as Engrish. It’s not “official”, but according to you neither is English, what’s the problem, you “vulgar mofo”?”

And– What the hell is the Blasian language? I’d really like to hear the explanation, and observe you attempt to writhe out of this one.

I know you are a decent person Carl, and I enjoy our PSN messages and facebook interactions. But you become this arsehole on GB sometimes…

  355. CarlB:

“Being Blasian is what I am, and I’m damned proud of it. Why shouldn’t I be? Those that are like me are successful, famous, intelligent and 9 times out of 10 gorgeous/handsome. But your “joke” was a disparaging slap in the face.”

So you are proud of being Blasian but think it being considered as a possible future form of language is disparaging? Any language that is in common use today is constantly evolving. You above all people should know this. To think that “successful, famous, intelligent and 9 times out of 10 gorgeous/handsome” people could never have their own distinct language is simply being racist.

“What the hell is the Blasian language?”

Likely a mixture of dialects that differ dependent upon which geographical location you are in, maybe similar to, though perhaps not as widespread as, “Engrish”.

You seem to be hypersensitive about something here cap, but if it’s not the term “Blasian”, then what is it?

  356. CarlB:

And cap, I sincerely apologize for offending you.

  357. phranctoast:

LOL. Capt steals a car and then can’t drive it..

    I kid I kid ;)

  358. CaptBirdman:

@Phranc LOL Black and Asian, I get it

    @Carl– Apology accepted :D

Well the thing about being Afro Asian is that there most likely will never be a unifying language because “Asian” is an umbrella term. So if, for example, you don’t speak one of the European languages (Portugese, Spanish, English, German, Dutch, French, Italian, etc) then most likely you’ll speak one of the SE Asian languages (Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Tagalog, etc).

And me being Korean– there will probably never be a language consensus with anyone that is Japanese or Japanese mixed. The historical animosity between these two cultures is like sodium chloride– explosive. Not to mention the superiority complexes BOTH nations share….

And only Japanese speak Engrish. Koreans speak Konglish (google these if you don’t know what Carl and I are talking about– Funny shit)

  359. phranctoast:
