Rumor: top secret reboot in the works for Xbox 360

February 15, 2011

Rumor: top secret reboot in the works for Xbox 360 According to a source Microsoft is planning on announcing a secret game in the coming months. Apparently the new game will be a reboot of a popular game from the past.

According to the latest issue of OXM UK [via CVG], the magazine teases an exclusive reveal of an Xbox 360 game in the works. The magazine writes that the game was set to be revealed next month and is a reboot of “one of the best games ever game.”

You WILL buy this magazine… One of the best games ever made is reborn on Xbox 360.

Unfortunately, OXM sent out an update stating that the reveal will have to wait till April because the publisher wasn’t satisfied with the quality of the game at the moment.

According to the magazine, OXM has been trying to cover the game for “months” and has been a “real nuisance.” This could mean that the game in question may have already been discussed around the rumor mill.

Rarely will a game remain a secret once the developers start talking about it outside the studio.

The most popular speculation at this time is that the reboot is in reference to Halo: Combat Evolved, which released on the original Xbox and is considered a classic by many. There has been strong indication that Microsoft is looking to follow Sony with the HD remake strategy.

This is extraordinarily easy– Halo CE.

  7. twilight:

I would only be surprised if the announcement has nothing to do with Halo.

  8. CAD:

I can’t believe you guys ignored the whole Kinect and Windows Phone 7 integration for this BS that really has nothing in it at all. Oh well this is Blorge so I don’t expect anything great form MS to show up here if Sony’s name is not behind it. Anyways the WP7 integration with Kinect looks like Live multiplayer through the phone is a possibility over Wi-Fi of course. Can’t wait to see more on it.

No way!! It was totally and completely MS’ idea, Sony well copied them. ;)

  17. oldschool1987:

Dan you’re right, Microsoft got the idea for HD remakes years ago but were too invested in creating something never been done before(except the EyeToy 10 years ago). So Sony got wind of this and STOLE the idea of Microsoft! The villians!

Anyone else remember when the Xbots were saying Sony was ripping us off with the HD remakes? I wonder how many of them same people will buy this game lol

  18. phranctoast:

Anyone thinking they’re being ripped off by HD remakes can simply not buy it. It’s like saying people are being ripped off by buying blu ray versions of catalog movies.

No ones forcing anyone to buy them.

Anyone remember a game called Power monger. .I would love to see that game re-done now that the hardware is up to the games needs. I’ve often thought about atempting it myself, but lack the knowledge for programing any of the AI in game, so basicaly I’d need to pull in others to do 95% of it.

I had it on the Amiga. and the megadrive .and looking at it now it’s almost imposible to tell what’s what, but at the time it was fantastic.

I think the game mecanics don’t need touched, it simply needs a graphical face lift. I’d pay full price for it if it were available

Interestingly enough, Game Informer reports in their 2010 top 50 breakdown (pg. 38) that 360 (34) has 5 more top games than PS3 (29)…

    360:

    Mass Effect 2
    Halo: Reach
    Splinter Cell: Conviction
    Alan Wake
    Limbo
    Super Meat Boy
    Fable III
    Pinball FX 2
    Dance Central
    Ilolimo

    PS3:

    Heavy Rain
    MLB10
    God of War III
    Joe Danger
    Gran Turismo 5

  30. Roca.:

    @CarlB
I was talking about 2011. As for last year

SS:C & ME2 are multiplatform…besides that the only quality exclusive is Halo Reach. While on PS3 you have GoW3, Heavy Rain, MLB the Show, Modnation, Sly Collection and GT5…

Here is the ‘exclusive’ break down for 2010:

    PS3 =========================
    92 God of War 3
    91 MLB 10: The Show
    87 Heavy Rain
    85 Sly Collection
    84 Gran Turismo 5
    82 Modnation Racers
    80 Yakuza 3
    77 3D Dot Game Heores
    76 MAG
66 Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland

    360 ========================
    91 Halo: Reach
    85 Splinter Cell: Conviction
    83 Alan Wake
    80 Darwinia+
    80 Fable III
    77 Metro 2033
    75 Tropico 3
    75 Supreme Commander 2
    70 Crackdown 2
    66 Deadly Premonition

If I was to remove all the PC/360 multiplatform games then the top 360 exclusives will look like this:
    91 Halo: Reach
    83 Alan Wake
    70 Crackdown 2
    66 Deadly Premonition

CAD and his windows phone, here was last quarters numbers

Units sold (in millions) for quarter 4 2010
    Google 33
    Nokia 31
    Apple 16
    RIM 14
    Windows 3

Market share paints the same picture as above….

Sorry CAD but, android/iOS are still the smartphones to own, windows m7 isn’t even making a dent, as recent sales trends show a steadying of sales already……

I told you CAD, MS is having its ass beat across the board in pretty much every department EXCEPT its 2 cash cows: the OS market, in which it firmly has over 90% of the market share….and what category MS office falls into…everything else…smartphone/touchscreen tech/games division etc…

I think MS is in for a little bit of humbling…

    Back to the topic:
I predict it to be Mech Assault!!! I loved mech assault 2…i loved being the dropship guy, I was really good, at least for the free month my bro was playing it for…

And before you mock me for not trying a w7m phone…my sister in law just got the htc w7m for tmobile…it is pretty slick, very clear screens…but, I’m not a fan of the zune interface, although I do like the fonts in their menus ;) , but they face an extreme uphill battle and no amount of kinect features are gonna help…

While this secret reveal is interesting, The IGN reveal I posted about happens today and not in April.

MS has also stated that they are planning an event the week before GDC 2011 (Feb 28th-Mar 4th) so that means we may have a reveal next week too.

  38. ncaissie:

XBLA and PSN games don’t count for anything because they are shitty phone games ported to the consoles.

  39. CAD:

    @Mike

You create an article that is specualtion about a game and yet it has no name. Wow such big news!! Even if it Halo 1 who cares. Played it and I’m not going back. When there is a name to the game let me know but yes the WP7 integration with Kinect is more intresting then an article about nothing. Your a Microsoft hater so I don’t expect nothing more from Blorge anyways. You guys have lost all your 360 people who come here anyways because of your bias writing so be happy with the cheque that Sony pays you.

Nokia might support more OS’s or might go back to Sybian/MeGoo…so far shares are not looking good since the MS/Nokia annoucements

“Nokia shareholders are not very happy right now with NOK taking a 25 percent hit since the announcement of the Microsoft marriage. Stephen Elop, Nokia’s first foreign-born CEO, is taking heat on multiple fronts even as he prostrates himself to the media in hopes of getting his message out. Already, we’ve heard numerous conspiracies calling Elop a “trojan horse,” sent by Steve Ballmer to sabotage Nokia from within. Conspiraloons are quick to point to records showing Elop holding a significant number of Microsoft shares — a situation that Elop says is temporary (and outdated) having already sold a majority of his Microsoft position with plans to sell off the rest in favor of Nokia stock just as soon as he’s free to do so under regulatory moratoriums meant to prevent insider trading. Nevertheless, Nokia will be facing at least two very real showdowns on its near-term horizon.

First, will be a battle with the Finnish trade union Pro which is demanding €100,000 (in addition to severance payments) for every Nokia employee that loses their job under Elop’s new strategy — money the unions says will be used for reeducation. The union estimates that Nokia could cut as many as 25% (5,000 people) of Nokia’s 20,000 workers located in Finland. The second major hurdle facing Elop, and the board of directors that appointed him, will come at Nokia’s Annual General Meeting for shareholders. Already, a cabal of nine frustrated shareholders have been grabbing attention with its “Nokia Plan B” proposal to oust Stephen Elop and return Nokia to a MeeGo focus giving Symbian a five-year minimum reprieve. The group has since disbanded after its plan was rejected by institutional investors. Nevertheless, we don’t expect Symbian / MeeGo fans and developers to give up without a fight, and we expect Helsinki Fair Centre’s Amfi Hall to be center-ring when the event kicks off on May 3rd in Helsinki.”

This news is from OXM you dolt….Not Mike. He’s not making this up, just reporting it.

  42. phranctoast:

    *Update to this Story*

“The secret classic game referenced on the latest issue of OXM UK – and set to be “reborn” on Xbox 360 – is NOT Halo: combat Evolved.

Magazine editor Jon Hicks has told CVG that the title is not from the Bungie canon and clarified: “OXM never claimed it was an Xbox exclusive – merely that it was exclusive to the magazine.”

He added: “It has been correctly identified in the CVG comments thread, though. I’m impressed – although I still can’t reveal which one of the guesses are right.”"

  43. Roca.:

    any guesses?

  44. phranctoast:

    @CAD
After watching that video I realized what a sad little man you are. The Kinect/WP7 integration was stupid at best. I mean…really? who cares. So the person with the phone can control the balls that the other guy had to slap away from his face…..great. *rolls eyes*

I can also control my music through my TV/cablebox with my phone. I can control my DVR and use the phone as a remote if I wanted to. I can control Itunes on my PC via the iPhone too.

Not really features that are news worthy.

If you like this Kinect/wp7 feature, you should love the ‘remote play’ feature built into the PS3 that enables you to play PS3 games on the PSP via wifi. In makes the PSP the first Onlive device, so to speak.

  45. phranctoast:

    “any guesses?”

    Well…Someone guessed right on CVG.

Legacy of Kain, Buldur’s Gate, Time Splitter or Fatal Frame are my guesses.

Its pretty pitiful that in an xbox article…your sitting there whining about there being no xbox coverage….

    Let me say it again:
CAD is complaining about lack of quality articles about the 360….in a 360 article posted a few hours ago……ah the ironynand hypocrisy of it all<—- this is why kkev/con/happy no longer post….we call you and them on their bullshit…they can't stand be proven wrong, when they are in fact wrong 100% of the time..son in a bitchy hissy fit…leave…

“Dead Island sounds familiar to you, then you have a good memory. It was originally announced in 2007, but no publisher was officially attached. Techland worked on other projects in the years since, but Dead Island was slowly shuffling along in the background. Now, Deep Silver is on board, and the game seems likely to see the light of day. It’s scheduled for a 2011 release on Xbox 360, PC and PS3, but no specific dates have been revealed yet.

Dead Island’s concept is striking. Place players on a tropical island; surround them with zombies of varying shapes, sizes, speeds and abilities; place only found objects at their disposal; degrade their weapons over time; and set the whole adventure against a backdrop of mystery and drama. But will a first-person melee combat action game with RPG elements really work? ”

“The Royal Palms Resort is perched on the remote island of Banoi in Papua New Guinea. It’s a tropical paradise turned tourist magnet, remote and exotic. Not the sort of place you’d expect to find scattered caches of weapons, boxes of grenades, rocket launchers leaning against walls, and mounted machine guns. In an effort to preserve that reality, Techland, the developers of Dead Island, have stripped those handy gaming conventions away, leaving a stark reality in their place.

Rather than run-and-gun their way through a meat maze, players will be forced to scavenge for objects and use them to beat their undead foes into submission. There are precious few firearms scattered around the island (and even less ammo), so the majority of the combat will be intimate. Knives, machetes, bats, broomsticks, pipes – these are your defenses against the horde of infected monsters. It’s survival horror with a melee action twist, and it’s disgusting. ”

Sounds like it could be a good game, A kind of Res Evil 2 with less weapons.

Not sure this is actually the game the headline was targeted at. Why would MS be holding back announcing a multiplatform release?

And this is not “a popular game from the past”.

I think they have something else up there sleeves.

Back in the day I was playing Drakengard for PS2. I thought the game was awsome but I eventually saw something I thought was a bit disturning at first lol.

I found it on youtube so here it is

  84. FahKinSuPah:

    BTW

I’m getting a lil sick of zombies.

Pardon the pun but they’ve been done to death.

Anyone else feel the same way?

  85. phranctoast:

    It’s the new craze…..like Vampires.

  86. FahKinSuPah:

For some reason vamps are always big in moments of economic problems.

But they haven’t been making a million games based on vampires. They are bigger in books and film.

Zombies are much more “livelier” in video games and also George Romero’s head when he sleeps at night.

How many zombie games have we gotten in this generation alone?

    Shit, even CoD features zombies!

  87. Roca.:

Last Year was the Year of the Zombies.

    -Zombie Apocalypse
    -Plants vs Zomnbies
    -Dead Nation
    -RDR’s Undead Nightmare
    -Black Ops Zombies
    -Borderlands’ Zombie Island

  88. ncaissie:

I’m tired of the zombie thing also.

  89. FahKinSuPah:

    @Roca

At least Bordlands Zombie Island of Dr Ned was pretty funny. It really poked fun at the whole zombie thing. And I love the Scooby Doo references too lol.

Plants vs Zombies was probably the most unique of all those games you listed though.

  90. phranctoast:

    unique?

It’s tower defense with Zombies as the enemies and plants as the towers.

  91. phranctoast:

At least they removed the zombies from the Resident Evil games ;)

  92. Roca.:

    ^ LOL

  93. phranctoast:

Alan Wake download is being sold on Amazon for $4.29.

Maybe at that price it will finally outsell Heavy Rain…which is still being sold a $50+ :(

  94. The Future of Sega:

    Roca,

Which one? I’ve posted at several sites recently. Most recently attackofthefanboy. For those of you keeping tabs on me I’ve been raising mayhem on that site…those bastards keep giving me thumbs down and it’s PISSING ME OFF!!!! Worthless FUCK SHITS!!! I hope a wolf piss on their PS3s…thumbs down giving bastards…

  95. FahKinSuPah:

    @Sega

Somehow it doesn’t surprise me that people would give you thumbs down lol

  96. phranctoast:

I’m trying to figure out how to give him a thumbs down on blorge. ;)
