PSN Award winners announced – NGP price discussed
As part of Sony’s Spring Fever Week, the company has included the winners of the recent PSN Gamers’ Choice Award, where gamers voted for their favorite titles. Also, Sony talks a little about NGP’s pricing strategy.
The NGP’s price has remained a mystery ever since Sony announced the device a few months back. In a recent interview with PSM3 [via CVG], Jim Ryan SCEE VP, hinted that the NGP won’t be as expensive as everyone is predicting.
The device packs everything you can imagine with the hardware capable of outputting current gen graphics. Most analysts are predicting that the device may be as high as $400 to $500.
Ryan stated that the NGP will be “affordable” and that the price will be kept down to target the device to a broader audience. He stated, "Sony’s ambitions when it comes to installed base are considerable, so we’re not talking about the ultra-rich.”
Sony has indicated that the company won’t make the same mistake it did with the PS3’s initial pricing.
In other news, Sony has finally revealed the winners of the PSN Gamers’ Choice Award along with the complete list of updates to the store, including a demo for Mortal Kombat.
Here are the games voted by the PS3 community:
PSN Gamers’ Choice Award Winners (Spring Fever Week #1)
- Best PS3 Game: Castle Crashers (50% discount for PlayStation Plus subscribers, ends 3/22)
- Best PSP Game: God of War: Ghost of Sparta (50% discount for PlayStation Plus subscribers, ends 3/22
- Best PSN Exclusive Game: Dead Nation (50% discount for PlayStation Plus subscribers, ends 3/22)
- Best Mini: Age of Zombies (50% discount for PlayStation Plus subscribers, ends 3/22)
I was pretty close with my predictions –
Best PS3 DL Game: Castle Crashers
Best PSP DL Game: Valkyria Chronicles II (GOW: Ghost of Sparta close behind)
Best PS3/PSP Mini: Age of Zombies
Best PSN Exclusive Game: Dead Nation (Joe Danger close behind)
Do you agree with the winners?

I wish I had held off buying Dead Nation now. I’ve barely even played it since I bought at full-price.

“Ryan stated that the NGP will be “affordable” and that the price will be kept down to target the device to a broader audience.”
When it comes to prices, I do not trust Sony at all. It took the PSP how many years to match the DS? The PSP Go– a system no one is buying– got a price cut for X-amount of days? Days???
Jury is still out though. If they can get them out for $200, the PSP2 will outsell the PS2 in 2 years.
But Sony’s idea of affordability is “What’s the competition’s price? OK, let’s sell $50 higher. What? It’s ONLY $50…”
Overpricing. It’s the Japanese mentality.

The NGP looks to be worth at least $350.
March 9th, 2011
My guess is £250 to £300. .not sure what that is in $ but probably not far off $350 to $400
I’d like to get one, as I spend over 4 hours a day on the train. . I could really do with a good portable.
I did think about the DS cause as it has Settlers, age of empires, populous etc. .but the dammed screen is just too small.

you can really expect the PSP2 to match the price of Nintendo’s handheld.
outdated specs vs specs a year (maybe 2) ahead of its time.
@Godless
That’s why I’m getting one.

Hey Guys, PAX East is this weekend.
Hopefully we hear more about Twisted Metal.
will Microsoft announce any hardcore games?
March 9th, 2011
Yeah, they will Roca. Halo? It is called the art of milking Halo until it can’t be milked anymore. Every game that Microsoft has is coming out on the Ps3 with the exception of Halo and Gears Of War.
March 9th, 2011
Will they announce it this weekend or save it for E3?
they can’t afford to announce their games early in the year as they don’t have enough games for E3.

Btw my taxes are not what I expected. I thought I owed +$800 and I’m getting back that. So I’m getting my Ipad2 instead of the game.

“Overpricing. It’s the Japanese mentality.”
Roca is right cap, 3DS and NGP are totally different product designs, the former with “affordable components” and the other with cutting edge components that cost more. 3DS will still outsell NGP, but Sony has their target demographic and the performance of the machine will justify the more expensive price.

The software sells the DS. It is made for casual and kids.
Psp games take a long time to play like consol games. DS games are more like phone games.
