PlayStation Phone launch details revealed
Sony recently detailed the launch information for the PlayStation phone or Xperia Play. The phone will come with six preloaded games and a huge library of games available via the PlayStation Suite.
The PlayStation Suite is an application on the PS Phone that allows gamers to browse and download legacy PSOne games as well as newly developed games for the suite. Upon launch Sony revealed that there will be 50 games that will be available for download in the suite.

PlayStation Suite
In addition to the large selection of launch titles, the PS Phone will come preloaded with Crash Bandicoot, Tetris, Star Battalion, Bruce Lee: Dragon Warriors, FIFA 10 and The Sims 3.
Additionally, Havok recently announced that its engine will be ported over so that developers can take advantage of it on the PS Phone.

Sony Ericsson boss, David Hilton revealed via MCV, that the phone will be getting the “biggest marketing campaign” leveraged by the company. The company also revealed that the device will launch Thursday, March 31.

Hey, roca, tell us all about this when you get it.
I’m keeping my iPhone and getting the NGP.
March 16th, 2011
So this plays legacy ps1 games. Not psp games downloaded? So now we have the psp which uses umd, psp go which uses download media, ps phone which doesn’t play psp games. And then we will have the ngp (or what ever it ends up being called) which will play different games again.
The psp range is become very fragmented. I think the psp phone should have been at least psp go compatible. I think the psp phone was a good idea maybe 3 years ago before Android and iToy began moving into the gaming arena. I think dedicated portable games consoles will still be dominant over smart phones for a few years yet, but I don’t think this will do all that great as its a new proprietary format.

“The psp range is become very fragmented. ”
Coming from a Nintendo fan, I must assume you know what you’re talking about.
“I think dedicated portable games consoles will still be dominant over smart phones for a few years yet, but I don’t think this will do all that great as its a new proprietary format”
I agree, you can’t compare a 3DS or NGP to phones for games, and I just can’t see someone who is not strictly casual with games be willing to not go with either the NGP or 3DS.
I also don’t see this one phone as creating a new proprietary format.
March 16th, 2011
I might have to wait a long time before I get one of this. The phone does not have a release date in US and it be exclusive to Verizon when it lunches.
I really don’t care about downloadable PS1 & PSP games (unless I can transfer the ones I own), FF7, FF8 & FF9 could the only ones that I would actually be interested in playing…other than that I would look forward to new Xperia Play (PS Suite) games.
March 16th, 2011
@CarlB
I really hope it supports trophies.
March 16th, 2011
I hope it does too, then they could start patching all my favorite older games with them also and I could play them on my NGP.
March 16th, 2011
I want the NGP. Not this one. But I will be going to Futureshop to give this thing a go. I want to see how the analog sticks work.
March 16th, 2011
are you getting the 3DS? or did you already get it since you’re in Japan?
March 16th, 2011
@dipshit_DS
You are right, Nintendo doesn’t have 50 versions of the DS and GB.
March 16th, 2011
Andrew_DoubleShit once again failing his troll attemp and just coming off as a hypocrite. Fragmented? LMFAO which version of the GameBoy do you have? lol
March 16th, 2011
@ncaissie
I get what Andrew was trying to say there. I think your just being blinded by your fanboyism.
March 16th, 2011
@fahk
Why? There is a new DS every 4 months. So Sony adding Gaming buttons to a dam phone is not wrong.
The PSP go was a stupid move but it’s obvious they were testing the DD only market so they could decide what format to use on the NGP. The NGP is NEXT GEN. The DS lite, DSi and DSi XL where not next GEN. So don’t give me this blind fanboy BS. Sony has had the Ericson for a long time. They are simply bringing it up to tade with the phone gamers like CarlB.
If anything Andrew and you are being Blind fanboys.
March 16th, 2011
My only issue with this phone, is…it’s 2011 now. Smart phones have exceeded the PSP in raw power and graphical abilities. Why can’t this phone play PS2 like games instead of PSOne?
March 16th, 2011
Sony has the PS3 for the Home console market.
Sony has the PSP(Go) (soon NGP) for the Handheld market.
Sony has the Xperia Play for the Cell phone market.
If that is confusing to you then you have bigger problems then deciding which gaming platform to chose.
Stop confusing the phone with a fucking handheld. That is just stupid. I didn’t see you bitching when MS put Live on the Windows phone.
Nintendo just has a handheld.
MS just has the phone.
Sony has both so fucking what?
March 16th, 2011
I don’t think the smart phone has passed the PSP phranc. The PS games are typically 1-2GB in size. The Iphone games are at the most 100MB. Being a dev I doubt they are the past the PSP.
March 16th, 2011
@ncaissie
Andrew was clearly talking about how Sony is changing everything up with the PSP and the games it can play.
Like how PSP Go is still a PSP but you can’t play UMDs on it.
Then this PS Phone won’t even allow you to play Go Games.
And who knows if the NGP will allow you to play the PSP go games either?
Its not like Nintendo put out a new version of the DS that makes you download the games and doesn’t have a cartridge slot.
Nintendo only upgraded the system, which is a smart move, and didn’t remove functionality (unlike the PSP Go)
March 16th, 2011
@Phranc
most PS2 games are a few GBs in size. The NGP could probably could probably handle PS2 games with its new format.
PSP Phone will probably get good looking games built specifically for the device. Many ppl think you will be stuck playing PS1 games only.
@FahKin
The GB/DS market is the most fragmented one. At least with the PSPGo you could easily transfer you downloadble PSP games to a regular PSP but on the DS your downloadable games are attached to a single device.
Guitar Hero games cannot be played on a DSi or DSi XL because it needs the GBA port for the colored-button add-on
March 16th, 2011
IT IS NOT A PSP! Jesus! Its a fucking phone. The only change they did to the PSP was the Go and like I said they tested the water for the NGP. It’s common sense.
March 16th, 2011
“Like how PSP Go is still a PSP but you can’t play UMDs on it”
PSP Go was mainly for non-PSP owners who don’t like to carry around UMDs. If you are a PSP owner there was no reason to own a PSP Go as it didn’t featured anything new that the PSP don’t already have.
“Then this PS Phone won’t even allow you to play Go Games.
And who knows if the NGP will allow you to play the PSP go games either?”
The GBA didn’t allow you to play GB Color games and the DSi does not allow you to play GBA games… also the DS downloadable games cannot be transfered, so you would have to buy the game again if you buy a new DS or upgrade to a new DS version.
March 16th, 2011
But Sony if Fragmented not Nintendo. LMAO
March 16th, 2011
if = is
March 16th, 2011
@Roca
“The GBA didn’t allow you to play GB Color games and the DSi does not allow you to play GBA games”
You can play GB Color games on a GBA.
Being able to play GBA games on a DS was just a bonus of having a DS, like being able to play GB and GBC games on a GBA. The DSi is a complete upgrade to the DS, that adds alot more functionality to the device than just playing games.
March 16th, 2011
ncaissie – “IT IS NOT A PSP”
ncaissie is right. The device is not even called PSP Phone or anything related to PSP. The official name for the this device is Xperia Play.
FahKin – “Nintendo only upgraded the system, which is a smart move, and didn’t remove functionality (unlike the PSP Go)”
Just like the Xbox and the X360…Microsoft built a new system (X360) and remove the HHD (made it optional). Then they also stop including HD cable, headsets and ethernet cable on newer versions of the 360.
March 16th, 2011
@Roca
Like the PS3 comes with Component or HDMI cables? LMAO. Sony could at least have included component with the PS3 since it is geared for HD and not SD. But NO it comes with legacy RCA cables LMAO. What a joke.
To make matters worse they charge $30 for the component cables.
The 360 still comes with component cables.
I don’t really agree with MS making the HDD optional but they did it because they wanted to be able to offer more affordable options for the 360. Silly move but it probably hasn’t hurt MS.
Of course Sony could also have included a longer USB cable with it too LMAO. 4 foot doesn’t go very far lol. And as cheap as USB cables are $ony could have easily included a 10 foot cable.
The PS3 never came with a headset did it?
I would imagine most people have ethernet cables by now, not to mention the 360S has wi-fi built in. More people are running wirelessly now than 5 years ago and the number increases every year.
Remember, you wanted to go there
March 16th, 2011
FahKin – “Nintendo only upgraded the system, which is a smart move, and didn’t remove functionality (unlike the PSP Go)”
Like I said they wanted to know if the public was ready for DD which I have said many times that they are not.
The GBC was an update to the GB. The GBA was an update to the GBC. The DS was next gen.
The DS lite was and update to the DS. The DSi was an update to the DS lite. The DS XL was an update to the DSi. The 3DS is (Supposed to be) next Gen for the DS.
Looking at some game videos on youtube the 3DS doesn’t look like a very big leap if any. It looks like a DS with 3D.
March 16th, 2011
“Sony could at least have included component with the PS3 since it is geared for HD and not SD. But NO it comes with legacy RCA cables LMAO. What a joke.”
LOL it doesn’t mater. A lot of people have SD TVs. The HDMI cables are standard so you can buy them anywhere. The SD cable is specific to the PS3 (and PS2?) and you would be stuck paying Sony prices for it. They should include both but that is another thing.
March 16th, 2011
Ubisoft hints at NGP’s possible price.
$250-No 3G
$350-with 3G

March 16th, 2011
@Fahkin
“The 360 still comes with component cables”
I said the 360 don’t come with HD cables anymore. component cable are HD cable…. I hope you learned something today.
Sony never included HD cable like MS did at one point but then decided to make their consumer pay for it – just like they have to pay for everything that makes the 360 a more complete system.
FahKin – “To make matters worse they charge $30 for the component cables”
To make matters worse MS charge for transfer cable (they were free before), $100 for Wifi add-on, over $100 for a HDD upgrade, $60 for online play and at one point the power cable was going for $100 as well. They also charge $20 the charging cable and the battery and a HD movie player will cost an extra $200…Im pretty sure everyone would rather pay the extra $30 for HD cable than pay over $400 worth of updagrades and add-ons.
FahKin – “Of course Sony could also have included a longer USB cable with it too LMAO”
Microsoft could have included HDMI port, optical port, free online and charging cables with it as well LMAO…. do you really want to keep this going?
“The PS3 never came with a headset did it?”
The 360 never came with free online? which one is cheaper? Hopefully are better at math than the average 360 users.
FahKin – “would imagine most people have ethernet cables by now”
I would imagine most ppl have usb cable (but it doesn’t matter Sony includes them anyways). Microsoft doesn even include batteries.
FahKin – “not to mention the 360S has wi-fi built in. More people are running wirelessly”
The 360S is 8months old, so for 4+ years if 360 owners wanted to do wireless they would’ve had to bend over and fork $100 for add-on…then pay $60 for online play – that’s half of a PS3 right there.
PS: Remember, you wanted to go there
March 16th, 2011
If that’s the case, I’ll probably hold off until after the first price drop. $200 sounds pretty reasonable.
March 16th, 2011
Considering how cheap cables can be, they should have never been charging $30 for component.
“The 360 still comes with component cables.”
I haven’t been able to find one with component cables anymore. All I see is composite.
I would have liked if a new PS3 controller at least came with another USB wire. That would be nice.
It’s good that MS added WiFi, but before that…..geeze.. $90 peripheral.. crazy.
One of the best things MS did to the console, was add USB drive support for the installation of games.
March 16th, 2011
I would pay $350 for the NGP Phranc.
March 16th, 2011
What do you think is going to happen to Stores like EB games and Micro play when the consoles and handhelds go strictly DD?
I think it will put a lot of people out of work and we will pay through the nose for games. (I will start pirating games)
March 16th, 2011
@Phranc
$250 for the non-3G model is a great price. You get a true next-gen portable gaming devie for the same price as a 3DS.
I would pay $350 as well for the 3G as I would most likely play the NGP on the go…whenever I’m home I play PS3.
March 16th, 2011
The Xbox360 only comes with conposite cables.
March 16th, 2011
I Love having Internet on the go with my iphone. I can’t wait to get it on the Ipad. I’m a huge gadget nut. I hope the NGP is out before Christmas.
March 16th, 2011
E3 should be interesting this year it’s going to have a new next-gen gaming hardware.
March 16th, 2011
Sounds pretty good. If that’s the price I may be getting one for my long train rides.
March 16th, 2011
@Phranc
train rides in NY last can last an eternity.
I went to NY this past weekend I took the subway from the airport (JFK) to uptown Manhanttan that lasted almost 2 hours.
Then on my way back to the airport I almost lost my flight because E train never showed up and no one knew what the F* was going on… I ended taking a $70 from 42st to JFK.
March 16th, 2011
You should have taken the air train to Jamaica and then the LIRR to Penn. It may cost around $10 total.
March 16th, 2011
JFK to Jamaica via Airtrain-10 minutes $5
Jamaica to Penn- 15 minutes-$6.25 or &8.75 depending on peak or off peak.
Walk to 42nd street from Penn. 10 minutes Free.
March 16th, 2011
@ncaissie
I’m a gadget freat too. I normally buy a new TV once every 2 years. I’m looking at all the options for my next TV purchase. Right now my choses are a Sony top of the line Bravia with Google TV and Qriocity integrated and a High-End Vizio with comes with OnLive built-in.
I just pre-ordered Digital Camara at SonySyle.com. The mega-zoom Cyber-shot HX100V – http://goo.gl/6kYsn
For Tablet, I’m waiting for either the LG Slate or the Samsung Galaxy Tab II (both powered by Android 3.0)
PSP2′s specs would make any gadget freak go crazy about it…
March 16th, 2011
@Phranc
it seems like no one in NY knows the faster way to get to JFK. When arrived at the airport I was told to take the air train to howard beach then take the A train all the way Manhattan – that was a long ass ride.
going back to the airport I was told to take the A train to 42st and then hop on the E train to Jamaica/air train….but the E train was a no show that day.
oh yeah, public transportation in NY cost almost twice as much as they do here in Boston.
March 16th, 2011
Nice. I picked up one like this for Amandas Birthday the year before last. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HDR-XR550V-Definition-Handycam-Camcorder/dp/B0031RGL1Q/ref=sr_ob_19?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1300302336&sr=1-19
March 16th, 2011
The cheapest way is airtrain to Jamaica, then take E train from there to 42nd street. It’s longer than taking the LIRR but cheaper.
March 16th, 2011
Yeah.. In the situation you were in, I would have walked from 42nd st to 34th st Penn Station, taken the LIRR on any branch East except the Port Washington branch (all the rest stop at Jamaica), and gone to the airport from there.
I very rarely take the subway unless I’m in Manhattan.
March 16th, 2011
@Phranc
what’s the LIRR?
@ncaissie
That camcorder is a beast – it has some of the high-end specs as the camara I’m getting, like the G-lens, the “Exmor R” CMOS sensor & full 1080p recording (with the ability to take shots while recording).. did you pay over a grand for it?
March 16th, 2011
It takes great movies and Pics. It has GPS built in also.
I’m no home movie buff but she loves it.
With the extra warranty she paid over 2Gs. It was the only 240GB model in Ottawa.
March 16th, 2011
“she paid over 2Gs”
WTF… and you let her give you crap about buying new release games?
March 16th, 2011
This is the exact model.
Not sure what the difference is between the 550v and 520v is. Probably Canada vs the US?
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-HDR-XR520V-Handycam-First-Impressions-Camcorder-Review.htm
March 16th, 2011
LMAO she just has a way to make me feel guilty. LOL
That’s why I don’t have a problem spending 1G on an Iphone and 1G on the Ipad.
I also let her spent $1800 on her still camera. It’s not a Sony. She got a Sony at first but for some reason took it back and got (I think) a Panasonic.
March 16th, 2011
You should spend at least 3 grands on games this year (PSP2 not included
) and she can’t say anything.
March 16th, 2011
LOL I probably feel guilt because I’m cheep.
But she does say shit like “Do you really need that?” HAHA
March 16th, 2011
” also let her spent $1800 on her still camera”
is that a DSLR camara? can you zoom in all the way to the moon?
March 16th, 2011
The ipad is kind of for my birthday and Xmas.
I told them not to get me much because I planed to buy an Ipad.
March 16th, 2011
Not sure. I’ll look at the model tonight.
I was going to get KZ3 this week but I think I’ll wait because I want the HDMI cable for the Ipad 2.
Carl are you staying in Japan? I think I would be getting as far away as possible. I’m surprised they didn’t get you guys involved in the rescue. Are you there for the army or personal?
March 16th, 2011
“But she does say shit like “Do you really need that?”
I’d say something like – “hell yeeeah!!”
then when she’s buying shoes, makeup and purses you should said “Do you really need that?”
I can spend alot of money on gadgets and gaming because now that I’m have a serious relationship with my girl and don’t go out as much as I used to. Since I don’t spend money on the streets anymore I use that to buy w.e I want.
March 16th, 2011
CarlB is the U.S. Marines… he’s stationed there for like 2 years I believe.
March 16th, 2011
I can already see ncaissie not playing KZ3 and other AAA games to play Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja instead…
March 16th, 2011
That’s good until you have kids.
I have $thousands in gas powered RC planes and Helis. It was put on hold after I had kids. Games are all I can do lately.
March 16th, 2011
LOL fuck angry birds. I may try it though LOL
March 16th, 2011
^ LOL….ncaissie is going CAD-sual on us..

This is the camera. It’s about 2 1/2 to 3 years old now.
March 16th, 2011
NGP aka PSP2 This looks really tempting to buy but I’m buying 2 NGP/PSP2.
I wish PSP2 gets 4G and and no bigger media cartridges. My only disappointment in PSP2 is the cartridges and also the low memory. PSP2 needed Mini Blu-ray Disc they hold 7GB.

Street fighter 4 on the iPhone is 99 cents this week.
All money made goes to help out Japan.
So buy it dam you!
March 16th, 2011
Why don’t you buy 6 NGPs you fucking retard?
You are so pathetic Ivan.
March 16th, 2011
Just been playing the Crysis 2 multiplayer demo and I have to say I am EXTREMELY dissapointed! All this hype about how great the game looks is total bollocks! It looks nowhere near as good as Killzone 3 or Killzone 2 for that matter! Whoever say it’s the best looking console game ever is obviously living on a unrealistic xbot fanboy dream.
March 16th, 2011
This game could of looked great if they didn’t have to limit the PS3 version so it’s identical to the 360. The Xbox is really holding back multiplat titles lately.
March 17th, 2011
LMAO @ OS
March 17th, 2011
The Shitbox has always held back multiplats. FF13 anyone?
March 17th, 2011
“are you getting the 3DS? or did you already get it since you’re in Japan?”
No, I’m not touching it simply because they have refused implementation of a trophy/achievement system. The coins they have are not even close, and it’s launch lineup looks relatively weak.
“I don’t think the smart phone has passed the PSP phranc. The PS games are typically 1-2GB in size. The Iphone games are at the most 100MB. Being a dev I doubt they are the past the PSP.”
I agree with phranc. Games like Infinity Blade (548MB), Skies of Glory(14MB) , and Real Racing 2 HD are surpassing similar genre PSP titles in graphical detail, regardless of their file size.
Resolution of the devices also come into play:
PSP: 480×272
iPhone: 960×640
Now this phone doesn’t seem like it’s going to be even capable of PSP quality games (which is kind of disappointing because that device is 6 years old now and this phone is brand new) let alone top smartphone games, so, the key attraction for this phone isn’t going to be power but a higher quality game density, in gameplay, control, and graphics overall. It certainly seems to be a step up from N-Gage, and as far as control goes, a step up from iPhone.
“Carl are you staying in Japan? I think I would be getting as far away as possible. I’m surprised they didn’t get you guys involved in the rescue. Are you there for the army or personal?”
Staying here until late this year. We have plenty enough ships and bases on mainland to give the Japanese aid. Okinawa is rather far away from it all. Marine Corps.
March 18th, 2011
“I agree with phranc.”
Then you are both wrong. The look of the game may be a bit better but they suffer from shitty play. Look at infinity blade, it looks good but is a stupid on rails slash game. Just like Kinect it is too limited and has NO potential.
March 18th, 2011
Kinect has potential of being more limited
March 18th, 2011
“Then you are both wrong… The look of the game may be a bit better”
Then we are both right, because that was the crux of our argument, i.e. “raw power, graphical abilities… graphic detail”, and I already gave control to PSP, but graphics to iOS.
How long have you been playing Infinity Blade?
March 18th, 2011
And you’re talking shit about Infinity Blade while playing Bubble Trouble? Classic.
March 18th, 2011
“And you’re talking shit about Infinity Blade while playing Bubble Trouble? Classic.”
lmao… I was scratching my head when I saw that lol
March 19th, 2011
@roca & carl
Don’t mock nc for playing Bubble Trouble – it’s the only game he can complete without the auto-aim on.
March 21st, 2011
“How long have you been playing Infinity Blade?”
I don’t need to. I watch many youtube game play videos and read some reviews. I had hopes for that game when I seen the commercial.
March 21st, 2011
“And you’re talking shit about Infinity Blade while playing Bubble Trouble? Classic.”
I (and my kids who are 5-7) try all the games that come with PSN+. So what?
