Guerrilla gone mad – offering free maps and features for Killzone 3
It’s pure insanity as Guerrilla Games plans on handing out new features and map packs for free. The developer recently revealed that Steel Rain will be hitting the PlayStation Store in the U.S. next week as well as some new features soon.
The Steel Rain map pack dropped on the European PlayStation Store earlier today.
As detailed by Guerrilla Games:
Steel Rain consists of two explosive new multiplayer maps inspired by locations from the single player campaign: Junkyard, a Guerrilla Warfare map which sees Jetpacks and Exoskeletons clashing in a rain-drenched junk processing facility; and Stahl Arms, a uniquely styled Warzone map set on the factory floor of one of Helghan’s largest weapons manufacturing plants.
According to GG, PlayStation Plus members get to pick up the map pack for free during the first month (normally €4,99 EU and $4.99 US). The map pack will drop on the US PSN Store next Tuesday on the 12th along with the regular updates.
In addition, GG also outlined plans to provide a new feature for the multiplayer mode, which will allow users to craft custom games.
Details of the Custom Game feature:
Explanation of Custom Games
Custom Games will be rolled out in 2 patches. This one (1.07) and a future patch. We don’t know when this will be yet.
PHASE ONE
Phase One of Custom Games gives players the option to create unranked games with the choice of:
- Game Mode
- Map
- Missions (Warzone only)
- Mission Time (Warzone only)
- Invite Squad members
- Invite Enemy Squad Leader
This gives players the ability to create private matches, and playing with and against friends or a rival clan for instance. People who don’t get an invite to these games won’t be able to join through matchmaking.
PHASE TWO
We still need to spec this out, so this is subject to change, but we are looking to add the options of choosing:
- More configuration options for missions in Warzone and Operations
- Adjustable kill count for Guerrilla Warfare
- Configurable Unlocks (choose which one you want to play with)
- Configurable Classes (choose which one you want to play with)
- Configurable Weapons, Abilities, Skills, Ribbons
- Friendly Fire On/Off
- Brutal Melee On/Off
Since the launch of Killzone 3, GG has released two major patch updates with another on the way. As I stated in our review of Killzone 3, GG has been adamant about supporting the community and refining the multiplayer mode. While some developers may take months to release a single patch to fix a major issue, GG has released several patches refining minor issues and even adding significant features.
Check out our review of Killzone 3 to see why this is a game other developers should take a hard look at.

Quick write a free realms article so we can have four articles in a row with the word free.

lol @ people who pay $15 for 4 COD maps.

“According to GG, PlayStation Plus members get to pick up the map pack for free during the first month (normally €4,99 EU and $4.99 US). ”
Well technically it’s not free then
April 7th, 2011
How is it ‘technically’ not free? I never paid for it when I downloaded it and I have EASILY downloaded free content worth more than the price of a subscription already.
Dw Fahk, I’m sure the 3rd60 will do something like this one day(!)
April 7th, 2011
Sure it’s free. You pay $4.99 for Plus anyway, and this cost $4.99 without it.
It wouldn’t be free unless you completely dismiss every other feature that Plus provides this month.
April 7th, 2011
How much does plus cost? (for 1 year)
April 7th, 2011
So guess everything gold members get free is technically not free either.
I don’t have kz 3 yet but I will download it for when I do.
April 7th, 2011
@godless. Less than gold
April 7th, 2011
@oldschool
Technically its not free cause you only get it free if your a plus member. Otherwise you have to pay for it.
@ncaissie
We all know nothing is free with Gold.
Although a few months ago 2 games were released on XBLA that were completely free to everyone, Gold or Silver.
April 7th, 2011
’cause you only get it free if your a plus member’
And I am a Plus member, so technically and obviously it’s free to me and all other members. We’re not on about non members.
Still, it sucks the 3rd60 charges you just to use your own internet(‘Oh no he di’nt’) lol.

“Still, it sucks the 3rd60 charges you just to use your own internet(‘Oh no he di’nt’) lol.”
Thats the price of a better network I guess huh? Since we all know that while you can play for free on a PS3, Xbox Live is better
April 7th, 2011
P2P is better?
Lmao oh, ok
April 7th, 2011
Well it better be better if they’re charging you to use your own internet!!!
Still, I’d rather have something that is free over something that is only SLIGHTLY better with no exclusives.
April 7th, 2011
Put it this way, I’ve had my 3rd60 since the day of release and I have NEVER paid for a subscription. I’ve used some of the vouchers I get when I buy a game, the 30 day trials but I would never pay to use my own internet. Seems a bit brain dead to me.

It’s not better. Lol ever did a pc LAN party? The host pc always has an unfair advantage.

Gold LIVE is plagued by the same exact problems that the PSN has read:
MW 2 cheaters/hacks
Black Ops….
On top of that, look at the whole Gears 2 fiasco, along with Halo…
The same can’t be said about Sonys exclusives…some but not as many problems as the 360…
But even if they have the same problems….here’s the difference:
59.99 is what ms is charging you for the same exact problems psn has…so I don’t see your point in saying “gold live is better than psn”…
Adding insult to injury, here’s a fun lil tidbit:
Out of 42 million 360 tards, only half are connectes to LIVE at all….that would be 21 milliion LIVE users….out of 21 million, HALF are Gold subs…that’s 10.5 million active online suckers….1/4 of the 360 community are tards…
Out of 43 million psn users….over 40 million are active online on psn….
The proof of which is better is in the pudding

“Out of 43 million psn users….over 40 million are active online on psn….
The proof of which is better is in the pudding”
That’s not a fair comparison of quality jojo. Fair enough if they both cost the same amount of money but PSN is free – that is why there are more active users.
April 8th, 2011
Dans
But it is a fair argument, as that is the point of the comparison, which service is better?
That is the best and only way to properly compare both…who has more active users….10million users vs 40…..which model is better…the free one of course..
Remember, ms fanbous are usually the first to bark up a storm about how great gold is and how they are gladly happy paying for a superior service….I’m here to tell them, they are the retarded minority, not only amongst their own community, 1/4 of the 360 install base, but among the most retarded in the industry..pc/ps3/wii owners all get to enjoy free online play….
.feature for feature, psn/psn+ offers much much more than live/gold do…there’s minimal difference is what I’m getting at, so why the cost..pure greed, look if LIVE Gold was as good as MS and other Gold members say it is, more people would be on itx including myself…
.but the fact is, there is nothing on Gold that justifies the price…
- servers: they are just as bad as psn serversz at times even worse…
-Features: cross game chat…alone is not worth $60…
- value: what value? Halo 2 servers were shut down….chalking it up to “server costs”..hmmm then why can I still play the orignal socom online…I don’t see sony closing down servers due to server costs..and they don’t charge us a dime to play on said servers…
Dans, I admit though, live has some prettt nifty features, specifically the all games have demos/previews, that’s a nice feature…so I’m not anti-LIVE…I’m anti-Gold and them charging to play online..
April 8th, 2011
Free my ass they took that shit off and now they claim is free. Well at least they kept the deleted content free of charge. But I don’t like K3 much.
April 9th, 2011
The fact that it is FREE makes it a better service. Live offers nothing but cross game chat which is nothing. Notice CAD is MIA?
April 9th, 2011
Gold = PSN – cross game chat.
PSN+ blows gold out of the water.
To tell the truth I’m shocked that MS doesn’t make the achievements a gold thing.
April 9th, 2011
LMAO if they did you idiots would say it’s only fair.
April 10th, 2011
No matter how you look at it, the DLC is free.
PSN+ is $50/year but just within the first 2 month users received over $50 worth of content. Right of the bat you get a subscribtion of Qore which is $25/year (separate).
April 12th, 2011
I’m sick to shit of PS3 fanboys going on about PSN being better because it’s free.
Yes “free” is good, this does not make the package better..only free-er
taking the chat stuff out of it, that really is the least of my concerns with PSN
I have had my xbox for 3 years now and can count on 1 hand the number of times I have had problems connecting to live and playing online games.
I have had my PS3 for around half that time, and I can say with 100% conviction that I have had more issues in the last 2 weeks with PSN than I have ever had with Live. .
These issues range form just not being able to connect to getting kicked out while using vidzone, iplayer etc or just plane not being able to connect to a multiplayer game or getting dumped mid game for no apparent reason. I could not begin to estimate the number of times over the last year it has given problems. .it’s in the hundreds
I have seen me play Grid on live for 5 hours solid and not ever get kicked dropped or whatever, same with split second, maybe for 2 hours or so at a time. .with the PS3 I’m lucky if I can get 2 races before getting dropped, usually when your in first place on the last lap
PSN sucks shit until they get it running like live I will never pay for it.. .why the fuck would I pay for such a half arsed service.
and don’t give me the “it’s you broadband” crap, because the 360 works like a dream on the same line.
on a similar note. .my PS3 crashes all the time, not in games, but when using the various apps, iplayer etc..I would guess my PS3 crashes at least twice every night I use it (which is most nights) again I can tell you exactly how many times my older xbox has crashed since the day I bought it. .3 times, all when playing Viva piñata. .my new one has never ever crashed . not once.
this is not fanboyism. .this is just the way it is. .and despite it, I still like the PS3 and I still think PSN is getting better all the time. .but please STFU with the “PSN is better” bullshit
April 12th, 2011
You don’t need to pay for PSN becuase PSN is free.

Roca, that link is from like 4 years ago??
that pretty much says it all. .
live is a reliable service, and I don’t mind paying for it to be that way. if it were like PSN I would have stopped paying and asked for my money back years ago
If PSN were to be pay only then I’d stump up, and so long as it was reliable, I’d accept it..if however I had to pay for PSN the way it is now I’d be well pissed off, and with good reason.
April 12th, 2011
I haven’t had any issues with PSN other than last Monday when Anonymous were attacking the network.
Seems that only xbots have issues on PSN – go figure.
