PS3 Portal 2 the definitive version to get – Q&A unveiled
With the release date for Portal 2 approaching next week, Valve has started to reveal more information around the built in Steam feature for the PS3 version of the game. From the looks of it Valve is incorporating many of the community features into the PS3 version.
Earlier today Valve released a new Q&A page on the official Steam Powered site. The page is titled – Portal 2 and Steam on PlayStation 3.
The page answers various questions such as how to access Steam on the PS3, and what are the features. The page also shows users how to link their PSN ID to their Steam ID. In addition, the page outlines how to redeem a free copy of the Portal 2 PC game.
To access Steam on the PS3 you simply press the SELECT button to access the menu, which looks strikingly similar to the PC version. Once you pull up the overlay, which runs in the background like the XMB, gamers can chat with other players; see friends, achievements and news.
This is some pretty cool stuff Valve has implemented on the PS3 version of the game as the essence of Steam has been integrated seamlessly into Portal 2 as a secondary sub-community within the PSN service.
In addition to the cross-platform (PC & PS3) chat and co-op play, the Steam cloud save feature is nice as well. This allows gamers who pickup the PS3 version, and install the free PC version on a laptop to continue where they left off on the go as well.
Portal 2 features an extensive single player campaign and a separate online co-op campaign. The game is set to launch next week April 19 in the U.S. and April 21 across Europe.

This is gonna be the first PS3 game I’ve bought in a while, I’ll probably play through on the PC first and then save the PS3 one for when I feel a bit lazy. I really hope Valve implement this in future, being able to play on multiple platforms with one version is excellent. The PS3 version of steam looks pretty good too, I want to here more about the “big screen” mode that steam is getting, I imagine the UI has some similarities between that of the console one.

I’m not sure about this game, I need to look into it a bit more.
The steam thing looks good, maybe Sony will get there fingers out of the butts and try and implement some of what steam does on there current UI.
I’m not sure having a version steam on the PS3 will suddenly allow PS3 owners to get there hands on cheap games, because despite you guys constantly saying how open the PS3 is, Sony will still have the say on exactly what is allowed on steam and probably a large say in how much it will cost too.
Steam will only ever be as good a Sony will allow it to be, and judging by some of there current controlling policies they could be the huge thorn in its side.
I have no faith is Sony allowing steam to be all it could be, because it’s a direct threat to the somewhat shoddy effort that is “Sony store”

I don’t see evil Sony holding back valve like you seem to see. Those games on steam are programmer for the PC. Of course you can’t get them on ps3.
If you read more about steam integration you’d see it’s more for updates then game sales on the ps3.

Godless, Steam is already well established in the PC & Mac market as one of the biggest providers of games, so how Sony treat it will have little impact on them. Only time will tell whether it will also be able to establish a foothold in the console market.

I have a steam account on the PC, and have bought a couple of games via it
I like the buddies system and would compare it to M$’ Live system for chat and gaming, I would love to see it integrated to the PS3 front end somehow, as it would be so much better than the excising system.
I fear that what we will have, is little more than a launching app for the portal game itself, and maybe any further games they do, which is all good and well, but it’s hardly going to be Steam as we know it.
That’s what I was trying to say.

Get someone who has never used a PS3 to try and do something on it. (play a movie, disk or of external drive or streaming, view images, play music.what ever, then get the same person to try the same thing on the Xbox. .you will see that the Xbox is way more user friendly than the PS3, and it doesn’t crash between applications.
Now before you launch into a “The PS3 can do more things” I don’t care, that doesn’t mean it’s allowed to be any less user friendly. .My TV has a better GUI than the PS3

what really is a joke is you trying to say it’s a bad UI when the XMB is an award winning UI – which is not used on many Sony divices becuase of its simplicity and easy navigation design.
Microsoft tried to copied with its bloated and ad-fest NXE UI. It’s pretty much the XMB but instead of being vertical is sideways with slices & fancy huge icons that are layers deep and cofusing. I bet that won’t win any awards anytime soon.

To be honest I think Valve have had to do a lot of back tracking. Due to this console gen being longer than previous gens with the longevity of games now via DLC and other economic factors I’m pretty sure when Valve first shat all over the PS3 they didn’t think in 2011 there would still be no sign of a new console from either of the big 3.

I think Godless is just referring to the simplicity of the performance of the Xbox360 vs the Ps3. Downloads are much quicker on Xbox360, you don’t have to constantly install games to the hardrive on Xbox360 before you can play games, and the Xbox360 doesn’t freeze up as much as the Ps3 does.

The PS3 only freezes because the shit browser. I’ve never had a qualm with the XMB outside a game. One thing I will say is better on Xbox, is the speed at which it handles WITHIN a game. You try to hit the PS home button whilst playing SSF4, you can just say goodbye to half your health. That shit takes forever to pop up and forever to go away. On Xbox, it’s the same speed, in or out of a game.
Out of a game, PS3 XMB is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay faster than NXE. And it doesn’t randomly freeze– you have to use the browser to experience a PS3 freeze.
But hey. At least it has one

Technically Oldy, Nolan’s films are world films. Both Batman films and Inception are American produced and for the most part uses American actors, aside Bale (English), Tom Hardy (English), Michael Caine (very Cockney English lol), Ellen Page (Canadian), Marion Cotillard (French), Cilian Murphy and Liam Neeson (both Irish), Gary Oldman ( my fellow Londoner) and Ken Watanabe (Japanese).
There are a handful of English actors, and my favourite is Tom Hardy

But those films are from the mind of Nolan and his brother, he created the stories(especially Inception), they’re his films, sure they are American paid for but the Imagination of it comes from English writters(except Goyer on DK) and Director. Most of the cast are mainly English, well a majority. Most people class Nolan films as British, even Memento and Insomnia.
For some reason I knew you would disagree Bird lol. Dark Knight would be shit without the Nolan brothers, or definitely not as good and Inception would not exist.

Just going back to blu rays
I’m not buying any more Blu ray till they cost the same or less than a DVD
the last couple of blu rays I got 300 & Planet earth are no better than the DVDs, in fact I would go so far as to say in some shots the effect of low frame rate causes a slight judder to be noticeable on panning shots.
I’ve never really pushed this matter because you guys always sarcastically make the “oh yeah and up scaling is as good as true 1080″ remark, but the truth is in many cases it actually is better.
When my system upscales it does it 1080 @50hz blu ray is 1080 @24Hz and both 300 & Planet Earth (stunning documentary with some of the best camera work you will ever witness) you can see blu ray falling shot due to the low refresh rate
Add to that, the FACT that in both films there is no noticeable difference in image quality, other than the DVD being smother for panning shots.
I guess this is why games stick to higher frame rates and lower res, the result just looks better when there’s a lot moving onscreen
I truly think there’s a touch of the emperors new cloths going on with blu ray, with people unwilling to just say “well actually It’s just not that good sometimes”
As for XMB mine crashes a lot. .like I said, at least once a night if I’m using anything other than games. Vidzone iplayer and the browser are the worst culprits, but it also does it a lot when accessing my external drive.
My wife refuses to use the PS3 now because it has crashed on her every time she was using it to view photos,(I think 3 times each time me say, I was a fluke it shouldn’t do it again) and she won’t touch it now in case it breaks or it corrupts the photos, the Xbox, as never had any problems accessing the same drive.

I think my frustration with the PS3 has come to a head. .I had not logged onto the Xbox for over a week or so. and the constant crashing and stuttery game play and crammpy hands after 10 minutes had started to get to me.
feeling better now though, got some Xbox gaming in last night, and it was a crash free experience well kind of, I was playing blur so the only crashes were supposed to happen.
If only the PS3 were as stable as my beloved Xbox ;D

Not sure how old you are, but I’m guessing to young to remember what really happened when we had Vinyl, tapes and CDs for music.
The CD was the cheapest option after a few years as it was cheaper to mass produce, likewise the move to DVD from tape, once the ball got rolling the DVD was way cheaper to produce and the Tape cost more and had poorer quality and was abandoned in a flash
There is no reason BR should cost 1.5 to 2 times what the DVD costs, unless it’s triple play or something.. go ask you mommy. .maybe she’s old enough to know what actually happened. -

during that time the price of DVDs fell to the point that it was lower than the Tape, then in a very short space of time the tape was phased out, despite the fact that most people still had VHS recorders and not DVD players. .it’s all driven by profits of the corporations, if it cost then more to produce something they will drop support for it.

I don’t know about where you live but blu rays are about the same cost as dvd’s where I live. As far as picture quality goes, I recommend that you buy blu rays that have good picture quality. 300 was filmed in a specific grainy style and this style of movie does not translate over to the type of picture quality that you are looking for. If you want top picture quality, then you should buy movies like Tron Legacy, Dark Knight, I Robot, Avatar, and Troy. These are some examples of movies with excellent picture quality. If you can’t tell the difference in picture quality, then it means something is wrong.

I have Troy, Avatar, 300, the first 6 Harry Portter movies (which cost me $45, Bluray prices are sweet most of the time), Sherlock Holmes, Heat, Inception and about 50 others and I have yet to experience any judder with them. I fact, I was experiencing a few judders while watching BD, DVD, TV channels and even gaming when I switch to a 120hz TV and turning that feature off easily fix the issue.

based on your own link, most users came to the conclusions that the problem is not a PS3 issue. The issue is due to coverting 24hz into 60hz, 72hz, 120hz or higher.
DVD is so low res you that it doesnt even matter as spotting such small detail is impossible on DVDs no matter how much you upscale them.
Like I said, I’ve experienced some judder with my 120hz TV, it’s not just for Bluray movies but for gaming, HD TV channels and even netflix.
again, find me a site (not a forum) that can back up your “DVD better than Bluray” claim. until then you’re welcome to keep making a fool of yourself.

I’m not claiming the DVD is better than Blu ray
Only that when I watch certain blu ray movies, is see a judder effect in scenes where there is a lot of panning.(and this is not a good thing)
Now until today, I had never bothered to Google it, I figured it was just down to the 24FPS, and it was noticeable.
It now looks like I need to investigate what might be causing it, my TV says 24P when I start to play Blu ray movies on the PS3, sadly I sold the Samsung BR player when I got the new TV, figuring the PS3 will do, so I have nothing else to compare against for now.
My old TV didn’t support 24P, but downscaled to 720p @ 50hz when playing Blu ray and I can’t say I ever noticed a problem then
when I play DVD on my TV it switched to 1080 @50Hz and for me this looks better because it’s totally smooth, and the up scaling works really well. it is all but impossible to tell the difference in the 3 movies I have on both formats.
And yes I’m sad enough to have done the play then along side each other test, switching between Xbox and PS3 and trying to tell which was which. .Like I said I would bet good money none of you would be able to tell, unless it juddered, in which case you’d know it was blu ray

I have done BR side by side with the Hulk movie and I seen a big difference in quality.
Like twilight said the movie is only as good as how it is filmed. Why do you think the cut scenes in the GOW collections looked awful compared to the game play?
That said I don’t think it would look worse on BR than DVD. You are just making it up.

becuase the TV recognizes it as 24hz but it display them on the screen at a higher frame rate (maybe 60hz, 120hz, etc) – My 120hz TV says the say thing when I play a Bluray movie but even though it says 24hz you can tell the frames are smoother and faster.
sometimes you get a lil jadder (nothing that will ruin the overall experiece) and to fix that you have to calibrate you TV and set the frame rate close to zero or simply set it off. (I forgot what’s called in the System settings) I have a Samsung TV as well I can let you know how to set it off once I get home. BD transfer more resolution per frame than DVD and that’s why you can get some judder but DVD picture quality is no where as good as Bluray. That’s why I haven’t watched or bought a single DVD since I bought my PS3.

My TV can only do up to 60Hz, and it lets me know when it changes the refresh rate, so the 24P is 24P
if it does 1080 at 50Hz it lets you know, this is the standard DVD out from the xbox or PS3 front end
If i remember right the DVD out from the PS3 stays at 720p, not sure why it doesn’t upscale for that.

Movie studios records their movies in 24hz. so 120hz TVz is false advertisements. the frames will most likely look nicer, smoother and faster (and sometime they will like “fake”) but it’s not native 120hz.
I have not played any DVD on my PS3 but I know there is a “DVD upcale” option in the settings
idk the model of my tv, I have to look it up when I get home. I have another 60hz Samsung TV as well (both TVz are 46″), I’ll check the settings for that one as well.

You link actually states what I said before – its a bluray or PS3 issue, its because of the 24fps native recording. It’s always been there but we’re able to notice it becuase of the higher res.

I just read your article. This article was written in November 2008. The better technology t.v.’s do not have hardly any of these issues. I am not trying to be disrespectable but again the issue is with your t.v. Your t.v. is more then likely not calibrated correctly or it doesn’t do a good job processing fast moving images. People don’t realize if a t.v. is not calibrated properly, it can cause all sorts of problems with picture quality.

LOL! What’s all this about DVDs looking the same as BluRay!? LMFAO! Must have eye problems, the difference is like video compared to DVD. I have all the Lost on DVD and bought the BluRay complete set recently and the difference is massive. Same goes for all the Blu Rays I buy, DVD is not in the same league, don’t know what shit this it you’re on about.

We have tackled this issue years ago…..with HH the dipshit….he made the same exact claim….then, he got schooled here by myself and a few others….now HH the dipshit no longer posts here….do not carry on his torch…
As for the panning issue….newer tvs I believe have “dejuddering” features that reduce juddering during pan shots…
Also, features such as ” smooth motion” (different companies call it different names, its the feature that makes movies appear like a live film) can actually cause more juddering AND cause artifacting…
I have personally tested this as my tv( Sony KDS-55A3000, CNET best tv 2008), although a lil older has the option of turning said feature on or off, and notices the juddering and artifacting while it was on….turn it off, I lose that 120mhz live film effect, but I don’t get the juddering/artifacting…
But to say dvd >br in th visual department is jus comical….
Post that in those avs forums, which I’m a frequent poster in, and they will laugh you out of their forums..

I calibrate all of my friends televisions. They were majorly blown away by the difference in picture quality when I finished the calibrations. People don’t realize that simple things like not having brightness and contrast set correctly can cause major problems with picture quality.

Reviewers are not afraid to give Socom 4 low review scores because of the bad reputation of Confrotation, which I believe will hunt the franchise in the future and will always keep new comers having second thoughts about the IP.
destructoid gave it a 3 but I pretty sure Socom 4 is much better than most of their 3-8 reviewed games

Socom is about strategy and staying alive for as long as you can. It’s not like COD where you’re contantly dying are respawning.
Socom 4 is getting critized because they turned Socom 4 into a more mainstream shooter. No you have health regen, respawn game, large scale maps, etc.
Socom use to be about small team battles, each with one health bar for the entire round. It used to be intense whenever you were the only one alive in your team versus 4 others and were able to pull it off and win the round. Vitory dance were handy in those moments

Gears and Rainbow 6 are like that. There a few modes in COD that are set up that way as well.
It makes for a better game once you get used to it…and the way is not that long since each round is 5mins long (you can set it for less) and by the time you die the the wait time will most likely be less than 1.5 mins or 2 mins… Socom is not a run n gun game, so you dont run out like a retard and get killed within the firt 10 seconds of the round.

Anyway I don’t see the Prince coming to my wedding, so why should I care about his?
I think the attraction of the RF is just because there is a lot of history with them. I done guard duties for Buck Palace and Tower of London a few years ago and fucking hated it! I didn’t join the Army to play statue for 2 hours at a time while foreign birds rubs themselves up against me to try and make me smile(which I did every time lmao).

And Portal 1 wasn’t really a real game, it was more of a thing they tried and just bundled it with the Orange Box for less risk to see how well it would be received, which was very well. I loved Portal 1. the videos, reviews and articles on Portal 2 are all very, very positive. You should at least give it a look pal, it might surprise you.
