Starhawk revealed – transforming jets and RTS gameplay

May 14, 2011

Starhawk revealed - transforming jets and RTS gameplay LightBox recently revealed some awesome gameplay videos around what is probably one of the worst kept secrets in the industry. However, it appears that the studio managed to keep most of the details a secret.

Starhawk is a third-person shooter/air & ground combat game similar to its predecessor, Warkhawk. LightBox stated that Starhawk is a spiritual successor as the studio managed to keep many of the core mechanics that made fans fall in love with Warhawk.

One of the biggest additions to Starhawk is its Build & Battle gameplay mechanic. This feature allows players to build large scale destructible structures and turrets on the fly. Its like bringing RTS features into a live action shooter. Similarly to Starcraft, you can build structures by harvesting “Rift Energy” from the various planets you may be on.

The concept is certainly fresh and it could potentially be a game changer if implemented properly. Another gameplay change LightBox implemented is the ability for Starhawk jets to transform into giant mechs. The game will offer the same large scale environments fans have grown to love in Warhawk. The game also supports up to 32 players in the multiplayer mode.

Check out the preview video along with the dev diary around some of the gameplay mechanics below:

In addition to the RTS elements, you also have the ability to build and customize your own vehicle in the in-game garage for some ground combat.

There is also a robust single player campaign in the game, which we will go into detail later on. Starhawk is definitely shaping up to be a nice exclusive title for the PS3.

    looks good

  2. MAK:

    I love warhawk. But, it was sooooooo damn hard. Not the mention the trophies. I mean, its just a game, not a part time job. Hopefully they change that. Looks really nice though. A game that most people can like, its not directly aimed at one particular type of gamer.

  3. Roca.:

    The learning curve kept many ppl away from enjoying the game…the game great, it had a lil if everything and it was well balanced.

    Btw PSN update is now live

  4. The Future of Sega:

    God bless Sony!!! PSN is back on!!! Rock on Sony!!!!

  5. ncaissie:

    There is an update but I can’t log in still.

  6. Roca.:

    @ncaissie

    not available in your region yet – http://goo.gl/5IDu8

  7. MAK:

    @ Roca

    Well yeah. the learning curve of warhawk was overwhelming. There was no single player to help you get used to the game (besides tutorials, which dont help). So you were forced to be put riggt in the middle of the action. And its tough for new players, so its a turn off after 5 minutes of playing. There was no smooth start like most games have. So it should have had a Single Player of some sort, its the original purpose of a video game/how they started out. until the good ole Box came along

  8. ncaissie:

    WTF? fucking Ottawa should have been the first one up!

  9. gunstar:

    @Roca
    This one looks way, way better than Warhawk and I like that black guy protag already.
    The land vehicles transform into mechs too. Even the kids loved the vehicular combat in Warhawk.

    Autobots transform and roll out!!!

    I love how it’s pretty much a ‘US only’ map. It even looks like they just kind of bodged Canada on there (hence the gaps between the border in some areas) – I would comment more on the labels (or lack of for Canada), but if you don’t know what state you’re living in and where it’s located on the map, then I think you have bigger problems than the PSN being down.

    Poor Mexico too, not even ack’d by SCEA.

    Oh well, should be up by the time I get up in the morning.

  11. CarlB:

    West Coast haters…

  12. twilight:

    I’m up on Psn! Yes……..

  13. FahKinSuPah:

    OMG now I gotta go through that BS just to watch Netflix again… wonderful

  14. ncaissie:

    Metric was never down fahk

  15. ncaissie:

    That was netflix but the dam iOS changed it

  16. MAK:

    I think its dumb how you need to be signed into your PSN account to watch Netflix on PS3. Netflix has their own login. I started my free trial a week before the shutdown. Hilarious. I hope we get compensated in Firmware Updates. I dont care about money and games. Id rather have Google Chrome, Cross Game Chat, Youtube integration, and a BLACK color wave PS3 theme ;)

    Or a Invert theme. The wave becomes a milky solid white and all icons and text become a solid black. It would go with the “Play B3yond” ads they had back then. As well as the Black.

  17. FahKinSuPah:

    “BLACK color wave PS3 theme ”

    Good to know i’m not theonly one who would like something like that.

    @ncaissie

    At least while PSN was down I could still watch netflix. But now that I have to update my PS3 again I will have to go through that so I can watch netflix again.

    I know its really small potatoes but I just dread every system firmware update because it often takes awhile. In comparison 360 updates are much faster.

  18. Barnabe Jones:

    Today’s update was super quick. About one minute I think.

    I still have to finish up the single player for Portal 2. I just started doing the blue tunnel things. I think I’m pretty close to the end.

    After that, I’m all about the co-op if anyone is interested. I did a few of the trials split screen already. The puzzles are pretty awesome.

  19. Barnabe Jones:

    Oh yeah, I pre-ordered Dark Souls the other day! The collector’s edition is really nice.

  20. Roca.:

    @BJ
    Dark Souls looks really good. Im’ going to pre order mine really soon

  21. dans303:

    Signed into PSN!!

    Jizzed in my pants! :D

  22. ncaissie:

    My update went fast also

  23. FahKinSuPah:

    Well thats good news at least. I wonder whats in the update?

  24. dans303:

    @fahk

    I’m a bit annoyed that it didn’t say anything about it after you update it.

  25. Barnabe Jones:

    @Roca, yeah it looks great. Hopefully we can still trade in the new one. ;)

    I’m guessing there wasn’t much in the update.

  26. ncaissie:

    The update give Sony the ability to force you to change your password.

  27. ncaissie:

    I read it on Sonys blog about the update.

  28. Roca.:

    The whole RTS features sounds really cool, Fat Princess had something similar and it made the game alot more fun.

  29. Ivan_PSP:

    The game looks great but my only fucking problem with all new Sony games is the third person view they use the same for all of them but is like half third person view which sucks socom 4 has a awful third person view is like third meets first lame.

    I hope Naughty Dog doesn’t fuck UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception too, by doing this bs.

    ima still get this shit
