Call of Duty: Elite fee subscription service confirmed
Activision’s embargo around its long rumored subscription service has been broken, with The Wall Street Journal first to report the news. Activision’s new studio, Beachhead has been rumored to have been working on a paid subscription model that would augment existing Call of Duty games.
It appears that those rumors were indeed true as The Wall Street Journal has spilled the beans around some of the details. As speculated, the paid subscription service will offer advanced stat tracking for COD games like Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3. The service, titled Call of Duty: Elite, will offer gamers social networking features such as Facebook integration.
The advanced stat tracking will offer players the capability to do analysis around weapon effectiveness and best loadout suited for the player. This is similar to what Bungie have offered in the past for Halo games.
In addition to Facebook integration, players will have access to robust video editing tools for Call of Duty games and a news feed highlighting events and matches of the day. Some services such as Facebook integration will be free while others will be part of the subscription.
Advanced social networking integration, news feeds and video editing features are similar offerings promised by Naughty Dog for Uncharted 3.
Subscribers will also have access to the map packs offered during that year valued around $15. Its important to note that it will still be free to play multiplayer online (outside of fees such as Xbox Live).
Bobby Kotick, head of Activision indicated that he is not worried about the subscription service as its not taking anything away from players. Kotick indicated that subscription model will be needed to provide the level of service offered by Beachhead with Call of Duty: Elite.
Activision hasn’t revealed a price, but did indicate that it would be less than service fees for similar online-entertainment services, such as the $7.99/month for Netflix.

With E3 only a week away, you can bet that Call of Duty: Elite will be a big part of Activision’s press conference. Microsoft may even have this as part of its press conference as well, considering past cameos made by the publishers.

It must sucks to be a Xbox only user – not only you have to pay to play online but you have to pay for online passes and games with subs-fee attached to them (MMOs, CODs).
Hopefully EA can take advantage of this and offer a shit load of free content with Battlefield 3 – EA is usually good at offering free stuff with their new release title but this time they should go all out.
Activison was the reason why PC games went from $50 to $60 – now they will bring subs fee to online games.
I bet the free version will be half-assed, just like XBL Silver.

Looks like the 360 is still in there, Dirt 3 graphics near identical on both systems but the 360 performs way better, with PS3 suffering >10% screen tearing.

Roca, FYI. .I no longer have live gold, and I’m trying to give PSN another go.
I even moved my PS3 so I could hard wire it to the router.
After a discussion at work with some of the guys who used to have issues with PSN, it was agreed that the problems are caused by the PS3 having shit wireless, and you need to be hard-wired for a stable connection.
Yes, I lost the thread of the article and thought all had to pay to play on-line. .fair do’s if it’s just the tracking stuff.

Yeah, in the temple, got the shields in place, and have one of the muse keys, guessing I need to find the other before I can get the giant ball to smash the door open.
definitely more puzzle based than Dante, but some of the puzzles are infuriating, well there more like mini challenges than puzzles. kicking boxes around while fighting on conveners springs to mind, boy the controller came close to getting a dammed good hiding on that level.
over all good , but Dante was more cathartic, due to less skill required to complete the challenges.
I’ve been told by my wife, that I’m not to play GOW if I can’t stop swearing, so I may need to take a break and play something else for a couple of nights

Dante’s is a weak game in comparation and requires no strategy. I beat the game on hard and I pretty much went through the whole game by just tapping/holding the circle button.

Wait until you get to the room where you need to kill all your enemies before the floor drops out. You’re close if your near the Atlas part.
Then theres another where you have have to kick a box along a floor to get to a higher level, but you only have a short amount of time until spikes come out of the floor.
Then theres the balance beams in Hades portion on the tunnel.
Oh… And the column in Hades.
You may need a new controller after that.

I couldn’t beat Satan on normal difficulty. I survived for 20 minute play throughs vs him, but noting I did took significant damage off of him. I had to lower the difficulty.

I had issues with Cleopatra’s champion (Alexandra?), but that was because I wasn’t properly using the relics until greed.

If you have more than 1 friend then LIVE is worth every penny. I have friends I regularly chat to in Sweden, Germany, Spain and France, as well as my friends in Ireland.
I can set up party chats and speak to them all at once or individually on separate channels even though we are all doing our own thing by playing different games.
The last 12 month subscripion I got was £24.99 out of GAME who had an offer on 2 months ago. That’s £2.08 per month.

Since you guys have nothing else to play but Kinect(Exclusives wise) all you can do is set up chat with random ppl all over the world – I can do that for free on every single devices with internet connection.
On PSN you get about $250-$300 worth of content with PSN+ – that includes 4 free games every months, early access to betas, free DLC and premuins avatar and dynamic themes, free Qore Online Magazine and Cloud Saving with NGP compability.
Also, Netflix, Hulu, Facebook, are all free and better on PS3.
As for the netflix being the bandwith leader – that doesn’t mean they get the “most” traffic – a 2-hours HD quality movie probably requires more bandwith than a month worth of facebook (daily use, cosntant status update). You also sees way more traffic than Netflix, it’s just that Netflix require way more bandwith for a single content than all others.

Sony purposely kept it down a month or so, it wasn’t because the hackers kept it down. They are trying hard to buy its way into market (Nokia, BB, free 360, etc) but they only sold about 10% (in a quarter0 of what Android and Apple sell in a single month.

First of all Roca, all of these providers are not offerring their services for free. You still have to pay a fee to the providers for the service. Secondly, it doesn’t matter that Espn is not available everywhere. Sony offers services in Europe that are not available in America. Espn is a great feature that Xbox360 has that Ps3 does not offer.

1. The same standards apply for ESPN3 on Xbox 360 – Not only do you have to pay the monthy fee to your ISP but you also have to pay MS to allow you to access that’s been offered to you for free…
2. PSN is free, no is being forced to pay for those region specific services on PS3 – it’s offered as an free extra features. While on 360, extra services are not free and you said XBL Gold is worth the price for ESPN alone but what about those ppl who don’t get ESPN (or even netflix) and still have to pay XBL and MS still raise the XBL fee for them as well.
Either way you look at it, it still does not seem worth it. PSN is free, services on PSN are free to access and ESPN3 is a free service.

Guys I agree that it’s a bit crap that MS charge for online play capability, but in the grand scheme of things it costs less tan a big mac once a month so it really is no big deal.
if the PS3 worked for things like lastFM then i’d feel more strongly that there should be no charge, but MS has a flawless interface to it’s online stuff, which is more than can be said for the PS3, Even assuming it’s online.
The PS3 web browser needs to be a whole lot better before it can match the MS interface to these things.
If the PS3 gets Chrome, then the 360 is left without a leg to stand on, and MS would seriously need to think about removing the fee for standard online access, and have something more along the lines of PSN/PSN+ kind of split

Basic is like Last FM.

Godless, Last.FM is just one free service attached to XBL sub fee that has a better UI on 360. What about Netflix, Hulu – not only are they both free but their UI and overall experience is better on PS3.

In 5 years, the PSN has been down all of 1 month, and all of a sudden, that is what justifies spending 60 greenbacks a year on something that should be free. First it was ‘PS3 has no games’. Then when the PS3 got AAA title after AAA title, it was ‘PSN has a crappy connection’ (talk to the SSFIV community, on both systems, and ask which is the better online experience. Remember, LAG destroys a fighting game experience). Then it was the controller that justified LIVE.
Now it’s the community and the outage that justifies Live– even though Live has been down before, and it probably will happen again! Yet you still pay for it!

One last thing.
Another thing that annoys me is how the Xbots go on about price. Funny thing is, early adopters of the 360 have paid more than early adopters of PS3, even at 600 bucks.
Allow me to explain.
Let’s say customer X buys a 360 on launch day, and by some miracle, he still has it to this day. Same for customer P, only she bought a PS3 on launch day. At $399.99, customer X laughs at customer P because her system cost $599.99. Both have decided to game online exclusively.
Assuming both have kept their systems to this day (pretty amazing for customer X, for obvious reasons), X would have spent over $300, just to play online, whereas P spent just the original $600 at launch.
So in reality, excluding games, controllers, and other extras, P spent $600, whilst X spent $700.
But if we added in the prices of things P’s system included that X’s didn’t:
1 Blu Ray player- at the time, $1,000
Rechargeable battery- $20
Bigger hard drive- $100
HDMI port- invaluable
Wi-fi- $50
So $1,870 is what X really paid, whilst P is still at $600.
And her online experience is still free.

You totally snuck in Blu Ray player in there, but that has nothing to do with playing video games.
You don’t necesarrily need an HDMI port either, and Xbox comes with composite cables. That works fine for the 720p that most people have on their HDTVs.
