Microsoft E3 2011 Xbox 360 recap – hardcore Kinect finally here

June 7, 2011

This year’s E3 was once again started off by Microsoft. The publisher finally had some hardcore titles to show off as well as some Kinect focused titles.

One great thing Microsoft did this year was focus somewhat on hardcore games at its press conference. Back in 2010, the company was all about Kinect and the press conference felt like one huge infomercial about the peripheral device.

Here is the run down:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 demoed onstage. Xbox to receive timed exclusive mappack
  • Microsoft unveils Halo: Anniversary (rumored Halo: Combat Evolved HD remaster). Halo remaster comes with four-player co-op campaign and seven multiplayer maps. The game is currently planned for release November 15, 2011.
  • Mass Effect 3 to have Kinect support – verbally read out dialog to select it, control squad by voice commands
  • Ghost Recon: Future Solider demoed on stage and also will have Kinect support – voice command, use fingers and hand motion to play game
  • Kinect Voice Support coming to Xbox Live Dashboard soon
  • YouTube video watching coming to Xbox Live soon
  • Bing Search coming to Xbox Live
  • Crytek’s Codename Kingdoms, renamed to Ryse
  • Fable: The Journey announced
  • Minecraft coming to Xbox 360 with Kinect support
  • Tim Schafer announces Sesame Street Xbox 360 exclusive Kinect game
  • Kinect Fun Labs announced
  • Dance Central 2 announced
  • Halo 4 announced for winter 2012 – new trilogy
  • Microsoft announce Xbox Live IPTV service (rumored Diamond subscription)

Microsoft managed to wrangle in some hardcore title reveals with Halo 4 and Halo Anniversary. It looks like the company is also serious about implementing Kinect across hardcore titles such as Mass Effect 3 and Ghost Recon.

Stay tuned for news around Nintendo’s upcoming press conference soon.

  1. phranctoast:

Considering it’s entirely possible, I wonder if all this voice controls will be controllable via mic and not just kinect. Probably not. MS just sold you suckers a $150 mic….lol

  2. CarlB:

Yes. Of course. That is why PS3′s XMB has had the option of being voice activated all these years.

  3. phranctoast:

I must of missed the relevancy. Why are you mentioning PS3?

Are you denying that voice control is software based, and Kinect is needed to achieve this?

  4. k12online1:

    Bull shit press conference.

  5. Godless:

Kinect has hardware directional detection and noise cancellation built in, it’s a little more complex than just a stereo mic

this is why voice control up until now has been a very Hit & miss affair in almost all applications where you are not wearing the mic next to your mouth.

  6. Roca.:

“Kinect has hardware directional detection and noise cancellation built in”

so does the PS Eye. The only thing the PS Eye does no do is 3D tracking but they have the Move controller for that.

I like how MS redesign their UI and made horizontal now with simpre text across the screen – It’s certainly look like the XMB layout now.

Who won the first day of E3?
“Today, Sony took first place at E3. Their combination of unique content, exclusive games, and new hardware put them far above than Microsoft’s Kinect-focused presentation. Sony struck a good balance of appealing to hardcore and casual gamers alike with major FPS, action-adventure, racing, and family titles on display. Besides Halo and Gears of War, Microsoft’s conference came off as one big Kinect sales pitch, which just didn’t do it for me and many others. Kinect isn’t the end all be all and it would have definitely helped to have seen less multiplatform titles making up their line-up”

  7. phranctoast:

Considering that so many 360′s also have mic’s (a bragging point for xbots) and voice control is 100% software driven, why not have this functionality without the use of a $150 peripheral?

  8. Roca.:

    @Phranc
You’re right. The voice control feature they show for Mass Effect 3 was done before with just a headset. Socom 1, 2 & 3 did it.

  9. Godless:

Guys, the whole idea is that you have as little hardware on you as possible.

do you want to wear a mic when you don’t need to?

do you want to hold anything you don’t need to, Move is just one extra thing to Hold, drop or throw at the TV.

if they get the kinect tech working right it will remove the need for any controls baring maybe a small directional controller to enable free movement rather than on rails type gaming.

Vioce commands have been around for 20 years but it’s always been very ropey at best.

I had the MS sidewinder like 10 years ago for the PC and it worked fine, most of the time, but it was still clunky, kinect is by far the best effort so far with this tech., but it still has a long way to go yet.

  10. Roca.:

    @Godless
I agree, voice control is not as convenient as just pressing a button. Too bad that was one of Microsoft main focus.

    MS’ press conference recap:
    -Kinect Sports Season 2
    -Sesame Street
    -Kinect Disneyland
-Ryse for Kinect – formely known as Codename Kingdoms
    -Fable: The Journey for Kinect
    -Minecraft for Kinect
    -Kinect Labs
    -Dance Central 2 for Kinect
    -Kinect based UI
-Kinect features on ME3, Madden, Fifa & Ghost Reacon

If I was a 360 gamer I would’ve been pretty disappointed…were you excited about these annoucements Godless?

  11. phranctoast:

    @godless.

I can see that as being a selling point for movie playback or other features, but if you have the headset already and you are playing a game, it seems odd to not to be able to have voice commands in…lets say Mass Effect 3…

  12. Godless:

No, I’m not exited about kinect, per say, but I am happy to see MS furthering the technology, because I think the potential for this will open up a whole new level of gaming.

Yes, I would like MS to focus more on hardcore games, but I have a PS3 so I don’t really care where they focus their efforts, I’ll just buy the games I like on which ever platform plays it best.

I like Fable & Forza, and gears looks pretty good too, so there are at least 3 I probably will get, add to that 3 PS3 exclusives and say 3 or 4 multiplats in a year and that’s about all I will buy anyway, so I’m pretty happy.

I can see that for hardcore gamers with more time on their hands the 360 is not offering enough to make it the machine to choose, if you don’t yet have either.

on the other hand, the 360, will attract more parents of the younger kids, with the kinect titles so MS is pretty safe for now, I just hope there next machine is not totally built around Kinect II

  13. phranctoast:

    This made me lol.
    A CAD wish list title.

    http://m.kotaku.com/5809388/kinect-gets-exclusive-cheerleader-game

  14. Godless:

    exited = excited ;^)

  15. Roca.:

“I can see that for hardcore gamers with more time on their hands the 360 is not offering enough to make it the machine to choose, if you don’t yet have either”

That’s why Sony said they are running out of steam.
The only 2 hardcore exclusives were games they already announced last year – Gears 3 and Forza.

Like SW said…why is Nintendo going back to regular controller? The motion novelty does not last long and after a while you just to go back and play some awesome games on a traditional controller but MS is banking its future on Kinect….this year alone they haven’t release a single quality hardcore exclusive for the 360.

  16. Godless:

    LOL

Cheerleader you say. . .HMmmm. .It could be a good game, if you could get some women round to play it (naked) ;)

  17. phranctoast:

    where did my finger go?

    Why are you giggling?

  18. phranctoast:

The picture of the cheerleaders in the link look like almost all the of the same girl…Kind of weird.

  19. Godless:

Motion control on Kinect is not the same as on the wii.

Kinect actually does what people were gubbed into believing the Wii could do.

Once they realise the wii has absolutely no idea of what you’re doing it gets lame, kinect is watching you, not just tracking the movement of a handheld unit.

kinect is early days and will only get better, the wii & Move devices could be an accompaniment to kinnect but never a replacement

  20. ncaissie:

“I must of missed the relevancy. Why are you mentioning PS3?”

    Because he is a troll.

  21. Roca.:

The Wii is actually a better Motion controller. for example – on ME2 you can just point and click rather than pointing with the 360 joypad and saying “move forward”

It also more presice now that it has the Motion Plis built in. I think you have played Kinect yet and you’re just going off what MS have said in the past.

Kinect is very limited – another example is Ghost Recon, did you see how long it took him to zoom in and out, to reload, ti aim???

  22. ncaissie:

“Kinect has hardware directional detection and noise cancellation built in, it’s a little more complex than just a stereo mic”
More accurate than a mic on your fuckin cheek?
Lmao retard. You idiots will say anything to defend kinect.

  23. ncaissie:

    “where did my finger go?”
It wouldn’t be my finger lol

  24. Barnabe Jones:

Another E3 another unanimous victory for Sony.

    - Halo is the new COD = annual rushed releases
    -”hardcore” on-the-rails kinect games
    -casual kinect games
-Higher priced xbot live called diamond.

Also I bet Halo HD will be a $60 re-release. Not like the PS2 re-releases where you get 2-3 games for $39.

  25. Godless:

Are Nintendo not doing this too?

  26. ncaissie:

    Nintendo sucks also lol

  27. ncaissie:

LMFAO 3 people voted xbox as the winner.
Let me guess CON, Rimmer and Godless.

Nintendo’s conference was the fucking worst ive ever seen…..

  31. k12online1:

I take that back but current gen graphics and multi platform games aren’t enough.

  32. Roca.:

They at least showed a better lineup than Microsoft.

  33. k12online1:

Lol idk about that both were pretty lame for me.

    My scores:

    Sony: A-

    ouch Nintendo.

    That controller look horrendous.

It does…but if it’s a success the PS Vita + PS3 (or PS4) can easily replicate the same function.

Two birds (portable gaming & Wii U functions) killed with ine stone.

  39. k12online1:

    It just came inFamous!!!!!!!!!! etc.

  43. Barnabe Jones:

Just saw Wii – U….. Wow!

What a piece of shit! I said that about the Wii when it was first shown also, but this looks at least 1000% times worse than that.

Things are looking really good already for Sony and MS next gen. :D Good.

  44. Roca.:

I wonder how you going to play games like Battlefield with no shoulder buttons on Wii U

  45. CAD:

    Godless

Kinect has the best voice control ever. No divice works better. No PC, Phone, Blutooth, or any thing that have voice control works as good as kinect. In order for everything else to work properly on those devices you need a room to be completely quite. Kinect with it’s 6 Microphones and hardware directional detection and noise cancellation built in works in any condition. It’s the best voice detiction ever. No need for a headset just talk into the air and watch magic happen.

“I wonder how you going to play games like Battlefield with no shoulder buttons on Wii U:

You’re not. You’re going to play it on a real console.

  48. Roca.:

Lets compared the Wii U controller vs PS Vita:
    Feature = Wii U | PS Vita

    Screen = 6.2″ | 5″
Touch screen = Yes | Yes
Touch rear panel = No | yes
dual stick = Yes | Yes
Front camara = Yes | Yes
Rear camara = No | Yes
    built-in mic = Yes | Yes
    Speakers = Yes | Yes
    Accelerometer = Yes | Yes
    Gyroscope = Yes | Yes
Electronic compass = No | Yes
    Buil-in GPS = No | Yes

  49. phranctoast:

“No need for a headset just talk into the air and watch magic happen.”

You’re obviously missing the point. There’s no need for Kinect if you have a headset for voice control.

MS is simply, unnecessarily nickel and diming you.

repeat your new Microsoft motto CAD.
*Thank you sir….may I have another*

  50. SW:

It has shoulder buttons, just not as many. The hardware backwards compatibility is genius also (and note that I already called this ;) ).

  51. SW:

“Lets compared the Wii U controller vs PS Vita:”

While the Vita does have more ‘stuff’ (altho I think the rear touch panel is just silly), you have to remember the scope of these devices.

The Vita is designed to be a portable machine, the WiiU is not. Therefore it has no need for a GPS, front cam, or compass, etc.

They are simply not in competition what-so-ever.

When Sony releases the PS4 with a bundled Vita as part of the purchase cost, THEN you can compare the PS4 against the WiiU.

  52. CAD:

    Phranctoast

You act like all Kinect does is add voice control. your banter is pathetic.

  53. CAD:

    I agree SW.

  54. SW:

    “I agree SW.”

Is it too late to change my statement?..

  55. Roca.:

    @SW
“They are simply not in competition what-so-ever”

who said anything about competition? I said the Vita is capable of replicating the Wii U controller’s fuctions. that’s why I compared the two, so my point still stands.

    @CAD
You agree to what? or you’re just kissing ass as usual?

  56. CON:

FIFA has been a notorious console seller for the PS3 so will be interesting how the extra kinect features will effect sales as things like penalties will be pretty fun.

I think in general the fact that multiplat games are really embrassing kinect will be a worry for sony. Sales figures for multiplat games this christmas will be interesting.

  57. ncaissie:

“Two birds (portable gaming & Wii U functions) killed with ine stone.”
That is a great idea. I had a similar one only the controller connects to the tv and is the consol. Kinda like a PSP but with a better form factor.

  58. jojo29:

    Here’s thoughts:

    Microsoft:
they achieved what they wanted to this gen, namely, carve a nice chunk of the market for themselves, now, they are beta testing Kinect for the rest of this generation in order for them to 1) work out any of the kinks/ improve the tech, which, needless to say, if and when implemented correctly, I.e, dance central, is a very great way to enjoy games and along with it being great piece of tech and 2) gather as much 3 rd party support for future kinect titles along with getting devs used to working with kinect..

To me this explains ms extreme lack of core games….or games at all…..but they have 3 very big flaws 1) they are ms and will forever carry the stigma of being the evil, corporation that they are 2) all other players are offering a lot og gold’ s services for free, only truly idiotic, stupid ass, shit for brains, morons would ever pay to play their games online when the competition offers equal to or better than experiences than gold….and 3) their extreme lack of first party studios will only solidify ms as a me too console instead of an innovative one like sony and nintendo and leaves ms at the mercy of 3 rd party studios, meaning unless they pony up extreme cash to lockdown exclusives, aside from ki ect, they will have nothing to offer

    Sony
They are in the dominant position for next gen, they have solid 3 rd party support, in fact, regaining it in their favor, and as a fail safe they have some of, if not the best exclusive franchises and 1 st/2nd party studios in the market, meaning they can not only ensure their fanbase will get all the multiplatform games but exclusives such as uncharted, resistance, infamous, not including other exclusives such as god of war, killzone, ratchet, sly, jak….twisted metal ….sorry sony haters, but if its games you want, sony is the fucking place to be period….believe when I say it, mark my words gears will go multiplat and all ms will be left with is halo lmao..

    Nintendo
well nintendo is nintendo and they will work their magic….put it this way, id rather invest in the wii-u, than help ms beta test their kinect….its too late for me to jump on the ms wagon for only ONE game for ME, gears 3…halo to me is absolute corporate mainstream trash, fable will be on pc and gt more than gives me my racing fix…ms has nothing to offer me but bills after bills….because of this, id rather and plan to pick up the wii u instead of a 360 that can still fail on me, that charges me to use free services, and that don’t care about the games I want, or care to bring out new or innovative titles, until ms does that, they can count on missing out on a sale ;)

  59. phranctoast:

“You act like all Kinect does is add voice control. your banter is pathetic.”

I’m talking about voice control. Not it’s other features.

YOU DO NOT NEED KINECT FOR VOICE CONTROL.

  60. ncaissie:

You missed 3G, bt and wifi roca

  61. phranctoast:

    lol @ CON

I read that as embarrassing instead of embracing.

  62. ncaissie:

FIFA sucks ass. Gay fucking game.
In no fuckin way is it a system seller. Nice try idiot.

  63. Roca.:

    @ncaissie
3G and wifi are console features, I was just comparing similar features to support my previous statement about PS Vita being able to replicate the Wii U controller fuctions.

I know PS Vita is a console but I was not comparing it as a direct competition, just saying if Sony allow us to use it as a controller we could have TWO gaming experiences:

    1. Wii U experience
    2. Dualshock experience, as always

  64. CON:

    @Frank

LOL yeah I type too fast. Spelt it as it sounded.

    @Norman

FIFA has an extremely loyal fanbase. Football is the biggest sport on the planet…….idiot.

  65. ncaissie:

Do you know why Sony has solid 3rd party support?
Because developers are hard core gamers and don’t really want move and kinect shit. Ms is forcing it and Sony isn’t.

  66. ncaissie:

    All sports games suck idiot.

  67. ncaissie:

Oh and if any sports game sold systems it would be that real football one lol you know maden something or other.

  68. jojo29:

    Ncassie
CON has one good point: soccer, is by far the mkst popular sport on the planet….actually, certain franchises just sell like hotcakes..(crepes) in europe, fifa and wipeout come to mind, in fact, if you play wipeout online, you’ll find most of your opponents are from europe ;)

  69. ncaissie:

“YOU DO NOT NEED KINECT FOR VOICE CONTROL.”
Which was the big thing this year. The bing searches lol talk, wait 2 minutes…….. Oh there it is! Isn’t that awesome?

  70. Roca.:

    @CON
you act like it’s going to make a difference. European ppl prefer Playstation over Xbox and they will still need a $150 add-on for those half-assed Kinect features.

Did Move support for Tiger Woods made a difference in sales? I don’t think so

  71. SW:

    “so my point still stands.”

Sort of like comparing a bicycle to a Bugatti don’t you think? (I’ll leave you to decide which one is the Bugatti.)

    @Phranc

You mean you’ve never seen a Ford or Kia with a Full sized Kinect taped to the rear view mirror for ‘Sync’? ;)

Fucking super Kinect mic my fucking arse I tell ya.

  72. ncaissie:

Funny because I don’t see or hear of it often. I see more of other sports. Baseball is bigger hear. I don’t think we even have any national or international teams. It doesn’t go beyond schools or amature soccer.

  73. phranctoast:

“FIFA has been a notorious console seller for the PS3 so will be interesting how the extra kinect features will effect sales as things like penalties will be pretty fun.

I think in general the fact that multiplat games are really embrassing kinect will be a worry for sony. Sales figures for multiplat games this christmas will be interesting.”

Interesting take. It may mean something if properly marketed.

Take Batman AA with the Joker for instance on the PS3.

Sold better than the 360 counterpart.

Now take Portal 2 on the PS3. A game any logical person would agree is significantly better on the PS3 with graphics, Steam support and a free PC game to boot.

    Sold better on the 360.

They have to make current Fifa players want to play that way, and personally see the additional Kinect functionality gimmicky at best.

  74. phranctoast:

“You mean you’ve never seen a Ford or Kia with a Full sized Kinect taped to the rear view mirror for ‘Sync’?”

    Only once.

CAD was in NY for some reason or other…..;)

  75. CON:

    @Roca

Fuck off troll lol I read that comment that your girlfriend plays more games than some of us in here and laughed my head off. She sounds like quite a catch.

    @Norman

Yeah I hear american football is really big in south america, europe, asia and africa…….lol must be the appeal of all those helmets and padding. Funny how they talk the talk with the ‘world’ of american football yet have one of the shittest rugby teams in the world

  76. phranctoast:

CON watches the Super Bowl for the commercials ;)

  77. Roca.:

    @SW
“Sort of like comparing a bicycle to a Bugatti don’t you think?”

You’re not getting my point. I was NOT comparing them directly as competitors, instead I was just supporting what I said earlier about the PS Vita being able to do the same fuctions (For PS3) as the Wii U controller.

My point was that if X game, lets Ninja Gaiden, lets you see your items inventory on the smaller screen…then developers can make that function available for the PS3 versions for those users who have a PS Vita..

Do you get what I was trying to say now?

  78. MAK:

“Kinect has hardware directional detection and noise cancellation built in, it’s a little more complex than just a stereo mic”

Uhh, the new Official PS Bluetooth has noise cancelation. And im sure the new Official PS Headsets are close too.
PS3 has like the highest voice quality mics to date. And guess what? They are all under $150 ;)

  79. jojo29:

    CON
American Football is the shit son, it easily outsells anything rugby has to offer, there is a reason for the pads and helmets dumbfucks, id go so far as to say “just” our offensive/defensive linemen have more intense atheletism than any rugby player…we are talking 300lb men that can actually fucking run and move….that’s not even takinf into account running backs like jerome bettia who prettt much is a fucking truck on 2 legs, ir the greatest running back of all time, barry sanders, who I’m willing to bet my left nut sack no rugby would even touch…there’s a reason why all of europe can’t even compete against our 30+ teams l m a o….y’all just catching us in basketball, you still need baseball let alone football son….some of the greatest atheletes of all time, even world renowned are from american football….not one rugby player has even made a splash over here

In terms of soccee……all ill say is at least the usa can qualify for world cup….will we ever win one….who knows I have multiple teams I root for and all are latin conference teams in rank of favorite:
    Argentina, go messi
    Mexico, go chicharito!
    Unites states

    My european favs aare
    italy
Englad, their red jerseys look sick lol

Go ahead and bad mouth american footbll again….ill bring actual data whereas you’ll just be spewing non sense

  80. CaptBirdman:

    @Frankie

“It looks like Nintendo is ripping off Sony once again.”

Don’t take this personal, because I’m a PS3 ‘fanboy’ too, but you’re absolutely blinded by the Playstation sugar. The WiiU looks more like the bottom screen of the DSiXL– I know, because I own one.

Nintendo pretty much pioneered that design– Apple and Sony ripped that design from them. Sony, more specifically, took the nintendo design and took it a step further. I personally think the WiiU is pretty cool, even though an idiot can see the Vita is much better hardware.

  81. Roca.:

    @Birdman
When I read that I knew he was joking.

But what design did Apple and Sony ripped from Nintendo?

  82. CON:

If they’re that big why the need for padding??? lol

Rugby has it all, big players, small players, fast, slow. It’s a brilliant spectator sport because of its pace unlike the stop start nature of american football.

Here’s one of my all time favourite matches. Ireland destroying England at Croke Park.

  83. CAD:

“YOU DO NOT NEED KINECT FOR VOICE CONTROL.”

    @ Phranctoast

I really hate it when ignorant people talk about thing they don’t know.

First when you use Kinect it brings up a completly different menu. It’s not the same menu that you get with the controller. It brings it up in a Meto UI style made for kinect. The moment you say “Xbox” it automatically goes to this menu. This is where the voice capabilities are. Sure they can use the headset for voice but what’s the point. I rather have kinect because I don’t need a headset plus it’s cooler. Your just angry becasue the 360 is making the PS3 look like a Dinosaur. When the PS3 starts packing in a Headset let me know so I can applaud Sony’s efforts.

Yeah I hear the xbox is really big in south america, europe, asia and africa…….lol

My inFAMOUS 2 Hero Edition photo took with PlayStation Eye my digital camera was stolen http://www.uploadgeek.com/share-7ADC_4DEE9DBA.html

Microsoft’s E3 was again a massive lame failure. Sony Own them.

  94. phranctoast:

    I wasn’t joking, and I certainly wasn’t taking about it’s physical appearance.

Ever hear of remote play via ps3/psp?
Ever see the psp screen used as a rear view mirror while also being the controller?

It’s not the first time nintendo got ideas from Sony. The wii mote is essentially a camera in your hand. I wish I still had the link where miyomoto is playing eye toy.

  95. ncaissie:

maybe it’s just because it is a web video but the current gen games like bf 3 didn’t look anywhere near ps3 level. better than anything wii can do but not current gen. curious what the specs are.

  96. ncaissie:

“my digital camera was stolen ”
or pawned. lol broke ass punk. you are probably that crazy black chick that was on the pawn stars show.
and told the guy he wasn’t going to make it home to see his wife? because you are gangster right?

  97. ncaissie:

LOL that controller looks like shit. It looks awkward as hell. It has shoulder buttons and triggers.
I wonder how they plan to make use of the duel sticks and still stay compatible with the wiimote.
I do give them props for coming out with their next consol before anyone else. We are long overdue for next gen. The games are maxed out in looks and it is time to move on. The PSP 2 is nice but I want the PS4. Infamous 2 doesn’t look as good as GOW3 even. It does look better than anything on the 360 but I’m not impressed with the looks. Game play is better than the first but I still get motion sickness from the dam thing. Why the fuck do they have to make the dam camera move with the character on a third person game. Not very smart if you ask me.

  98. Barnabe Jones:

    *slow claps*

Welcome to 2005 Nintendo. Nintendon’ts finally get to check out HD graphics.

The software lineup is nothing but multiplats that are already coming to PS3/360. Whoopde-freaking-do.

What PS3/360 owner is going to rush out to buy a new console, that plays the same games, but with an uncomfortable expensive controller?

Also by the time PS4/720 roll around, Wii U is going to be 10+ years outdated already.

I seriously think they’re done. First 3DS, and now this. Gimmicks will only get you so far. They did well for a while, but the party is over.

  99. Barnabe Jones:

Also this concept is older than PSP/PS3 functionality. It first started with the GBA/GameCube.

Most won’t remember it since only 2 or 3 games used it. Yes – I had it. I’ve learned my lessons from Nintendo the hard way.

  100. CAD:

    Twilight

Hey I really think you should get back the Kinect you leant to your family or buy a new one because I don’t think you really tried it out at all. If you never play games with it is you choice but the added functionality that Kinect gives to the 360 is just awesome.

  101. CAD:

OK I can’t believe I’m going to say this. That Nintendo demo comercial was just awesome. I know I’m talking to people who shun advancement in technology especially if it’s not coming from Sony but from what I’m seeing it’s safe to say that Microsoft and Nintendo are truly the companies advancing gaming while Sony advancements are focused on advancing the sales of their TV’s, Blurays, and Phones and PC’s through the PS3. Lets see how fast they copy this idea. The funny thing is this is the same thing that Microsoft is doing when they showed Windows Phone 7 interactng with the Kinect and 360 at MIX 11 this year. I might even buy this new Nintendo console as it is intreuging. I’ll wait for the games though but if third party starts to take advantage of the features it will be the compelling reason to buy the game on Nintendo instead of the others and the same goes for Microsfot. With more games taking advantage of Kinect it also become the compelling reason to get the game on the 360 as oppose to the others. All Sony can do is get extra content or use the Move which is still a rip off Wiimote. And no Kinect is not the Eyetoy it’s way more.

  102. Roca.:

CAD – ” I might even buy this new Nintendo console”

After MS’ E3 embarrassment I bet you would get anything to please your gaming needs – after all every other console (including 3DS and PS Vita) showed a better lineup than the 360.

    W7P is a failure…give it up alreayd.

  103. Rhino:

@CAD “I really hate it when ignorant people talk about thing they don’t know.”

    Then shut the fuck up.

  104. Barnabe Jones:

Cad, you fell for it last year after E3, remember? Wise up.

Wii U = games you can play on your 360. The only things that’s different is that you’ll have a big, bulky, uncomfortable controller.

The gimmick will be fun for a week, and then you’ll never play it. Just like Kinect.

Kinect = different gimmick added to the same multiplatform games. Nothing really unique, or new.

Sony = yet another motion option for multiplat games. The big difference is that they have high quality exclusive games planned. The exclusive games are high quality and don’t relay as heavily on gimmicks.

BTW how often do you play your Wii? Do you really need a Wii HD?

  105. Barnabe Jones:

    Cad,

your comment made me lol. It’s funny coming from someone who listed all of the great exclusive 360 games of 2011.

Your list consisted of 1 real game, 5 multiplats, and DLC.

Yeah, M$ has been pumping out the hits one after the other this year. ;)

  106. CarlB:

    “Why are you mentioning PS3?”

Because it’s the only console I use now and I would like to be able to have voice activation on it to control media like Kinect will. If it was so “simple” why hasn’t sony used it to control the XMB via the Eye’s mic?

  107. ncaissie:

Because it is stupid and not worth the trouble Carl.
    I

  108. ncaissie:

    Hit enter to fast.
It is slow and clunky. No one will wait for the voice control.

  109. Godless:

    caissie

Are you just making shit up, I personally don’t have kinect but two of may mates do, and both have said how good the voice control is.

now while I agree it’s not worth getting kinect just for voice control,, it works really well, the hand gesture thing is more clunky, but that will get better with time.

    caissie

if this were a PS3 that you could switch on, then simply sit/stand in front of to login, then just say PS3 play blu ray, and it plays the movie,

then, if you want to go take a piss or make a cup of tea, you just ask the PS3 to pause the movie without needing to find the remote/joypad (which would probably be plugged in to its 6″ charging lead);)

you’d be ranting on about how cool it was.

personally I cant wait till all devices are voice controlled, because I can never find the f*%king remotes

  110. ncaissie:

Watch the conference you idiot. Then again you are such a fagboy you ignore what’s right in front of your face.

  111. phranctoast:

    @CAD

“I really hate it when ignorant people talk about thing they don’t know.”

    ditto.

Voice control has been around in games without the need of Kinect in the past. SOCOM uses it, End War, etc.

Like godless brought up before. Kinect provides convenience for voice control, as you don’t have to have a headset on to control it. THAT’S IT!!!!!!!

Everything else voice control related can be done with the headset.

    @Carlb,
The simplicity of it was not my point. My point is, it’s an asshole move forcing people that already have headsets to purchase Kinect for voice control functionality when it can also be done with the headset.
If Sony did this…surprise, surprise… it would also be an asshole move.

This point is driven further with games. Let’s take Mass effect 3 as an example. It will use voice commands to make dialog decisions. Why do you need a $150 peripheral for that instead of the headset you already own?

  112. Roca.:

“then, if you want to go take a piss or make a cup of tea, you just ask the PS3 to pause”

or just simply press a button – faster, more convenient and less of a hassle.

Nothing beats buttons, Glad seeing Nintendo going back to it and this is the first time a Nitendo console will have proper dual analog sticks.

  113. phranctoast:

What’s taking so long for the Nintendo story?

    Well, here’s something juicy.

In a bizarre twist to an otherwise exciting news day, during an interview today just following Nintendo’s showing of its new Wii U system and games, company honcho Reggie Fils-Amie told GameTrailers that the sizzle reel of games shown today were not actually from the Wii U. Instead, when asked if they were from PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, Reggie replied “Absolutely, because we’re talking a year away from when the console will launch.”

It’s a little odd that Nintendo wouldn’t have any actual gameplay from the system to show off, but it’s even more disconcerting that the company simply substituted other platforms to demonstrate what the console was capable of. Furthermore, when asked if the system will be “as good” as Microsoft and Sony’s products, Reggie replied that they would… but then tried to refocus the conversation on the fact that the new Wii is finally a 1080p product. Don’t want to take our word for it? Hit the source to watch the very long video (the Reggie clip starts 2 hours and 28 minutes), or listen to the audio below. “

  114. Roca.:

    @Phranc
I was just going post the same thing.
The “just as good” comment just shows Nintendo does not believe Wii U will surpass PS3/360 in graphics.

One Thing I noticed from E3

    1. I didn’t think they could do better than Uncharted 2 but they certainly did with what they showed at E3 – besides the graphics improvements and all the epic scene what really cought my eyes was that Drake can now swim under warter!!!

  115. ncaissie:

Anyone see the gametrailers Sly 4 gameplay footage?

  119. Roca.:

    @Phranc
    I did :)
I also read Sucker Punch is not developing it.

  120. jojo29:

    CAD
….I don’t even know where to start with your stupid ass ms is innovative comment…..it made me lol so hard that you actually believe they are innovative, all because of kinect?

Sonys exclusive have garnered awards in graphics ( god of war, gran turismo, metal gear solid, uncharted, infamous) most original/innovative titles ( uncharted, modnation, littlebigplanet) among other awards….put it this way punk ass, sony pretty much has an exclusive game to compete for best in genre in pretty much every genre, be it racing genrs, gt, modnation, twisted metal, sports, mlb, action, infamous, gow, uncharted, name it and sony has a runner up at least for best in genre, including shooters, killzone….

  121. Godless:

Gears 3 looks amazing, I like the way, it doesn’t break the pace of the game with the cut scene segments, but flows through them seamlessly back to game play.

Graphics look like they stand up to the best the PS3 has to offer too.

  122. Roca.:

“Graphics look like they stand up to the best the PS3 has to offer too”

In your eyes…even Halo Reach and Vanquished are as good as PS3 exclusive and GOW3 wasn’t that graphically impressive.

Suddenly you’re rooting for Gears 3 huh? Must be because that’s Xbox’s only quality exclusive this year.

  123. jojo29:

    Godless
Gears 3 does look awesome…sadly, the first boss in GoW easily outperforms why going in Gears 3, and even my bro was like, slightly better than gears 2 graphics….mind you, he’s a huge gears fan and is not a fan of god war….in fact he’s even stated he likes the story, the graphics are the shit, he just can’t stand kratos lol he calls him a whiny girl, always yelling lol

I’m excited for gears 3, its a fun bad ass game….too bad for me, its the only game in ms exclusive book that I like, as I said, halo is weak, fable I play on pc, forza gets smacked up by gran turismo…..and that’s it for ms exclusives……

Ill you guys what i tell my bro….if ms did 3 things, id get one:
    1. Drop gold sub and make it free

    2. Killer Instinct 3 + hd remakes of 1 and 2….

    3. Mech Assault, with the drop ships ( I loved bringing in the ammo doing mech pick ups/drops)

Ms the most “innovative” thing you can do, is the above trifecta…and I’m there ;)

  124. Godless:

Forza 4 also looks absolutely stunning, even the kinect interactive stuff looked impressive.

I think Forza 4 could be a better looking game than GT5

  125. Godless:

jojo, I don’t agree on the GT5 thing.

I’ll need to wait till I play it but Forza 3 for me was more enjoyable than GT5,though GT5 was a better sim.

I think Forza 4 just takes Forza 3 little further certainly the graphics are a leap forward, better than GT5 by the looks of things so far. Just need to wait and see how it handles.

  126. Roca.:

    @jojo
    1. Drop gold sub and make it free

Instead of making it free, MS raised the price for it.

    2. Killer Instinct 3 + hd remakes of 1 and 2….

Will be awesome but instead MS has forced Rare to develop Kinect shovelware

    3. Mech Assault, with the drop ships ( I loved bringing in the ammo doing mech pick ups/drops)

Instead MS will give you Halo on a yearly basis.

  127. dans303:

    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2011-06-08-nintendo-shares-fall-after-wii-u-revealfall

Nintendo shares fall to 5 year low after Wii U reveal

Nintendo’s share price has hit its lowest value in five years following the unveiling of the Wii U device.

That’s according to Bloomberg, which noted a 7.5 per cent drop in the price to ¥16,610 (around £125). More than 1.67 million shares changed hands yesterday, compared to the daily average of 724,000.

“There were high expectations from the new version of the Wii and this fell far short,” said analyst Yusuke Tsunoda.

“People had expected to see something more at a big event like the E3, but there wasn’t really anything more than what’s already reported.”

Nintendo stocks had already taken a blow earlier this year, when concerns over supply of the 3DS and the impact of the Japanese earthquakes made investors cautious, pushing stock to its lowest in two years.

  128. phranctoast:

    “I did :)
I also read Sucker Punch is not developing it.”

Has me a little bit worried, but how hard should it be to follow the Sly formula?

Ready at Dawn did well with the PSP GOW’s.

  129. Godless:

I think the tablet thing could sell the wii u

it makes it a valuable tool for kids learning to spell and write. it will no doubt get a load of DS type games ported over to the superior hardware.

I think it could be interesting having a main screen and a secondary screen handheld, just depends what the game Devs make of it.

Power wise, I had expected it to out perform the 360 & PS3 if only just, the fact that they are launching a console with comparable power to a 6 year old machine is disappointing.

Still a year to go, things could change a little before then, only once productions starts there is no turning back.

I wonder if this machine even needs to be plugged into a TV. I bet lots of parents may like the idea of the kids not hogging the living room TV while gaming. I wonder if games may be playable via the hand set only?

  130. Roca.:

    @Godless
what grade will you give each conference?

  131. phranctoast:

I want to know peoples feelings on Wii U but we’re still waiting on an official topic.

  132. Roca.:

About 80% of ppl on my friend list were playing Infamous 2 yesterday.

Just wondering which path you guys are taking – Hero or Evil?

I resterded the game yesterday 2 times because I could not decided. I read Evil has more powerful powers but for some reason it felt strange seeing Cole shooting red lighting so early in the game – blue light looks much better for the first playthrough.

Then I restarted it again (a 3rd time) because I forgot to set the difficulty on hard.

  133. phranctoast:

Starting on Good. My hard run will be Evil.

I wasn’t able to import my infamous save.

  134. Roca.:

To clear things up, I meant about 80% ‘of the ppl who were online’ were playing Infamous 2.

    btw k12online1 is a trophy whore ;)
Level 18 and over 3K trophies

    @Phranc
now that you mention it, I didn’t the option to import your save, or to collect the trophy from the original game…I’ll look into it.

  135. phranctoast:

Me and Carlb just got to level 13. Infamous 2 just backlogged me even more.

I’m almost finished with Mafia 2 and Tomb Raider anniversary.

  136. Godless:

LOL @ trophy whore. . I love that phrase ;)

  137. Godless:

    Roca

I’ve not seen enough of any of the conferences to judge, I’ve only looked at some highlights.

My guess is Sony had a lot more to show than either of the others.

I would like to know more about the wii u specifications. I can’t believe Nintendo are being so vague with them. .makes me think nothing is set in stone yet.

  138. Roca.:

looking at the size of the Wii u and at the controller. I can’t tell it won’t have crazy specs because Nintendo always like to keep their at a competitive price..and the size of it won’t allow for a whole anyways.

The controller is my only issue but other than that I’m going to hold my judgement until I see some games running on it.

I wonder if that Zelda footage was running on a PS3 ;) (since Nintendo say Wii U trailers were running on other consoles)

  139. Roca.:

3DS showed some cool games but the graphics and the price (and the lack of trophieS) will keep me away from it.

When I heard Shinobi was coming to the 3DS I was almost tempted to get it but after looking at the graphics I was really disappointed. Xperia Play can do better, not to mention PS Vita (for the same price)

  140. jojo29:

    @godless
Forza 4 does lok good….for an on rails racer…but, ill hold criticism till it releases….but if it is on rails, graphics wont mean a damn thing…

Forza 3 vs gt5, I have extreme fun playinf gt the sim…..I’ve played forza 3, (remember my bro not only owns a 360 he’s a HUGE racinf fan) I just didnt dig it, or liked the control

  141. Roca.:

Sony’s statement of what I was saying yesterday (to put PS Vita to similar use as the Wii U controller:

“It is very interesting the ways that Nintendo went with Wii U, and I was surprised it wasn’t exactly as it had been rumoured.

Already people are starting to ask about linking Vita and PS3 to do something similar, in terms of using two screens, and having controls on the screen. That’s very interesting, and we will have to experiment.

Lots of the things that developers of Vita games are doing, as you may have seen, is experimenting with connectivities between Vita and PS3.

The Wipeout [2048] team came up with their cross play ideas, and the other Vita teams have come up with ways of playing with two systems. It’s just a matter of time, as we provide the SDKs to developers so they can make use of both PS3 and Vita, and they might come up with something interesting.”

  142. CAD:

I see some critism above I will have to read but I just wanted to say that the Vita (Stupid Name) looks very good. Too bad I’m not into handhelds. I’m hearing some gripes about how it feels in hand and that the touch sensitive panels on the back get in the way but overall it’s impressive. I just wonder how it will fair with all the smartphones.

  143. CAD:

    Barbabe

I’m not running out to buy the Wii U that’s for sure. I need to see the games first but it will start getting the same multiplatform games that exsist on the 360 and PS3. With that in mind I don’t think you should discount this new console. It will have the newest tech and the ideas pesented in the video are awesome with the new tablet. If games start taking advantage of this making a difference in the way you play the same game just like what Kinect is doing for the 360 then I will be hoping on the band wagen. Besides I already have 3 Wiimotes so I can consider my self invested already and it’s backwards compatible so that’s even better.

  144. dans303:

    “btw k12online1 is a trophy whore ;)
Level 18 and over 3K trophies”

    But only 19 platinums – God he’s shit! ;)

“Me and Carlb just got to level 13.”

    I’m catching up with you then . . . :D

  145. SW:

    Lets face it now.

Metroid, Zelda, Mario. Nintendo will wheel ‘em out and I’ll buy the WiiU, and the gf will roll her eyes…

Ummm What was I supoose to eat and what was your point. I know the 360 headset can do voice controls. Anyone who played End War know this. There is a new dashboard coming so who knows. At the moment though it makes no sense because there is a seperate menu for Kinect. If you used it you would get it but you really don’t have a clue what your talking about.

  150. CAD:

The man is a idiot. Right now the industry is doing the I don’t want to change thing. The more poeple come in contact with Motion control the more they will embrace it. Motion is cool no matter what you think. All the core Kinect games coming will slowly break down the stupid thought process against it when people get more familiar. Anyone who say I don’t know why I have to say Xbox before a commnad is executed is just stupid. Mind you I was watching netflix last night and I was talking on the phone to a buddy about the xbox and everytime I said the word Xbox in the conversation the 360 reacted. Imagine if it just reacted to any word, that would be a problem.

  151. Barnabe Jones:

I have voice control on my phone. wowzers!

It’s easy to embrace on-the-rails games, and casual mini games when you don’t have any choice in the matter. M$ has the Xbots in a tight spot.

It’s also easy to hate when the cool stuff is not coming from the console that you support. I’ve dreamed of this stuff when I was a kid mostly for fighting games but I never thought about all this other stuff that is possible. Why should I hate on Technology that works and is super cool. I loved Time Crysis in the arcade and I never once though it was stupid that I never actually moved my character. It’s only on the web that you get stupid comments about on rail like it’s a bad thing. Haters are going to hate.

I don’t think anyone here has bashed the tech and potential behind Kinect, when implemented correctly, I.e, Dance Central, its a damn fun device and fun way to play games, I’m actually excited for my bro to pick up DC2, as I thoroughly enjoyed DC…

The problem is, MS is alienating the crowd that put them where they are at, the hardcore gamer crowd. Ill admit, this gen, I don’t give a flying fuck about “early stage” motion gaming, meaning this gen, I just want games, good gams, not concepts, not what could bes and definitely not potential, its too late in the game for me to wait out on potential that is NOT possible with current tech, so ill wait it out till next gen, meanwhile enjoying real games, built around a control scheme that works, not a control scheme where I wish its potential is here…and really…for fighting games, shooters….good fucking luck replacing m/kb or controllers….no amount of motion controls within the next 10 years will be able to compete on a professional level….until it does, controllers will be the standard

  160. twilight:

    Jojo,
I prefer the standard controller for games. I have never been a fan of any motion control device. I was just making a generalized statement. I was just stating that the Kinect is good for people who are into this type of controller. I won the Xbox360 with the Kinect at work last Christmas holiday.
I kept the Xbox360 and gave the Kinect away to a family member. I just didn’t really get into the Kinect.
    Ncaissie,
Hey, you forgot the “”flop.” Lol. I am not bothered by this a bit. Twilight “flip flop.”
Anyways, I can’t decide what 3D t.v. brand to go with. I am ditching the Pansonic plasma t.v. I gave plasma a try for the first time buy I just don’t care for plasma t.v.’s. You have a cool tv set up. I would buy one but it’ll be probably be a lot more then I want to spend. I am getting one of the led tv’s because they are on sale this week. Both sets come with the glasses so I don’t have to pay extra for the glasses. I just have to decide on which tv.

  165. Barnabe Jones:

    Cad,

Trust me, I don’t hate new tech.

I’m not really even against “non hardcore” games. Heck, I think I’m the only person on this site who’s admitted to playing and enjoying Just Dance.

Long story short, my take on Wii U is basically this, “hey guys, we finally got caught up to the current generation. Ipads are popular, and our new “innovative” controller is like that.”

That’s great and all, but this current generation is going to be over pretty soon. Too little, too late.

And if it has the same games as PS3, why would I want to play with a bulky, awkward, expensive controller?

  166. Barnabe Jones:

    ncassie,

I’ve played around with it, and it works great. I don’t really use it that much though. It’s kind of silly to dictate a text message. It kind of defeats the whole purpose of a text.

And for Maps and the Web, I just type out of habit.

  167. ncaissie:

Exactly. I don’t know anyone who uses voice on the phone.

  168. Godless:

I think Mike must be struggling to find anything nice to say about the New Wii ;)

or maybe just digging a little to see if he can find us anything about the dammed thing other than it looks like the end result of an electronic orgy between a wii mote, a PSP and an ipad, and that the controller looks bigger than the console itself.

I’m hoping the controller will be wireless in the finished version, and won’t have the industrial umbilical cord of the version on show.

  169. phranctoast:

    @CAD

What I’m talking about is MS forcing Kinect on people that feel like using voice controls.

It’s more acceptable for the User interface as the UI also uses motion not supported by a mic.

However for games this is far from acceptable.

I feel MS is forcing Kinect down peoples throats for functionality achievable without it.

Would you be happy to find out that voice control dialog decisions in Mass Effect 3 is a Kinect only feature?
How about when you PS3 version allows the same voice control decisions via headset and 360 is limited to support that only with Kinect?

I realize it’s pure speculation, but none of you can tell me it doesn’t already smell like that’s what MS is cooking.

That’s what you could ‘EAT’ CAD. MS poor cooking ;)

  170. Roca.:

    @Phrac
I figured out why we didn’t get the option to import Infamous saved file.

  171. phranctoast:

My save file oddly enough wasn’t 100% and it should have been. I platinumed the damn game.

  172. Roca.:

Well, if on your ‘last’ playthrough you did not completed/obtained all the side quest, missions, blast shards, dead drops & stuns then the saved file won’t say it’s 100% completed. my last saved files say 60% even though I platted the game but that’s because I compleated the main story missions on Evil and didn care for dead drops, shards, side missions, etc.

Anyways, I noticed I was not getting the option to import my saved file becasue I had deleted the “game data” from the system and even though the save file for Infamous is save on my HDD it appears Infamous 2 reads it from the game data file.

Once I loaded Infamous 1 and installed the game data I was able to import my data.

  173. phranctoast:

Lame. I borrowed Infamous. I guess It will be my other Downloadable title.

I ended at 91%. I think I missed dead drops. Were they required for the plat?

  174. Roca.:

I think so, if so you must have gotten them in your first playthrough then.

  175. ncaissie:

Sony never replied to my email about infamous not being an option for me to download. Anyone else in your house have an account phranc?

  176. phranctoast:

That’s strange then. My infamous 2 save should be 100% then.

I have multiple accounts myself ncaissie for other regions. My roomate and my girlfriend use my account my usually for netflix and not for gaming.

  177. Roca.:

“That’s strange then. My infamous 2 save should be 100% then”

    @Phranc
you completed everything on you last playthrough?

  178. ncaissie:

I have downloaded my games but need to upgrade my hdd. Will I be able to redownload them?

  179. Roca.:

It seems that you collected all the dead drops on your second playthrough but you didn’t collect all the Blast Shard becasue you already got the trophy for it on your first playthrough (Trophy app comes in handy)

    Phranc
2/07/2010 collect all negative karma upgrade
    2/08/2010 100% of shards
2/08/2010 Beat the game on Infamous
5/01/2010 Collect all Dead Drops in Historic Distric
    5/10/2010 Platinum

  180. k12online1:

LOL im not really much of a trophy hunter, like I only have 19 platinum’s. I might start tho =).

  181. phranctoast:

I used one save file. That’s kind of confusing. I recall the shards being my last trophy.

  182. phranctoast:

    “Phranc
2/07/2010 collect all negative karma upgrade
    2/08/2010 100% of shards
2/08/2010 Beat the game on Infamous
5/01/2010 Collect all Dead Drops in Historic Distric
    5/10/2010 Platinum”

    You app may be off.

    I have:

5/10/2010 collect all negative karma upgrade
    5/5/2010 100% of shards
5/9/2010 Beat the game on Infamous
4/28/2010 Collect all Dead Drops in Historic District
    5/10/2010 Platinum

    http://www.yourgamercards.net/profiles/phranctoast/85/inFamous

  183. Roca.:

    @Phranc
    “I used one save file”

once you start a your second playthroug it will overwrite over your previous playthrough stats and progression if you use one save file.

I have to save file and my Hero file says 100% and the Evil one says 60% or something (because I skip all the optional quest/objectives and collectives)

Looking at your trophy list you I can tell you collected all the shards during your first playthrough.

  184. Roca.:

    “You app may be off”

oops, I listed the wrong dates.
for some reason I listed the dates for the wrong trophies.

Here is what you might have missed:

1/31/2010 take over all therritory in the Neon District
2/8/2010 take over all therritory in the Warren
2/8/2010 take over all therritory in the Historry District
2/8/2010 beat the game as a Hero

Seems like you completed all the side mission during your first playthrough and that’s why your second playthrough file doesn’t say it’s 100%

  185. ncaissie:

“im not really much of a trophy hunter”
He didn’t say you were. He said you were a trophy ‘whore’

  186. k12online1:

@ ncaissie Same thing, the reason I have so trophies is because I have over one disc games and over one downloadable games.

  187. Roca.:

    one or one hundred?

  188. k12online1:

One hundred for both lol. This site needs a edit button.

  189. Roca.:

and you also have alot of free time.

  190. oldschool1987:

Any one want this redeeming code for the Duke Nukem Forever Beta?

    TG3B-8FNP-LCBL

Fight over it, got the game today. Too many games this month I’ve ordered, it’ll take me a long, long time to complete them all. Bought Duke, Infamous 2, Splinter Cell HD, Ocarina 3D and Fear 3 lol. Don’t know why I do it to myself.

  191. oldschool1987:

I used to be a trophy whore, kind of not arsed as much anymore. I sed to get about 2 plats a month, now I’ll just go for it if it’s not too time consuming lol. 29 ain’t to bad though ;)

  192. oldschool1987:

    used*

  193. k12online1:

I went to online school this year ( k12online) and I was able to game during school time ( still got good grades too). Now I might go find a job or hang out with friends for the summer, but for the next 2 weeks im gaming!

  194. Roca.:

I try hard to get platinum if I really enjoy the game… I don’t play shitty games for platinums tho – Terminator, Hanna Montana, Harry Portter, etc

But as oldschool said, if they are too time consuming I won’t go for it as they are so many games coming out this year that plat’ing games will make stay waaay behind.

  195. Roca.:

    @k12online1
so you don’t have a job but somehow you still have over 200 games (retail and downloadable)?

    I’m smelling a pirate.

  196. k12online1:

@ Roca I hate hate hate pirates! My parents buy them, that why I really want a job to buy stuff myself.

  197. oldschool1987:

I must admit Roca I platted Termintator lmao. My cousine lent it me saying it ain’t as bad as reviews make out …i believed him.

  198. k12online1:

I do have more games for xbox, xbox 360,game cube,wii,ds,gba,ps1psp,ps2 but I never really played/play those just my ps2, ps3 and 360 (not much now).

  199. phranctoast:

Once I get Gamefly I’ll give Terminator a shot.

  200. oldschool1987:

Btw I missed day 2 and 3 of E3. What do those days consist of, is it announcements or just demo playing?

Who won E3 this year as well? I missed most the announcements.

  201. Roca.:

    @oldschool
    Sony won for 3 reasons

    1. They had the most content
    2. Uncharted 3 rocked! NG said U3 has won over 20 E3 awards already.
    3. PS Vita launched date and a jaw-dropping price announced

  202. k12online1:

    Yeah Sony hands down.

  203. k12online1:

Ok guys im going to go see a movie cya.

  204. oldschool1987:

I seen the gameplay clip for Uncharted 3. The section on the boat where it sinks around you. That blew me away.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t think any game would beat Gears 3 this year for that gameplay clip they shown but Uncharted easily blew me away! Never seen graphics like it, best looking game I’ve ever seen.

  205. dans303:

“The section on the boat where it sinks around you. That blew me away.”

It tops the train level already for me – and I haven’t even played it!

  206. phranctoast:

I agree. I really didn’t expect to be floored by their demo.

It looks to one up U2 in every possible way.

    Way to go Naughty Dog!

  207. ncaissie:

“Once I get Gamefly I’ll give Terminator a shot.”

Hmm, I recall someone giving carlB (and myself) a hard time for not supporting the devs.

    So what has changed?

  208. Godless:

Just seen some of the clips for UC3 another stunning looking game. a lot of good games coming..

  209. ncaissie:

I don’t like how they went on about how awesome they are for making that level move while your playing it. It was done in God of War 3 and better if you ask me. In gow 3 they flip you upside down and right side up again a few times. It just felt so epic fighting on the titans. I will be getting U 3 but so far it doesn’t look that much better than U 2 yet.

  210. oldschool1987:

If anyone is interested, Duke Nukem is fucking brilliant. Sure the graphics may look a little 2007 but the gameplay makes up for it, it’s always changing up.

No one used that redeem code for the PSN I posted yet?

  211. phranctoast:

    “So what has changed?”

Did I give you hell for renting? I don’t recall that. I may have for buying used games for $5 less than new and not supporting the devs, or for pirating (if you do).

You’ll have to provide me with that link. I rented the first GOW and didn’t actually own it until the GOW collection. As well as all the PS2 Ratchet and Clank games.

  212. Roca.:

I didn’t know Phranc rents games.

  213. Roca.:

    @CAD
    http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/06/star-wars-kinect-hands-on-watch-the-train-wreck-in-action.ars

  214. phranctoast:

I mostly buy, but I seriously can’t keep up anymore with everything I want so I have no choice.

  215. ncaissie:

Thou gave me hell for buying used games.
$5 is a lot when the game is $10. Lol I would never spend 50-60 on a used game.

  216. ncaissie:

I have rented games when they come with promotion booklets or something.

  217. ncaissie:

I’m thinking of joining one also. I think there is one in canada called gamefly or something.

  218. twilight:

There are just too many games coming out. Duke Nukem and Alice come out the same day. It’s insane. Also, there’s still Catherine, Deux Ex, Supremacy Mma, Battlefield, Fifa, Pro Evolution, more Kratos, and of course, the dashing Nathan Drake will be returning for yet another adventure.

  219. twilight:

Sony owned E 3 this year. Microsoft was second and I could care less about Nintendo. I give Nintendo a F.

  220. jojo29:

@twilight I somwhat agree with your ranking

Here’s the thing…I really dig the new wii u…but, here’s my dilemna….pulling out thwt controller in any social enviroment other than japan….its gonna give the impression of a kiddy toy….and that’s a no no for me as a gamer we already have that “nerd” stigma, I don’t need it reaffirmed….and that’s overall nintendos problem…their style is way too kiddy….don’t get me wrong I love me som zelda, mario and metroid, but ninty really needs to catch up with the times….

  221. Roca.:

Nintendo didn’t show a whole lot about the Wii U but they did showed a solid lineup for the 3DS – Super Mario, Luigi’s Mansion 2, Kid Icarus, Star Fox 64, Mario Kart, Zelda 4 Swords etc. That alot more then Gears 3 and Forza 4 for the 360 (exclusive wise)

Too bad I don’t think the 3DS is worth the price.

  222. Barnabe Jones:

Top 10 reasons not to get a Wii U:

    10. It’s a current gen machine. This gen is almost over.

    9. You already own a PS3 and/or 360.

    8. The game reel shown at E3 was made up of PS3 and 360 games. None of the trailers shown were running on Wii U.

    7. You’ve already played Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, Mario, and Zelda 1,000 times already.

    6. The controller will give you carpal-tunnel.

    5. Everyone at Blorge will laugh at you.

    4. The system only supports one Wii-Pad.

    3. You already own a Wii that you’ve only played for five hours, and now it sits around collecting dust.

    2. The PS4 will be here soon.

    1. It’s an overpriced piece of shit.

  223. harry sachz:

Anyone else been noticing that it’s the biggest gaming news week of the year, but there’s been no new posts for days?

Something seems fishy, my guess is that Mike/Dave haven’t been paid for their previous blogs and are on strike. I love a good conspiracy.

  224. Barnabe Jones:

    0. Who would buy stuff from a company that sold “New” Super Mario Wii, and Mario All Starts at full retail price?

  225. oldschool1987:

Just checked IGN and there is no Duke Nukem review yet :/

Surely reviews have to be released before or around the same time as the game is out? I’ve been playing DNF all day now and the game is better than I expected, except graphically it is a bit poor, that’s the only downside for me.

  226. twilight:

    Jojo,
The last time Nintendo device that I played was the Gamecube. I actually didn’t mind the Gamecube at all.
    Bj,
    Lol. Excellent points.
    Oldschool,
The Duke Nukem review should be out soon.

  227. SW:

@old – It’s just going to end up getting mediocre reviews anywhoos.

  228. Roca.:

    I agree with SW.

IGN is probably figuring out how to implement a system for negative review scores just for DNF ;)

  229. Roca.:

    @oldschool
    here is your first review

    Joystiq: 2/5 or 4/10 or 40/100

    http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/duke-nukem-forever-review-fail-to-the-king-baby/

  230. oldschool1987:

    Lol @ Roca.

Yeah I’ve seen the reviews :p tbh I expected it as I got furthar into the game. I love it but it has some faults, namely the graphics and the long load times. I reckon most reviewers hate it for the toilet humour, I however find that funny, I don’t mind admitting my sense of humour spans all types lol.

  231. jojo29:

    @oldschool/roca
For ign if it isn’t a halo game, it wont get good reviews at all….ign is only good for media such as vids and pics…..its too bad they are the biggest gaming site, they are like the activision of gaming sites…I never bother to read their reviews at all….in faft I detest ign, they are the perfect example of what is wrong with the gaming industry….

  232. oldschool1987:

@ jojo: Yeah, I’m normally first to slate IGNorant for their biased reviews and bullshit statements, especially from the 360 Crysis 2 review:

‘The best looking console game is on the 360′

What possessed them to write that bullshit!? lol

Still, they gave Uncharted 2 a 10/10 but I know that Uncharted 3 will get a 8.5 or a 9 at the most. It’s all they give out for PS3 games now.

  233. CarlB:

“If Sony did this…surprise, surprise… it would also be an asshole move.”

If sony added voice control as an option it would be an asshole move? My point is, if XMB control is so “simple”, then sony would have already added it as an option to be controlled by headset or Eye.

  234. Roca.:

    @CarlB
if you want voice control so bad then get Kinect. I’m sure voice control is worth $150

  235. CarlB:

    @Roca
If you hate the idea of having voice control as an option for PS3 or 4 so much then you better just stick with a PS1. I’m sure you won’t mind as long as it has the playstation brand on it like your forehead. I haven’t spent $100+ dollars on Move or Kinect like some people here already have (you), but I guess to each his own. Like I said before this shit came on the market last year, traditional controllers are still king and will be for a long time to come. I’d just appreciate the option of having voice control for the XMB on my PS3.

  236. phranctoast:

“If sony added voice control as an option it would be an asshole move? My point is, if XMB control is so “simple”, then sony would have already added it as an option to be controlled by headset or Eye.”

If Sony added voice control with the Move (PSeye only) ignoring the headset it would be an asshole move. Jesus Christ!!! Sometimes you really are deliberately obtuse.

  237. Roca.:

I spend $100+ on the Move for the games and never expected voice control because as phranc said voice control should not be attached to the PS Eye or Kinect.

I guess you had the Microsoft brand on your forehead when you pay over 2x as much as I did on XBL Gold with no voice control, no real value to it and no extra content.

  238. phranctoast:

    Child of Eden reviews:
    100% Joystiq
    85% IGN

Joystiq says it’s a 90 minute game from start to finish.

That and a $50 asking price equals no buy.

  239. CarlB:

“Jesus Christ!!! Sometimes you really are deliberately obtuse.”

I already said with Eye and or with a headset as an option. Don’t be deliberately dim.

    @roca,
sorry to disappoint, I don’t pay for XBL Gold, and haven’t even really used 360 at all this year.

  240. phranctoast:

And my point is it’s “simplicity” is not an debatable topic.

Sony’s choice not to make the XMB voice controlled is not limited to hardware. Voice control and voice recognition are both proven to work through headsets.

My ‘point’, which you ignore with each new response, is if Sony or MS make VC/VR only for Move or Kinect ignoring headsets it’s an asshole move on their part.

There’s intelligent ways to counter my point, none of which you’ve even attempted.

Maybe trying to prove that Kinect is indeed needed for VC/VR would be a good start. I however don’t believe it is.

All the tech in Kinect from multidirectional voice tracking, echo cancellation and background noise suppression are there for a device that sits at least 10 feet from the end user. Both the Sony and MS headset have background noise suppression and the other Kinect features are not necessary for a device sitting next to your mouth.

Let’s go out on a limb, and say MS’s VC/VR software advancements surpass that of anything Sony has done. Simplicity is on the table.

There still is no reason to not offer that library to other headset only 360 owners when all it would require is a firmware update.

  241. CarlB:

Phranc, I would be the first to agree with you if Sony or Nintendo already had the capability of their main console interface menu being voice controlled via headsets. They do not. They do not even have it built into their primary motion control systems.

Because they do not it is safe to say this is not such a “simple” thing that can be done with ease, else it would have been done years ago with each console’s launch.

Sony’s “choice” probably has more to do with worrying about getting what they already have to work properly while incrementally adding features that they believe to take priority, and of course cost is probably another factor.

I think we both can agree Sony could do this just as well with Eye or a headset, yet they choose not to. Regardless, I wouldn’t have the nerve to say them not putting XMB voice control in as yet is an “asshole move”. Things like this just take time.

As long as Sony and Nintendo choose not to add it, it is an asshole move to criticize the one company that does.

As for utilizing it through Kinect first, I think it is also reasonable to assume they should focus on getting one device (and it’s particular software) to work with voice control first. That they chose the premiere device they have already spent millions developing and advertising first is not really all that surprising, is it? Kinect and controller free gaming as an option for the future has already been stated as a key component in MS strategy, so voice control might as well work with it first in conjunction with motion control.

Focusing voice control with the traditional headset first would be counterproductive to consolidating controller free design in the future. “Controller” here meaning something that you wear and or hold. Getting voice control to work as well as possible with the primary motion control system first, then adding it to other peripherals later just makes sense, even though it may not please all gamers that already utilize headsets.

  242. phranctoast:

    rational discussion kicks ass.

  243. phranctoast:

I think you may mistake my intent when I say “asshole move”.

focusing on the motion devices while ignoring already established ones to push a product when it could be done without it bothers me.

It’s in line with say Child of Eden not having controller support too and only having motion control (not the case btw).

Kinect has proved itself capable of selling itself for what it is. Piggy backing features on it as a Kinect only option when proved that the same functionality can exist without is troubling.

While you and godless have a point of this feature being better without the bother of wearing a headset, to me it appears to be the start of a poor practice and go beyond just the UI.

I think you’ll soon see games that could work with voice control through a headset being made as a KInect only feature demanded by MS to better sell their product.

  244. CarlB:

I see what you are saying phranc… I just think it’s too soon to label it as a poor practice as it has just barely came out (is the main menu now controllable, or yet to be? I honestly don’t know).

The major reason why I transitioned from 360 to PS3 was MS’ practice with XBL&G compared to PSN&P, and while I wouldn’t put it past them to deliberately not make headsets functional w/voice control for the rest of this gen and perhaps even next… I don’t think it will be that big of a deal either way, and if there is a functional advantage to it, I doubt they will.

Considering MS’ primarily Kinect focus, I think they would bring in a mote with buttons&/joystick like Wii/Move before they make games working with a headset and Kinect.

  245. phranctoast:

low and behold. Mass effect 3 to use Kinect and the voice features won’t be available via headset.

    http://uk.kotaku.com/5810138/mass-effect-3s-new-voice-commands-are-xbox-360+only-and-heres-why

I think the excuse is rather poor.

  246. CarlB:

Well then there should be no reason Sony can’t implement it in their version.

  247. CarlB:

Sorry… posted before I read this part:

“Kinect’s internal hardware is what makes it possible—or at least much easier to get voice commands working—not just its microphones.”

  248. phranctoast:

““Kinect’s internal hardware is what makes it possible—or at least much easier to get voice commands working—not just its microphones”

    Yeah. We know that’s BS.

Kinect hardware literally had absolutely nothing to do with this.

Unless, by hardware they mean software. 360′s with Kinect have a different firmware downloaded that has the voice control/voice recognition library.

MS CAN make use of that same library on non kinect 360′s but they’re selling Kinect as that.

  249. CarlB:

Sounds so simple. I wonder why Sony doesn’t have XMB voice control already.

  250. phranctoast:

Maybe Sony never set up such a vast and complex voice library.

MS may be years ahead of Sony in this regard. Who knows, as it’s just speculation.

MS however has proven that they have it, and it works, yet the will not share with the rest of the 360 users, even though it’s entirely possible.

    Asshole move.
