Sony E3 2011 PlayStation recap – exclusives galore

Sony just had its E3 press conference today and the company made a ton of announcements. The entire press conference was about three hours long, filled with new game reveals across the PS3, PSN and the PS Vita (formerly NGP).

Sony’s press conference was a joy to watch as it was definitely a fan service to hardcore gamers. The manufacturer stayed focused on delivering hardcore gaming revelations in moderate doses throughout the entire conference.

Here is the run down:

  • Sony revealed the Resistance 3 Doomsday Edition – contains Move and PS Eye along with a copy of Resistance 3
  • God of War Origins Collection – remastered PSP GoW games for the PS3 officially detailed
  • Shadow of the Colossus and ICO collection  remastered in HD – officially detailed
  • PlayStation Branded 24” 3D TV bundle includes copy of Resistance 3, 3D glasses, HDMI cable, has special tech for split screen cooperative play in 3D all at a low affordable price pint of $499
  • Eve Online developer announces new PS3 exclusive FPS game titled Dust 514. Game will be cross-platform play compatible across PC and PS Vita. Release dated for Spring 2012
  • Bioshock Infinite head, Ken Levine discuss new PS Vita game that takes place in Infinite universe. PS3 version of Infinite comes with free copy of Bioshock on same disc.
  • PS3 version of Saints Row 3 to come with exclusive content, and game mode.
  • New Star Trek game announced for PS3
  • EA took stage to announce PS3 exclusive content for SSX (Mount Fuji level), Need for Speed: The Run (extra cars) and Battlefield 3 (comes with Battlefield 1943 on same disc)
  • PlayStation Vita official name unveiled, and priced finally. Wifi PS Vita model – $249 (competitively priced with 3DS) and 3G/Wifi model – $299. Release planned for Fall 2011 still.
  • Street Fighter X Tekken announced for PS Vita, exclusive PS character Cole from inFamous to be a playable character
  • LittleBigPlanet Vita announced
  • Wipeout 2048 announced, supports crossplay with up to 8 players across Vita and PS3
  • PS Vita to support Party voice chat
  • Uncharted: Golden Abyss for PS Vita demonstrated
  • PS3 exclusive Action RPG title, Ruin revealed and detailed – crossplay across PS Vita and PS3. Defend lair against real-time attacks
  • New Sly full title announced – Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time

The amount of exclusive games and content revealed at Sony’s press conference is mind boggling. Sony revealed early last year that the manufacturer has been quietly working with third party devs on securing exclusive content that will continue to manifest in the coming years.

It looks like Sony has been working various studios and publishers on getting either an extra level, character, story content, and in some cases an entire extra game on the same disc.

The number of HD remasters is also a fan service to the hardcore gamers that fell in love with some of the past PlayStation classics.

Stay tuned for Microsoft’s press conference recap soon.

    Well I have got to say it. I wonder if Ivan will get a life!

    Actually I wonder if any of you saddo playstation knob jockeys will get a life.

    Oh and no pun intended.

  2. phranctoast:

    Uncharted 3 owned this show.

  3. Rhino:

    LOL Andrew, why get a life when there is so much great upcoming content to play.

  4. Rhino:

    Ok so $299USD = $279AU…therefore Vita is going to cost approx $350AU-$400AU

  5. Rimmer:

    “Eve Online developer announces new PS3 exclusive FPS game titled Dust 514. Game will be cross-platform play compatible across PC and PS Vita. Release dated for Spring 2012″
    That doesn’t make sense. Don’t you mean “console exclusive” seeing as it is on the PC too?

  6. phranctoast:

    obviously.

  7. phranctoast:

    Anyone find it weird that the PS3 gets along with the PC better than the 360. Can anyone name another cross platform game other than Shadowrun on the 360?

  8. k12online1:

    This conference was epic, my personal highlight’s were Uncharted 3, Uncharted Golden Abyss and Sly 4 =). Mostly everything was awesome too tho.

  9. Roca.:

    PS Vita for $249-$300 = Day 1 for me.

  10. Godless:

    I wish people would stop including the PC when referring to console exclusives, I don’t give a flying monkey shit about the PCs games available,

    Why the hell would I pay £1,000 to have a PC to play a few games on that a £150 or £250 console can do almost as well.

    I wonder if Sony will do any deals on PS3/PS vita games, if you want to get the same game on both platforms?

  11. Roca.:

    Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath and Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee will both be on the Vita and each game will support cross-platform cloud save functionality.

  12. phranctoast:

    “I wonder if Sony will do any deals on PS3/PS vita games, if you want to get the same game on both platforms?”

    Hopefully.

    It’ll probably be tied to once disc and an install. That way people without the PSV can’t flood the used market.

  13. phranctoast:

    Anyone think any other company will use the term transfarring or will it only be a Konami thing?

  14. Roca.:

    The transfering system from Kojima/Konami is outdate.

    What they showed for Ruin and what we have for Portal is more up-to-date and convenient.

  15. jojo29:

    @godless
    On your pc comment: exclusive means can only be found on x console and nowhere else, I.e halo, god of war….an example of non exclusive is gears of war, dcu online…

    Also, you might not give a flying fuck, but that’s okay, even though I’m getting bf3 on ps3, you wont get anywhere near the graphics that you have seen on ps3 lol let alone on the weak sauce 360…. in order to fully enjoy a game like bf3, a pure gaming pc is required, which I cannot wait for full on 64 player battles, so that I can come on the ps3 and mop the floor with you guys ;)

  16. jojo29:

    For me, aside from picking up every exclusive game for sony ( just got a nice raise) this year the titles I am most excited about are:
    Battlefield 3 ( ps3 and pc)
    Wipeout 2088 ( I’m a huge wipeout fan)

    Every ps3 exclusives ;)

    @phranc

    “Can anyone name another cross platform game other than Shadowrun on the 360?”

    FFXI

    The problem there is that MS wants to manage every aspect of the game servers, which is also why FFXIV wont be on 360 unless they change.

  19. Roca.:

    The multiplatform game from Insomniac did not impress me at all.

    Resistance 3 look awesome though!!
    This is what Resistance 2 shouldve been

  20. phranctoast:

    “FFXI”

    Oh yeah. Couldn’t PC,PS2, and 360 users all play together?

    “The multiplatform game from Insomniac did not impress me at all.”

    It’s Insomniac. It’ll be good. The trailer was just CGI, but the concept looks to blend some of the better qualities of R+C/Resistance with a 4 player Co op. It’ll be awesome if past Insomniac games are anything to go by.

  21. CON:

    Party Chat!!!! Finally!!!

    ………..for Vista…..I mean Vita

  22. ToshithegreaT:

    Why will there be party chat for vita but not ps3 ??

  23. Roca.:

    @CON
    you’re the only one going crazy about it.
    We all cared about Vita having a better lineup than the dying 360

  24. Roca.:

    @Toshi
    Why online gaming is free on PC, PS3, PSP, PS Vita, PS2, DS Lite, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, iPhone, Android Phones and Tablets but not on 360 ??

  25. MAK:

    Mr. Owl,
    “Why online gaming is free on PC, PS3, PSP, PS Vita, PS2, DS Lite, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, iPhone, Android Phones and Tablets but not on 360 ??”
    A one, a two, a three…..

    ….The world may never know ;)

  26. Roca.:

    Next thing we know, E-Readers have free online play before the 360 does ;)

  27. Ivan_PSP:

    I will be buying 2 PSV with 3G first day. And UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss will be my my first and and favorite PSV launch title.
    Xbox 360 is garbage PSV will kill that and 3DS.

  28. Godless:

    IVAN

    Why 2?

  29. ToshithegreaT:

    @Toshi
    Why online gaming is free on PC, PS3, PSP, PS Vita, PS2, DS Lite, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, iPhone, Android Phones and Tablets but not on 360 ??

    2roca

    why online being free has anything to do with party chat on vita. i guess party chat will be on ps3 as well as i personally dont why will they offer something on vita, that cud be easily done on ps3 as well

  30. phranctoast:

    I wish Vita is 4G. I’m not confident in 3G’s ability to play games competitively online.

    It feels way too 56K to me.

  31. Roca.:

    Vita does not charge for it…what are your excuse now for paying for it?

  32. Roca.:

    They went 3G because that’s pretty much the standard wireless speed around the world. That’s why they chose to use AT&T’s band becasue it’s the most popular band worldwide. It would easily work in Canada, Japan, Europe and US.

  33. CAD:

    My excuse for paying for it is because I have to. That being said, no other service comes close to offering the features that Xbox Live has for online gaming

  34. Godless:

    I have to agree with CAD on this for now.

    I’ve been trying to play online with the PS3 since it came back online, and it is Soooo Sloooww. .why the hell do all the games take so long to find a game to join.

    so far I’v tried
    Uncharted two. . fun but very slow to connect. fine once in the level playing but every time level ends another huge wait to start new level. . Why

    Wipeout HD, unable to connect to any games.

    Split second, very slow to find games, & won’t stay connected for more than maybe two races, then drops you mid race.

    and last night had great fun on burnout paradise untill i tried to play online then it all turned to ratshit, took forever to find a game, then it felt gaming back in the 36K modem days, it was awful.

    I kind of hope this is all still to do with PSN being bogged down and things will get better

    Now I know that not a huge line up of games, but all have been very poor, My PS3 is now hard-wired in my computer room, alongside the xbox & PC which both performed flawlessness online, so it’s nothing to do with my broadband.

    I have to say that if my online with the PS3 doesn’t get better, I will be signing back up to Live, because it just works, the way I would like my PS3 to work.

  35. phranctoast:

    I guess I’ve been very lucky.

    The worst online experience I’ve suffered with the PS3 was Warhawk beta. Luckily they fixed that game before release. The constant freezes that required a restart were a bit too much. Made me not want to play the game.

    I was playing U2 at my brohters house the other day online with no problems. The huge wait between levels are when players interact/vote on new maps/gametypes. etc. I don’t believe after the initial search for a server that there’s a long wait caused by the servers.

    I’ll ask my buddy about Wipeout HD. He’s been playing that ever since getting it from the welcome back package.

  36. phranctoast:

    It’s good that Gears 3 will support dedicated servers.

    I saw Cliffy B’s interview on G4 after the MS conference.

    It’s his stance is that dedicated servers are imperative to online gaming.

    XBlive may have more gaming features such as party chat, but Sony has them one upped by supporting dedicated serves on all first party/second party games.

    Even Cliffy B agrees with that. He called Gears 2 a broken mess online. Yes Cliffy B himself was ragging on the online portion of gears 2. Something you Xbots defended to death, the Creator of one of the most popular Xbox franchises is agreeing with Sony fans…

    Classic. :D

  37. phranctoast:

    If anyones interested on calling me out on this, the interview is the Cliffy B E3 Gears interview that showed him playing through against the Kraken like beast. It’s not the Ice T with Cliffy B interview.

    I can’t find it on You Tube but I’m sure it’s on G4.

  38. Roca.:

    It’s funny how Godless gets all thise network issues on PSN but we play online with no problem.

    Ask Birdman about SSFIV online play. 360 vs PS3?

    Also, When I tried to do co-op with splinter cell convition it took like 10 mins to find a match, and it wasn’t even the match I was looking for. I set the filter to “hard” and the second stage of the coop mission and it rerouted me to a different stage on normal difficulty becasue it couldn’t find the one I was looking for.

    PS3′s network is by far superior to anything Xbox offers. Lets compare the technical aspect of it:

    GT5, Motorstorm Apocalypse vs Forza 3:
    GT5 = 16 players online (32 while playing w/karts)
    Motorstorm = 16 players (4-player splitscreen online)
    Forza 3 = 8 players (lmao that’s half)

    Halo vs Resistance, Killzone & MAG:
    Resistance = 40 players
    Resistance 2 = 60 players (8 coop)
    Killzone 2 = 32 players
    Killzone 3 = 24 players
    MAG = 256 players
    Halo 3, ODST & Reach = 16 players (4 coop)

    Gears vs MGS4, Uncharted 2 & Socom 4
    MGS4 = 16 players
    Uncharted 2 = 10 players (3 coop)
    Socom 4 = 32 players (5 coop)
    Gears 1 = 4 players (2 coop)
    Gears 2 = 10 players (4 coop)

    Most of those games have alot more going on on PS3 and they still support way more player with no lag online. GT5 for example supports 2x more than Forza 3, with dynamic wather, night tracks, and 1080p res. Motorstorm has dynamic stage changing events during the race and still supports 2x more players.

  39. Godless:

    I’ve played Gears 2 a few times with buddies and never noticed any problems.

    I wonder if it’s one of those things that’s broken in the sense that it is badly implemented or poorly optimised but somehow still manages to works.

  40. phranctoast:

    From the creators mouth himself.

  41. phranctoast:

    What it really comes down to, and Roca’s post can be summed up nicely simply by stating this:

    dedicated servers > P2P servers

    end of.

  42. phranctoast:

    Feel happy that at least one XB exclusive game company shares this opinion….uhhhhh…I mean fact, and you’ll start experiences better online gameplay from those games that support this.
