Sony’s PSN Pass to combat used PS3 game sales
Video game publishers have been using the online pass system to combat the highly lucrative used video game market. It appears that Sony will be joining the growing number of publishers practicing the online pass.
As reported yesterday, a German site posted photos of a Resistance 3 PS3 bundle with a small logo with the words “PSN Pass.” This photo led many to speculate that Sony may be looking to experiment with a pass system. The online pass system will allow the original owner of the game access to complete functionality of the multiplayer modes.
From what we have seen in the past with THQ and EA, some of the features may not be available to those who buy the game second hand without the pass.
According to IGN, Sony confirmed that the company is experimenting with a similar system.
We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities.
This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.
The last part is interesting as the spokesperson seemed to indicate that those who purchase the game used may still have limited access to the online modes.
The spokesperson added, “this is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio.”
Its not surprising that Sony is experimenting with the online pass system, which has been reserved for third party game publishers. For a first party console manufacturer, Sony has an unusually large portfolio of video game IPs. Ubisoft is also said to be evaluating a similar system.

Ok this is just pure greed! So if I want to lend a game to a friend which I bought and paid for and now own, it is pretty much gimped with the online. Of course my friend can always but one of these codes for more money so they can play online too! What a rip off! I see this pissing off many people, myself included!

I’ve said it many times before, the industries main goal is to eliminate the second hand market, or at least kneecap it so that it is able to take a cut.
Next step for this will be, not just a pass to play online, but a licence to play the game full-stop, all games will require online registration before they can even be played.
read the small print on your game, you don’t own it, you are buying the right to play it, and you are supposedly not allowed to sell or lend the game to anyone.
Before next gen, second hand games will be a thing of the past.
This is not being pushed by Sony, this is a Software house driven thing, same thing will happen on live.

This is a load of crap. But I have an idea that will cost hardly anything and wont require much time or effort.
If we all get together and buy some managed servers we can create our own gaming network hub. Get some fiber optic links for some super fast lag free connections.
Then create a virtual meeting place where gamers can log into and chat/bait other gamers. Provide some social network features and maybe chuck in some streamed movies and free game demos (unless you’re sony who charge for a demo of GT5!).
Provide all this for free to the end gamer and bobs yer uncle we have an alternative to those nasty game companies ruthlessly trying to make us pay for products and services they have spent time and money producing and maintaining.

If this is anything like EA pass, and I believe it is, they already considered renters, and there’s a one time use per system code you can get from the website for free to use for a specific amount of time (7 days?)
The admonishes any concerns renters or people that borrow your games should have.

That and free DLC months after the product comes out as a deterrent to trade it in is also a good idea as far as I’m concerned.
Sony does do this, but only under PS plus it seems, so it’s not technically ‘free’.

Agreed, they give a nice return policy on used games (7-day rental) but man I will never buy a new hardware from gamestop. All other big companies will give you a full refound within 30-days for electronic devices. Gamestop will only exchange it for the same product.

This is why it is better to purchase big items from major stores. A good example of this would be my tv purchase. I took the Lg tv back and got the Samsung 3d tv. The 3d was incredible on the Lg tv but I just wasn’t pleased with the 2d picture quality on the Lg. Unlike purists, I am a huge fan of motion flow. There is no way I would ever turn the motion flow setting off. The motion flow and excellent video processing in Samsung tv’s create incredible picture quality.

Yeah, they only put stickers on open new display games here. All used games can be returned within 7 days. In fact, Gamestop has a return reason code of “didn’t like.” This is the main sales pitch that many Gamestop employees use to get people to buy used games over new games. A lot of people take advantage of this policy.

After re-reading your post SW i can see what you mean and it’s not just Capcom.
My opinion:
-Retailer specific presale DLC is completely fine with me, as long as the other characters are made avialable (for a fee) on the network in a reasonable amount of time.
-DLC is trickier. I think lots of DLC should be free. Free DLC shows you are supporting your game, and at the same time giving gamers a reason not to resell it. It’s win win.
-I have nothing on the ‘sell crippled games’ comment.

EA is pretty is handling this issue better than anyone else.
They offer tons of free DLC for most of its game (if you buy them new). While activision is charging $15 for its map packs BFBC2 got over 5 free map packs and many other extra goodies.
Same with Medal of Honor, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age, Need For Speed and many others. Titles from EA Sports (including your Fifa) are not as generous

Sorry, although im not trying to take anything away from Rugby at all, as it is a VERY tough sport, it by no means is “more” physically demanding than football, although i agree, ONLY DUE to the players NOT wearing pads, yes it ‘can’ be more dangerous in ONLY that aspect…Allow me to explain, as i did to birdy when he tried to argue basketball athletes > football athletes..
On the physically demanding aspect on why i believe Gridiron > Rugby:
The Offensive/Defensive linemen AVERAGE 6’4″ 300lbs….now that in itself is just the AVERAGE size of these guys, some can be smaller..some bigger…these monsters are also, on average, capable of running a 4/40 in 5.2 seconds….
To put the above in perspective, one of the fastest safeties in the league, taylor mays ( 6’3, 230lbs ) runs the 4/40 in 4.3 seconds….hes fast, but the linemen are no slouch, they could probably outrun you guys, birdman and myself…and they weigh in at 300lbs…imagine getting hit by these guys….<—collision sport american football is and i hope, just based on this, you can see and understand why the helmets and pads are neccessary…linebackers can be bigger and faster than these guys….running backs smaller but faster, but are like mini diessel trucks..
Again, im not trying to put Rugby down…but, American Football produces the worlds toughest, most agile, fastest, biggest and stronger athletes…in the world….overall

As much as I love (american) football and can respect the physical prowess of those athletes I would love to see some of them strap on some skates and hit the ice for a game of hockey! Now that would be an awsome game to watch.
Hockey players are pretty big, beefy guys too, and then they have all that equipment strapped on and then they zip around the ice on thin, sharp metal blades. We all know how dangerous those skates can be. A player had his neck sliced open last season.

I didn’t call them pussies, I countered CONvict’s stupid statements by simply mentining that rugby has rules against the type of hits, crushes, tackles that goes on in Football..then I mocked him and said “talking about pussies” since he brought the pussy brought first.

In all seriousness neither type of players are pussies at all…
CON is just the village idiot, as he obviously cannot put 2+2 together…take a 6’4″, 300lb man, sprinting at a 5.2 4/40 pace and you can understand why the pads are neccessary….
Rugby, yes they are running and moving all the time, but not at the above pace…Soccer players move all the time, specifically the mid fielders, but there are times where they are just ‘jogging’…in football there really is not jogging, each play, in order to maximize plays such as play actions, everyone must move at full on sprint speed…each and every play…
Again, im not trying to take away from rugby or soccer ( my absolute fav sport ) just gotta lay down the facts…
