SOE debuts PlanetSide 2 with a trailer at Fan Faire event
Sony Online Entertainment held a press conference in Las Vegas recently at its Fan Faire event. SOE unveiled Planetside 2 for the first time at the event.
It’s no secret SOE has been working on a sequel to the cult hit Planetside. When Planetside first came out it was the first of its kind offering a FPS experience on a MMO scale. There would be battles with five hundred players on a persistent world, with mechs and vehicles.
Creative director for Planetside 2, Matt Higby took center stage at SOE’s Fan Faire Press Conference to talk a little about the game. The three factions (Terran Republic, New Conglomerate, and Vanu Sovereignty) from the first game will also return in the sequel.

Higsby revealed that Planetside 2 became possible after the publisher created the Forgelight Engine. This engine allows thousands of players to battle each other on a massive scale.
He also revealed that territory will play a huge part in the war. The different empires will wage war in order to defend and take over territory. The territory will also change as different factions take over the area.
The certification tree will return with much more depth than seen before. The certification tree will impact weapons, customizations, and implants. New to Planetside 2 will be classes such as infantry, engineer and medics.
The game has only been announced for the PC so far.

“When Planetside first came out it was the first of its kind offering a FPS experience on a MMO scale.”
Eat this CAD, another example of how far back Sonys been bringing original, innovative titles

‘Eat this CAD’
He’ll just claim it’s a Halo copy.

The original Planetside was pretty sweet. Unfortunately when I tried it out I was trying to get into it a few years into it, plus my PC kinda sucked at the time, since this was before I built the PC I have now.

Just out of interest why does this pc title get a story yet I’ve not seen anything about:
Old republic
Any of the total war series
Football manager
Wow
All of these are potentially massive and I’m just naming a few, is it because Sony develop this by any chance?

@navysteve
WoW was mentioned last week, although really there is NO real new news regarding WoW. Its just business as usual there.
Football manager? Like anyone even cares about that?
Old Republic also was mentioned not long ago.
July 9th, 2011
@navysteve,
Yup, FahKinSuPah is correct.
We covered Old Republic last month here after Bioware let everyone demo it : http://gamer.blorge.com/2011/05/22/bioware-you-wont-go-back-to-wow-after-the-old-republic/
Planetside 2 is also a Fan Faire Convention debut news so it gets some press. up to this point it was classified as rumor.

Too bad Sony never dropped news of the original Planetside comming to PS3. That would have been a good move. Sony definately has the means to bring several of its online PC games like Planetside, Everquest and others, to PS3. The PS3 is more than powerful enough to play those games effectively.
In related news Sony announced a few weeks ago that its “Station Pass” was getting a price drop from $30 to $20. That news almost made me want to go back to Planetside

As always, Xbots always whining and crying..
Navysteve got owned by FahKin and Mike.
ohh btw…..Football manager, seriously?
July 9th, 2011
@FahKin
The station pass also gives access to all SOE’s MMOs. They are few good ones there. DCUO, Everquest, Star Wars Clone wars, etc
July 9th, 2011
@Roca
Exactly, and thats why I mentioned the price drop in the station pass. For $20 a month I would definately get my hands on DCUO and play that too.

Wtf is that? A Halo MMO?
I’m not getting sucked into that bs again. Spend $120 on a game then $45 on three months just to get cut off for over a month.
MMO’s are no fun anyway.
Anyone tried the sniper game? Any good? I love hunting down two or three guys on a huge map and put a bullet between their eyes. Lol far cry on the pc was sooooo much fun.

@ roca this has nothing to do with xbox I’m talking about PC gaming! and football manager is a 6 million selling games franchise so it does deserve a mention.
@ mike, I hold my hands up I must have missed them articles, not that I care for WOW at all it just seems everyone is starting to overlook PC gaming, which would be ok except I do enjoy a good RTS game and I just can’t bring myself to do it on a console.

@ncaissie
Funny how a Sony fan boy would call Planetside a Halo MMO. lmao
Have you ever seen Section 8? It came out like last year on PS3 and 360. I’d say that Section 8 kinda resembles Planetside.
July 10th, 2011
“football manager is a 6 million selling games franchise so it does deserve a mention.”
It doesn’t. A yearly sports franchise update is not really worhty of any article space.
It ain’t just PC games that are being ignored anyway. You don’t see any FIFA, Madden, NHL, NBA, etc.
Because they’re not worth the space.
July 10th, 2011
Yearly Sports game don’t deserve any articles. Period.
@ncaissie
The original PlanetSide was an online MMO FPS and it came out before the Halo had online play (in Halo 2).
Planetside looks and sound good but imo Dust looks much better

“Funny how a Sony fan boy would call Planetside a Halo MMO. lmao”
Lol yeah I was just playing.
July 10th, 2011
I expected a bigger response though. LOL
July 11th, 2011
@PSN_FAIL
You just failed then cause I will probably buy it.
July 11th, 2011
@PSN FAIL
I bet there are more ppl playing it right now than the number of ppl playing Halo 2.
I’m glad they canned The Agency for Planetside 2. The Agency didn’t really look that impressive.
July 11th, 2011
He fails because he is an xbitch.
July 11th, 2011
I’ll get it for PC depending on how they cater for diff. areas.
The original was a mightily laggy affair because of where I lived, oh and the frame rate chugged and it gobbled memory.
And I spent all that time unlocking my BFR
July 11th, 2011
how many players did the original Planetside supported?
and why does this PC game doesn’t look any better than MAG, which is a console game?
July 11th, 2011
@Roca
Over 300 per map (130 per faction, there were three factions).
It was pretty insane.
July 11th, 2011
So it probably doesn’t look fantastic because *hopefully* they’re looking at those kinds of player numbers again and they want those of us without a supercomputer to be able to play it

“I GUARENTEE NOBODY HERE WILL BUY THIS GAME.”
I GUARANTEE EVERONE HERE THAT PSN_FAIL WILL DIE A VIRGIN!
July 13th, 2011
I no I spelled everyone wrong, now PSN_Fail is going to own me! Oh noooooooo!
