PSN’s Journey – what the heck is it about?
The game Journey largely remains a mystery despite showings at various venues. Questions around gameplay, story, and goals have alluded gamers since the title’s announcement. However, according to some, Journey may be one of the most innovative games of this generation.
Journey is a PSN game being developed by Thatgamecompany, the developers that brought you Flow and Flower. Journey is a game that mixes adventure and puzzle elements into a giant social experiment.
Each player will find themselves wandering the desert in search of something. Gamers will come across ruins that may hold the key to the game. Once in a while players will run across a random live player in the desert, similarly to Demon’s Souls. Gamers can decide to adventure together or go their separate ways.
However, players will not be able to achieve their objective without the help of other players. Without the proper communication tools such as voice or text chat, gamers will have to come up with ways to communicate with other players.
Players will come across magical objects, such as a piece of cloth that will allow them to fly for a short time. Collaborating with other players, you will be able to reach far off destinations.
Creative director, Jenova Chen summarized the game by stating:
It’s about two strangers who meet online. They don’t know who they are or how old they are. All they know is, that is another human being. The only way players can communicate audibly with each other is with a wordless shout.
CVG calls Journey “the most unique game of this generation.”
In its preview, CVG wrote:
Individuals who could be at opposite ends of the globe, combining on a simple human level beyond the reach of culture, gender, age, race or religious differences, to unravel a truth. It’s beautiful. But, of course, there’s conflict.
There may be no shooting, but you’re always battling, whether it’s against the rolling desert or the precipices of a snow-blasted mountain. It’s no stroll. The haunting style and premise builds on past designs, but its idiosyncratic interaction elevates Journey. It’s this kind of creativity that will define the PSN and, if we’re lucky, PS3 itself.

Sounds different.
In a world where every other game is a FPS, different is good.

Journey is a pretty cool game… It’s all about exploration and cool gameplay mechanics. I’ve been playing the beta and it’s pretty unique, everytime I play the first level again I discover something new.

I want Batman but I don’t really care if I wait 6 months to get it. SP games are like that for me. You can wait for a reasonable price drop unless they are something really big. I got the first Batman game for free.

Journey to me looks like it will take that exploratory barren feeling Shadow of The Colossus gave you and expand it with Multiplayer.
I’m still unsure if the no mics thing is a good idea or not. On one hand playing games across different language barriers could be cool. On the other hand it seems like it could be a real pain in the ass when you want to play with a friend and you’re limited to “shouting”

Phranctoast,
I’ve always been more into single player games then multi-player games.

Roca,
No worries. The last time I was at BB I picked up a Xbox360 and I pre-ordered Uncharted 3 already along with a bunch of other games so I can get the $100 gift credit.
