Twisted Metal delayed to 2012 – good news on the wallet

August 5, 2011

Twisted Metal delayed to 2012 - good news on the wallet Fans of the Twisted Metal series may be initially disappointed to hear that the game will be delayed into 2012. However, as with everything there is a silver lining in the sky.

David Jaffe, the creative force behind Twisted Metal posted a rather lengthy letter to the fans discussing a few things. Jaffe revealed that Twisted Metal will not be shipping Oct. 4 as revealed earlier this year.

He stated:

Ugh! I know, I know. A lot of dedicated, supportive, passionate Twisted Metal fans have been waiting for the return of Calypso’s demented contest for a long time but the truth is: we’re just not ready yet.

Jaffe admitted that he knows that it “sucks” when games get delayed and he promises that the delay is going to make it better.

Anyway – it sucks bad when games miss their announced launch dates. We’re gamers too and we know how annoying it is. It’s disappointing and frustrating and it really takes the wind out of your sails if you’re a fan that has been looking forward to playing a title for a long time. Thing is, you gotta trust me when I tell you that – with this extra time for tuning and polish – the game is going to be so much better than it already is.

However, I believe this is a smart move on Jaffe’s part as the holiday season is looking pretty crowded this year with titles such as: Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, Batman: Arkham City, Dark Souls, Uncharted 3, Skyrim, Resistance 3 and Gears of War 3.

I predict that several of the games listed above will be getting delayed into 2012 as well. At this point its extremely risky to launch during the busy holiday season.

Check out Jaffe’s full post below:

Hey all! David Jaffe here with some good news and bad news on behalf of myself, my Eat Sleep Play partner and Twisted Metal co-director Scott Campbell, the entire Eat Sleep Playteam, and Sony Santa Monica.

First the good news: Eat Sleep Play and Sony Santa Monicaare cranking like mad to get a fantastic Twisted Metal build ready for both Gamescom and PAX Prime! For those not in the know: Gamescom is August 17th-21st in Cologne, Germany and PAX Prime (link) will take place here in America August 26th-28th in Seattle, Washington. Both shows are open to the public but PAX – I believe- is already sold out. If you’ve got PAX Prime tickets, I can’t wait to see you there! I hope you’ll swing by the Twisted Metal booth and give our game a try!

At Gamescom and PAX we’ll be showing off a brand new level called Thrills & Spills Amusement Park! It’s one of our favorite all time Twisted Metal levels and it’s filled with the over the top destruction, strategic level choices, and twisted humor that fans of the series have come to love and expect. Players at both shows will also get hands on with TEAM HUNTED, a brand new mode that we’ll be unveiling – for the first time ever – at Gamescom. We’ll also be premiering the new Dollface story trailer which delves into just what makes that nutty-but-sexy pink-haired freak tick.

And at both shows we’ll be handing out some super cool, super creepy Sweet Tooth masks! Halloween will be here before you know it and we want Twisted Fans to be able to represent their favorite slasher in style!

Ok, so now…the bad news. Or at least the ‘news that seems bad at first but after you read the rest of my post I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s actually fantastic news’ news. So here it is:

We’re not shipping Twisted Metal October 4th, 2011. We’re going to miss our date. We’re going to be late.

Ugh! I know, I know. A lot of dedicated, supportive, passionate Twisted Metal fans have been waiting for the return of Calypso’s demented contest for a long time but the truth is: we’re just not ready yet.

Sony has been – and remains – a super supportive champion and collaborator on this title and all of us at Eat Sleep Play are so grateful that their patience and generosity will allow us the extra time needed to polish our demented baby until it shines. NOTE: I don’t actually think that qualifies as a mixed metaphor… just a bad one. But the ‘demented baby’ part was really cool to me, and it felt very Twisted Metal-y, so I’m keeping it in this post.

And if you played Twisted Metal and liked it at E3 or Comic-Con, or if you get to play it (and you enjoy it) at one of the August shows, just imagine how much more fun the final game will be with some extra time, polish, and love.

There’s a great, classic industry saying by legendary Nintendo designer – and personal hero – Shigeru Miyamoto that goes a little something like this:

‘A late game is only late until it ships. A bad game is bad until the end of time.’

Now, if we shipped Twisted Metal tomorrow – going off the response from folks who have played it – I assure you, it would never be a bad game. Not even close. But we’re aiming for a heck of a lot more than that! With Twisted Metal we plan to ship a multiplayer classic. We plan to ship the best Twisted Metal ever made. We plan to convert a lot of folks who think vehicle combat is a relic best left to 90?s nostalgia. And we plan to explode the belief that the only relevant kind of shooter is a first person one (or a 3rd person one, where you play a human… with a tee shirt not all the way tucked in :) …).

Most importantly, we plan on treating you – the kind folks who play our game (and pay our bills) – like the VIPs that you are. You only deserve our best and we appreciate your understanding as we take a little more time to guarantee that our best is what we deliver.

Twisted Metal for PS3 will ship early 2012. Stay tuned for more details.

Thank god, between bf3 on both pc and ps3, infamous 2, resistance 3 and a bunch of other games i still gotta pick up…its one less title i have to worry about this year ;)

  2. oldschool1987:

I really hope an Xbot like CAD tries laughing at this, it would be funny as fuck.

    @MIKE

Is Gears of War 3 coming out for PS3? :)

Sorry to be cynical but surely it would be better on the wallet if it did actually come out during the holiday season so if you didn’t buy it at launch you could pick it up for cheaper down the line…

  5. oldschool1987:

Is Gears of War 3 the only game coming out on 360?

    Just correcting it for you.

  6. Roca.:

“Sorry to be cynical but surely it would be better on the wallet if it did actually come out during the holiday season so if you didn’t buy it at launch you could pick it up for cheaper down the line…”

but you’ve had nothing to play all year long (exclusive wise) so your wallet is going to be just fine with Gears 3…why wait until it’s cheap.

I will wait on Gears 3 as there is too many PS3 games coming out

  7. CarlB:

    “exclusive wise”

Mike just named 6 high profile non-exclusives for a three month period. Exclusives are nice and all, but they are becoming less important as more quality multiplats are flooding the market. That said, I still enjoy my PS3 exclusives, but I’m not going to lord them over a 360 owner just because there are more of them.

360 and PS3 owners, from what I can tell, have had about 20 quality multiplats released this year that I would be interested in playing. Considering this is August, that averages over 2 retail games per month. 360 owners also have some high quality games via XBLA, with Torchlight, Bastion, Trenched, etc, so I don’t think they are hurting for games that much and we can stop with the exclusive superiority complex nonsense.

And CON, do you forget? Gears of War 3 has already been delayed. Considering it is a 360 title, it would have been REALLY cheap this holiday season if it had released on schedule.

Hey roca, I see you like Plants vs. Zombies… that was my favorite game on iPhone early last year, it worked great with the touch control, and I think I got it for 99 cents… what is it going for on PSN now?

  9. ncaissie:

“Mike just named 6 high profile non-exclusives for a three month period. Exclusives are nice and all, but they are becoming less important as more quality multiplats are flooding the market. ”
    Typical xbot BullShit!

Microsuck has nothing going for it so you cry multi plats. You play and praise that crap because that is all there is for Ms and you are a true blue xbot. LOL why can’t you just admit it?

  10. CarlB:

Typical fanboy. He doesn’t even realize I haven’t touched my 360 in months and only play PS3 now.

  11. CarlB:

Dude. Do you even have one plat?

  12. oldschool1987:

    @ Carl:

I have one or two lol.

  13. CarlB:

you also have a year’s head start lol.

  14. ncaissie:

“Typical fanboy. He doesn’t even realize I haven’t touched my 360 in months and only play PS3 now.”
Because there is nothing to play on that POS. Dude, do I really care about trophies? Not! Change the subject because you know you are wrong. That is the xbitch strategy. LOL
Anyway, I’m on the east coast so I don’t have any ps3 games to play. I did bring my PSP and GOW chains and ghost.
When I get back I’ll post pics of the General Lee and rasco pico train(not sure on that spelling LOL) cop car I seen on the way through Quebec. Man I loved that show growing up. Haha
Daisy duke was fine. Just love those double D’s.

  15. ncaissie:

I play my games and put them on the shelf just in case I want to play them again some day. I don’t replay them for trophies. I just don’t have that kind of time. Maybe when next Gen comes I may sell them. We will have to wait and see. Call of duty black ops is the only game I have sold this Gen. I wish I could have brought one of my ps3s on my holidays. :(

  16. CarlB:

    “Change the subject”

That’s a lot of explaining for changing the subject.
    But seriously. Dude.
I can’t help it if you suck at video games and have to make excuses for not getting even the simplest of plats.
    LOLLOLOL

  17. CarlB:

    hooh. That was funny.
Joking aside, I know what you mean about some plats taking too long and it being time to move on to a new game… Vanquish, Bayonetta, and just recently Tomb Raider Anniversary were those games for me.

  18. phranctoast:

Vanquish and bayonetta are too difficult TR just takes a lot of time with the time trial/treasures/relics.

  19. CarlB:

Vanquish and Bayonetta are more difficult, but practice and mastery is probably still key to the plat, which can take a lot of time. The time trials wouldn’t take so much time if they were easy to execute the first time through, and some are much more difficult than others. Like Vanquish and Bayonetta, I would say it would take a lot of time and practice to plat, though perhaps not as much, though I cannot say because I haven’t platted any one of them.

  20. Roca.:

“Hey roca, I see you like Plants vs. Zombies… that was my favorite game on iPhone early last year, it worked great with the touch control, and I think I got it for 99 cents… what is it going for on PSN now?”

    @CarlB
I have for my Android phone, it cost nothing I got it for free. I still enjoy the console version (cost me $5 with PSN+ discount) more with more modes, multiplayer (co-op & vs), trophies and many other extra features..

  21. Roca.:

I don’t think exclusive are losing it’s value especially when that is what’s differentiating the PS3 and the Wii U from the 360.

MP can be played on all the console so you are likely to not miss out on them.

  22. Roca.:

    @CarlB
““Mike just named 6 high profile non-exclusives for a three month period”

Let’s take at look at the list one more time:

    -Battlefield 3 (EA)
    -Modern Warfare 3 (Activision)
    -Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (Ubisoft)
    -Batman: Arkham City (WB)
    -Dark Souls (Namco)
    -Skyrim (Bethesda)

Now let’s look at the exclusive:
    -Uncharted 3 (Sony)
    -Resistance 3 (Sony)
-Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (Sony)
    -God of War: Origins (Sony)
    -ICO Collection (Sony)

Sony alone will produced 5 exclusives in a 3 months period while the other 6 MP games are all coming out from different publishers. It’s nice to see your console maker supporting your console like that and not relying solely on multiplatform games.

  23. ncaissie:

Hey idiot, you don’t have have to be a master at video games to enjoy them.

  24. ncaissie:

I wasn’t explaining your subject change twat. I was explaining your xbot bs.

  25. Barnabe Jones:

    Speaking of Vanquish…

I rented it last week. Played through up until the final boss of the first level.

I really enjoyed the first level, but the first boss battle pissed me off to no end. It was a really long fight, and I kept getting one hit killed near the end of it.

After about 5 or 6 tries, I turned down the difficultly. The battle moved a long pretty quickly, but I kept getting one hit killed at the same spot. Moved the game down to the lowest difficulty and the same thing happened.

After about an hour and a half, I said to my self, “this is the first boss? Do I really want to invest the time doing this, and have the game just get harder?”. It was frustrating and tedious – not fun at all.

I sent it back to Gamefly the next day.

I actually liked Bayonetta a lot. A wanted to trow my controller a few times, but overall it was fun. The one hit kill thing, and hour long boss battle in Vanquish was a game killer for me.

  26. CarlB:

Aww, don’t get your panties in a wad NC.
    You are so sensitive sometimes.

    GameFly rocks.

  27. CarlB:

“Sony alone will produced 5 exclusives in a 3 months period”

r3 and u3 should be quality. Not too sure about All 4 One, and the other two are old games in HD. Not that I’m complaining, as I just got through playing TRT.

  28. phranctoast:

All 4 One looks pretty damn awesome from the last previews I just checked out. I’m glad to know that it will feature a SP game and not just MP co op. As for the other remakes in HD… My wallet doesn’t really know the difference. :)

  29. phranctoast:

    @CON
“Sorry to be cynical but surely it would be better on the wallet if it did actually come out during the holiday season so if you didn’t buy it at launch you could pick it up for cheaper down the line…”

It’s not a bad point if the game wasn’t heavily dependent on a multiplayer community, which it will be.

I take that point of view with SP games. Batman, AC, Dark Souls, and Skyrim would be better picks for me to get moved out of the holiday lineup.

Considering the MP juggernauts that are MW3, BF3,and to a lesser degree Uncharted 3, it’s definitely best that a game with it’s last iteration coming out 10 year ago sees a delay in release. This will capitalize on the most possible potential players.

Hopefully they keep it away from Starhawks release date by a couple of months too. I see both games having a similar audience for a couple of reasons.

    Both games:
    -Run on same game engine.
    -Are from X-ingognito employees
-Are arcade MP games (that means you pick up weapons and upgrades rather than being outfitted in the beginning like COD)
    -Battlefield like gameplay (node collection/area

The biggest difference I can see between the two games is appears that Twisted Metal will be a class based mp shooter where Starhawk isn’t, and of course the new RTS building options in Starhawk.

  30. Roca.:

“it’s definitely best that a game with it’s last iteration coming out 10 year ago sees a delay in release. This will capitalize on the most possible potential players”

Especially when Sony has not been marketing all that much…Sony has way too many game from Sept to November, in fact, they have 3 games coming out in Septemper alone.

All R&C has been quality games with great and impressive reviews but somehow they always seem to always fly under the radar.

  31. phranctoast:

who else has the R3 beta? We should set up a match since Match making is turned off and private matches are the onyl thing that works.

  32. Roca.:

I’m down, but even private matches are buggy as hell. The beta needs a patch ASAP

  33. phranctoast:

After downloading it I had to download an equally large patch.lol

  34. twilight:

    Ncaissie,
Here’s something to make you laugh. Another dead Xbox360 in less then a week. The free one that I got the hdmi output quit working so I traded it in and got the other one and this system scratched up and ruined my $60 game.

  35. phranctoast:

That sucks. You would think you would learn by now ;)

  36. Roca.:

    Twightly,
why you keep wasting your money on 360s?

because of ppl like you is why MS keep making shitty system because they know you ppl will buy’em again anyways.

  37. twilight:

    Phranctoast and Roca,
That is the million dollar question. All of the games that are important to me are on Ps3 including my multi-platform games. I would never make the Xbox360 my primary gaming system. I guess it is because I just can’t stand not being able to play any game I want to play. I do want to play Gears Of War 3 but I’m about ready to throw the towel in. I have to return the 250 gig system to BB today. I can exchange the system for the same, get the cheap slim system for Gears or buy more Ps3 games. BB is having a buy one get the second game half off on all Xbox360/Ps3 games.

  38. oldschool1987:

    @ twilight:

You’re gonna give Microsoft another unit to add to their ‘sales’ lol

  39. Roca.:

Twilight is responsible for 15% of the total install base

  40. oldschool1987:

I think I’m responsible for at least 10% of it. Had 3 consoles myself.

  41. oldschool1987:

Anyone know any decent sites to jailbreak the iPhone 4 please?

  42. oldschool1987:

Actually I don’t think it’s possible since the iOS 4.3.5

The only way for it to be possible, I think, is with a tethered jailbreak. Which means, every time I turn my iPhone off I have to connect it to the computer to get it running.

  43. twilight:

    Lol @ Roca and Oldschool.

  44. ncaissie:

“Actually I don’t think it’s possible since the iOS 4.3.5
The only way for it to be possible, I think, is with a tethered jailbreak. Which means, every time I turn my iPhone off I have to connect it to the computer to get it running.”
That would suck. Having a JB iPad it seems to randomly reboot some times. So if you’re not home that would be a prob.
I would wait if I was you.
Also I’m not really sure it is worth the trouble.
I rooted my xperia play because the internal memory sucks and you need to root in order to force stuff to the SD card.
On the iPad there are a lot of cool (but unstable) things to do after you JB.

  45. Godless:

What the hell do you do to your consoles Twilight.
I have one mate who is on his third 360s, having had it twice repaired under warranty. None of my other buddies have ever had any problems. The same guy has had his PS3 repaired twice, one drive fail, then an HD fail, both times he had to pay well over £100 to have it fixed

He has his 360 & PS3 sitting on a shelf up behind his TV the heat from the TV is what we think is killing them.

I think because these machines have the console label people treat them with less respect than they would a full blown PC. .would anyone stick a PC in there video cabinet then shut the doors and expect it to last more than a few minutes before over heating. .?

And moving them while they’re on. . .WTF is that about. . what moron would move a pc wile it was reading a disk. .why would a console be any different.

I have never had a console (any console) break on me, I still have my Atari 2600, vic20, C64, Amiga A500, Mega CD, CD32, PS1 & Saturn all working albeit with dodgy connectors and the like, but working all the same.

  46. Roca.:

Twilight is just another victim of MS’ poorly built hardware. Don’t blame her, I’m there are millions out there who’ve had their 360 died on them.

MS called it the XBox for a reason.. The “X” stands for the high number of hardware failure you can get with that “Box” ;)

  47. twilight:

    Godless,
The Xbox360 is a piece of junk as far as hardware goes. I had the system last then a week. I keep my Xbox360 laying flat on an open shelf. The system was not moved. It scratched my disc. There was a a grinding noise and I stopped the disc and removed the disc and it was scratched so badly it was ruined. When I returned the 250 gig Xbox360 system, the guy at BB was laughing so hard. He recommended that I just get the cheap arcade system. The only reason that I am going through this headache is because I like having access to games I want to play. I want to play Gears Of War 3.

  48. Roca.:

“I keep my Xbox360 laying flat on an open shelf. The system was not moved. It scratched my disc”

This is a common issues with 360s. If you buy used 360 games on Gamestop you will notice most of them have all sorts of scratches from the 360 tray.

  49. Godless:

I have had one disk lightly scratched, this was caused by the washing machine in the next room (shity floorboards) whole unit was wobbling about.

there is no reason an xbox would scratch a disk without some causality, something must have triggered the disk to move.

spinning at 500rpm even a small jolt to a console that isn’t on a level surface is enough to cause the disk to realign horizontaly and cause disk scuffing.

It’s not a design flaw that the 360 drives cause disk scratching it’s a design flaw that it is easy to make them scratch disks, just as with any PC DVD drive.

  50. twilight:

    Godless,
You’re in Xbox360 failure denial mode. I take excellent care of the stuff that I own. The system was not moved. It’s like Roca said the Xbox360 just scratched the disc. The Xbox360 that I had won at work last holiday the hdmi outlet quit working so I traded it in to get some money back towards the new system. The system didn’t even last a freakin’ year. My Xbot loving friend is blaming the game disc. He thinks it was a defective disc. All I know is that I was not going to keep a system that destroyed my game disc like this. I have another friend who has an original Ps3 covered in dust in a closed cabinet that still
works. We all tease him about it. Ps3 is a quality system which is more then can be said about the Xbox360. I am surrounded by Xbot loving freaks at work. Most of them have all replaced their Xbox360 at least one time. There is one guy that has had his system replaced four times.

  51. Roca.:

“You’re in Xbox360 failure denial mode”

as usual, they support and defend MS’ poorly build hardware and its failures.

Everyone knows that the 360 (including the Slim) is the only console this generation that will scratch your game discs. Sometimes it’s your fault, other time it’s the system fault. It’s inevitable.

“I have another friend who has an original Ps3 covered in dust in a closed cabinet that still
    works”

LMAO – “covered in dust” that made me laugh
