Remastering God of War: Origins Collection for PS3 was grueling
Ready At Dawn Studios recently put up a lengthy post detailing the process the studio had to endure to get the classic God of War PSP titles onto the PS3 in all of its HD glory.
Nathan Phail-Liff, art director over at Ready At Dawn Studios revealed the grueling process over on the official PlayStation Blog. According to Phail-Liff the studio had to build a whole new engine for the PS3 platform to get God of War: Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta running at 60FPS in 1080P while maintaining its beauty.
The games look beautiful on the PSP and some have even stated that the graphics go toe-to-toe with next gen games. The studio had to triple the polygon count by hand as well as up-rez and re-paint every textures for the characters and environments.
This was no easy task as its not a matter of just up-rezing the game. In addition to achieving 1080p resolution at 60FPS, the studio also implemented full stereoscopic 3D support without sacrificing performance.
Stunning PSP Version:
The studio wasn’t satisfied with just up-rezing the cinematic also as it look terrible in HD when coming off the hand-painted textures from the gameplay. The decision was made to recreate the cinematic in full 1080p by re-rendering it frame-by-frame.
PSP VS. PS3 version:
God of War: Origins Collection (contains two games – God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghost of Sparta) will release on a single Blu-ray disc on Sept. 13, 2011 with Trophy support.

Another rant at Mikes overly enthusiastic journalism
In one breath saying

to then saying

I hate when these comparisons are made.
A hand held console is nowhere, and I do mean nowhere near the capability of the full blown current gen games console (I’m assuming that’s what’s being inferred?.
would it not be better to keep things in the real world and compare it to a machine with the same resolution, and graphics capabilities.
Now I admit I don’t know anything about the PSP but I’d be willing to guess it doesn’t do 1080p, and probably not 720, maybe not even 480p?. I’d also go out on a limb and guess that its poly handling stats are a fraction of the current gen systems. Probably lower than a PS2, maybe something in between an N64 and a Wii?? I have no Idea and can’t be arsed to check.
What I do know is that it is not “up-there with next gen systems” otherwise you’d be able to plug it into an HD TV and it would look as good as the big boys do, and it clearly doesn’t.
the day will come when we do have a portable 360, and PS3 but for now we are a “LONG WAY OFF”. so stop saying the Sony hand hels are on par with the current HD consoles, that includes the Vita.

I believe the GOW collection which is up-rezed can go two to two with this gen games. The PSP games look almost as good as the PS2 games.
The Origins collection will look pretty good at 1080p. Even the original collection was only 720p but with the MSAA made it comparable, if not better in some ways than stuff out now.

There is a big difference between native resolution on the PSP and standard resolution on a TV which would go a long way in explaining why simply up-rezzing it wouldn’t work so well.
At any rate I will buy this eventually.

I downloaded the japanese demo of Final Fantasy Type-0 and that game can definitely go toe to toe with most 360 games.
Playing that game made me realized how shitty the 3DS hardware is as the graphics are not as good as the original PSP. I even had a Gamestop coupon to get a 3DS for just $100 (trading in my DS Lite) but I will pass on it as it’s games are too expensinve and they don’t offer much.

The game looks as good as console game on the PSP small screen, when you stretch the image for the big screen it is kind of obvious that it will look “horrible”. I though you were a game developer, you should know this stuff.

When I played GT1 it was incredible. I remember that fondly… I didn’t play anything else that whole summer.
Then when GT2 was released it just lost something… I dunno what it was. Even adding rally racing it just didn’t do anything for me.
Then GT 3 and 4 for PS2 just didn’t do it for me. Actually I felt the same way as you, I was always playing RPGs because the PS2 was totally filled with RPGs lol. I miss those days too. This gen doesn’t have the RPGs like last gen did.
At any rate i will be leaving here ina few minutes. If I get GT5 I expect to get a race in with someone here sometime lol

GOW: Origins will be day 1 for me as well.
imo, GOW: Chains of Olympus was is the 2nd or 3rd best game in the series (it’s NG+ mode rocks) and I have yet to play Ghost of Sparta.

My Order
1st-GOW2: Overall the best ‘game’ out of all of them. Hits on many different environments while introducing one of the best devices that’s barely used in GOW3 known as the golden fleece.
2nd-GOW: While having some of the most infuriating moments in the series, namely Hades pillar and the rotating blades in the temple of Hades, it still sets the template as how these games should be made.
3rd-GOW3: The only reason this isn’t higher on the list is due to the linear structure of the levels. Where GOW1 and 2 both had a central area to bring your objects fetched (like Tomb raider anniversary) this one didn’t. It also gets points deducted for no new game plus, which was a killer for me because I really wanted to use some of those other weapons for more than a couple of minutes.
4th-Chains: Great game but felt just too short in comparison. Sets up the story for GOW2 very well, and also sets up Hades anger against Kratos for killing Persephone. Some great boss fights on par with GOW2.

They also had one of my favorite movies on sale on Bluray for $10, Fight Club, so I picked that up as well.
Also I found a copy of Fallot New Vegas (For 360) just sitting there on the shelf and I got a price check on it and it was only $20 so I bought that too.

I have played all the GOW games and currently playing chains again. I’m going to play ghost next. I love those games but I get pissed off when I’m in a boss fight and turn the PSP off due to the stupid local of the power button.
Ghost looks better than any PSP or PS2 game and when viewing it on the small screen it looks close to ps3 quality. I know the res is not ps3 size but it still looks great.

I own a PSP, and it is capable of some sweet graphics. Certainly way better than anything Nintendos handhelds have delivered thus far.

The difference is the screen size. Naturally if you took something that res and put it up on a full sized TV screen it won’t look right, which is obviously why the God of war PSP games have to be redone.
Of course with the size of its screen the res fits perfectly. I’ve seen what the GoW games look like on PSP and they are amazing.

Specs don’t tell the whole story. Crisis Core, both God of War games, Final Fantasy Type-0 (wtf came out with this name??), Wipoout, Parasite Eve and GT all look great on PSP and most of these can rival console games (maybe not the best looking console games but a good chunk of them)

FF7 Crisis Core looked amazing, as do the GoW PSP games.
The PSP has been consistant in having games that are on par with, or better than PS2 graphics.
Were did you get the Type-O demo Roca? I have my eye on Type-O and it will be a must buy for me when it finally comes out. What I have seen so far it looks amazing.

I just did my first race with my piece of shit car (Adam Sandler would be proud)
Trying to get used to GT again and I ended up messing up the first 2 laps, was in 8th/last in the last lap and managed to come from behind to land 3rd place. Not bad.
One thing I certainly loved about GT1 was the Route 5 and Special State 11 tracks.

I’m actually having a pretty decent go with that Altezza. IMHO much better car than I thought it would be lol. Either that or my skills have not declined over the years. Bought the car, didn’t add anything to it, then went through the Sunday cup in 6 races. Finished 2 or 3rd in my first try on each race, then placed 1rst on the second race.

Anyone else extremely excited for the new Ridley Scott movie, Prometheus? I’m actually getting as hyped up as I did with Avatar when I first heard about it(which was a year after Titanic, but still lol).
Damon Lindelof writing(LOST writer) with Ridley Scott directing, can’t wait! What makes me more excited is that RS always said he would never, ever do a sequal unless the script was perfect and amazing.

the Vita has a fraction of the capability of the 360, a fraction of the resolution, a fraction of the poly handling , file rates etc, etc, etc. it is nothing like as powerful as a full console.

You keep saying Vita is a fraction of the 360…Technically true but again..you’re comparing a console to a handheld. So it’s not fair to compare them directly.
360 spces are outdated while the PSV specs are at least a year ahead of its time…Also in the “handheld” space the Vita can produce PS3-like graphics.

The top graphical Xbox360 games have nothing on the top graphical Ps3 games. Ps3 wins the graphics category hands down. Ps3 is not as easy to develop for as Xbox360 but when developed for properly the Ps3 puts Xbox360′s graphics to shame. The Vita will have the best graphics of any handheld console. As far as Vita having better graphics then Xbox360, it actually wouldn’t surpriise me if it did.

To be honest – no one is going to miss the wifi on the PSP. PSP uses Wifi B and it’s slow as shit. It will take hours to download a simple 500MB game on it.
I believe Sony is releasing this new PSP for the pirate community (as well as for the cheap parents and poor countries) who only wants to buy the hardware and nothing else. wonder why Sony is still producing the PS2 and it’s still selling well?

Even the PS3 can see and connect to the router fine, it just doesn’t stay connected.

I just switch to a new router (my year old wifi N router keep disconnecting my devices from it) and some of my wifi devices can’t connect to the new router including my phone, PSP, one of the laptops. It also has shitty range & speed campared to my old one even thought it’s wifi N.

If it connects ok but works intermittently I would suggest trying a different network cable, or a different port on the router.

So this has been a problem since you got the new xbox
If it’s second hand it may be worth checking the network socket of the xbox too, it could be that it’s damaged.
With the network cable plugged in to the xbox give the socket a little wiggle see if the socket moves excessive. If it does then it could be that in the passed too much force has been put on the socket and there is a possibility that the port is damaged (usually caused by people tripping over the network cable while it’s plugged in.
do this where you can see the router. That way, if there’s a ropey connection you will see the router lights flashing erratically as connection is broken & re-established (same is if you plug and unplug the cable)
My first thing would be to try a different socket on the router, then to swap out the cable for a new one.
If it’s new. then take it back to the shop under waranty.

The problem is that the PS3 is not able to transmit through interference that most other devices have few problems with.
one of the Electrical engineers I work with said it had something to to with wave amplitude output of the PS3 being pretty weak, It handshakes ok but as soon as the traffic gets heavy it falls on its arse.
He even gave me a shot of a managed hub to test it out, as it records dropped packets and shows signal quality from each devise connected.
I still have it at home but have never bothered to set it up, mainly because I have the problem solved by hard wiring and don’t have the time nor energy to go pissing around too much with my network again.
So it’s not so much the bricks in my house that are the problem, (though in Aberdeen they really can be, for lots of witless devises), It’s more that the PS3 just doesn’t transmit very well.

It did NOT take years for pc to “catch up” to the 360 specs..in fact, by the time the ps3 and 360 were released, their gpus were about 2 generations behind the pc….
Unified shader tech on pc predated the 360 by at least 2 years…..which was/is the ONLY “new” tech the 360 had going for it…multi core processors/gaming were already in full effect….
The “new” tech the ps3 brought was the architecture of the cell, and blu ray…the ps3 s gpu really is its weakest point, as its either a half gen or whole gen behind even the 360s ati gpu…..but that is offset by the cell archi, blu ray and its fast ram…
Godless, dont ever repeat that a console is a ahead of comp in pure tech specs because that is pretty much impossible….intel/amd do a cpu refresh every other year and in between refreshes they drop enhanced cpu lines ups..which pretty much means every year there are either new processor lines or new processor refresh….

That’s another fanboy BS from you. Just take a look at what Sony produce during the first 3 years (by Nov. 2009):
-Warhakw: one of the best MP games at the time.
-Uncharted 1: broke new grounds in story telling, graphics, gameplay and cinematics
-Uncharted 2: higest rated exclusive and most awarded game of all time. Also GOTY
-Killzone 2: Solid shooter and the best looking FPS on console at the time.
-MGS4: Best looking action game along with Uncharted and the most Epic console game with some of the best story telling at the time. Till this day, very few games come close to match it (no 360 exclusive for sure)
-LittleBigPlanet: genre defining, GOTY contender, winner of many awards for breaking new grounds and giving gamers unlimited replayabily. Still one of the best game for this generation
-Demon’s Souls: Offer one of the best RPG and most unique RPG experience..Firs RPG to seamlessly mix multiplayer and simple play into one.
-Infamous: One of the best new IPs of this generation and many can say it offers the best action oriented experience in a open world game.
-R&C 1&2: One of the best playstation franchise of all time. Shock the gaming world for bluring the line gaming and animated movies – offered a pixar-style of movie experience.
-Motorostorm 1&2: Broke new ground in the off-road racing game by introuding multiple vehicles classes, some of the best graphics on console and multi-path racing.
I don’t think you can come up with a lineup (for the whole 360 lifespan) as impressive the ones PS3 offer during its first 3 years.

yes the tech existed but only a small fraction of geeks would be putting together a system that was able to better the xbox within the first couple of years.
The graphics card in the xbox was not available for PCs on launch, and the CPU was state of the art.
jojo, I was trying to spec up a PC for myself at the time, and ended up getting an xbox after seeing Fable II & grid on it running smoothly at a fraction of ther cost of a PC to do the same

out of all the games you listed only motorstorm & UC2 interested me. the multiplats at the time were almost 100% of the time better on the 360.

It seems to be doing fine and should only do better for the rest of the stated 10 year lifecycle. It isn’t even halfway through that lifecycle… and well, yes, the PS2 is still selling, so I don’t see your argument for how their R&D was a “complete waste of money”. Not only that, but the cell was part of what made the PS3 more reliable than 360 those first three years you spoke of, and yes, the graphics are better on it when developers spend the time.

Ps3 did have a shit start…once 08 has hit, Sony has been on a roll perios…what you are interested in is relevant and subjective…its just like me saying only halo/forza are shit…bkttomline is sony has more exclusives aka more choice in gaming that SET THE DAMN STANDARD FOR THEIR RESPECTIVE GENRES IN EITHER GRAPHICS, INNOVATION OR GAMEPLAY….if you dont like them, at least sony has 4-5 times more variety of games in just as many genres.than the 360…this cannot be argued at all and doing so shows your ms fanboy colors…

Sony spent hundreds of billions in total on the Cell, they will never get that back.
the losses made on the PS3 will never be recovered in it’s life cycle, and I think you are being optimistic with the half way thing.
I say we have 2 years before the next xbox, that will pretty much end the PS3 selling in any great numbers.
Sony has lost a lot of money in the last 5 years.

There were a few titles that took a significant hit on PS3 those first years, but it was more like 5% of the time, if that. And frankly, I would rather have had a console that lasted longer than one which broke down but played a few multiplats better before crapping out. To be honest, the only reasons I really liked 360 were because it was the only HD console on the market for a year and achievements. Both of those reasons have been superceded for some time now.

You know, CarlB is a good example of how much better the PS3 is compare to the 360 – He left 5 years of worth of achievements behind as well as many years worth invesments on XBL Gold, Arcade games and 360 disc games (years worth of supporting the 360 in this site
). I know CarlB was big on achievements (I believe he had or still the higher Gamerscore out of alll Blorge members) so to see him willing to leave all that behind just show how worthless the 360 has become.
The 360 is now another option to play multiplatform games and motion shovelware.

PS2 has been on store shelves since 2000 and is still selling millions. Where is the XBox?
And you thought I was being optimistic about another 5 years for PS3? Come on man. I’m not saying the next gen won’t happen next year or soon after, I’m simply saying the PS3 will continue to sell well for another 5, even after PS4 releases. Things like a capable blu-ray player, free online multiplayer, and other online services just make PS3 that much more viable to sell for that period of time.

It’s not that the 360 is “worthless”, it’s just that Sony has done so much with PS3 to make it the best option. In addition to the BR and free online play, they matched achievements and even improved slightly on the formula with trophies. They have more highly rated exclusives in more genres overall. Plus came with games included and M$ just took a massive crap on 360 players with a price hike at the same time with no games included. In actuality, I’m thankful the 360 has been so successful this gen, because I highly doubt PS3 would be as great as it is now without that competition.
I still think a 360 is better than a Wii, but PS3 is by far the best gaming console for me.
