2K Marin explains design change to XCOM: 20-minute gameplay video
When 2K Marin announced a reboot for XCOM over a year ago, fans of the original series complained about the direction the studio was taking the game. 2K Marin’s take on XCOM was a run-and-gun shooter that deviated far from the original tactical strategy game.
According to CVG, the studio is listening to the fans of the original series as 2K Marin has been busy making major changes to the game in order to implement a lot of what made the original series so great into the reboot.
Narrative director, Jordan Thomas stated:
Candidly, it just wasn’t ‘XCOM’ enough for the hardcore fans of the original games at 2K Marin, who serve as our creative conscience. So over the past year, we’ve made some pretty aggressive design changes, in pursuit of the feelings that we experienced when we played the original games.
The studio has implemented a lot of the features from the original series such as squad management and weapons research into the game.
Check out the 20-minute walkthrough of the demo shown behind closed doors at E3:
XCOM is set to release March 6, 2012 on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Some very good news regarding Skyrim on 360; it’s all on a single disc. But it also makes me worry that the game has been butchered like FFXIII was for the 360. Please let this game be on level with Oblivion and less glitches than Fallout.

I still think this looks really good. I loved the first 3 games, and even the CD32 had a good version of the third outing UFO Enemy Unknown.
Looking forward to this.

@Mike Ferro:
why, why, why did you have to report this crappy game?
It doesn’t even play like X-COM Alliance, in fact it plays exactly like a poor-man’s Mass Effect.
If you want a real X-COM game, then go Pre-order Xenonauts:
http://www.xenonauts.com/
Because, from all the info I can get from this 2k’s “xcom”, it will have:
-No Base Building.
-No Base Control.
-No Tanks to send into battle.
-No Research (they have something called “Research points”, which is just another way of saying “experience points”).
-No Manufacturing.
-No Random Missions (game follows a linear storyline with side-missions that you can go on).
-No UFO to shoot down.
-No more then two men/NPCs to command, but they can never die.
-No Nations/City to protect.
-No Micromanaging of any kind.
-No real Strategy of any kind.
-Nothing, and I mean *NOTHING* from the first 3 games to connect it to X-COM.
-NO homage beyond ONE or TWO names.

Or try UFO 2: Extraterrestrials:

Or even try Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars on the 3DS (from the maker of the real X-COM games)

Or try the upcoming, turn-based tactical, Fray:

Kind of looks dated graphically.

“Kind of looks dated graphically”
you could tell the 360 is the lead development platform
August 30th, 2011
@zoar some people don’t like all the management in some games. So the fact that they made drastic changes last minute is why it is news, Not because it is a game.
August 30th, 2011
“you could tell the 360 is the lead development platform”
Yeah.
Maybe it will be cleaned up via the power of the cell now that it’s also coming out on the PS3.
August 30th, 2011
Skyrim may or may not be better on Ps3. Since this game is a multi-platform title, there is no telling how this game will fair on the Ps3. So far, the Xbox360 version of this game has been mostly shown.
August 30th, 2011
“Skyrim may or may not be better on Ps3″
Oblivion was better on PS3. But even if it’s not better I don’t think there will be any major difference. In fact only like 1% (maybe less) of all the MP games have had major difference between platform
August 30th, 2011
1% is that it, wow thought it would be more if you could just point me to your source I would like to see this
August 30th, 2011
1% is actually pretty high.
There’s only two games that have “Major” difference.
The Orange Box and
Bayonetta,
and the latter had a patch that fixed up enough problems to remove it from the “Major” category.
Most games have the difference so minute that you require a pixel counting site like digital foundry or the Lens of Truth to even tell the difference.

I somehow missed this video. It’s a 50 minute comicon panel with Jaffe, talking about the new twisted metal.
It shows the new rooftops and some interesting New York level video.
It’s a good look if you have some time.

I’m checking the video out right now
@navysteve
Phranc already listed the games with major difference (backed up by reviews)..
August 31st, 2011
I know he listed some, but I feel when throwing % about as fact I just feel you need to provide a source . I know how you love links and hate people just saying opinions are fact
August 31st, 2011
godless can provide a source that shows the games with differences.
My point is, that only 2 that I can recall are “Major.”
Major to the point where it affects the review score of said game.
August 31st, 2011
It’s not my opinion. it’s backed up by reviews where the PS3 version of both of those game got lower score due to it being a inferior port. No other multiplatform game have had any significant difference that required one version to score much lower than the other like those two games did.
if there are more games I’m all ears.

@Phranc
Awesome video! Loved the intro trailer as well as the new levels & mechanics. Thanks to you I went to bed at around 12:30am
August 31st, 2011
@Steve
You say it is more the 1. What is your source? Feel free to list the games.
August 31st, 2011
“Thanks to you I went to bed at around 12:30am”
Sorry..lol
August 31st, 2011
What was Jaffe’s last trivia question about? There is a Twisted Metal movie coming out?
August 31st, 2011
I’ll have to go back later and see what you’re talking about.
August 31st, 2011
LMAO you didn’t even watch the entire video.. it happens at the end (last 2 or 3 mins)

I only have 2 games Iv’e seen & played a lot on both systems where there was a noticeable difference
Split Second: better on 360, clearer graphics & smoother gameplay I liked the look and feel of the demo on PS3 so despite already having it on 360, so I bought it. . turns out that over all it is just not as good, lots of little things no major clangers
Crysis 2 full game: Better on 360 despite what some sites say, PS3 version suffers badly from motion blur where the 360 is not as bad, though still worse than most other FPS games. .Crisis 2 is way overrated for graphics on both systems
I’ve played loads of others. mostly demos, and there is nothing to separate them.
August 31st, 2011
the guy who say upscaled DVD were better than Bluray is suddenly noticing pixels and frames..
Again reviews for those games you mentioned are the same and the overall experience will be the same on either platform.
I could counter that and say that both LA Noire and Portal 2 (both which are bigger games than then ones you listed) are better on PS3 but I know that difference is minimal at best…but they do have some major difference since they both have extra content and features on PS3 but I’m not going to make a big deal about since the core game is the same on both platform…just like 99% of all the other multiplatform games.
Motion blur seems like it was part of the game itself as it happens even on the PC version. Just like KZ2 had motion blur when when moving your weapon…you have to go out of your way to turn it off on PC.
http://www.overclock.net/pc-games/958221-motion-blur-really-annoying-crysis-2-a.html
Crysis 2 looks beautiful but once you spend 10 on it you start noticing the all the poor texture in the game.
August 31st, 2011
Roca I’m just trying to protect you from other people like you who could point out you have claimed something as fact and not really provided evidence.
August 31st, 2011
On a side note I was just looking on lens of truth and I have noticed allot of games are brighter and sharper looking on the xbox.
The benefit I noticed from this for the ps3 is games like Space marine look more gritty on the ps3
August 31st, 2011
Sure they do

“Crysis 2 full game: Better on 360 despite what some sites say”
You mean, despite what professionals say? Only one site I know of claimed Crysis 2 looked better on 360 and that was IGNorant. They were totally biased in that review, how many times did they say “The best looking console game of all time is on the 360″? Which there was a fallout because of that biased review. The amount of times they kept mentioning how much better the game looks on 360 was a joke.
They do it will all multiplats where the 360 has a slight advantage, like Enslaved they kept saying “the game can have the occasional frame rate dip …especially on Ps3″ or any other negative comment about the game in general they always added “especially on the Ps3″ but when a multiplatform game runs better on Ps3 like Portal, Noire, etc it never gets mentioned.
There’s only one unbiased reviewer on that site and that is Greg Miller who’s very fair with a reviews he has done.

Oldschool
I’ve played the game quite a bit on both systems. and it is better on the 360, you don’t need digital analysis or a “professional” to tell that. it’s blatantly obvious as soon as you start playing. when you stand still both games look identical, but as soon as you move, the PS3 turns to rat shit, with the screen looking like it is suffering from extreme pixel lag on the refresh with an end result that looks badly blured. the 360 is better but not all that good, and among the worst of any modern FPS.
most other games including Homefront, DNF, Bulletstorm, deadspace & vanquished I can’t tell the difference

@ Roca
“the guy who say upscaled DVD were better than Bluray is suddenly noticing pixels and frames..”
WTF. . you make this crap up as you go along
I said I had a rip of the BLU ray of Avatar that was around 4 gigs in size and fitted on a DVD
I challenged any of you to tell the difference between the rip and the blu ray, and that challenge still stands. I have the blu ray too before anyone asks. Even on freeze fame the rip stands up to scrutiny.
So you’ll need to find someone else to pin that “quote” on Roca.
September 2nd, 2011
Professionals disagree with you. End of.
September 7th, 2011
4GB ripped movie won’t be in full HD (native 1080p) and probably have shitty sound.
Netflix HD is a downgrade from Bluray.

“I challenged any of you to tell the difference between the rip and the blu ray, and that challenge still stands. I have the blu ray too before anyone asks. Even on freeze fame the rip stands up to scrutiny.”
I’ll take that challenge.
Is it on a TV or a 24″ PC monitor?
I’ve seen HD rips and I promise you, I can tell the difference. Especially on my 65″ HDTV
