Resistance 3 vs. Gears of War 3: story trailer media blowout
September is here and that means one thing – the official holiday season is about to kick off with two titan franchises facing off during the month.
From a sales perspective the Resistance franchise, while highly successful, is still the underdog when compared to the Gears of War series. These two franchises have a history together as the first games came out in in November 2006. The sequel to the two franchises then released side-by-side in November of 2008.
This year, Resistance 3 just released Sept. 6, and Gears of War 3 will release Sept. 20.
In anticipation of the release for both games, the studios have released a new story trailer over the weekend.
Resistance 3 **NEW** Story Trailer:
Resistance 3 is definitely going back to its roots as a survival shooter, moving away from the militaristic direction Resistance 2 took. The result is an undeniably eerie yet atmospheric Resistance game that feels like an end of days game.
Gears of War 3 **NEW** Story Trailer:
One of the biggest criticism’s Gears of War received in the past besides its problematic multiplayer mode is around its lackluster story. There are engrossing bits in the side arcs, but the main story can get convoluted at times. The new trailer for Gears 3, shows a different and clear direction that the game will be heading in. With the refugees splintering from the island, the story will be about a new journey and less around the political strife with the government.
Resistance 3 **OLD** Story Trailer:
This trailer came out back in June and is more action packed when compared to the new trailer, but still manages to carry the somber atmospheric quality of the latest trailer with the theme of survival.

This trailer came out back in May and really shows what the Gears of War series is all about and its all about kicking ass and taking names.
For many with both the PS3 and Xbox 360, its a no-brainer to pick-up both games. However, for some that are budget conscious, they may have to decide on which one to invest their hard earned money on.

Gears 3 is going to be an amazing game. I already have it pre-ordered and its Day 1 for me. I really enjyoyed playing through the story of 1 & 2 and Im sure I will enjoy 3 just as much.
I just hope they make the game as bug-free as possible. While finishing up Gears 2 on Insanity I got glitched quite a few times, which was pretty weird because I had just played through on normal and did not get glitched once.

Both these are must haves.
I didn’t really like gears 2 all that much, I felt it played to slow and clunky, like killzone 2,
The multilayer looked very different and way better, so I have high hopes for this one being a better game to play, for me anyways.
I liked resistance 2, and from the clips I’ve seen for 3 it looks like possibly one of the best shooter so far.

I had little excitement for Resistance 3 until I recently saw a developer diary where they explained the weapon wheel will be back, and weapons would upgrade over time with use via Ratchet and Clank. This also makes new game plus that much better going into the beginning of the game stacked.
I’m sure Gears 3 will be a great game. Epic supporting the MP with dedicated servers is really a big thing. The improvement over the lackluster servers in Gears 1/2 will be hugely noticeable. It’s nice when everyone as similar ping rather that one guy (the host) dominating.
Rumor has it MW3 will have a 32 player mode. If that’s the case this will be the first time a COD games supported dedicated servers on consoles.
A smooth online experience is key….

lol yeah, that part wasn’t that hard for me and my nephew. I was being a smart ass and picked up the grinder before that i stepped onto the raft so I could use it to defend myself during the raft part.
What came next…. the giant “fish” monster was the WORST part of my insane playthrough. I kept getting glitched in the middle of the damn boat and he would bite me into itty bitty pieces. It makes no sense that I had no glitches on my normal playthrough but glitches galore here on insane.
Insane was a great experience, but kinda weird. All the parts that I thought i would have a problem on were kinda easy, like the flying section.
Best part in Gears 2 = Riding the Brumak! Fuck yeah that was awsome

Both of these games are day 1 for me. I hope Resistance carries on the tradition of amazing weapons and epic boss encounters(people hated R2 but it’s my best fps after HL2) and I hope that Gears ends well which I’m very sure it will. I just hope they have a better end boss than GoW2.

The entire game leading up was awesome! The highlight for me was inside the big worm. Something very satisfying about sawing through a artery lol.

Oh yeah cutting through arteries with the power and precision of a chainsaw mounted on an assault rifle is pretty awsome. I hated other parts of the worm though, like those damn things that slam down and you have to run past them. My nephew and I got hung up on those a few times. Very annoying. 2 people trying to run it at the same time can mess that up pretty bad.
Alan Wake was a pretty decent game, but it got repetetive. It certainly could have used a lot more variety in enemies as well as some other things. I still have a lot of achievements to get but I dont see me playing through it again anytime soon.
The graphics were pretty good, but it got realy tiring sitting there looking at forests in the dark.
There was one totally friggin awsome part in Alan Wake though…

What are you talking about? I played Resistance 1 and I hated it. The Graphics was crap and the button configuration was the worst. Sorry but FPS was mad for the 360 controller and the trade off was just unbearable. I couldn’t get over not using the trigger to shoot. Resistance was compared to Gears so much that when I tried it I couldn’t believe this game was compared to Gears because Gears was so much better. When you come from games like Halo and Gears and you play Resistance or Killzone, the feeling is just not the same because they don’t compare.
I’m not buying a PS3 because I don’t have time for it so get over it. I can’t change my life just for a PS3. I’ll be wasting money on something I don’t have time to play. I hardly have a chance to play my 360 so why should I bother with a PS3. I already don’t have enough money for what I want this year and getting a PS3 will just complicate my purchasing decisions. XBOX will always be my first choice, always.

The new one was boring and there was a reference to D-Day in it. Except they called it “E-Day”……Cant they come up with ANYTHING original?
The old one was retarded because they always use songs from that Phil Collins wanna-be singer. The song also made the trailer less dramatic. Typical.
I also saw some bosses that looked very similar to R2 and God of War.

I agree with you. Ps3 has shooting games but Xbox360 is definetely the home of shooters for the majority of gamers who are are into shooting games. Xbox360 has the best shooters and the best controller for this genre of gaming. Ps3 has the best controller for fighting games.
As far as the Ps3 goes, it is nice to have both systems but it is not necesssary. It would be a waste of money for you to get a Ps3 since you don’t like any of Sony’s titles and you already have a blu ray player.

This is comparing apples to oranges. Gears is Xbox and Resistance is PS3. I have a Xbox and of course will buy Gears, but would like if they would cross platform Resistance. But then again it would be much cooler if all games were cross reference. There have been several games only to PS3 I would like to play but… Can’t afford both systems and I am a fan of Xbox.

Well I get Resistance September 6 from GameStop I paid the full retail price already and as for Gear of War 3 this game has a weak story I play the leaked version not worth buying, but since I got the previous 2 I will finish paying my pre-order copy in full when it comes out.
If you can buy only one and you own both consoles like me get Resistance 3. It will have all this better then Gears of War 3 story well duh, multiplayer for sure and graphics no doubt. If you not lucky enough to own a PS3 yet give a try or at least rented for a day or two even if you regret it later as you will for sure.

I think im starting to get frustrated with GT5… and its stupid shit that is doing it.
When it comes to customizing the color of your cars Forza definately has the edge here.
I friggin hate the idea of not being able to change the paint on my car UNLESS I have already collected a “paint chip” of the color I want to paint my car. And of course these “paint chips” are limited to how many cars to collect (1 per car)… Thats pretty shitty.
Then they get even more restrictive…
If you’ve done the Lupo cup you know there are only 3 Lupos to get and 2 come painted in as Rally cars and unfortunately you CANNOT paint over them.. WTF? damn that sucks. The 3rd, and standard, Lupo that you can paint is the reward for finishing the Lupo race lmao… By then you don’t need it cause you already spent your hard earned creds beefing up the Lupo you just used to win the race LMAO.
I really wish GT5 would have more customization options. I can’t even stick new wheels on a car unless its considered “PREMIUM” lmao is that a joke?
Its also ashame that I can’t add any decals or anything like that to my cars either…. I’ve seen some of the cars done in Forza and FUCKING WOW!

Tried the demo of it when it came out and I didn’t like it.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Gran turismo 5. It’s an awsome fucking game. The things I mentioned above are certainly not stopping me from enjoying it, it just would be a more complete package if they were in the game. I mean why not? GT5 has pretty much everything else!
I’ve been on GT5 like every day, 2-3 hours a day or more, since I bought it. I haven’t even played any other console games in that time.
Only other thing i’ve been playing is Sins of a Solar Empire on PC. Damn that game is sweet.

I’ve never really been much of a mario kart kinda guy…. the most I ever played a kart style game was Diddy Kong Racing on N64 and I had gotten so far into it and my cousin erased my file so I was pretty pissed and that was it for me lol
Id give GT5 a 9.5 easy. It has almost everything anyone could ask for in a racer. Just those few things that are frustrating lmao.

#1 Top Gear Test Track race 1 – VW Sambabus WTF!? I have not yet been able to come in first in this friggin race. Very frustrating. I keep getting hit and disqualified. Yet somehow I managed to come in first in the Kubbelwagon race on the first try.
#2 My B-spec drivers. I give them a car that is tuned up and probably 70+ HP over the competitors, and then they get retarded on me. I’d sit there and watch the race and they blow away the competition and suddenly during the last 2 laps or so everyone starts to catch up.

Yes, the lack of customisation and the difference in available options between the standard and premium cars are my main gripes with GT5.
Forza easily outstrips GT5 in that sense.
Don’t get too frustrated with the Top Gear Challenge as it’s easily one of the hardest of the Special Events. Just leave it just now and come back to it later in the game after you’ve become a better driver. (not to say that you’re not good already
)
As for the B-Spec, if they are flagging towards the end of the race I would suggest you keep an eye on the stamina of your driver. If they get given a car that is too fast for their skill level their stamina will deteriorate faster as it will if you are constantly giving them instructions throughout the race.
My route through the game was to do A-Spec first and then go back to B-Spec when I had a massive advantage over the opponents in terms of car power.
This will save you any time spent doing races that you don’t win.

Yeah that damn Sambabus challenge is a pain in my ass lol. That thing has like no HP. I was playing it yesterday before I went to bed… trying it while tired is not a good idea lol. When I saw the Kubbelwagon challenge I was like oh crap! I thought it would be much harder but I beat that on the first shot. Lots-o-credits! lol
My one driver is like level 14 and he does pretty good on the races. His stamina doesn’t drop down too low either… It usually stays above halfway by the end of the race.

One of the best cars I got so far is the Ferrari 512BB ’76
Probably the cheapest and best Super car to get your hands on ASAP.
I’ve been able to win a bunch of different races with this amazing car.

- La Festa Cavallino
- Gran Turismo World Championship

Thats all I got at the moment. I’m almost on level 20 and haven’t seen the Extreme series yet. Thats still a lot of races that I can use that Ferrari on though.
Using the 512BB is pretty challenging though… Thing handles like crap until you put some time and effort into it lol. I got the settings just the way I like it and it handles so much better. I have it almost fully tuned. I have just about everything except for the stage 3 engine work. It currently has 524HP and it pretty much tops out with 554HP once i perform the stage 3 engine tuning (i’m holding off on that)
One thing that certainly was challenging was finishing the La Festa Cavallino race with the 512BB. That race is all Ferraris and the 512BB is easily the weakest out of the bunch. It took some skill to pull out a win against the friggin Enzo. That shit has 659HP and it is FAST. Also you get the California ’08 for finishing first, so the race is easily worth it.

Configurable controls is the argument against me LOL. Sure I probably could have but I was only trying it out at a buddy’s house and didn’t think to do that. But it still doesn’t save face because it’s well know that the PS3 triggers are crap which is the reason why that are not used for FPS games on PS3. Most people who are serious buy the attachment which is something I would do if I ever got a PS3. Here is the bottom line. I expect that out of the box the controls are suppose to be perfect on default. I have never changed any controller configuration in my life except when I’m using the steering wheel for a racing game. Don’t give me this configurable controls crap. The game was crap and that’s that.

Oh I fucking hate the Elise challange! I never bothered trying it until after I beat the samababus one and OMG… Very frustrating. 20mins in and I could finally finish 1 lap. The weirdest thing is that it DQ’d me several times for no reason what so ever. I was in the middle of the track and didn’t even touch another car.
The problem with the Elise is that once you hit the 95-100mph range the car stears like a frozen turd on a pond of iced over piss. That is to say it doesn’t stear very well lmao.

I find games like Split second and NFS hot pursuit on PS3 really hard because of the triggers being difficult to use accurately, these same games play better on 360 because of the better throttle control

I will toss my opinion in here…
Racing
Fucking using L2/R2 on either controller. I prefer to use the right analog stick for acceleration and breaking. Gt5 is set up automatically for that and that is what feels natural to me.
Shooters
Honestly I have to go with the 360 triggers for this one. I dunno if any of you have ever fired a real gun or not but when you fire a gun there is an actual TRIGGER on the gun, not a bumper.
I’ve played Borderlands on both systems and I have to say it just feels better on the 360 version.

In my opinion, PS3s “triggers” are better for racing. They arent needle-dick triggers, they are pedals and have perfect width. Not to mention, the Dualshock 3 has the best pressure sensitivity for all of its buttons. With that said, in racing games, its not about mashing the trigger and letting it go when you need to start/stop. Its about how much gas you give the car by how far you press down the pedal.
For Example. In GT5, with Automatic transmission ON, you might be in 3rd gear and you approach a turn that needs you to be in 2nd gear. You dont need to completely let go of the pedal to make the turn. Instead you can let go lf it for a little, and you can give the car some precise constant gas so you can smoothly speed around the corner at a good speed. On 360, you have to slow down a lot or youd spin out/understeer while trying the same method. The sensitivity is shit on 360. Not precise, not accurate……Not realistic.

The steepness and length of the Dualshock 3′s grips/handle are more authentic too. They feel more like a gun handle than the 360 controller.
AND if you combine those 2 factors together, PS3 has the edge for shooters.

The 360 trigger resembles a gun trigger as much as the PS3 pedals do.
Just because the 360 trigger is thin, you cant compare it to a gun trigger. Especially if the PS3 pedal has a more authentic feel and simulated pressure for both shooters AND racing.
The 360 trigger is shit and you know it.
The only thing I like about it is that it has a plastic ridge underneath it that prevents Accidental trigger pressing.
But the ridge is so badly designed that it cuts the circulation off from the finger you rest underneath it (mostly the middle finger).
For the record, if you like the thiness of the 360 trigger Sooooooooo much, just trim down the PS3 pedal manually or get it customized. Jackass. Then you have the outside feel of the 360 trigger with PS3s authentic pressurized feel.

Wow. Your a bigger idiot than I thought. First gun I ever fired was a German WW2 98K Mauser rifle. It’s a beautiful gun that really showed the essence of german engineering. It is certainly a collectors item among guns and one that I would like to own one day.
I’ve also fired a remington 12 gauge shotgun, a couple more rifles, and a couple hand guns. Nothing quite as nice as the Mauser though.
I’ve actually mentioned most of this before, so if you didn’t keep your head wedged up your ass you probably would have noticed.

I’ve fired more weapons than any of you lot(except Carl, he’s served A LOT longer than me) and I think the Ps3 is the closest to it. The only difference is there isn’t the final bite point(that’s what I call it).

Yes, of course the 360 trigger is shaped like most traditional triggers, being concave and not convex, however there is the sensitivity on PS3 controllers and you do squeeze the trigger if you are a serious shooter.
That said, while I am certified expert in both the pistol and rifle, and I used to be a dragon gunner, grenadier, and anti-tank assaultman, I do not play that many shooters, and haven’t really noticed a phenomenal difference in 360/PS3 controllers as far as the trigger goes, nor have I seriously compared them in shooters. I prefer the PS3 controller mainly because of the D-pad and it is not nearly as bulky overall, but the 360 controller is fine.
I don’t think anyone would have a serious problem adapting to either unless they were in the WCG, and they seem to prefer customized controllers anyway.

Maybe we’ll figure something out with MAC/Space A someday. Tbh, every time I’ve met Brits (Royal Marines, Embassies) I always left with a positive impression. Overall I think those people I met did more with less and in the cases I’ve seen, worked harder and dealt with more hardship with less recognition (nor did they ever express a hint of need for it). Guess I’m going to be “that guy” again, but I do not like Resistance 2, and if R3 is anything like part two, it’s a definite no buy.
Cheap deaths, impervious enemies, terrible story, an utterly forgettable main character… it’s only saving grace are the weapons, but Insomniac is known for it’s imaginative weapons.
Not to mention the game is ugly…
I sincerely hope R3 is much better. On that note, Mass Effect 3 is set to be the best damned game ever… Has anyone seen the new combat trailer? If you loved ME2, then ME3 is set to make your bollocks explode

I’m with OS on this, I liked R2 even though is has some flaws, it’s good fun overall.
Graphics reminded me of halflife, though I’m sure in places they were slightly better. In fact I think the whole game reminded me of the first time I played through halflife, which is probably why I liked it.
If you want cheap deaths try God of war. that game made me smash my dammed controller over my knee.. so now the think is kinda hanging open on one side, I have to say the 360 controllers can take much more of a hit than the PS3 ones

Well controllers weren’t meant to be punched. I can’t exactly imagine IGN running an article about which controller can take a better beating.
GoW doesn’t have cheap deaths, I suppose if you’re rubbish at the game you would think that. I completed the game on it’s hardest setting and I can tell you that the game can be played tactically. You need to really think about how to approach every battle(especially the cerberas flame spitting, dog exploding monster at the end).
R2 has cheap deaths, GoW does not. You just suck, dude.

Yeah I get the appeal of Resistance 2 but I guess it just isn’t for me. I’ve been playing through it though, getting trophies where I can. And I kind of get what Gods is saying about the similarity to Half Life, but I would like to say it reminds me more of that old Xbox game called Area 51. Loved that game.

As for god of war, cheap deaths come in the form of blind jumps, or just plain hard to judge jumps, often with odd camera angles. (rotating bridges with archers on far side ring any bells. In hades blind jumps if you need to back track, and as for the god dammed vertical rotating bladed things. . that’s when the joypad took a thump, Jesus, that was even more annoying than the kick the box around parts.
over all a good game though, but I’, really annoyed that I was 63 units away from getting all weapons at MAX power, lol, need to replay the last bit to see if I can find an extra kill somewhere

Hmm.. well, I’d have say whilst Portal 2 is all around better, Portal one set that legacy in stone. It was such an underground game…a sleeper hit. And it’s kind of the same reason why I listed Halo 1 over, say, Reach. Only a fool would say (aside from story) Halos 2, 3, and Reach weren’t better than 1 from a gameplay perspective. I just enjoyed the first time I fought the Covenant and the bloody Flood scared the piss out of me when I first played it. Just has a special place

I know what you mean about GoW, but thing is you probably hadn’t played the previous ones prior to playing 3. Specifically GoW 2, when you get the Icarus wings the game coddles you and teaches you the platforming, whereas the 3rd game kind of expects you to “know it”. But there are some cheap things in the game though, like the bloody challenges… argh! I done em though
And good luck with the Raven mate. Very sturdy and solid. My only complaint is that when I try to play Black Ops multiplayer with it, it’s a touch too sensitive. I play Mass Effect with it mostly, and no problems there. Just let my little brother use it cause he’s used to the 360, and he has no problems playing Zombies with me.

There’s a way to earn unlimted red orbs while fighting Ares.
In the first battle with him, don’t complete the button sequence. You earn lots of orbs and can do it again and again.
If you end up in Limbo fighting a bunch of yourselves you did it wrong and completed the sequence.

I know the feeling you’re talking about. The first Prince of Persia is by far and away my favourite despite the sequels having bettter graphics, gameplay, features, etc. Nothing will beat the first time you do a wallrun – it just felt so unique.
I think the reason that I don’t feel the same way about Portal is because I played it two weeks before the sequel was released. So I knew that it was going to be a great game. But then, I immediately played the sequel and it trumped the original in every way.
Also, nostalgia is usually a big part of why people prefer earlier games. You have it for this game and Halo, so you prefer them.
