Who will win Battle of the Shooters 2011?
Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3? Wait, what about Uncharted 3? They’re all shooters, they’re all brilliant, and they’re all being released soon.
Shooters have become the dominant genre of gaming now, at least amongst the hardcore. So while the casual mainstream are puzzling over puzzle games and socializing over social games, the hardcore elite are busy aiming bullets at each other online. But only after playing through usually far-too-short-for-their-own-good campaigns.
The popularity of first-person shooters means that every company wants to produce their own, and then release them just before the holiday season kicks in and everybody’s thoughts turn to Christmas. So we get a glut of solid shooters, most of which are released within weeks of each other. The question is which will win this year’s fight to the death?

Battlefield 3 – 35% of all votes
Uncharted 3 – 18% of all votes
Modern Warfare 3 – 14% of all votes
Gears of War 3 – 11% of all votes
Rage – 8% of all votes
Halo 4 – 8% of all votes
Resistance 3 – 3% of all votes
Killzone 3 – 3% of all votes
Bulletstorm – 2% of all votes
I left Halo 4 in there so that I could take easy potshots at the idiot who submitted it and the even bigger idiots who then voted it up the list. Halo 4 may indeed turn out to be a great game, but it’s still a full year away from release, you total and utter f*ck nuggets. Are you just completely stupid or are you such big fanboys that you cannot look past one franchise? It’s a shame, it really is.
I expected Modern Warfare 3 to top this poll. After all, the Call Of Duty games top the bestsellers list year after year. It didn’t even manage second place on this occasion, with Uncharted 3 beating it. While this small poll may not mean much in the big scheme of things, I have heard a lot more about Battlefield 3 in the build-up to its release than any previous Battlefield title. Which must be sweet music to EA’s ears.

The series has done exceptionally well since its conception except for a few hiccups…(COD3, W.A.W, & Black Ops). Beside those awful games the Call of Duty series is a safe bet to place for the best shooters category.

To get to my point, this site has become vastly overrun by PS3 fanboys, and while I’m not necessarily stating that it’s a bad thing, you definitely were not going to get MW3 at the top, and you’d have to be pretty thick to think that you were going to. The way I see it is this: because Microsoft has exclusivity deals with Activision and CoD, PS3 gamers (on this site and others) see that franchise as a 360 game (bollocks, I know) and see Battlefield as a PS3 game. Hell, one of the devs for Battlefield 3 was quoted as saying “Our PS3 game (BF3) will look better/be better than their 360 game (MW3).”
So I’m just saying you’d have to be mental to honestly think MW3 was going to top this list on *THIS* site.
C’mon mate, this is the site where the majority thinks Killzone 3 looks better than Crysis 2. Games on other systems will never get a fair shake here (notice how Crysis 2 isn’t even listen on this poll, when it’s clearly superior to R3 and….wait for it…BULLETSTORM?????)

Anyone else thought they did a great job making Resident Evil CVX HD and did a “just OK” job on Resident Evil 4 HD?
But fuck me if the trophies for both games aren’t horseshit…. twelve trophies PER GAME? With no platinum in either? Granted, I’m a Plus member so I got the games for 10 bucks each, but it’s pretty ridiculous to even ask for $20 for Code Veronica with a serious face… Oh and RE4 is going for 4 dollars on PS2.

I’m, with birdy for most of what he said, though, I think there are a lot of 360 owners who genuinely prefer the BF games. so the results of the poll are pretty much what I expected, though out in the real world, I think MW3 will still out sell it.

Regarding Crysis2, I wouldn’t rate it that highly, I think the environmental detail is right up at the top, but the refresh rate is too low, and the screen blur thing when panning is awful. I would rate games with cleaner moving graphics higher, even if it lacked the level of detail.
I’ve only seen the first few levels of Killzone3 so I’n not really able to give a final opinion on it but from what I’ve seen so far I would rate Gears 3 as the best shooter i’ve seen to date.

Yeah, I’m going to go with Gears 3 as being one of the best looking of the year. I (naively) thought Gears would look the same as Gears 2, but I was pleasantly surprised. They did an awesome job, and the colour palatte gives Uncharted 2 a run for it’s money.
But Gods, what did you mean specifically by you wouldn’t rate Crysis 2 highly? As in overall or the graphics? I’m curious.
If it’s the latter, there’s really no debate (among those who aren’t console biased): Crysis 2 is the best looking console shooter, and it’s not even close (as in, the concensus). Also I think the screen blur is intentional. It was the same in both Farcrys, and the first Crysis (assuming you haven’t played either). It’s also an awesome game, if you exclude the multiplayer.

Just played the Battlefield 3 beta …meh, unimpressed. Had high hopes as well, even the graphics are underwhelming. Killzone 3 is still the best looking console shooter this generation.

I think the beta was always gonna be rough though Oldy… they almost always are. God of War 3′s demo looked terrible next to the finished product (but it wasn’t THAT far off, to be fair.)
While I think BF’s graphics will most likely be better than, say MW3′s, it will definitely be an inferior game. Multiplayer, people can say what they want, and I have no opinion cause I say fuck all multiplayer modes. They’re all tacked on POS anyway. Single player is where CoD always shines, and it’s where BF almost always falls flat.

If you remember a good while back, I didn’t rate God OW3 at all due to the demo.
The Demo of Gods3 is piss poor, and I totally stick by my opinion that the demo for dante is better, both looks and the short play experience.
having played the full Gods3 game, I can agree that it does look stunning in places.

I like Crisis2 as a game, and I’ve just started playing through it again, but the blur is disappointing, more so on the PS3 than the xbox. On xbox the blur effect is nowhere near as bad. On the PC it’s almost non existent and is more of a deliberate graphical effect, and doesn’t just look like the machine wasn’t able to finish rendering before trying to display the next frame.

Second, consoles pretty much ruined Crysis….read the pc forums lf the game….they reduced it to be more “CoD” like and removed vehicles and the openess of the first game….which is why on consoles, Killzone 3 is on par or better graphically…
As far as being “disappointed” with the graphics in BF3…. You guys are forgetting DICE turned destructible walls OFF for this beta…and your still missing the vehicle side of things….its only 50% of the gameplay and bf3 already spanks whats out there with one level lol

I think the reason for the disapointment was because all the clips I seen was for the PC version, didn’t see any console clips so it was a bit of a shock seeing how much worse off the console version looks. This gen is starting to show it’s age.

I kind of understand that though Bats. Most of the time, betas are largely in a state of flux, whereas a demo more represents the official product (not always, as I said before). As an alpha and beta tester, I’ve seen games do full 180s when it comes to tester or consumer input. Demo’s, while they can change considerably, often have certain mechanics set in stone. Perhaps that’s a minimal difference to some, but to devs, it’s kind of a huge difference.

Hmm… my opinion is quite the opposite, and antagonistic to your opinion there. The reason being is that religion has persecuted others for millenia, and I’m kind of amused that other atheists criticize religion as fervently as they do. It’s kind of a just desserts thing.
I have no problems with religion, personally, and hey if people want to believe in medieval fairy tales, far be it from me to tell them otherwise. It’s just that when the uneducated attempt to argue science or try to tell others how to live their lives (like gay or lesbian people) I get miffed.

I played it at Best buy and Walmart. Too bad the monitors were only 720p so there’s no benefit of the upscaling abilities of the 360.
With that said I though Ghost of Sparta was actually crisper. Likely because it’s natively 1080p. I can’t believe that was a PSP game..
Anyone who hasn’t gotten it yet..Do yourself a favor. At least rent it.

compared to COD – it sucks.
compared to BFBC2 – it sucks even more.
The beta is an old build of the game and have destruction turned off and no vehicle. The map is also pretty small compared to other maps on BC2. To be Honest, BC2 has maps so huge that a few COD missions can fit in them.
God of War 3 – the game has one of the best graphics this generation. The beta was a little compressed but it still look better then most games out there.

Chains of Olympus took me 7 hours and some change.
I’m 6 hours into Ghost of Spart and I’m on my way back to Atlantis.
God of War 3 took me 14 hours to complete.
All on Hard difficulty.

I have to admit that I was suprised by the graphics of Gears Of War 3. The graphics are more polished then I expected them to be. This game is definetely the best looking Gears Of War game.

The whole place starts falling apart and your constantly climbing and jumping. You get blown out of the volcano Joe vs the Volcano style and land in Atlantis on your way to Crete.

I also enjoyed it too. I just can’t see getting a 360 for that one franchise. Hopefully Epic gets with the program and makes in multiplat next gen.

CoD has always been known for its story, even being a bf fan, will admit CoD single player campaign absolutely spanks bf “story” if you can call it that lol
Multiplayer though, CoD is like putting on training wheels on a tricycle….

Well Gears already did 3 Million for the first week. I only expect MW3 and BF3 to outdo it due to Multiplatform. Halo Anniversary should place 4th or 3rd and then there is everything else.

Sales do matter. If a game is highly rated and it doesn’t sale well, then the game makers are not going to loose money by making a sequel title or another similar title so it does effect gamers. It’s nice to get high review scores . However, I gurantee you that the majority of game makers would rather make money from game sales then have a highly reviewed game that doesn’t sale well. No business likes to loose money.

Review scores are an opinon. Sales are the determing factor, bottom line. We can bring up Duke Nukem which got a bad score but many people loved the game.

If the highly rated games don’t sale well, then your choices of buying only highly rated games and new franchises could become limited. The bottom line is money talks and everything else walks. Regardless of how most Ps3 people feel about sales, sales do matter in the long run.

Two words Twilight:
Mass Effect.
Example of a game that sold relatively poorly, yet is a critical success, and now we have a second sequel.
Sales only matter to shareholders and the folks behind the scenes. I never understood why gamers would even think about something as arbitrary as sales, when it almost never concerns them. Play the games, and shut up about sales has been my motto.

if a game is good sales will come in the long run. Look at LBP and Heavy Rain and Uncharted for example.
Mass Effect is another great example of a great game with not so great sales.

That’s just it; it “ended up” only selling roughly 2 million copies– Considering Mass Effect 1 was on 360 and PC, and the game is now 5 1/2 years old, it should be well over the 3-4 million mark, especially taking into account the spike ME1 sales reportedly incurred from the PS3 release of ME2.
Comparatively speaking, Gears of War sold over three million copies in just ten weeks, and was a new IP.
Your theory holds no water here Twilight.
To gamers. sales mean nil, and certain games just don’t sell that well, regardless of how good it is.

Consumer buys Black Ops because of sales instead of reviews.
Consumer plays game.
Consumer gets poop- Bad graphics, bad gameplay, bad UI, P2P servers, decent story mode.

As a developer, its THEIR JOB to try to sell it to you as best as they can. They do that by bragging about their game. Having Perfect scores and awards helps very significantly.
If you apply for college, its your job to try to sell yourself to that college. Youre supposed to brag about all your achievements as a student. They will love that and it earns you a spot in a college. Colleges want to pick the best students so their own college gets represented well. So that they have a higher grad rate.
COLLEGES GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT HOW MUCH PEOPLE LIKED YOU AS IT DOESNT DEFINE YOUR QUALITY AS A STUDENT.
GAMERS GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT SALES AS IT DOESNT DEFINE THE GAMES QUALITY AS A GAME.
Sales is not our concern and is so stupid to make it a determining factor of a games quality. Its not important to us at all unless youre a follower who follows the crowd.

Regardless of how long this game was out, two million units of sales is still a decent amount of sales for a new I.p. There are games that have been out a shorter and longer time then this game who still don’t sale as much as this game. Sales do matter. A good example of this is Ps3 game sales. Why do you think the game developers brushed off making games for Ps3? Simple. The high cost of developing games for Ps3 in relation to the game makers return profit was not worth it for game developers. On the other hand, game makers were making a profit off Xbox360 games. Once the sales of Ps3 games went up, more developers came on board with Ps3.

Back when mass effect 1 was releasd the xbox had a much smaller user base of 8 to 10 million. Percentage wise 2 million sales would have been considered very good back then.

Well Twilight’s point was that since it was a new ip and sold roughly two million (the correct number is roughly 1.8 million) it should be considered a “success”, sales wise. Mass Effect 1 and Gears 1 came out in November 2007 and November 2006 respectively. Both were obviously new ips, yet Gears sold more in 10 weeks than Mass Effect did in 4 years (corrected myself from 5 1/2 years in my post above). Both games were critically acclaimed, so there shouldn’t be that much of a discrepancy in sales. What you’re saying about the install base is true, however Gears vastly outperformed Mass Effect in sales, yet Mass Effect 3 is due in 5 months, effectively proving my point that sales do not matter to gamers. We (the relatively small amount of people who bought the game) demanded a sequel, just as the fanbase of KOTOR did (another poor selling, yet stellar game).
Also you have to realize that Bioware released Mass Effect 1 for the PC in May 2008, effectively widening the install base from 8-10 million consoles to 8-10 million consoles AND over 80 million PCs. So I’m saying that, yeah, 2 million sold within an install base of 90 million is poor.

That’s a good point, but Twilight was pointing out new ips. Halo was established 2 games prior, and already had a fanbase. Still though, Halo does kind of point out that even with the relatively small install base, games that are well received *should* sell well, but it isn’t always the case.
Mass Effect was just one of those hidden gems… I’m glad that it’s now getting the respect and recognition that it deserves.
