Battlefield 3 screenshot comparison: Xbox 360 vs PS3 – BETA
A debate that is starting to heat up is around which console version of Battlefield 3 is superior on. Its a given that the PC version beats them all, but this is not as clear around the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.
Early this year DICE, the developer of Battlefield 3 did a presentation at GDC around how the studio was able to tap the PS3’s CELL CPU to do SPU-based deferred shading in Battlefield 3. This is the same type of technology used in Sony first party titles such as God of War 3, Uncharted 2 and Killzone 3.
There is no doubt that those titles are graphically impressive, and many asked if this tech would help improve the PS3 version of Battlefield 3.
Considering that there are no like-for-like single player campaign builds out yet, the only thing that can be analyzed is the multiplayer beta. Lens of Truth did their analysis across the Xbox 360 and PS3 version on the early beta.
It should be noted that this is an early beta on an unfinished game, and also that textures are usually toned down on multiplayer modes over the single player mode.
Lens of Truth’s initial analysis indicates that there is a bit more screen tearing on the PS3 version when compared to the Xbox 360 version. However, it should also be noted that the screen tearing mostly occurs at the top of the screen.
Pushing screen tearing above the screen is a normal technique game developers employ to increase performance without sacrificing visual fidelity.

The first thing LoT noticed is that the PS3 version has bloom effect, while the Xbox seems to lack it. Another difference is that the Xbox 360 version seems to have more jaggies in the textures, while the PS3 version seems to be more smoother.

Again in this comparison shot the PS3 version seems to have less jaggies overall compared to the Xbox 360 version. Another thing to note is that the PS3 version seems to be using sharper hi-res textures.

This one was rather disappointing as the Xbox 360’s gun is using blatantly lower res textures, while the PS3 version has higher-res textures on the gun. Also, noticed the jaggies on the Xbox 360 version in the background.
It appears that the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are very close. However, there are some notable differences in the beta. The PS3 version seems to suffer from more screen tearing, but again seems to be isolated to the top of the screen. The PS3 version does seem to utilize more effects such as bloom as well as employ higher res-textures over the Xbox 360 version.
Since this is an early beta, its difficult to tell if some of these things will be ironed out by the final build of the game.

Hmm… seeing as how the PS3 is the lead console for dev time, I am not surprised if the PS3 version looks better– however, one would think the 360 would benefit from the trickle down effect, and look good nonetheless, which doesn’t seem to be the case. I wouldn’t say it’s too far fetched that EA is purposely gimping the 360 version, to which I say
LMAO.
Hey, devs that sided with 360 during the early console wars did this to the PS3, so it’s karma
But this article is straight up flame bait, and you know it Mike

MIKE
THE FLAMEBAIT KING!!!!
The game isn’t even out yet.

This is a multi-platform title. When all is said and done, this game will be equal on Xbox360 or slightly better on Xbox360.

Besides the jaggies I would say the 360 screen shots look better. I was saying that before I even noticed the red circles and realizing which was which.

CAD
Lol your such, ms cock sucker
” Besides the jaggies I would say the 360 screen shots look better.”
Which would have been fine except..
I was saying that before I even noticed the red circles and realizing which was which.

Fucking touch,screens….
How the hell did you say the 360 looked better, when you admitted to not being able to tell the,difference…..hypocritical xbitch…

This is surprising as the XENON GPU is stronger with better shading and anti-aliasing.
They had to do this on purpose. For the PS3 to actually beat 360 at anti-aliasing?? Come on.
However, as for the textures, thats definitely PS3s strength.
Screen tearing is common, so i dont care. I even see it on Chains of Olympus HD.
The worst screen tearing ive ever seen was on Assassins Creed 2 and AS BH. Every other game is decent with screen tearing.

PS3 able to produce much better AA than the 360.
September 30th, 2011
Mike now that I’ve read the article I’m LMAO. Only you would try to put down something that obviously looks better on the 360 LOL. The PS3 can keep that “Bloom Effect”. All you have on the 360 is AA which means nothing when your moving and fighting baddies. You sir are pathetic! I’m sure things will be much better when the game comes out.

WHO THE HELL CARES!!!
THESE COMPARISONS ARE POINTLESS! just because the ps3 has better textures and no jagged corners,is not going to make the game any better, more interesting or the story any better. it’s the same damn game, same experience.
i know for sure that if i am talking about battlefield 3 with a friend, and he has a xbox and i have ps3, he’s going to know exactly what i’m talking about.
me: did u remember the park where u passes under the light and it gave this glow effect? how about the part where u shoot the guy in the head and the texture on the gun looked awesome?
friend: no! who the hell cares? i was concentrating on the game.

Wow! just Wow!
Again its Microsuck the drag queen …. dragging everybody down!
It has dragged progress, innovation and quality in the gaming industry and mobile industry.
Disc swapping in 2011?!
shitty graphics in 2011?!
Man M$ can’t even think of a creative OS name: ….. Windows Phone 7 Mango!?
What the hell does windows had to do with mangoes?
Mango OS from Apple iOS?
Kinect from Kinetics PS2 game?
Wow!
Now cutting edge developers are held back again with its old and shitty hardware!

Wow CAD, I’m surprised you could see anything with Balmers ballsack covering your eyes.
Fucking fanboy.

CAD must be the only person on the planet to think the 360 version comes out on top. There’s not much difference, they’ll both look great but the clear winner is the Ps3 version. Even professionals say so, but CAD they’re wrong so they must be, right?
I can guarantee if the pictures were reversed, just change the 360 logo with the 360 one he will claim the other one looks better and “Bloom effects” ftw lol.

Looking at these pics side by side, it’s become clear the time for the next gen consoles (both NXTBox and PS4) has come. Too bad we won’t see them until 2013 (Wii U doesn’t count as far as graphics are concerned).
October 1st, 2011
I could wait a year or two CB. I think this gen still has some life left.
October 1st, 2011
Well, I really don’t care which system has better graphics. I will be getting the superior version of this game on Ps3. Besides, when it comes to actually buying games, I tend to suffer from a severe allergic condition to buying Xbox360 games.
Phranctoast,
I am not in a hurry for the next generation of gaming either.
October 1st, 2011
I just got the early access code for Uncharted 3 multiplayer.
October 1st, 2011
I agree with you more than you know phranc. Although I will be happy either way, the difference in graphics now is harder to ignore now than it was just last year.
Personally I think seven years is more than long enough, but M$ and Sony have already stated this would be an extended console generation, so at least there is no surprises there.
According to DICE, the PC version “could see 64-player games, whereas consoles will be limited to 24.”
“The three main consoles have remained technologically stationary, while PC hardware is improving exponentially… Console games are more expensive (a significant cut goes to the console manufacturer), and the difference in price is unfair to consumers who are playing games that are, in fact, worse.”
The good news is “The technology they’re developing will help form the foundations of future advancements, including those that go into the next generation of consoles.”

So I can wait also, as it means we should have that much better of a product when the next gen finally does roll around.

According to some data, more than 80% of PC gamer will need to purchase a new PC or upgrade their PC specs in order to play BF3 at maximum settings..
October 1st, 2011
@Roca, not me mate, my PC’s running it just fine.
But having said that, as someone who put something like 400+ hours into BF3, and at last count something like 230 hours into Bad company 2, I’m bitterly disappointed with it.
I don’t know yet if it’s the map, which frankly promotes spawn camping, or the weapons (I was head shot by a guy across the map with a DAO-12 with a scope!!) but I’m going to keep playing the beta in the hope that it gets better.
October 1st, 2011
Which data? Besides, that’s maximum settings; even medium settings would probably still look much better than consoles and still allow for nearly 3 times as many players in game.

Fix the squad debacle and tone down the flashlight that burns with the pweor of a 1000 suns. Also, I hear there is regen. health on fucking vehicles.
Ugh. I’m getting sick of being slapped around the face
Oh well, Tuesday will make me feel all better (on a console ironically enough!).

Need to wait for the finished game to make a proper call on this.
For now I would say the PS3 has the better version, but not as far in front as I thought it would be all things considered.
I think both show a lot of jaggies in places, but the 360 version almost looks like it as no AA at all, bit like GT5
on another note, I’d rather they sacrificed some unnecessary lighting effects or something to remove screen tearing and to get a good refresh rate.

“I think both show a lot of jaggies in places, but the 360 version almost looks like it as no AA at all, bit like GT5″
I dont know what you mean by that? Was it a flamebait? Ah, who am I kidding? You’re Godless, of course it was.
October 3rd, 2011
It wasn’t a flamebait… Remember this is Godless we’re dealing with. We all thought his comments about Kameo looking and playing better than all R&C was a flamebait as well…. Oh how wrong with were.
Kind of reminds me about the time when he claimed Dante’s Inferno looks better than Heavenly Sword lol…. Or Vanquish looking better than KZ2.

To everyone that said they would be getting the superior version of this game, I take it you mean the absolutely gorgeous looking PC version? Which supports an insanely large number of players…
November 28th, 2011
This is so fucked up, any retard can tell this is some cheap review on the pc version with toned down graphics to make it look like there’s a difference, i have it on the ps3 and by brother has it on the 360, the gun looks nothing like that. This is so stupid i cant believe people fall for this bullshit.
