Microsoft: Biggest sales week in Xbox history on Black Friday
Earlier today Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 saw its biggest sales week during Black Friday in the US. This is big news for the console considering its in its seventh year out on the market.
Major Nelson posted some news earlier today revealing that Microsoft sold 960,000 consoles in the US during the week of Black Friday. Not only did the company move a ton of 360s, Microsoft also sold 750,000 Kinect peripheral devices in the US (standalone and bundled).
The sales figures are impressive, but for some odd reason there seems to be a lot of hate around this announcement on Major Nelson’s page.
Microsoft is pushing hard in the US with massive Kinect advertisements targeting the casual crowd this holiday. The company spent nearly half a billion dollars last year during the launch of the Kinect. I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft is funneling a similar amount of cash to what seems like a significant marketing push this holiday.

I wonder how many of the 960k 360′s sold were part of the 750k Kinects sold.
These numbers are impressive, but I must admit, as a gamer I’d much rather have lower numbers while the brand I preferred didn’t turn their back on me.
It’s almost as if MS is trying to get their original audience to throw in the towel and move on to their competitor.
Kevin Butler is secondary in Sony advertising to Microsoft pushing their audience to the PS3.

I think the results gunstar posted were taken from the web search engine data, so while the PS3 may well have been the most looked at item, it is not necessarily the the best selling.
Ultimately this data means nothing, sales are what matter at the end of the day.
Last week the 360 sold over half a million units, with the PS3 at 380.000 or so, I’m guessing the PS3 will not have been far behind in sales.

I’m not surprised by these sales figures at all.
Since the 360′s life span is only 2 years before it RRODs, the entire user base needs to replace there consoles every 2 years. Given the fact that they were so cheap, many took advantage of the sales.
Still even at $100, I wouldn’t buy one. Not buying a console that charges me to unlock my games (online play).

Well Black Friday is mostly a US/North American thing. It does not surpise me for the 360 who has the majority over PS3 in the US to do well during this event. After this PS3 will be back to spanking the 360 in TOTAL WORLDWIDE SALES after this. The gap is so close and PS3 is going to sell more units in the end. So what, Microsoft kicked Sony in the nuts this gen compared to last! If it were not for Microsoft you would not have seen half of the awesome exclusives on the PS3 that you have. i’ve bought 3 Xboxes due to hardware failure and like I said if it were to break again I would probably buy another one because for all it’s faults the 360 is still a good machine with some decent exclusives.
If people honestly think repeat buyers ain’t at least partly responsible for thr 360′s success then you’re living in lala land.

Why did you not just send the machines back for replacement?
My mate (the only one I personally know to have a 360 fail)sent his back 3 times, eventually they gave him a new 250GB slim,
He had no proof of purchase, he hadn’t even registered the machine and they replaced it each time with no questions asked, The third time it was sent back was due to a disk try problem caused by his daughter leaning on the try heavily when it was open, this should not even have been covered under the warranty.
MS can not be faulted for the support offered, it was the primary reason I felt confident enough to buy a 360.

Microsoft is killing Sony in sales in the U.S. Like Con stated, the price cut has not helped Sony all that much in the U.S. Apparently, most Americans just don’t seem to be interested in the Ps3. Even if their Xbox360′s fail, it seems that they would rather keep buying Xbox360 after Xbox360 then just get a Ps3.

in the UK, the 360 is outselling the PS3, by something like 2 million units. US & UK are the 360 strongholds.
In the UK the 360 is just 1 million units behind the Wii sales. by the end of gen the 360 may well have passed Wii sales, I think that makes us the smartest nation on the planet, or maybe just the least gullible

On the subject of repeat buyers boosting sales:
My personal experience is that ALL of my friends who own a 360 have been forced to buy 2-3 new 360′s after they have failed. Granted some were replaced by MS, but the majority were bought and count towards sales.
Contrast that with my PS3-owning friends, now. I only know one person that has ever bought more than one PS3 – and that’s me!
It might just be coincidence but you never know.

Yup, MS blew it big time! Started off strong and Kudos to them for the marketshare they gained, but my 360 is on it’s way to a garage sale. PS3 is where most of my gaming takes place. They went too casual for my liking and took too long to put out reliable hardware. I’m on my November 17 2006 60GB(replaced with 320) PS3 and still going strong wile I’m on my 5th 360. I have not touched the 360 for a long time, it’s pretty much dead to me. Bring on the new shit already, I’m so ready for it!

The PS3 launched in Nov 06. To get as accurate numbers as possible it makes sense to go to the next fiscal period which is coincidently enough Dec06′. The PS3 had a poor start due to a very limited release with many shortages. It was also not even out in Europe at that time.
I think it perfectly fair and reasonable to show the success of the PS3 by showing the most the 360 lead by, and then showing what they lead by now. How the hell wouldn’t that be fair. It’s almost as if you don’t want to count the 360′s second holiday season because it makes the success of the PS3 sales that more trivial.

I also want to point out that at the end of 2006 the 360 was 1 year old and the manufactures warranty was expired. It took MS an additional 7 months (July 2007) to extend the warranty to 3 years. Any console that broke from Nov 06 to June 07 wasn’t getting covered and those people would 100% be repeat buyers, unless they simply gave up on the 360 and sold all their games.

Let’s be honest, it’s the games that’s important not the sales.
Put it this way, Microsoft like it or not have sold more consoles than Sony this generation but Microsoft don’t have as many high rated exclusives as the Ps3. They even make a lot of money from Live but still the games are not the same standard as Ps3s games. In the end sales is a silly thing to argue about.

I’ve had 3 360′s and I’ve had to buy a new one every time because of living abroad. It’s no big deal, 360′s are not that expensive but it definitely contributes to it’s sales figure.
I remember the Ps2, I got it on day of release and had to have it replaced 13 tines(seriously). It was either vibrating the whole house or giving me the Disc Read Error when trying to watch a DVD. Fair play to Sony they came to my house and swapped it every time. I’m sure the same would be true of MS but like I said I never had that luxury because I was abroad.

I would say between 6-7 million 360 sales were repeat purchasers. 3 million due to the no warranty for 7 months, and the rest due to other wear and tear either not covered or from fat models being replaced by slim models.

What I meant by that was that this is exactly the reason why Sony offers a much better and varied gaming lineup to gamers on a yearly basis. Microsoft can’t even compete anymore.
Sony has so many developers to support multiple platforms (PS3, Vita, PSP, etc) while Microsoft can’t even support one single gaming console.

None that I know of but the games where it can be used as an option are brilliant implemented, like Killzone 3 and LBP2.
The thing about Move is that it’s mainly an alternative way to playing certain games, it’s not forced on you. I can’t say the same for Kinect.

I don’t see any reason to eliminate the standard controller option games anyway.
That’s simply what makes Move games vastly superior to Kinect games. They are core titles that can utilize the peripheral but they don’t handicap the game by making it “Move only”
There’s also many Kinect titles that would be better done on Move, or with a controller option. In fact minus dance and exercise games, all of them would be better with Move.

I don’t have a Kinect, but if I did, I would check out Gunstringer, Project Draco, Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor, Ryse, and Star Wars Kinect.
When I get my 360 back out of shipping, I might check out:

and the PS3 boys are loving it
I particularly love the fact that they are shit talking the Kinect, because of their complete and utter inability to see that the games it offers are good games, “for the target audience”. (kids & casuals)
the wii & Move do not have offer the same experience despite what Roca thinks, and I think the success of the device shows that it has something people want.
As for Child of Eden, this game is shit with a controller, it was a game designed for hands free,and it works better than any other I’ve seen. The controller option is there, but is not really playable, until you actually play the game I don’t expect you understand. Hands free is what make Child of Eden good, without it it’s not worth playing.

Child of Eden works very similar when dual Move units are used, but it’s a complete bitch of a game with a standard controller.
Move is just a heavy bit of kit to wield around for a hour or two, when child of Eden doesn’t need it with kinect.
Child of Eden is truly the first game I’ve played where I thought, “this actually works” you REALLY ARE the controller, and the lag free gaming makes it an immersive experience much more so than playing the game any other way.
Hands free is the only way to play that game, and for it to feel the way it was meant to feel.

In fact child of Eden is proof, if any were needed that eyetoy can’t do motion tracking.
All that eye toy would need to do is track your hands, and watch for an open hand swoosh movement for fire, and it clearly can’t do it, or it would have been done.

The fact that Child of Eden is rated just 3 points lower on the Move shows the game is just as good on Move as it’s on Kinect.
games that get released much later on other platforms tend to get a lower score (by few points).. Like Oblivion, Mass Effect 2, Bioshock, and etc.

I honestly think Move, Wii-motion, and Kinect each have their own strengths and can have their own unique gaming experiences. Move and Wii both use handheld controllers, so of course they are going to be the closest to what has already been done with traditional controllers.
Kinect has the most potential for a different, more unique gaming experience, or to supplement traditional controls in unique ways because of the nature of it’s design.

They are already making more than enough money off of Kinect right now from the casual market with only a few good games. 360 is making more than enough money off the core market with a few exclusives and a ton of multiplats. When sales slow down they’ll release NextBox and Kinect 2, and they always have the option to release a subcontroller or other devices at their convenience down the road.
Wii, and to a much lesser extent Move, already have the handheld motion controller market wrapped up, doing things in games that seem to work just as well with traditional control. Controller free gaming is the one thing that currently differentiates Kinect, and that seems to be working for them.

I see Move being a more capable device for gaming and would rather see that option in the future for the Kinect.
There’s so many games which due to popularity of the Kinect device only appear on there that would be so much better in a ganeplay perspective on Move.
Kinect just seems too limited as a true gaming peripheral.
I guess if Dancing and exercise games turn into my genre of choice I know where to turn.

I guess I’m just different in being more than happy enough to play those games built for a regular controller with my controller instead of Move/Kinect, and only desiring games built from the ground up for it, like Sorcery. I feel the same about Kinect, but I’m more attracted by the appearance of games like Gunstringer and Project Draco than dance and exercise games.

Gunstringer is a prime example of a game that would be better with Move.
The way aiming in Gunstringer works as is, is you paint your targets. Then the character jumps out of fires off the shots.
Traditional aiming/firing, and this way would both work better with Move.

That didn’t seem to be the case with Child of Eden. Either way, I think there is a fundamental difference between holding a relatively bulky controller (or controllers) and simply gesturing with your hand (or hands and body). I think it would also have a different feeling in games, perhaps more free flowing, if they were done right. Again, each control scheme has it’s strengths and weaknesses.

I’d take a bulky controller in my hand for a lightsaber game, tennis, golf, bowling, or anything where the subtleties make for a difference in the game.
Where accuracy is concerned you’re SOL with Kinect in these situations.
Of course with Move, you’re SOL when the legs come into play, making those Dancercise games better for that device.

I would also take a controller wand for a lightsaber, tennis, or golf game (not so much a bowling game, IF the hands free option could accurately read my hand – Kinect 2 perhaps), though I would prefer none for fighting games, unless they had weapons. I don’t think a controller is a necessity for RPG’s, RTS, QTE, or puzzle games either, or games like Flower and Flow.
I think IF the potential was reached for Kinect (likely Kinect 2- accuracy to recognize digits, responsiveness), this is what I would wind up with as preferences:
Traditional controller/Kinect enhanced (voice/face/gesture recognition support)/Wii-mote/Move:
FPS/TPS
Weapon based fighting games
Racing
Object based sports games (racquet, club, etc.)
Platformer (I’d be too lazy to jump around and pantomime for that long)
Shooting type action adventure
Hack and Slash type games, including action RPG’s
Traditional controller/Kinect/Kinect enhanced:

I would also be interested in some martial arts type of training games on Kinect, and I think anything done well on iOS would be nice to adapt also (like Infinity Blade).
As you can see, I still put the traditional controller first, and Kinect would still be able to enhance all types of games desirably if done right.

I love the Echocrome 2 Demo. I haven’t bought it or anything off of PSN after getting plus because the second I do, it will be available for free

DS extraction is also cool. I held off playing it more until I got a second controller cheap (which I did) so I can play with another person. Unfortunately there is a controller option for Extraction but it’s worlds better with the Move.
I’d say the same for The House of the Dead remake.
The Shoot is pretty cool if not annoying with the Director sounding like he wants to bend me over.
I should give that RTS demo a shot. I think it was Rouse..?

Out of the Demo’s I’ve played, Yes.
I haven’t played Sports Champions though.
Eye Pet was mixed. Obviously it’s not geared to me, but the augmented reality of it was cool, and the way the Move appears as different devices. The ‘pet’ sometimes wouldn’t respond to the actions in the demo.
I also didn’t play Move Heroes.
Played the Bowling game (forgot the name) at my Brother in Laws, as well as Tiger Woods.
Tiger Woods is interesting. On one hand the game isn’t one to one with motion..but hey..it’s a golf game so who cares, but on the other it could detect the small subtleties that make or break a swing. It might be too realistic for it’s own good.
MLB The Show was pretty damn cool with Move.

Where you guys see Cons for Move, such as having a controller option I look at it as a Pro. The types of games I like to play has not changed. I just now have another option if I want to utilize it.
