Naughty Dog: The Last Of Us first trailer unveiled

December 11, 2011

Naughty Dog: The Last Of Us first trailer unveiledThe Spike VGAs just wrapped up and Sony’s secret game has finally been unveiled at the show. As it turns out the game is being developed by Naughty Dog, which is quite shocking considering that the studio has been working on Uncharted 3 these past two years.

The trailer reveals a breathtaking city that has been ravaged over time due to an outbreak of a modern plague. As humanity is on the brink of being decimated, survivors are now killing each other for food and weapons to survive against the infection.

TLOU-1

Two characters are introduced in the trailer, Ellie and Joel as they are fighting off another scavenger to be then greeted by a group of man-eating infected creatures.

The graphics is mind-blowing and clearly surpasses anything seen to date on the consoles and quite possibly goes toe-to-toe with the best on the PC. The textures and details on the ruined city with shrubs and foliage is amazing.

The Last Of Us reveal trailer – Make sure to watch in 720p HD!

There is still not much detail around the gameplay and world of The Last of Us. One can only speculate that this may be a third person survival game, and quite possibly taking place in an open world setting.

Creative Director, Neil Druckmann indicated that he has been working on this project for the past two years. However, the idea or design for the game may have existed since 2006 as indicated by the YouTube’s channel page for theLastofUs.

TLOU-2

According to Evan Wells, Co-president of Naughty Dog, The Last of Us is set to release in 2012. On the PlayStation blog, he details some information about the game.

The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind. Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States.

TLOU-3

Wells also indicated that he will be talking more about the game and how Naughty Dog has been working as a two team studio under the radar all this time.

“The Spike VGAs just wrapped up and”

the winner of GotY is… Skyrim, along with best RPG of the year.

All right, I’ll go for three years in a row and say that if it releases next year, GTAV will take GotY. If not, then Mass Effect 3.

  2. oldschool1987:

“the winner of GotY is… Skyrim, along with best RPG of the year.”

    Definitely agree with this award.

So, this makes me a proud PS3 gamer.

    Last of Us looks Amazing!!

I was surprised to hear Naughty Dog is the dev team behind this.

We might finally have a “cinematic” horror/survival game with a great story & acting.

  6. CaptBirdman:

Don’t be too chipper there though, it’s not the same team that developed Uncharted 3 or Jak.

Trailer looks cool, but I’d be apprehensive about a new zombie game at this point. And I LOVE zombie games..

  7. oldschool1987:

“Don’t be too chipper there though, it’s not the same team that developed Uncharted 3 or Jak.”

They seem to be just as talented in the graphics department though, it looks graphically superior …can’t see any jaggies lol. Plus I don’t think any development team could work for Naughty Dog, they’d have to have a certain level of talent to put games out under that name.

  8. phranctoast:

Speaking of jaggies. Just finished with the rage demo. Omg. If jaggies alone define good/great graphics them Id has some problems.

  9. Roca.:

Naughty Dog is developing it and it looks amazing. Certainly, better than all survival horror we have seen this gen.

  10. oldschool1987:

@ phranc: Rage is an unbelievably stunning game to look at. Graphics are a 10 from me. Texture pop in distracts a lot but when it’s settled it looks amazing. Shame the gameplay sucks.

  11. jojo29:

To be honest about The Last of Us…not really my cup of tea…been disappointed int he survival horror genre since after RE3/Code Veronica were the last ones i got really into and that was due to me liking the story…RE5 was pretty cool..

But this game has a couple things going for it…its not freaking Capcom making and its Naughty Dog behind it ( who cares what internal ND team is behind it, ND is ND ) so im sure this will be a pretty cool game…im actually a bit excited, loving the atmosphere…

This frees up the main team of ND to work on both the new Jak game AND the HD remakes <—-NOW im excited as the Jak games are some of my favorite of all gaming, did they say if they were going to do a Ratchet HD remakes?

  12. Roca.:

Last of Us is developed by Naughty Dog, not another team…maybe they weren’t giving 100% as the game has been rumored to be in development for over 4 years

    from the Naughty Dog website:

“We’re very excited to confirm that The Last of Us is developed by Naughty Dog Inc, the creators behind the UNCHARTED, Jak and Daxter, and Crash Bandicoot series”

“Sony Computer Entertainment America ANNOUNCES THE LAST OF US, A NEW PLAYSTATION®3 EXCLUSIVE DEVELOPED BY NAUGHTY DOG
LOS ANGELES, December 10, 2011 – Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC announced today The Last of Us, a new franchise created exclusively for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. Developed by Naughty Dog, the creators of the highly acclaimed and best-selling UNCHARTED™ series, The Last of Us was unveiled in a world premiere trailer at the Spike TV 2011 Video Game Award Show.”

  13. jojo29:

Theres two “teams” within Naughty Dog, but the point is moot as its still Naughty Dog…just was trying to point that out to birdy as a retarded statement he made regarding the issue…

Ive watched the trailer thrice now…im hooked…officially excited

  14. CarlB:

    “Last of Us looks Amazing!!”

    Cutscenes

    *yawn*

  15. Godless:

    LOL, Such a sceptic ;)

“@ phranc: Rage is an unbelievably stunning game to look at. Graphics are a 10 from me. Texture pop in distracts a lot but when it’s settled it looks amazing. Shame the gameplay sucks.”

After playing the demo, I decided that it’s a rental at best. Hopefully someone I know has it and I don’t need even rent it. It was pretty jaggy full though. I’ve tried to pay close attention to this recently , and I was surprised by the aliasing.

  17. phranctoast:

The Game is being developed by Naughty Dog. Regardless of what’s been shown that alone should excite anyone. They have not released a bad game. That’s some track record and beats the hell out of any other company I could think of.

  18. Roca.:

cutscenes in a Naughty Dog game is usually part of the whole gameplay+cinematic experience..with seamlessly transition from gameplay to cutscene and vice versa.

The director of Last of Us has worked on all 3 Uncharted games.

Naughty Dog is already calling a ‘genre-defining experience’…and this genre is in need of something fresh.

    @Phranc
I have Rage and the game has some bad texture, rendering issues and jaggies. Looking too closely at the world of Rage (walls, objects, etc) sometimes it looks as if the game is cell shaded.

  19. phranctoast:

I’m looking forward to Ubisofts I am Alive also. I hear they turned it into a downloadable game however.

  20. dans303:

“I’m looking forward to Ubisofts I am Alive also. I hear they turned it into a downloadable game however.”

Same here. Any idea when it’s coming out?

  21. jojo29:

    Guys about Rage
Get it on PC….some games should just stay on PC…aka Skyrim, Rage….

    Phranc

Blizzard has not released a bad game either…in fact their games set the standards fro their respective genres as well….Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft and of course WoW and each of those series sequels and expansions :)

  22. Roca.:

don’t forget about Team ICO and Sucker Punch

  23. phranctoast:

“Same here. Any idea when it’s coming out?”

No clue. Downloadable titles are sketchy with dates. I didn’t even realize Strangers Wrath is coming out this month until very recently.

Blizzard is pretty good. I would like to see what they can do away from their comfort zone. By that I mean, a game not Warcraft, Starcraft, or Diablo.

“don’t forget about Team ICO and Sucker Punch”

Both have a long way to go before they get that treatment. SP only has two IP’s. Same with Team ICO.

  24. jojo29:

    Phranc
Blizzard out if their comfort zone? They got to leave some genres left for developers lol what i want from blizzard is a fully cgi cinematic movie…

Their cgi, which is in house is simply put the best in gaming period…only other developer with their own in house cgi team that comes remotely close is Sqaure Enix….

Pixar looks kiddy comparrd to Blizzard, and blizzard doesnt have nowhere near Pixars budget

Ooops my bad in the double post

  28. phranctoast:

“Blizzard out if their comfort zone? They got to leave some genres left for developers lol what i want from blizzard is a fully cgi cinematic movie…”

    LOL.
The Movie would be cool. I’d like to see what they can accomplish. We’ve seen what Square can do with Advent Children and Spirits Within, which was very impressive IMO. It’s time Blizzard gets some big screen time then.

“Ready at Dawn Studios, [71] creators of Daxter, God of War: Chains of Olympus and an ?kami port for the Wii.”

It’s funny that you mention Ready at Dawn in this topic. It’s especially ‘on topic’ as ex-Naughty Dog employees comprise of the other founding members.

  29. jojo29:

    Phranc
So true :) about Ready at Dawn

  30. Roca.:

    good read

  31. jojo29:

Arenanet gotnthe bulk of the best of Blizzards “creative” members, ex Diablo/Warcraft and Starcraft members, who have a directorial or creative hand in thise games…which is why its doing so good…guild wars was pretty awesome, and GW2 looks to rock the mmo world :) and its free to play

  32. CarlB:

“Get it on PC….some games should just stay on PC…aka Skyrim, Rage…”

I disagree. It’s a given that nearly all multiplatform games look better on PC now, but we are happy to have the opportunity to play the same game on our consoles.

  33. CarlB:

    “LOL, Such a sceptic”

It’s true. I’m not going to go all gaga over a game until I get to at least see some kind of gameplay. As with UC, I value actual gameplay in games (amazing) over cutscenes. All we’ve seen so far is snippets and hype.

  34. jojo29:

    Carlb
yes i agree, its great everyone gets to enjoy Skyrim, but i have had only one bug, the backwards flying dragon, and one CtD, whereas im reading your giys experience with the game and actually was a determing factor of which system i bougjt it for…

That and i knew hotkeying/mods/addons would be a no no on consoles….i love being able to push one number key to switch out my fire ice spells to conjure/spark spells ;) is all im getting at…and less bugs….

I suport cgi cutscenes done proper by the likes of
    Blizzard
    Square Enix
    From Software

Of course gameplay has to be there but its like this:

    I love cheesecake…
    I love cheery cheesecake more
and yet two cherry chessecakes are even better ;)

  35. CarlB:

    @jojo,

Yes, I’ve only gotten the backwards flying dragon once since I’ve started, no other problems on PS3. Maybe it’s because I have a Slim. What is CtD?

Let’s put it this way, I wouldn’t love that “cake” or even get excited about it if I only saw the cherry on top. Especially if I already have more than enough real cake that I’m actually eating now.

  36. jojo29:

    Gotcha
So the bug problems are a bit exaggerated, but as long as you are enjoying the game same as me….

CtD is Crash to Desktop >< right now im enjoying being the Thane of Dragonreach and currently am the baddest mage out in Skyrim!!

  37. CarlB:

Hell yes, though I am a bit jealous of your resolutions ;)

Right now I’m trying to max out the Enchanting Skill and level up to where I can max out a good set of Daedric Armor. Just a few more quests before the Thieves Guild is restored to its former glory. Not much can survive my 15x 45 sneak attack (and that’s only using one hand and soul capture for the enchantment).

  38. jojo29:

Yeah we get to play on some high resolutions ;)

Im loving my ice storm/spike spells, nothing like seeing a big ass ice spike on a dead body, followed by soul drain, to remind ya of the power of mages :)

Loving every single momentbin this game, just tore town a dwarven steam machine giant thing ;) that thing had me running around all over the dungeon lol

Also, im trying to level my enchanting as well, so i can add the reduction of magic use on most of my gear :) along with blacksmithing to make good rings/necklaces/staffs

Got set back a bit though when my horse got killed….animals love crossing over my LoS :(

  39. CarlB:

“Hell, Mass Effect 2 is better than Skyrim in every way.”
