Those new Xbox 720 rumors in full…

January 25, 2012

The rumors surrounding the next-generation of video games hardware are arriving at an increasing rate of knots. Which means one thing: the next-gen is definitely on its way. Unfortunately it also means we have to determine what’s true and what’s false. And whether these rumored features are good or bad ideas.

Holiday 2013 Release

I’ve been saying Microsoft will release its next console in 2013 for a while now, and it’s now being suggested that this is indeed the plan. Retailers will take shipments of the Xbox 720, Xbox Next, or Xbox Loop in October or November next year.

True or False = Highly Likely
Good or Bad = Good

Six Times As Powerful

IGN suggests the system’s GPU will be akin to the “Radeon HD 6670, which offers support for DirectX11, multidisplay output, 3D and 1080p HD output.” In terms of raw graphics processing power, the Xbox 720 is expected to be six times as powerful as the current Xbox 360.

True or False = True
Good or Bad = Good

From DVD To Blu-ray

Microsoft is expected to shift from DVD to Blu-ray as its means of playing physical media. I’d actually classify this as less of a rumor and more of an urgent need at this point in time. If the company doesn’t do this then they’re idiots.

True or False = True
Good or Bad = Good

Kinect 2

The Xbox 720 will ship with Kinect 2 built in to the hardware. This would seem to me to be a no-brainer. Kinect has done well as a standalone system, so why not improve it and bundle it next time around?

True or False = True
Good or Bad = Good

No Used Games For You

This is by far the most troubling rumor to emerge. According to Kotaku, Microsoft is planning to “incorporate some sort of anti-used game system as part of their so-called Xbox 720.” I’m not sure how legal such a move would be, but it would certainly be morally contemptible. Consumers should be allowed to buy, sell, and trade any goods they have bought legally.

True or False = Possible
Good or Bad = Bad

What do you think of these rumors? What do you want/not want to see on the Xbox 720? Are you as bothered as I am by the moves to stop people playing used games?

Everything seemed perfect until you mentioned the used game feature. Even if that’s true the case I think it’s safe to say that I will be an official Xbot in 2013. :-D

Microsoft I am glad to be back on the Xbox ship come 2013! :-D If the Xbox 720 has bluray, an internal slide drive like PS3, all of the multimedia features of PS3 like rewind, fast forward, copy media to and from the “UPGRADEABLE” harddrive, and the ability to copy and paste game saves, I’m in!!!!

The 720 better not have RROD problems like 360….sorry Sony. You guys pissed me off to much with bad decisions this generation…I’m rejoining the Xbox crew if all goes well. :-)

  2. The Future of Sega:

The power is within Sony’s hands to release PS4 late this year or early 2012 to shock everyone. If they allow Microsoft to release the next gen console before them AGAIN….then they are truly stupid. WISE UP Sony and forget about your success you had with PS2! This isn’t 2000 anymore it’s 2012!! New day new thing. :-)

  3. oldschool1987:

You’ve missed out that the 720 (according to rumours) will only be 20% more powerful than the Wii U.

I would say Not Likely, and it most likely would be bad if it were true. The reason is it doesn’t make sense to add in such a cost for something that not everyone needs (or even wants) to use. It’s not like a blu-ray player. It needs to have a direct line of sight to the player(/s) which means if it were built in you couldn’t tuck the 720 away on a media shelf.

However, I could see it happening IF it would be made to be detachable (and preferably wireless), and if that’s the case, why not just avoid the added cost in the base model in the first place. Perhaps they could drive down the cost to where it would be negligible, but I doubt it. Of course it should also be more useful and functional for everything, which is also a possibility: enhanced recognition (to fingertip level) and able to control every application (to include compatibility with your theater setup/home electronics/lighting/security/etc.) without lag would go a long way towards this. Still, Not Likely. Kinect is to big to be built in presently and I don’t see them being able to fit even a smaller version into a next gen console.

“Everything seemed perfect until you mentioned the used game feature. Even if that’s true the case I think it’s safe to say that I will be an official Xbot in 2013.”

Vote with your dollar man! If you don’t like something a manufacturer is doing and it represents a major downward curve for the entire industry then wait for the competitors to provide a better product that offers more value.

“If they allow Microsoft to release the next gen console before them AGAIN….then they are truly stupid.”

Not if their product winds up being significantly better in many aspects… AGAIN.

  7. oldschool1987:

    ^Lol!

I’m surprised because I thought the Xbots claimed blu ray was irrelevant?

  8. Andrew_DS:

Xbots are damned if they do and damned if they dont.

Blu ray included and they will get told they are being shafted by sony (not sure why)

No blu ray and they will be laughed at for not including a current high capacity media.

Personally I think they will have to include blu ray for movies, but as the next gen progresses I think blu ray will become less relavent due to game and movie streaming.

  9. Andrew_DS:

The idea of stopping used games being played is also very worrying.

What happens in years to come when you want a game that is no longer available to purchase? Also what about collectors that want to build up a game catalog/collection?

Kinect 2 is should be included. I personally hate having to buy an accessory at extra cost to play a handful of games. But look at the Wii. It worked for it so as long as including Kinect 2 doesn’t stop MS including normal control methods then what harm will it do?

  10. Andrew_DS:

And finally. It being 6 times more powerful than the 360! Does that mean the re-release of Call Of Duty (but with a different number on the end) will be 6 times better looking but still exactly the same game as it was 5 years ago?

  11. Godless:

    “^Lol!
I’m surprised because I thought the Xbots claimed blu ray was irrelevant?”

6 years ago blu ray was irrelevant for a gaming console.
MS didn’t wan’t the console to cost an extra £100 so they didn’t use it (and quite rightly) MS didn’t make a > £350 loss on every console sold for the first year, and then spend the next 3 years making further huge losses on hardware sales. MS is not in the business to make losses.

blu ray is now catching on & costs have dropped, it’s now time to put it in a gaming machine.

I don’t think the next xbox will come with Kinect built in, if it comes as standard with the package at all (which I don’t think it will), it will be a separate piece of hardware.

The “no second hand games” thing, is something the devs have been working towards for for some time, that’s why most of the new games come with a code that unlocks the multiplayer, all they will do is extend the licensing to include the single player. So you will still be able to buy the game second hand, but the odds are you will then need to buy a licence and register it to play it on your console. just the same as all DLC works right now.

The performance thing is a bit confusing, a few months back they tell us the Wii U is a little more powerful than the current gen, then they tell us the next xbox is 6 times as powerful as the current xbox, & 20% more powerful than the Wii U.
Now either the processing power is measured on a non linear scale, that I can’t quiet get my head around, or the Wii U is a hell of a lot more powerful than we were first lead to believe.

Have Nintendo revised the |Wii U specifications following the shock response regarding its lack of power when first revealed?

  12. phranctoast:

“blu ray is now catching on & costs have dropped, it’s now time to put it in a gaming machine.”

Actually godless. The xbots have been trying to prove BRD as being irrelevant even with the next gen consoles.

  13. CON:

    RUMOUR MILL!!! WOOP WOOP!

Can’t wait to see the specs on the new consoles.

“The xbots have been trying to prove BRD as being irrelevant even with the next gen consoles.”

    Show me some quotes troll.

Sony and Microsoft are fully in bed with each other, especially in the pc/laptop market. The only doubts I have about bluray is that it isn’t necessarily designed for streaming multiple layers of data so maybe another format could be used for gaming purposes but definitely worth throwing a bluray player in for the casual audience.

6 times more powerful! GTA 6 springs to mind! Just imagine…

  15. Kushy:

“MS is not in the business to make losses. ”

    @Godless

Ummm, Microsoft lost roughly 4 billion on the first Xbox and it was dead after 4 years. Then they quickly move on to the 360 with crazy faliure rates for some time after launching. Companies know that sometimes you need to loose money to make money. Microsoft did not put Blu-Ray in because of HDDVD, not because they were scared to loose money. LMFAO, you are so blind and ignorant! :P

  16. Kushy:

Hmmmm, what add on was that for the 360 again? Oh yeah, a shitty HDDVD drive! Bwahahahaha this kid is a joker smoker! :P

“Actually godless. The xbots have been trying to prove BRD as being irrelevant even with the next gen consoles.”

CON beat me to it, this is not what the xbots have been arguing.

The argument was that Blu ray was not a necessary for a gaming console “this gen”. Sony had an alterer motive for pushing blu ray into the PS3, and it had bog all to do with gaming needs.
you only have to look at the size of 95% of ripped PS3 games, to know that they will fit with no problems on a DVD. most games use the extra space for making of Documentaries, and the likes, with only a small handful utilising the space for actual “gaming” purposes.

the argument that the space is needed for better graphics is a crock, You only have to look at PC to see, that Blu ray is not needed to make great looking games fit on a DVD.

  18. phranctoast:

    @godless.

“CON beat me to it, this is not what the xbots have been arguing.”

CON just got fucking owned by my link.

Before you tell me what the argument was about, I suggest you read about 400 or so posts on the link I just provided.

  21. phranctoast:

“Nothing has changed on this site, same old arguments over & over.”

The one thing that has changed is there doesn’t see to be really any competent xbots to argue with.

You for one, barely register to me as an xbot even though it seems Roca wants you to be one so bad to pick up the slack for the lack there-of.

ahhhh. how I miss the good ol’ days.

I recall and sales argument with kev and happy which ended in a bet that would have made the loser an “opposite fanboy” for a month.

    They both vanished.

This year I can’t make that bet. I would never expect MS to push out 8.2M systems in a quarter. My PS3 estimate is 6.6-7M for last quarter.

  22. phranctoast:

oh.. BTW. That link is a very good read. Things I straight up don’t have the time or energy to write are there.

  23. Barnabe Jones:

Radeon HD 6670 is mediocre at best. Given the fact that it might release next year, just compounds the short coming. Imagine 4-5 years past that?

The 720 is going to be a marginal step forward, and will in no way be the kind of leap that we saw with the Xbox to the 360.

Btw Kinect 2 is a bad. Who needs more shovelware? It would be nice if M$ actually focused on creating games and new IPs.

  24. twilight:

The only thing I have against blu ray is the slow disc reading speeds. I hate the fact that you always have to install games on the hardrive before you can play the game.

  25. phranctoast:

“The only thing I have against blu ray is the slow disc reading speeds. I hate the fact that you always have to install games on the hardrive before you can play the game.”

Yeah. You take the good with the bad. There’s at least no changing discs on multi disc DVD games, and it improves load times.

It’s games like MGS4 that drove me nuts watching Snake smoke a cig for a couple of minutes between chapters. lol

  26. Roca.:

Godless is such a fanboy that he expressed his desired for Microsoft to built their own gaming format for disc based game instead of supporting Bluray.

Not only for gaming. Most of the happy posts are him trying to prove how much of a failure BRD as a home media format.

How isn’t that an example of someone saying BRD’s not relevant?

His numbers were also way off. He had BRD penetration at something around 7% when it was more than double that at the time. Now we’re somewhere between 20-25% marketshare.

Whats even crazier is this was “the low” point for all the xbitches, before that, their lies and bullshit were even WORSE!!!

GOOD to see that myself, phranc, carlb, roca all pretty much comment with a level head and common sense….in comparison to the xbitches…dont believe me? “GOOD to see that myself, phranc, carlb, roca all pretty much comment with a level head and common sense”

  59. twilight:

    Jojo,
Yep, I’ve supported blu ray since launch. Blu ray is a great format. The only thing that I have ever complained about is game installs. I just especially hate the exceptionally long 20-30 minute game installs. At least these days, most game installs are not as long. I have to admit it will be funny if Microsoft uses the blu ray format in their next system. Of course, if Microsoft does this, they will be paying royalties to Sony because Sony is one of the companies that owns the blu ray technology.
    Oldie,
Lol. No worries. There’s no way that anyone would mistake you for this.

  60. jojo29:

Oh sorry oldie!!! I was at work when i typed and just listed names right off the bat

    Twilight
I know you knew back then :) you and the others listes always bring good topics ;) we might nit always agree, well fling shit at each other but unlike the xbots, a lot of what we say is accurate and based on common sense :) for the xbot who believe me, go back and see what we predicted to happen…happened ;) yall were wrong in almost all topics

  61. The Future of Sega:

Man you deleted my post from this morning Dave? Geesh thanks…

  62. CarlB:

“they will be paying royalties to Sony because Sony is one of the companies that owns the blu ray technology. Sony is one of the companies that owns the blu ray technology.”

So they’ll just be paying back the money they made off Sony using Windows in their products.

Lets clear things up a little bit about the slow Bluray read/write speed and installs that plague most PS3 games etc

“The only thing I have against blu ray is the slow disc reading speeds. I hate the fact that you always have to install games on the hardrive before you can play the game.”

When PS3 came out, the Bluray available at a cost effective price was a 2x speed Bluray disc. Xbox360 uses 12x DVD.

    At 2X speed

    DVD = 3MB/s
    Bluray = 9MB/s

    At 12X speed

    DVD = 16MB/s
    Bluray = 54MB/s

    At 24X speed

    DVD = 33MB/s
Bluray = 108MB/s (theoretical value, 24X Bluray don’t exist yet)

Right now, the highest speed achieved from Bluray is 12X speed = 54MB/s. So I doubt you will be seeing any install in the next Xbox or PS4 if either manufacturer uses a 12X Bluray Disc.

  65. jojo29:

Well, given how MS was and is the reason of the current Online Pass bullshit, i for one see MS leading the way for this money grab as well on the used game bullshit…fuck MS and their next xbox….if Sony keeps things the same as now, then i will support them…fuck MS and their greedy examples that i predicted would be followed by everyone else…thank all the dipshits who have paid for LIVE Gold….<—they set the precedent for all of us….

  66. jojo29:

    /throws oldie a hug :)

  67. CaptBirdman:

    @Jojo

    You’re so gay ahahaha

  68. oldschool1987:

    “You’re so gay”

  69. jojo29:

  70. jojo29:

Fml…..damn my dashing good looks…but hey, its all about options….hmmm who shall get my “jojo roulette surprise” first….birdy or oldie….points at both their eyes…ready aim….

  71. CarlB:

“Well, given how MS was and is the reason of the current Online Pass bullshit”

    Only Sony controls Sony.
They are responsible for their own decisions.
PSN Pass is Sony’s decision, not Microsoft’s.

  72. jojo29:

The example of charging for something thats been free all this time goes to Microsoft Carlb…

Also, ITS NOT ONLY SONY with the “Online Pass’ bullshit…Capcom, EA, Activision are all following suit, MS set the example with charging for no reason, thank them for that revolution…in all honesty, as long as there are stupid fucks that purchase LIVE Gold, its inevitable that some developers would like to follow suit….let’s just hope one of them caves, and im willing to bet that if enough people make a stink about it, Sony would have at least a history ( this gen anyways ) of listening to its gamers…

MS doesn’t give a shit about its gamers, hence look at the rumors already coming out about MS not even ALLOWING used games on their next console…it is a clear and present issue, and i share your disgust with it…but your wording is all wrong..you make it out that PSN is NOT free….when it was..your choice of words was poor as when you broke the news i really thought PSN wasn’t free anymore….

Online play vs Used Games are totally different issues…..

PSN Pass is trying to stupidly attack the used game market by limiting its online capabilities…it is NOT Sony ‘charging’ to play online…which implies ALL games like the piece of shit LIVE Gold service….<—thats all im trying to point out

But i agree…its a disgusting move STARTED by Microsoft, followed by EA/Activision and now Sony….

    OFF TOPIC
Sony is developing the new screens for the iPhone 5..crazy shit eh

    http://iphone5latest.com/

"Sony has also sent a top secret shipment of screens to Apple – so we just wait to find out whether it will be 4 inches or 5."

"It will support 1080p full HD. According to sources, one can fully expect to see an 8 MP camera on the iPhone 5 making it a breeze to get the best pictures and videos ever. Sony also confirmed that it had developed back illuminated stacked image (CMOS) sensors which are smaller and more powerful."

  74. CarlB:

The point is Sony specifically made a point of avoiding these types of practices over a year after Microsoft had implemented them. Now they have shifted their policy to the detriment of millions of it’s customers.

    “look at the rumors”

Unfortunately what once might have only remained a rumor now has a greater chance of becoming reality thanks to Sony’s recent actions.

“your choice of words was poor”

Saying PSN is still free at this point is like saying someone is still free because they are only chained by one leg and free to breathe. Millions of gamers who did not have to pay a tacked on fee of $10 before now have to. That, my friend, is not “free”.

“PSN Pass is trying to stupidly attack the used game market by limiting its online capabilities…”

    Agreed.

  75. phranctoast:

“Saying PSN is still free at this point is like saying someone is still free because they are only chained by one leg and free to breathe. Millions of gamers who did not have to pay a tacked on fee of $10 before now have to. That, my friend, is not “free”. ”

That’s kind of a dumb ass analogy.

You could say Online isn’t free since you need to pay the money for the system or pay the money for the game. Just stop it.

  76. CarlB:

It’s kind of a dumb ass mentality to support being charged for things we havent been before on PS3 exclusives. Just stop it.
