Assassin’s Creed III set during the American Revolution

March 2, 2012

Assassin’s Creed III set during the American Revolution Ubisoft has finally confirmed exactly where the next major installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise will take place. Initial rumors around the game revealed that Assassin’s Creed III will take place during the American Revolution.

This rumor was pretty much confirmed two days ago when an eager Best Buy employee sent a picture of the promotional material ahead of its official announcement. The image showed an assassin with a tomahawk attacking a British soldier, with the American flag waving in the background.

Today Ubisoft officially confirmed the location of the game with GameInformer teasing its next issue with an Assassin’s Creed III cover.

Reaction to the next setting for the game have been mixed, with some excited while others concerned about the future of the franchise. Platforming has always been a core element of the franchise, and given that the game will be taking place in colonial America, there will be a lack of tall buildings.

If the game took place in Ancient China, or even in London during the same period as the American Revolution, the terrain would make sense for an Assassin’s Creed game.

It could be that Ubisoft is taking the series in an entirely new direction, ditching platforming altogether. The publisher revealed that more details will be revealed March 5th at 5pm. The game is set for release October 30th later this year.

  1. FahKinSuPah:

I will probably make it a point to play revelations before 3 releases. 3 might just be worth checking out for me. I’m really into American history.

  2. dans303:

I kind of look at it like Brotherhood and Revelations were expansion packs, while this one is the true sequel to ACII. That’s why I’m psyched for it.

  3. FahKinSuPah:

Im gonna make a prediction for AC3.

The British are Templars and George Washington and the other founding fathers are really members of the Assassins Guild.

  4. dans303:

The Templars has ties with a lot of the American Presidents, so I’d be more inclined to think that Washington was a member of the Templars.

Also, I’m sure I read somewhere that there was some clue in one of the previous games that Washington actually gets his hands on a Piece of Eden after the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Don’t be so quick to blame the British. ;)

  5. Godless:

I need to get back to AC 2 and brotherhood and complete them. so I don’t fall too far behind.

I like the storyline of this game, It would make a great movie.

AC1 had too many handling issues for me to go back to it without getting overly frustrated with it (which is why I stopped playing it in the first place)

Would be a great game to see on next gen system, it could look beautiful, and is just the right kind of game to show off what next gen tech can do.

  6. Barnabe Jones:

In the movie National Treasure… wasn’t Ben Franklin a templar or something?

I’m really interested in this. I’m going to make it a point to get through Brotherhood and Revelations before this comes out.

  7. dans303:

“AC1 had too many handling issues for me to go back to it without getting overly frustrated with it (which is why I stopped playing it in the first place)”

I think everyone feels that way about AC1. But the step up from 1 to 2 is similar, if not bigger, to the jump between Uncharted 1 and 2. In other words – massive. Controls, variety, gameplay and story were all greatly improved.

  8. Barnabe Jones:

“AC1 had too many handling issues for me to go back to it without getting overly frustrated with it (which is why I stopped playing it in the first place)”

Can’t agree more. I forced myself through a lot of AC1, but just got to frustrated with it. AC 1 wasn’t very good. It was really overrated.

AC2 fixed all of the issues, and expanded on the good ideas from 1. Plus it added some new things. The story for 2 was really good too.

  9. phranctoast:

“In the movie National Treasure… wasn’t Ben Franklin a templar or something?”

    He was a Mason.

  10. phranctoast:

“AC1 had too many handling issues for me to go back to it without getting overly frustrated with it (which is why I stopped playing it in the first place)”

I have to disagree. It had issues, but handling makes it appear as if they were gameplay issues which I didn’t have. I felt the game handled gameplay (if that’s even what you meant) fine.

My problem with AC1, was the repetitive non important side missions. The pacing was also way off.

  11. dans303:

“In the movie National Treasure… wasn’t Ben Franklin a templar or something?”

From what I can find The Knights Templar formed a new Brotherhood when they brought the treasure to the New World, called the Free Masons.

Then, at the time of the Revolutionary War, the Free Masons hid the treasure again. At the time, Masons included such famous people as Paul Revere, George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin.

Now, some of Ben Gates’(Nic Cage) family were called Benjamin Franklin Gates, Thomas Jefferson Gates, and John Adams Gates. Leading us to believe that he(Ben Gates) is a Templar too.

So the short answer – Yes.

  12. FahKinSuPah:

    @Dans

I think it was mentioned before in AC that many times Assassins had infiltrated the Templars. Wouldn’t surprise me if that would be the case in AC3 with the founding fathers.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

BTW one of the reasons why I think it woudl make sense story wise for the founding fathers to be assassins would be the way a lot of the war was fought. Washington was known for his guerrila hit and run tactics. Alot of the revolutionary war was fought by the americans in a way similar to how the assassins guild would fight.

  13. dans303:

Whatever the outcome, I can’t wait to play this. The more we talk about it, and seeing the endless possibilities Ubi have with the game, the more I get excited.

  14. ncaissie:

“I will probably make it a point to play revelations before 3 releases. 3 might just be worth checking out for me. I’m really into American history.”
I am going to start AC tonight. I was going to last night but I needed to help my kids get kinect going. So far Disney is the only good one. It diserves a 98 score for sure.

  15. FahKinSuPah:

Does AC: Revelations come with an online pass?

  16. Godless:

    Fahk

Brotherhood had an online pass, I would think they all will from here on in.

  17. Barnabe Jones:

    Dans,

Good find again. Setting makes more, and more sense now.

  18. FahKinSuPah:

    @Godless

Brotherhood didn’t have an online pass. I borrowed it from my nephew and never had to put in any online pass.

  19. dans303:

    @fahkin

I’m glad for that, I might rent this rather than buy it now.

    Also, new screenshots:

    http://imgur.com/a/3NNkQ

I’m completely sold on this setting now.

  20. FahKinSuPah:

    @dans

those screenshots are fucking hot. As much as I love the AC series TBH I was beginning to get a little burnt out on it. I didn’t like the setting in Brotherhood as much as I liked the setting in 2.

Probably the one huge thing I loved about Brotherhood was managing my own group of bad ass assassins. Between leveling them up by sending them on missions or just calling on them to take random targets out was great.

  21. FahKinSuPah:

Also meant to say that the new setting renews my interest in the AC series

  22. ncaissie:

“Does AC: Revelations come with an online pass?”
Yes. After you get use to the controls and the pace this game is really good.

  23. FahKinSuPah:

    http://www.xbox360achievements.org/news/news-11011-Assassin-s-Creed-III-Story-and-Gameplay-Details-Spill-Onto-the-Web.html

Wow… These is some serious shit about AC3. Now I’m FahKin excited.

  24. CarlB:

OT: I know it may not seem like much compared to AC, but anyone who gets Rayman Origins is getting their money’s worth.

  25. dans303:

    @fahkin

I just read the Game Informer preview in full and my God this game is gonna be awesome.

    @carl

I checked out some Youtube videos of Rayman after Barnabe suggested it, and it does look like a lot of fun.

  26. CarlB:

Just finished the last level (well not the “secret” last level) and it was crazy jumping off all this stuff that was flying around… took me the better part of an hour to master… most colorful game I’ve come across in a long time, highly recommend it (unless you hate platformers).

I have to say I’m really liking Halo Reach. I’m on mission nightfall.
After more than an hour of playing my finger are cramped. That never happens with my ps3 controler. I think you xbots are accusing the ps3 of having the faults of the 360. I play through GOW 3 non stop and didn’t have that problem.
How far into the game is the nightfall mission?

Btw my gamer tag is therealncaissie

  37. ncaissie:

Where in the hell is everyone?

  38. Barnabe Jones:

    it’s the weekend. ;)

    Carl b,

    Yeah I love Rayman.

Did you beat all of the Treasure Chest levels? Some of those are insane.

I’m on the last set of levels…. maybe the last level, not sure. It’s when the nyphs open up the portal, and you fly though the clouds and lighting.

  39. CarlB:

I beat a few of the treasure chest levels and decided to give it a rest and come back to it later, because there is still the time trials, electoon challenges, and all of the hidden cages to get for medallions. That will take some time. And patience.

Yes, you are on the last set of main game levels, then get all the teeth and you can play the “secret” level. I was hoping the different characters would provide some kind of real performance difference (faster, jump higher, longer range attack), but no luck as far as I could tell.

“I have to say I’m really liking Halo Reach.”

    Xbot.

  40. dans303:

Would I be correct in saying that Rayman has a platinum?

    “Xbot.”

    http://i.imgur.com/fDKM3.gif ;)

  41. ncaissie:

    “Xbot.”

    Lol yeah.

  42. CarlB:

Yes, it has a platinum, but I don’t see your point in mentioning it.

  43. dans303:

“but I don’t see your point in mentioning it.”

Well I’d be much more inclined to purchase the game if it had a platinum to earn at the end.

  44. CarlB:

Don’t all PS3 retail games have platinums now?

  45. dans303:

Yes, but I figured it was just a PSN game which may or may not have a plat, like Resident Evil 4.

  46. Godless:

I guess it depends on what you are used to.

I’ve been told by a few that reach is the best of the Halo games, I did like the demo, but because I’ve never really got into any of the other halo games, I gave it a miss.

May pick it up now it going cheap.

Lol no, I don’t hate Sony and MS still sucks ass for ignoring their core gamers after they purchased consols and and have high attachment (or whatever it’s called) rates.

  49. Roca.:

ncaissie – “MS still sucks ass for ignoring their core gamers”

I guess you’re right. The Fable IP is officially shovelware now with Fable Kinect and Fable Heroes (XBL Arcade). Microsoft is really ignoring the core gamers. Forza going downhill? someboday was right after all ;)

    http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/04/fable-heroes-revealed-by-xbox-live-marketplace/

Also joining the 360′s shovelware lineup is “Forza Horizon – “a spin-off that offer a festival atmosphere & a more playful experience”

Microsoft don’t know what else to do to keep milking its only 3 IPs 8)

Well, tomorrow Mass Effect 3, Mlb The Show, and Game Of Thrones comes out on blu day. I have to buy this series. I haven’t seen this series yet but everyone keeps telling me how good this show is.
As far as Mass Effect 3 goes, I have a pre-order on both systems. I just have to decide what system to get this game for.

  54. Roca.:

Are you getting Motorstorm RC? I’ll be getting it tomorrow…one game less to worry about :D

which version of ME2 did you get? The smart thing to do is to keep playing the series on the same console.

  56. twilight:

    Ncaissie,
I logged into Psn before I left for work this morning to download some stuff. The Psn network was up.

  64. phranctoast:

March looks like one of those months where I’m not getting much out of PSN+.

  65. twilight:

    Roca,
The problem is that I struggle find a use for one of my systems. One of my systems is not even being used for gaming hardly anymore. One system mostly gets used for digital content and demos. I have a truckload of games on one system and only two games on the other system.

  69. Barnabe Jones:

Oh and I finally got my hands on the Vita.

Really impressed with the large bring screen, intuitive OS, and touch screen. The device had a really nice feel to it also. It was light weight, but still felt really solid and well built.

The analog sticks are really cool. I was expecting the nub from the PSP, but they felt like the really thing, only shrunk down.

Only played a few seconds of Uncharted, but it seemed really good.

  70. dans303:

Freerunning through the trees looks pretty slick.

    Really can’t wait now.

  71. twilight:

    Ncaissie,
I don’t have my Vita with me but I just checked with my friend at work who has the Vita. My friend couldn’t get logged in either. It’s not just you having this problem.

  72. ncaissie:

    Thanks twilight

  73. Barnabe Jones:

    Dans,

I’ll have to check it out when I get home.

    ncaissie & twlight,

Wasn’t the store due to be down for maintenance? I know it was going to be down for a little while, not sure when exactly.

  74. ncaissie:

They said 12 hours but it’s been more like 24. And that’s just when I noticed. I want to play HS golf online. I need more stars to unlock shit. Unlocking things in games really pisses me off. It shouldn’t be that way at all.

  75. twilight:

    Bj,
Yes, the network went down for scheduled maintenance. The Ps3 network is up but people can’t get signed into the network with the Vita yet.

  76. Roca.:

    Twilight

did you play ME2 on 360 or PS3?

  77. twilight:

    Ncaissie,
You’re welcome. Hopefully, it will be up soon.

  78. jojo29:

    BJ
*picks up BJs thrown chair…and throws it even farther ..*
I fucking hate Capcom…./grabs receipt from SF X Tekken Special Edition and hides it in pocket….

Sad thing is i know who the DLC is…

    Guy
    Elena
    cody
    sakura
    Blanka
    Dudley

    Christie
    Lei
    Alisa
    Lars
    jack-x
    bryan

At least the ps3 ver has 5 exclusive characters:
    Cole
    Fatass Megaman
    PacMan
    Toro
    Kuro

And fawk soo many games to pick up still: ME3, TM, Jak Collection, Ico Collection..

  79. twilight:

    Roca,
I’ve not tied into either system with game saves. I’ve played both demos quite a bit over the weekend trying to make my mind up.

  80. jojo29:

And is it me but 1) BF 3 pilot skills are severely lacking…ive had to literally LET people take off in their jets to get some dogfighting action…2) the actual game is becoming tougher….been in some LOOOOOONG ass conquest rounds where its down to the last 5 ticks…

Also, growing fond of rush mode again….went 18-0 in the A-10 Thunderbolt ;)

  81. ncaissie:

“Ico Collection” that’s on my hit list also.

  82. dans303:

“Ico Collection – that’s on my hit list also.”

    Thirded.

  83. Roca.:

    @Twilight
You didn’t answer my question…I asked you if you played ME2 on PS3 or 360?

  84. dans303:

Did anybody watch the AC3 trailer?

  85. Roca.:

yeah. No castle and big monuments in AC3 means it will just be another RDR ;)

  86. dans303:

    For shame Roca, for shame.

  87. Barnabe Jones:

I watched it. I think it looks really good.

Was that bit where he was climbing through the trees actual game play footage? If so, that’s pretty impressive.

I’m officially excited. I haven’t played AC since 2. Without giving anything away… 2 ended with a huge WTF moment. Did anything else major get revealed in the last two games?

  88. twilight:

    Roca,
The answer is actually both systems. I have a little bit of Me2 played on both systems so previous saves don’t factor into the equation all that much for me.

  89. dans303:

    @bj

The end of Brotherhood ended with a lot of stuff about Subject 16 iirc. I can’t speak for Revelations though because I haven’t played it. Though from what I’ve read (accidentally) there is a major twist at the end of that one too.

  90. Roca.:

    @Twilight
Then why you’re worrying about ME3 when you should be focusing about finishing ME2 first..and in case you didn’t know the PS3 version of ME2 is the better version. it has all the DLC included on the dics.

There’s no point in playing ME3 without finishing ME2 first

  91. twilight:

    Roca,
Lol. I never do anything in order. The reason I was making a big deal about what system I got the game on is because of my previous post to you.
Anyways, I played Mass Effect 3 some already last night.

  92. Roca.:

“I never do anything in order”

    sounds like Godless…play GOW1 and GOW3, but not GOW2..

  93. Roca.:

btw don’t forget to grab the free Vita game today 8)

  94. ncaissie:

“.and in case you didn’t know the PS3 version of ME2 is the better version. it has all the DLC included on the dics.”
It is also running on the me3 engine.

  95. Godless:

    Roca
    “sounds like Godless…play GOW1 and GOW3, but not GOW2..”

Completed all of them, Just not in the right order

  96. CarlB:

Okay roca, you sold me, picked up a vita wi-fi tax free today at the px… they have a LOT in stock.

  97. CarlB:

    “sounds like Godless…play GOW1 and GOW3, but not GOW2..”

Technically we all played it out of order if we didn’t play Origins first ;)

  98. CarlB:

“btw don’t forget to grab the free Vita game today”

don’t forget to try and beat my times 8)

  99. Roca.:

Carl got a Vita… I guess all it takes is a free $10 racing game to complete change his mind.

I’m guessing he didn’t wait for the memory card price drop either… ;)

  100. Kushy:

“Unlocking things in games really pisses me off. It shouldn’t be that way at all.”

    @Ncaisse

Do I understand you correctly, you think you should never have to unlock things in games, everything should be there to do at the beginning? Where is the fun in that? If you are talking about paying to unlock things then I can understand that, but not from a gameplay perspective. That is a big part of the fun, working a unlocking neat features for your time and effort. If it’s all there from the start then that is boring!

  101. CarlB:

Motorstorm RC rocks… especially for a free game!

  102. ncaissie:

No you understood me. Some people are just not as good (like myself) and I don’t get to see a lot of shit because it’s locked. It shouldn’t be locked. The fun is playing the dam game. You want to unlock things that is what trophies are for.

  103. Kushy:

    ^

I see while humble of you to admit you are not great at games I will never agree with your logic on this subject. While entitled to your opinion I assure you the vast number of gamers do not share that opinion with you! You want something a little extra, work for it! If not then don’t whine about it, you are capable if you put the effort in! :)

  104. Roca.:

I’m good at games and I enjoy challenging games Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Twisted Metal, WaW, etc(mostly play all my games on hard).

but locked content BS piss me off. Why do I need to beat the game on hard in or unlock the “hardest” difficulty?

I like locked content that you can unlock during a single playthrough. I hate content that are unlocked after you beat the game (GOW3 skins comes to mind)

  105. ncaissie:

“You want something a little extra, work for it! ”
I did work for it. Then used my pay to pay for it.

  106. Kushy:

    ^
Lol, smart ass! You know what I mean!
