Black Friday: PS3 sales up by 15% sold over 525k and 160k PS Vita units
Sony sent out a press release today revealing the sales figures for the PS3 and PS Vita over the Black Friday week. According to the platform holder, PS3 sales exceeded 535k with the 250GB Uncharted and inFamous bundle for $199 being one of the top sellers.
PS3 Black Friday bundles sales increased by 15 percent year-over-year, while overall software, peripherals and hardware sales grew by 9 percent. Sony also revealed that PS3 sales in Latin America surged by 200 percent year-over-year.
On the PS Vita front, sales were strong with the unit priced at $199 during Black Friday shifting more than 160k units.
Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America stated:
We’re very pleased with the Black Friday sales results, especially the incredible reception for the PS3 and PS Vita bundles. The demand was very strong which quickly depleted our inventory across retailers nationwide. The PlayStation brand generated significant revenue and year-over-year growth at retail because of our focus on what gamers love most in combining amazing hardware with great games and digital entertainment.
Sales of the PlayStation Plus subscriptions also increased by 259 percent year-over-year during Black Friday week and customer satisfaction rates for PS Plus are above 95 percent after the introduction of the Instant Game Collection.
PlayStation will continue to offer incredible entertainment experiences for gamers during the holidays with the PlayStation®Vita PS Plus Instant Game Collection Bundle that includes a one year membership to PS Plus (launching next week), along with the PS Vita Assassin’s Creed® III: Liberation Bundle and PS Vita Call of Duty® Black Ops: Declassified Bundle. In addition, there are two PS3 bundles available this holiday including the PlayStation® 3 500GB Assassin’s Creed III Bundle, and the PlayStation® 3 Uncharted 3 Game of the Year Bundle. Gamers will have no shortage of new exclusive titles to play with the recent introductions of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, LittleBigPlanet Karting and Wonderbook™: Book of Spells.

“PlayStation®Vita PS Plus Instant Game Collection Bundle”
Mouthful.

I’m loving Mikes spin on the headlines for the sales figures.
360 sales 22% down. . .Nice and Negative
PS3 sales 15% UP. . .Nice and Positive.
By posting as two separate blogs, he can completely avoid the fact that the 360 still sold more than the PS3
Sweet. .It’s like Fox News, with a gaming twist
November 30th, 2012
I see no spin at all.
Ps3 sales are up this year from last year while the 360′s are down. Sounds like cold hard facts.
Did you want Mike to post a comparison?
November 30th, 2012
I see what Godless is saying though! Why can’t it be pointed out that even though Xbox is down 22% and Ps3 is up 15%, Microsoft still sold more? I see what he is saying and it is very biased! Guess he failed to mention that “cold hard fact”! Honestly the PS3 fanboy shit is really getting to be annoying! Bunch of idiots bash everything that is not Sony! Sure there is some negative pointed out about Sony, but the PS3 trolls never have anything positive to say about things that are not Sony! The Sony bias on this site is pathetic! This coming from a person (me) who likes the PS3 the most!
November 30th, 2012
@godless/kushy
It says the sales figures of both consoles in their respective article titles just the same as it says the percentage up or down from last year. I don’t see what the problem is here…

Mike. Possible article suggestion:
http://dualpixels.com/2012/11/29/rumor-behind-the-scenes-with-first-party-hardware-and-third-party-softwear-next-gen/
Sony is near the middle end part of their Project Orbis, their next generation PS4. It will not be called Playstation 4, teams have started to call the final name as Omni. Omni will reflect their new hardware and content delivery philosophy. Omni will be “very capable” of doing modern day graphics compared to a Direct X 11 level of technology like Unreal Engine 4 and Frostbite 2. Compared to Wii U, it is better, but not the biggest leap in the world according to developer friends of mine. The key is the Omniviewer, a thin, lite and slick head mounted autostereoptic display that can track the users head and presents a 360 image view with semi transparent AMOLED screens. This can turn any TV into a 3D TV, as well as add extra augmented reality information outside of the TV screen. One application from an entertainment perspective seeing movies in 2k, 4k or IMAX resolutions as their original size where you have to move your head to look at the full picture being displayed. Can also synch with the Vita. The new controllers weather it’s the Dual-Moves or the Classic DualShock will have pulse sensors in the grips for biofeedback gameplay. Plans are a Basic Unit with 160 gigs and just the system with controller at $350-$399 and one with the Omniviewer and a pack-in game for $450-$499. Aims are for a September 2013 launch.
- Omni is also part of their philosophy with the new OmniCloud, the new version of Gaikai. This service will not only cloud stream PS1, PS2 and select PS3 games to Playstation Certified devices but will also allow every digital and retail purchase to have access to a copy on the cloud. Basically, you buy one game, you can use it on any Playstation device. Direct hardware Backwards Compatibility will be available by a $70 – $99 dongle that is plugged into the Omni that contains a PS3 on a chip with Cell to run games.

Oh come on GoKu, I’m sure he wouldn’t have mentioned it if PS3 had managed to outsell 360 in the U.S. for the Black Friday week.
That said, if you aren’t familiar with Mike’s writing style by now… where have you been?
November 30th, 2012
“Compared to Wii U, it is better, but not the biggest leap in the world according to developer friends of mine.”
hmmm.

“Oh come on GoKu, I’m sure he wouldn’t have mentioned it if PS3 had managed to outsell 360 in the U.S. for the Black Friday week.”
In all fareness, that would be news as it would be probably be a first in NA.

Things to note:
-More than 75% if the people that bought a Wii U on BF also bought New Super Mario Bros Wii U.
-PS3 doesn’t have an exclusive on the chart until 19th place with Battle Royale, which sold pretty good considering the flop many thought it would turn out to be.
-MS sold about 480K Kinect units, as Kinect Adventures couldn’t have sold that much on it’s own
November 30th, 2012
looks like USA has finally caught up with the worldwide trend
November 30th, 2012
@Godless
“he can completely avoid the fact that the 360 still sold more than the PS3″
360 always outsells the PS3 in the US, doesn’t he have to mention that in every article?
worldwide is a different story tho, I’m sure you know
I don’t see why you’re whining about the article, Mike is not making anything up. Whether you like it or not, the fact is that PS3 sales were up and 360 sales were down.

@phranc
This is a quote from that link you posted.
“Microsoft is the most vague out of all of them. It’s slated to be the most powerful out of all the next gen consoles about 4 to 6 times more powerful than Wii U and 2 to 3 times more powerful than Playstation Omni”
First I doubt Sony will allow Microsofts system to be 2 to 3 times more powerful then their system! Could you imagine if it were though? The Pbots would be going nuts and morph into Xbots! Oh the irony! Or they would say graphics don’t matter anymore! Hahahaha
November 30th, 2012
like i wrote in 2009 when it hits the $200 sweet spot, PS3 is on track to be the best selling console of its generation. 70 + 30 = 100 million on that price is just a stone’s throw away
the PS2 sold a good 25 million well inside the 7th generation
borrowed time for the competition..thanks to sony
November 30th, 2012
Kushy rumors are just rumors Hahahaha

Yes gunstar I know they are just rumors! My first sentence was… “First I doubt Sony will allow Microsofts system to be 2 to 3 times more powerful then their system!”
I see they vauge possiblitly of this is making you scared though! Don’t worry you can put a PS sticker on your new Xbox 720! Lol

“GoKu” lol how about FA-Q!
November 30th, 2012
I said somewhere in a different thread that Sonys money troubles were a perfect opportunity for MS to use there extra financial muscle to push the boat out with the specs for the next gen.
I think if MS are smart they will do what ever it takes to make sure the Nextbox is the most powerful home console ever made, even if it costs them to start with.
May well be far too far down the line to change any specifications now, I just hope Sony & MS have done what they did last time and produced something that can take on the average PC gaming rig.(not talking basement dweller rig here) but something comparable to what they did last time.
November 30th, 2012
Steam will also be releasing a gaming console in 2013
November 30th, 2012
“the PS2 sold a good 25 million well inside the 7th generation”
In fact.. PS2 sold almost 40M after the PS3 launched…
“phrac unfortunately vgchartz is a crappy xbot site so nothing they have is worth spit”
True. Take it for what it is. It’s all estimates anyway, as we barely get usable numbers anymore from NPD.
“Yes gunstar I know they are just rumors! ”
I take it as a rumor too. I find it hard to believe that tech could cost that little anyway..
November 30th, 2012
^
I don’t know phranc, guess we will have to see about cost! Not a good idea IMHO to lauch another 5-6 hundred dollar console! Guess it’s all about the value! If said console is on par with high end PC’s then $600.00 is a good deal to me!
November 30th, 2012
I think they should strive to not release another $600 console. It was one of the factors that led to their fall from market share leader from the previous gen.
Conspiracy theorist on neogaf/amazon have already suggested that since Sony didn’t mention PSP and PS2, they combined those numbers. They also mention that Sony’s numbers include Canada while MS’s do not.
Can’t say I believe them. Sony omissions lead to crazy speculations.
November 30th, 2012
“They also mention that Sony’s numbers include Canada while MS’s do not.”
Ok so minus about 10 from Sony then!

Can someone find out the Black Friday results for a few years for PS3/360/Wii so we can compare to the resulting quarters sales so we can estimate what this quarter will be?
I would but I don’t have time at work now, and half the links I looked at are blocked…
November 30th, 2012
^
Tsk tsk! Time theft!
November 30th, 2012
Hahaha, why is it this is one of very few gaming sites that don’t get blocked at work?
November 30th, 2012
Godless I doubt Sony will let Microsoft get the upper hand with superior tech next gen. It’s half the reason Sony are outselling the 360 now because of its higher specs. Sony have always been on the ball when it comes to building machines, Microsoft not so much. They’re always better at the system software.
November 30th, 2012
Sony got beat Black Friday yet again by Microsoft in America. No surprise here. I guess the real surprise would have been if Sony actually ended up outselling Microsoft in America. Microsoft has been leading in America for quite awhile now.
November 30th, 2012
“Hahaha, why is it this is one of very few gaming sites that don’t get blocked at work?”
It’s tagged by us as a tech site and not a game site..
November 30th, 2012
“Can someone find out the Black Friday results for a few years for PS3/360/Wii so we can compare to the resulting quarters sales so we can estimate what this quarter will be?”
couldn’t find anything on the web…but I can do the math to figure out last year’s black friday sales:
360 sales 22% down:
2011 BF sales = ~961K
PS3 sales 15% up:
2011 BF sales = ~457K
November 30th, 2012
360 went on to sell 8.2M in that quarter (Oct-Dec) with PS3 selling 6.5M.
Black Friday sales for 2010 will be great if you can find them as the 360 sold 6.3M and PS3 sold 6.5M.
November 30th, 2012
I found Sony’s BF 2010 numbers.. 440K.
Anyone want to make a worldwide quarterly prediction?
7M? Over 7M?
November 30th, 2012
“Anyone want to make a worldwide quarterly prediction?”
8M = PS3
6.5M = 360
November 30th, 2012
I would get in trouble at work visiting any websites. It’s cool that you can get away with this.
November 30th, 2012
Damn my PSN+ expires on the 7th of Dec!
Can you believe it’s been 2 years and three or four months? I think I got 3 months for a promo and 1 for PSN being hacked? Of reversed.
Anyone know of any promos?
November 30th, 2012
Rarely see promos for plus unless you get a month with certain game purchase.
November 30th, 2012
Since Sony is offering Music Unlimited for $12 for the year, I decided to give it it a go.
Ncaissie,
I don’t know of any promos for Psn Plus. However, I haven’t had to pay for Psn Plus for for awhile now because of codes I received with a game and my last system purchase.
November 30th, 2012
@twilight . there’s a way to upload your whole collection to the cloud for Sony’s music unlimited so you can access it anywhere.
November 30th, 2012
That’s awesome Phranctoast. I’ll have to figure out out how to do this. Sony made me an offer I just couldn’t refuse. $12 for a year of Music Unlimited is a great deal. I didn’t realize this was on sale. This is just another excellent perk for being on Psn.

To buy a Wii U and not SMB would be stupid. The 25% probably just didn’t have enough and are planing to get it next pay.

That’s a insane attach rate. Considering there’s so few games to buy for it, that makes sense.

@kushy
You are sounding more and more like a xbitch every day.
December 1st, 2012
Did your PS3 die or something?
December 1st, 2012
The Fact is they have to keep the consoles power to whatever it cost to manufacture it in the $400-$600($600 was too high Sony) so you can dream all you want guys. Fact is the ps3 cost Sony more than they sold it for and the price was still high. That’s why the PS3 blows the 3shitty out of the water. The 360 cost an manufacture cost were close at $450 or whatever and on top of that the quality was a 100% failure rate. I think Both companies learned from there mistakes (not sure about ms and quality. I thinks they lost their customers faith.) and will be close in specs. Again MS could go cheap parts and bring out a bit higher specs.
December 1st, 2012
On topic: Black Friday sales have been extremely cheapened by the fact that the store (at least in Canada ) all have Black Friday weekend or week sales. The same thing happened to my Boxing Day sales. Which turn to boxing week and preboxing week.
December 1st, 2012
“Hahaha, why is it this is one of very few gaming sites that don’t get blocked at work?”

@Phranc
How about wanting actual news from your gaming site?
Sales are not news. Every one of us owns a PS3 or 360. Who the fuck really cares about sales? It doesn’t affect any of you, yet you’re all fighting over arbitrary ‘stats’.
Rubbish. You people just like fighting, therefor he provides the flame bait. Frank, everyone of his articles is flame bait these days. Goddamn. It’s not that hard to see. Dave was much more impartial. I like a good debate as much as anyone, but reading the comments section and seeing nothing but “this sold more than this *insert witty comment* so this is better” is fucking
boring.
Stick to talking about games, not shit that has no effect on any of us.
December 2nd, 2012
@capt
You may not see it but sales do affect decisions made by Sony, Nintendo and Microshit. Do you realy believe MS and Sony would have bothered with Kinect and Move if Nintendo wasn’t eating their market share with the motion controlled Wii?
Of course Sales have everything to do with us.
Do you think they would make COD every year if it only sold a few copies? I keep hoping they stop buying the games so they will stop milking it.

It isn’t news. Do you understand what flamebait is?
The titles he uses for the articles, have you actually read them without your Sony-Bias 1000 glasses on?
@NC
Console sales are not the same as game sales, so that was a bad example, even though I understand what you’re getting at. For the purposes of my point, console sales do not affect us, so they are unneeded on this site. I recommend he stop posting them.
But he needs hits, don’t he….
December 13th, 2012
“The titles he uses for the articles, have you actually read them without your Sony-Bias 1000 glasses on?”
You do realize that this info was released by MS, Nintendo, and Sony not intended to be “flamebait” but News…
His title in this article isn’t much different than the 360 article. In fact the 360 article claims they sales dropped but they still sold and crazy amount.
