The Last of Us delayed to June 2013 to polish

February 14, 2013

The Last of Us delayed to June 2013 to polishNaughty Dog has just revealed that The Last of Us will be delayed by a month so that the studio will have some more time to touch up the game before launch. This confirms reports of retailers quietly pushing the game’s launch date from May 7th to June 14th.

Neil Druckmann, Creative Director of The Last of US recently posted an explanation for the delay on the PlayStation Blog. According to Druckmann, Naughty Dog realized that the team needed a few more weeks to polish the game.

Here is his full statement:

The Last of Us is an ambitious project. In many ways it may be Naughty Dog’s most ambitious project to date – brand new universe and cast of characters, brand new tech, brand new genre, not to mention it’s easily the longest campaign Naughty Dog has ever made.

As we entered the final phase of development for The Last of Us, we came to realize just how massive Joel and Ellie’s journey is. But instead of cutting corners or compromising our vision, we came to the tough decision that the game deserved a few extra weeks to ensure every detail of The Last of Us was up to Naughty Dog’s internal high standards.

As a team we pride ourselves on setting a very high quality bar for every aspect of our games – gameplay, story, art, design, technology and more. We want to make sure The Last of Us raises that bar even further – for ourselves, and most importantly, for you, our fans.

The extra wait will be very short and your patience will be rewarded. Update your calendars. You won’t even have to change seasons. The Last of Us will be available June 14th, 2013. Until then, know that we will be working extremely hard to deliver an experience that matches your high expectations.

Delaying the game smack dab right into the middle of summer can have some negative impacts as most folks are on vacation or traveling during this time. However, on the plus side there really isn’t much being released during the summer time. Hopefully Sony will dedicate some marketing muscle with its newly partnered PR firm.

  2. phranctoast:

Some others than piqued my interest.

    -Crysis 3
    -Metal Gear Rising
    -Castlevania Lord of Shadow 2
    -Walking Dead: Survival Instict (FPS)
    -Lost Planet 3
    -Pupetteer
    -Resident Evil Revelations

  3. dans:

I’m thinking Tomb Raider could be as good as *whisper it* … Uncharted.

  4. dans:

Speaking of Uncharted, I was watching a TV show and Nolan North popped up in a bit part role! Strange haha

  5. oldschool1987:

“-Crysis 3 (2 was good, 3 looks poor on consoles)
-Metal Gear Rising (demo was bad and graphics have taken a hit since MGS4)
-Castlevania Lord of Shadow 2 (YES!!! The epilogue of the first was epic)
-Walking Dead: Survival Instict (FPS) (can’t tell if joking tbh pal)
    -Lost Planet 3 (didn’t like 2)
    -Pupetteer (never heard of it?)
-Resident Evil Revelations (have it on 3DS, it was good on the boat which wasnt much, hated it when it went off the boat. Should be released on Vita)

  6. oldschool1987:

“I’m thinking Tomb Raider could be as good as *whisper it* … Uncharted”

    Lol.

  7. dans:

    “Lol.”

    You disagree then?

    This game looks pretty cool:

  8. CaptBirdman:

Adam Sessler said the game needed polish, so this is only a good thing.

But realistically they should have been released this game. They’re taking too long, IMO.

  9. oldschool1987:

    I disagree, yes.

It looks good but so has every other Tomb Raider set to be released. Angel of Darkness looked great, wasnt. Tomb Raider Legend looked great, wasnt. Tomb Raider Underworld looked great, wasnt. Guardian of Light looked very interesting, wasnt.

Crystal Dynamic have a habit of making a Tomb Raider game look great but rarely deliver. But this time the reboot does actually look very good and I hope it is great. The first time they revealed the game I was impressed but recent clips have been less than impressive tbh, even some of the previews have said it lacks something. I really hope they prove me wrong, I’ve pre ordered the game because at the very very least it will be a good game but out doing Naughty Dog? Nah.

  10. CaptBirdman:

    Never say never.

Remember what Naughty Dog was know for before Uncharted.

A lot of magazine publishers thought Uncharted 1 would just be Indiana Jones with Tomb Raider (which it is, but they thought of it in a bad way), but it pleasantly surprised them.

    Never count a game out…

  11. oldschool1987:

I didn’t pal, I said it will probably be great but CD history with Tomb Raider hasn’t impressed, they did do a better job than Eidos though lol. I genuinely hope Tomb Raider is as great as it looks. I love platformers with brilliant puzzles. I heard the puzzles are physics based which I am always fond of (hello Half-Life 2, best puzzles ever… Except maybe Portal 2).

  12. Roca.:

I think it could be a good game…not a great game like Uncharted.

The voice acting in TR is horrible

  13. phranctoast:

It looks to be very different IMO. It seems to mix Tomb raider with far cry 3 a bit. Open world with rpg elements with tomb raider like exploration. I’m quite intrigued and I’m very big into the tomb raider games, and I loved what CD did with Underworld. That ranks right up there with Anniversary.

    @OS
    On MGR:
I enjoyed the demo and I’ve seen video of some of the other boss fights and they looked insane. There’s not enough action games so when one comes around, especially from Platinum my interest is piqued.
    On Castlevania:
Check out the new trailer on PSN. It came out this week. Shows some gameplay.
    On walking dead;
Zombie FPS starring Merle and Daryl, as a prequel to show. Interested. Bothered it’s an Activison game though.
    On Lost Planet 3:
Looks a lot like Dead space 3. More action with horror elements. A big change from the Monster Hunteresque Lost Planet 2.
    On Puppeteer:
Check out some videos on PSN. Has a LBP look to it with an interesting twist to the level layout.

  15. twilight:

I really liked the demo of Metal Gear and early videos that I have seen on this game. This game will definitely be a day one purchase for me. As far as Crysis 3 goes, I haven’t seen this game in action but I will probably get this game unless it gets bad reviews for some reason.
I got Halo 4 for free the other day so I want complain too much. I have never been really big into the Halo series but I will say that Halo’s 4 graphics are some of the best graphics I have seen especially for a Xbox360 game. However, the people in general that said blu ray doesn’t matter can buzz off. The advantages that blu ray has for extra space is nice.
    Phranctoast,
It is about time that Psn got the new game trailer for Castlevania. The trailer has been out forever and a day already on Xbox live. This is one of the games that I want. I purchased the collector’s edition of Lords Of Shadows when it originally came out. The collector’s edition is gorgeous. I would love it if they released a collector’s edition of this game again.

  16. phranctoast:

Yeah twilight. PSN has to get some of their media (Including movie trailers) out there a bit quicker than they have. There’s no reason to potentially lose a sale to the competitors console if that’s the avenue they see the trailer on first imprinting on them.

  17. dans:

    @OS

I’ve watched a few gameplay trailers now, and TR does seem very similar to Uncharted. The thing that makes Uncharted stand out from the rest of the pack for me is that it’s effortlessly funny and loveable, solely because of Nathan.

I can’t see much humour arising from the TR storyline, so in that respect I think it will fall short. However, the rest of the gameplay looks like it’s holding up to the challenge. The question is whether it can sustain that level throughout the whole game, and not just the sections we’ve seen walkthroughs of.

    OT:

I actually seen PSN+ being advertised on youtube earlier today. There’s a first for everything!

  18. phranctoast:

I’d like to add Fuse to the list too. Insomniac makes great games and I can forgive them for wanting to stretch their legs and go multi platform with EA. Sounds like a nice Co op romp.

Also. I saw a trailer for Defiance (the Game) on PSN the other day. Looks pretty crazy. It’s directly tied to the show coming out on SyFy in April.

    http://www.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DXnZir_OC_W0&ei=800eUZKdA4mA0AH32YCoAg&usg=AFQjCNEkfVpes_Ee2ZsCGpkNf6EEIpnABQ

Might be another one to look out for.

  19. phranctoast:

Just check out the co op trailer.

I can’t copy and paste link from websense (our blocker) as it breaks them, and this link is broken.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=defiance+game+youtube&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

  20. twilight:

It just comes down to what you said on earlier posts Phranctoast. Sony really needs to do a better job advertising.

  21. oldschool1987:

@Phranc: I played the MGR demo and didn’t like it pal, it wasnt Metal Gear to me, seemed to silly. I’ll wait for the reviews on that one.

That Walking Dead game seems a bit rushed, the graphics are terrible and they’ve been trying not to show much gameplay even though its around the corner. I hope it will be good but I’m very skeptical.

  22. phranctoast:

    @OS.

Think of it more like Ninja Gaiden.

  23. Roca.:

I don’t have high hopes for MGR.

  24. oldschool1987:

Phranc it looks like Bayonetta which is a good thing, Bayonetta was a good game but because it carries the Metal Gear name I’ve been out off. I think its a disservice to the franchise.

  25. CaptBirdman:

“not a great game like Uncharted.”

    Uncharted 1?

That’d be the first time I’ve heard the word ‘great’ and Uncharted (1) in the same sentence…

  26. phranctoast:

Early magazine reviews have been great so far.

  27. oldschool1987:

“That’d be the first time I’ve heard the word ‘great’ and Uncharted (1) in the same sentence…

2 perfect scores and 37 in the 90′s suggests its pretty great.

  28. oldschool1987:

Hey phranc, just seen the reviews of MGR and they’re surprisingly high. I think its safe to say my opinion is starting to do a 180, I might just get it now.

I think the OTT-ness of it all put me off, seemed a bit too silly, even for a Metal Gear game and that’s saying something. Also th demo underwhelmed but I’ve played many demos that didn’t do the game justice before, Heavy Rain is one.

  29. Roca.:

    @oldschool

There aren’t any reviews for MGR yet

    http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/metal-gear-rising-revengeance

Hopefully this game won’t be as bad as Platinum Games’ previous game (Anarchy Reigns)

    Other disappointments:
    Aliens Colonial Marines
    Dead Space 3 :(

  30. phranctoast:

“Phranc it looks like Bayonetta which is a good thing, Bayonetta was a good game but because it carries the Metal Gear name I’ve been out off. I think its a disservice to the franchise.”

I understand you’re point of view. We have to remember that it’s a spinoff and not a true Metal Gear game, but a game based
In its setting. No one should buy this game to get the next MG game but instead to enjoy what looks to be great Action game looking to be better than even Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden and that’s an accomplishment.

“There aren’t any reviews for MGR yet”

There’s three magazine reviews. Metacritic hasn’t been updated with them yet.

    “Other disappointments:
    Dead Space 3″

Play the game, then give us an honest opinion. The game really is pretty good, and the reviews aren’t really being too fair to it because they wanted to match their prejudgements.

  31. oldschool1987:

“There aren’t any reviews for MGR yet”

    Yes there is lol.

    http://m.latinospost.com/articles/11974/20130212/metal-gear-rising-revengeance-review-first-gamestm.htm

Famitsu 39/40 as well. Few others as well if you look giving it high scores.

    “Other disappointments:
    Dead Space 3?

Haven’t seen you play it Roca, another account? I love it, the co op is amazing and the atmosphere is intact. Don’t hate a game for no reason. It’s got 88 on metacritic, that’s a great score.

  32. phranctoast:

    @Roca
When you’re done with the White Witch, we should go through CO-OP together. We’re in the same time zone so it makes sense. I finishing up BLOPS 2 before fully commiting to it.

  33. Roca.:

    @oldschool
    “It’s got 88 on metacritic, that’s a great score”

Its got 77 on metacritic, much lower score than the first two DS games

    Metacritic scores (critics/user reviews)

    Dead Space 1 (88/90)
    Dead Space 2 (89/82)
    Dead Space 3 (77/60)

    @Pharnc
I’ll hit you up if I ever get the game.

  34. oldschool1987:

77? I knew it was twin digits lol. Honestly I think reviewers have been to harsh on this game because it has co-op which doesn’t ruin the game if you want to do solo, there’s no AI buddy wandering around with you. Also the micro transactions gave the game some negative press.

Roca, if you like Dead Space you’ll like this. If you don’t like any of them then don’t worry about it but I recommend getting it and ill co op it with you :)

  35. CaptBirdman:

So… what I’m hearing you guys say is an 88 constitutes ‘great’ game right?

    I’m juuuust asking.

  36. oldschool1987:

Unless you find a quote of me saying a game in the high 80s equals crap. Not sure what you’re getting at here Bird because I’ve never claimed a game in the high 80s is anything less then great. 70′s is very good, 90s is amazing and 100 is a masterpiece.

  37. phranctoast:

I’ve been known the enjoy some games in the 60-70′s range… Gasp! ;)
