There’s always rumblings of a movie studio working on a film adaptation of a video game that usually end up going nowhere such as the Bioshock film. However, the latest video game to movie adaptation reveal announced earlier today looks promising and might just see the light of day.
Sony and Insomniac officially announced that there will be a Ratchet & Clank movie coming to theaters. According to the official PlayStation Blog, Blockade Entertainment and Rainmaker Entertainment are currently knee deep in production of the animated film for the big screen. Rainmaker recently released Escape from Planet Earth in February in theaters.
The deal appears to be inked in blood as Sony revealed that the film will release in 2015. Insomniac apparently will be hands-on with the film supporting Rainmaker Entertainment. Insomniac will be offering up game assets to help support the CG animation development in addition to contributing to the storyline.
As a fan of the series this is exciting news as I can see many possibilities if the film is successful. We could even end up with a Saturday morning cartoon series and cool merchandise. Ratchet & Clank does truly cater to all ages as children will gobble it up for obvious reasons and adults will enjoy it for the subtle jokes.
The movie won’t be a continuation of the story from the game but is said to be a retelling of the Ratchet & Clank series with Chairman Drek, one of the first major villains in the series.
In honor of the film’s announcement, all Ratchet & Clank games will be on sale on PSN the week of April 30th. Insomniac also teased more news of Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault and Deadlocked HD remaster will be revealed soon.
According to Variety, Blockade Entertainment is also producing another film adapted from Heavenly Sword a PS3 launch game, but will be a direct-to-video release.
