Sony has always tried to distance its handheld, the PSP, from the Nintendo DS. Both Sony and PSP aficionados like myself have always said that the PSP and the Nintendo DS are not similar; the Nintendo DS plays video games, while the PSP acts as more of a portable multimedia center, with music and movie playback, web browsing, and if Sony’s official CES website is to be believed, Skype.

Thanks in large part to Nintendo’s Wii and DS, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and PSP, and Microsoft’s Xbox 360, the video games industry as a whole made over $40 billion dollars.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 continues to struggle in Japan, actually seeing a sales decrease during the hectic holiday week from the week prior, and once again being obliterated by both the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii.

Reevoo, a group that collects ‘genuine reviews’ from actual purchasers of a product, has awarded the 2007 Customers’ Choice Award to the Nintendo Wii, despite the widespread shortages of the console leading up to Christmas.

Nintendo has had a firm hold of the Japanese gaming market almost non-stop since the launch of the Wii in November, 2006. The only true competition to the Wii’s dominance at the top of Japanese sales has come from another Nintendo product, the DS. But now Nintendo’s 1-2 combo has been broken by Sony, as its PSP handheld has outsold the Wii.

The owner of game retail chain “Slackers†has been accused of ordering Nintendo Wii consoles for his stores, only to sell them on eBay for upwards of $400.
